Morning Meanderings… Birthday Weekend and Book Club Tonight!

MM1

Good morning! I think I have a Birthday weekend hangover and not from drinking. 🙂  I just had a really  busy weekend that was a lot of fun!

On Saturday my friend Amy and I went to the Gatsby Party in the cities.  It was a late night as we drove home the 2+ hours after the event but worth it.  I was inspired by what they accomplished.

On Sunday, hubby and I went to a movie, American Sniper.  SO good.  I will review it at some point this week.

Monday…. my actual birthday.  I had coffee in the morning with my friend Gail.  Then I went and treated myself to a manicure and pedicure.  My son Justin who lives in St. Paul came to the house around 3 pm and we went out and bought snacks for the night, went to a movie ( Project Almanac), picked up pizza afterwards, and came back home and watched Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire and Gone Girl.  (yes, again on both of them 😀 ).

Justin brought me this really cool wine glass:

The glass says,

Secretly we’re all a little more absurd than we make ourselves out to be.  ~JK Rowling

Love it!

Tonight is book club and I am so excited!  I missed last months as I was on vacation so it will be good to see everyone AND it is at my house.  We have a couple of books to hand out tonight for our Harper Collins Book Club Girls event:

I have them all set up on the table:

It’s like out own mini BEA.  😀

As for today, Justin is still here.  We will hang out this morning and early afternoon than he has plans with friends and I will put the finishing touches on book club.   We are reviewing The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain, an author who I discovered this past fall and LOVED this book as well as a few others I have now read by her.  I am excited to see what the Bookies think.

Now… what will I make for an appetizer?  😉

Morning Meanderings… Books and Gatsby!

20130915_144056

Good morning!  Happy Sunday!  It is a coffee day for sure!

Last night was the Ramsey County Library Fundraiser for the Library, The Gatsby Party.  Far be it from me to pass up an event where you get to dress up as well as drag along my partner in crime, Amy.

We had such a good time!

First off we stopped at where my son works as it was 5 miles from the party.  We had a drink and an horduerve there.

20130915_144102

Then we invaded their bathroom and changed for the party…

We had so much fun.

There will be more pictures coming from the event this week and I will probably post those next Saturday.  Anyway, music, food, photo booth, auction.. fun.  We drove back last night after the event which brought us home right about midnight.  Thankfully today is a nice relaxing day so I can catch upon some things here but for the most part today will be books and movies. 🙂

Speaking of books…

I Remember You by Cathleen Davit Bell (audio)

The Best Of Me (movie!)

Fun line up of reads.  Hope your Sunday is wonderfully low key 🙂

Morning Meanderings… A Snapshot of Australia and a Bit Of Crazy

MM1

Good morning.  It is Saturday.  Coffee Cup and I are on round two.  It looks as though it will be a nice day here in Central Minnesota, the sun is already shining…there really is no snow… so odd.

25a
This picture was taken from my back deck this morning. This is the way Central Minnesota has looked almost all winter. I personally love it. Now a snow fan.

For today’s Saturday Snapshot I thought I would pop out a few more pictures from Australia.  We did spend three days in Sydney before we boarded the cruise ship.  They were not snoozy days – we were up early and exploring.  Here are some random shots of that time:

26

I can not recall if I posted about this lady before.  I know I put her on Facebook and if I did already chat about her here, sorry about that but perhaps she is worth repeating.  (Honestly I am too lazy to look back through my posts this morning).  In Sydney on the pier we found this lovely lady all in white paint standing as still as a statue.  However, if you were say a middle grade child… she would slowly move her hand and wave you over.  If the child’s parent/guardian were to take a picture of the smiling child in front of her… she would bend over the child and show her fanged teeth.  Yup.  It was super cool and the smiling child would not suspect until he seen the picture.  Awesome.

