Morning Meanderings… Books and Guns

1j

Good morning!  Wow, I have been up since 6:30, filled the stove, completed some laundry, cleaned the kitchen and have listened to some audio.  Later I have some more house cleaning to do, a few errands to run and then later afternoon I am looking forward to a little quiet reading time.

Tomorrow… is another story.  I am signed up for the Permit To Carry Class.  This is a gun training class that has been on my bucket list for a few years now.  As much as I do not want to spend 8 hours in a class on a Saturday (my FAVORITE day of the week!), this is something I want to complete…. so there it is.

A friend of mine is coming over later today to let me use her gun for practice today and for the class tomorrow.  All of this cracks me up a bit because it even seems funny to me that I am doing this, but the bottom line is I want to know how to handle a gun, and the best way to do that is to go through the proper training.

Anyhoo…. that’s whats happening here.  😀   I have a post or two I want to write and am going to work on that now before I get busy on this house.

Hope your weekend is going to be AWESOME.  What are your plans?

Morning Meanderings…. Hair today… gone tomorrow

1j

Good morning!  Thursday already…. honestly I don’t know where the week went.  I have had something going on every night this week and it seems like I have run from the house in the morning, to home in the late afternoon, to errands, to evening commitments, to home in the later evening….

only to do it all again the next day.

Tonight though is a free space and I am looking forward to it!  I am once again in need of an unwind day and this should be it. 😀

On Monday I went in for a little trim on my hair.  It was a little longer than shoulder length and I told my stylist who has cut my hair forever (seriously…. I think it has been like 14 years!) that I was feeling radical and I needed a change.  I gave her free rein to do as she will…

and she did:

50

Mmmmm hmmmmm.  When she took that first cut of more than the “radical” one inch I was thinking, I thought… “Ok, let’s do this.”  So yes, currently my hair is a bit shorter than I wanted but my hair grows fast and in about 5 weeks I should be happy. 😀

I don’t hate it.  It’s just really REALLY short.

Really short.

Really.

Around here in books I am making progress on Forgotten Road.  In audio One Second After has made me cry twice and really think about how much we (yes, you too!) rely on electricity to do life.  In my car I am listening to Mad River by John Sanford and holy smokes Kathy, you were right.. good… but wow.

So that’s my update.  What are you reading/listening to today?

Morning Meanderings… Gone For The Weekend

1j

Good morning and happy weekend!  *doing a little dance with Coffee Cup*!  I am doing a quick check in here as I am leaving for the cabin in about ummmm….. 20 minutes here for the weekend.  My friend Laura and I will be working on some craft projects before Christmas and hopefully a little reading too.  😀

Have an awesome weekend, I am putting up the WHERE Are You Reading Challenge today, I hope you consider signing up – it really is a lot of fun.

Morning Meanderings… Audio In Da House Baby!

Good morning!  I am a little wired. (COFFEE!!!!) and a little tired… which in reality is probably stimulating the wired.  Yesterday… two audio books came int o my home and I am so THRILLED!  Mainly because my house was empty of all audio cds that I had not yet listened to.  Sure, the IPOD is still full of good audio – but my kitchen cd player and my car… empty.

Trust me… that is so weird.

Yesterday arrived two audio books I had ordered from Amazons Black Friday sale, one of them was Linger by Maggie Stiefvater.  I had read the books a few years ago and thought the audio might be fun.  When I put it in the cd player yesterday I wondered if it was really wanted I wanted to listen to right now, a YA about wolves…. and then I heard the words that sold me.

The book is set in Minnesota.  I seriously smiled when I remembered that.

“Why is that a big deal Sheila?  Why?  Why?”  (Told you I was wired!)

Well, it is a big deal because I have been working the last couple weeks on updating my WHERE Are You Reading Challenge and I was saddened to see that I had not read anything in my home state of Minnesota this year.

Now – I have fixed that.  Let the wolves rule the woods of Minnesota!  😛

So I can not present to you my updated and current WHERE Are You Reading Challenge.  I will be posting the new 2013 sign up hopefully yet this week as I LOVE this challenge!  You can see here the books I have read and where, and you can see my map here (which is super cool!)

I have to get moving this morning but hope your day is FAB!  If you have been working on the WHERE Are You Reading Challenge with me this past year, I would love to hear how you have done!  (If you have or havent, I would love for you to consider signing up for 2013)  😛

Morning Meanderings… What Happened To My Blog

Wait!  Don’t go!  It’s me, Sheila!  There just have been a few ummmmm… changes around here this weekend.  Truly it was unintentional.

Here is what happened.

My old template had only certain colors you could use with it.  While I loved the layout, I didn’t LOVE the colors.  On Sunday evening I decided to pay for the upgrade that would allow me to make the colors what I wanted, plus keep Book Journey ad free for a year (always a plus!).  BUT (and I really don’t like that word), once I put in the upgrade not only did some of my color changes not happen when I put them in the template, my blog was tweaked, no longer centered in the page and honestly – flat-out annoying.  I thought maybe it needed time to change (I don’t know why, I am from Brainerd, I think things take time) so I logged out and thought maybe in the morning all would be lovely.  Like magic.

Nope.

SO I changed out the whole template, went with a different color theme then I have ever used before and well, here we are.  I actually – really like it.  I like the sidebar links and I love the quote marks.  I love the little Facebook and Twitter links tucked into the header.  AND speaking on the header, I love that too.. crisper, cleaner, dare I say more sophisticated?  😯

And here we are… a new day, a new look, but I tossed my face (that sounds funny!) up there in the right side bar so hopefully you know it is still me, just a fresh paint job.

Sunday Check List

Good morning and Happy Sunday!  How is everyone doing with their turkey comas?  We are good and pretty clean here…. I sent the pumpkin bars (dangerous!) and a lot of turkey home with College son when he left yesterday.  I made turkey soup for dinner last night, Al ate the last of the stuffing…

This morning I am helping out with a volunteer fair and should be back home around 12:30.  I am hoping to get all my 2012 challenges updated so I can start promoting for 2013.  Oddly…. I find that exciting!  😀  I love new beginnings.

Today…

I am still reading The Forgotten Road by Randall Arthur

I am listening to One Second After by William R Forstchen and this is weird – I am listening to nothing in my car or on my kitchen cd player as I am out of audio.  😯  I know…. I need to get to the library or something….

I am planning to work on the Challenges this afternoon and a work out.

I am hoping to catch up on my posts that need to be written this week.

I am working on something fun for the Team Kickin It blog with Amanda from Reading and Running.

I am looking forward to a gun permit class I signed up for that will be next weekend.

Here are the books that graced my doorstep this week:

I am excited to do some reading in my near future too!

What are your plans for this Sunday?

Morning Meanderings… Dogs Life

Good morning!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We did here!  Did a little eating, did a little shopping, watched movies and just spent time together.

For my Saturday Snapshot today I thought I would give you a little update on the adopted dogs.  Sammy, was a stray and came to live with us in April:

In July, we rescued Mater who was abused:

Sammy is Lap-so, and Mater is art beagle and part basset hound, “A Baggle”.  😀  As you can imagine my house went from a quiet home with just Al and I and Bailey (our 14 year old Schi-tzu) to a BUSY house with Sammy who they believe was 1 1/2 when we got him, and Mater who was 4 months old when we got him.

Mater made the biggest changes to out home.  He grew fast.  He is extremely curious.  In the last 4 months he has taken food off the kitchen table, went through a “running through the house with a roll of toilet paper” phase, 3 pairs of shoes, perhaps most painfully – 10 books, and a lot od saying “MATER!” when he plays non stop.

Sammy and Mater are buddies,  although Mater is a year younger than Sammy, he is three times as big as Sammy now.

If you want to check out other Saturday Snapshots, check out Alyce’s site At Home With Books where she hosts this fun meme.

I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday.  Justin, College Son, goes back home this morning.  I have a volunteer fair to help out with for a few hours this afternoon and a few hours tomorrow.  Other than that, I get to hang out at home the rest of this weekend… get a little exercise and catch up on my challenges from 2012 so I can post about what the plans are for 2013.  😀

What’s the rest of your weekend plans?

Morning Meanderings…. Turkey Coma and Kick Off To New Things!

Good morning!  😀

Who’s up?  Who’s shopping?  Who’s sleeping?  Who can’t move off the couch or recliner?  😀

My son and I did the Thursday evening shopping thing but with a bunch of snow that was dumped on us yesterday it was cold and windy and wet and we decided we were not going to wait in lines and freeze for a good deal.  We didn’t really care if we got the items that were on out list or not as there was no “MUST HAVE!” item this year on our lists.