pc1

Two things about Australia…. Tim Tam – the cookie several of you told me I had to try so I diligently purchased a bag and shared them with the group.  Mmmm… they are good.  The coffee.  EEP.  When I would order coffee in the morning at the hotel (at about $4.00 a cup!) they make it one cup at a time.  I would have been happy for a good old gas station coffee but instead it was this super strong foamy brew.  Don’t get me wrong… I drank it.  It is coffee after all. 😉

2

Hmmm…. flippy bad hair.  We were on a boat and it was beautiful out.  Behind me, of course is the famous Sydney Opera House.  From reading Bill Bryson’s book, In A Sunburned Country I learned this… Sir Eugene Goossens, the man who had started the idea of the Opera house never seen it completed.  In 1956 while passing through customs he was found to be carrying a large amount of pornographic materials.  Australia security pretty much said “not in our country”, and he was asked to leave… permanently.  That said, Goossen never did see the Opera House completed in all of its glory.

So.. the Sydney Harbor Bridge is the world’s largest bridge – but not the longest.  Once again, in Bill Bryson’s book I learned that it was meant to be the longest as well, however the bridge took longer to build than anticipated.  10 years later when the bridge was complete, it was discovered that just shortly before, the New River Gorge Bridge in Virginia had opened up and it was 10 inches longer.  “Doh!”

28

We purchased Ferry tickets one day in Australia and tooled around on the different Ferry’s going from here to there.  One of the Ferry’s went to an area where people came into the main town by Ferry.  It was a very ritzy area and this is one of the homes that we passed along the way.

27

Another view from the ferry.

I will leave it at that for today.. more to come… more sights to share. 🙂

This afternoon my friend Amy and I will leave for the cities, putt around, and wind up at the Great Gatsby Party this evening.  I am soooo excited!  This is part of my birthday weekend plans (my birthday is on Monday).

On another crazy note…. yesterday I was chatting about the Polar Plunge I participated in 4 years ago.  My mouth got the best of me on Facebook as I teased my cousin’s wife about her saying she would never do it again… by the end of that conversation she and I had both signed up to participate in the Plunge on February 28th in Anoka Minnesota.  😯

Ahhh well…. it is for a good cause.

Morning Meanderings… Getting My 20’s On… Gatsby Style

MM1

Good morning!  Thursday already!  I am not even sure how that happened…  I went through most of yesterday thinking it was Tuesday.  No idea where I lost a day.

I have been back and forth on an event in Roseville Minnesota coming up this Saturday.  It is a Gatsby event for their library sponsored by their friends group.  I sooooo want to do an event like this in Brainerd in 2016.  Months ago I said I would attend but then coming back from our long trip, I suddenly just wanted to stay home.  (I kind of still do).

1a1

Yet… as the event draws closer… I became inspired.  Yesterday morning I looked at what I had in my closet of dresses and found one or two that will work… then I went to our local party store and found a wig.. yes a wig… that will also work.

I think I want to go.

It sucks that it is 2 hours away… but with a little luck, next year it wont be.  🙂

1a1

So that’s what I am up too.

Remember my word for this year is “emerge”… and I need to emerge out of this house.  lol

Today I have a freelance project to start moving on, a mailing for the library, work out session, and the start of the flyer for the bike ride in July for Camp Benedict.  I do not lack for things to do. 😉

Morning Meanderings… Heigh Ho Heigh Ho It’s Off To Work I Go

MM3

Good morning!  Getting back in routine here.  Thank goodness!  I love getting up in the morning with a purpose and heading into my office.  I have a few writing projects going on and more coming.

Today I write, I have a lunch date, work out, and a project to work on this afternoon.  I have been trying to read in the evenings instead of TV which works out well.  It is a good agenda.

Morning Meanderings… A Day Of Library Friends

MM3

Good morning!  Wow.  *yawn* *stretch*

What a day.

Yesterday I went to my first Minnesota Library Association of Friends meeting in St Paul Minnesota.  That involved me being ready and out of the house by 7 am and at the meeting shiny and ready to go by 10 am.

The Association supports the friends groups of Minnesota.  By being a part of this board I am ale to have a voice in how we support our friends groups.  I really am excited to be a part of it.