A friend of mine got to Wal-Mart at 5 pm and waited for the sales.  We walked in at 5 to 8 (when the sale started) and got the same sales that she did 😀

We then went to Target and walked in after the doors had opened at 9 pm and walked right to the TV I was looking at for our cabin and the Blueray DVD player I have been considering as well.  Justin got a dvd player and we both picked up an assortment on movies.  BOOM!  😀  We were done with both stores and home by 10 pm.  😀

We did not see any big draws to pull us back out this morning so I am enjoying a nice quiet morning with my Jasmine tea.  Justin is sleeping, Al left at 4 am to move equipment to the next job.  Later today Justin and I will go see Breaking Dawn II (yes I have already seen it… do not judge!  😛 )  This will be a beautifully quiet day and I am so glad for it. 😀

As far as new things I mentioned a week or so ago the shakes that my son has been doing and has me on now too.  So far I have been inconsistent with them as life has again been busy and I have had many food related events as of late.  This week though looks to be a better one to get started on, I will be posting an update today on what I am doing and what I know so far. 😀

I hope you all enjoy your day.  I would love to hear if you went shopping and if you did how was it and did you get what you were looking for? 😀

Morning Meanderings… Thanksgiving Plans and beyond….

Good morning all and Happy Thanksgiving!  I had an unintentional drop off this week from the blogesphere which amounted to awesome company stopping by, a change in a Tuesday agenda, Wednesday shopping for today and well.. here we are.  I have posts to write and just have not done them.

Our Thanksgivings are pretty quiet around here and that is just the way I like them.  College son will be here around 10:30 and he will help me prep food.  Hubby is so not a cooker so he has to stay out of the kitchen. 😀  We will have a big dinner, I am planning turkey and mashed cauliflower and broccoli, cottage cheese, and corn bread stuffing, and carrots, and dinner rolls, shrimp and later pumpkin pie and or pumpkin bars.

We spend out afternoon and evening traditionally watching movies and playing board games and grazing on left overs.  We may go see Breaking Dawn 2 later today as Justin has not seen it yet, or we may wait and do that tomorrow.

Tonight – yes, we are going to go see the crazies that shop the sales , which I guess by going out there makes us crazy too but it is fun and you never know what goodies you may find. 😛

BEYOND…

This weekend I have posts for you… a late Bookies Book Review one on the Language of Flowers which is fab and fun, a couple of audio books, a great discussion coming up, a movie review, and who knows what else.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving everyone.  😀

Morning Meanderings…”Pinterest, It’s A Mid-Western Thing”

Good morning and happy FOGGY Tuesday.  Yeah – it is CRAZY foggy here this morning.  I tried taking a couple of pictures off the back deck this morning and they turned out well… interesting.

(Wow…. if I said “morning” one more time in that opening paragraph we would have had to turned it into a drinking game….)

Here is one of them:

You can see my deck railing along the bottom….

Creepy pic right?

Ok so what I wanted to share this morning is that while at the Rural Libraries and Literacy Leadership Institute this past weekend (wow… that is a mouthful!)  we were having lunch on Saturday and our speaker was Jon Gordon on Social Media and the role it plays.  One woman in the group who had been to MLA spoke up and said that she had heard that Pinterest was really a “Midwestern Thing”.

“Huh?”

So of course we were all Googling and sure enough, the Pinterest phenomenon seems to be more successful with us who live in the midwest.  You can see an article here that the Los Angeles Times wrote in April.  It says that Pinterest is the third most popular social network site falling behind Facebook and Twitter, but most interesting is that most of the traffic into Pinterest is coming from the Midwestern states.

Apparently these states are more crafty?  😛

For me, I have an on again off again relationship with Pinterest.  I go on and I am fascinated.  I am pinning recipes and craft projects and home improvement tips.  I will do this for about three days and then I will forget about it for weeks and then… maybe pop on, get excited all over again and pin some more.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I think I may have made a couple of recipes from the Pinterest files, but nothing more.  I hope when I have a craft weekend next week that I will take a couple of these ideas with me.

So that’s my morning meandering.  Any thoughts on Pinterest?  Are you a pinner and a doer?  Just a pinner?  Or really can’t take on one more time suck (which…. it really can be!  Bright shiny pictures – oh my!  😀 )