Then….

2:10 pm and I am out the door and heading for home.  In the house by 4:30 pm, time to organize my notes, heat my sandwiches and out the door again for our Annual Friends Meeting.  I was very excited with the turn out.  We had a wonderful year.  Our Spring book sale was a record-breaking sale.  This year we plan on it being another awesome sale.  We are actually for the first time ever moving the sale off site into a building a friend of mine owns for more space.  I am super excited about the sale!

We will have our first children’s sale this year, our third Wine and Words… so much going on!  🙂

I feel energized and have much to do today to update our website, continue my author search for Wine and Words, and work on a few things for Camp Benedict too.

Yesterday I finished up two audio books (with the drive time), Girl On The Train and Afterworlds.

and as long as I am rambling here, three books that I am planning to read have release dates today.  Keep an eye out for:

Morning Meanderings…. A Few Books And Things To Accomplish

MM3

It is cold here this morning in Central Minnesota.  I am here with COFFEE Cup and blanket and thinking about my crazy day.

Tomorrow I have my first big meeting for the Minnesota Association Of Library Friends at 10 am in ST Paul.  I will need to leave here by 7 am to give myself a nice cushion on arriving in plenty of time to feel comfortable.  That goes until 2 pm and THEN we have our Annual Friends meeting here in town at 6:00 pm.  Neither of these meetings am I ready for.  😯

I have papers to print out for the St Paul Meeting and stuff I should probably look over that just came by email yesterday.  For our meeting I still need to make the agenda, a new 2015 Friends Roster and prep what I am going to bring to the potluck.  I have not felt that well the past couple of days so that is assisting in the procrastination.

Ok… lets talk about books for a moment:

1aa

Jack and Louisa ACT 1 by Andrew Bolger and Kate Wetherhead

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

My Sunshine Away by M O Walsh

Fun mix!

Tonight we have a Super Bowl party to go to and I am hopeful I am feeling well by then.  I really want to go and I need to bring something.  I have an idea of what I plan to bring, just need to get in gear and pick up the ingredients.

The good thing about the library association meeting is that with it being two + hours away I will finally have some real audio listening time.  Something I have not had for a month!

Morning Meanderings…. Oh The FOOD!

15

As you probably know (from all the gushing over here, on Facebook, etc…) my husband and I along with friends went on a 17 day trip to Australia and New Zealand earlier this month.  We spent three days in Sydney before we boarded our Cruise ship for the rest of our journey.

This post is for Weekend Cooking and for Saturday Snapshot and it is all about FOOD.  Food is really part of the experience and my rule for traveling is that we can never eat at a place that I could eat at around where I live.  I love new food experiences!

Disclaimer:  Not all food pictured is mine (thank goodness!) I took pictures of the food that my hubby as well as our friends were eating too.

4

While in Sydney, we stopped at a little pub for lunch.  I ordered a burger that was to come with “hot chips” and I was very curious about these chips.  Turns out, chips are french fries.  Now I am not a huge fan of thicker french fries, I like the crispy fresh thinner ones with that salty yum flavor.  These were DELICIOUS.  I became a big fan fast of the hot chips of Australia and New Zealand.

PicMonkey Collage

We were in Sydney 3 days and at one stop enjoyed a Japanese Cuisine meal.  The four of us girls were really excited about this, however the two guys, Ray and Al were not… thinking it was going to be like a china buffet.  The boys were converted quickly.  The food was incredible and Al (my hubby) said he would stop anytime that he sees Japanese noodles.

5

At our hotel was a very nice restaurant and the above picture if from their display window.  We never had a chance to eat there, we were too busy out exploring.

6

I wish I had taken better notes, but I did not.  While in Sydney we took an all day trip to go and see some of the sights.  We stopped at a quaint little town where we had a change to grab a bite to eat.  We walked into this corner cafe that displayed the above window.  I chose a delicious sandwich pictured below:

7

On to the cruise….

13

If you have ever taken a cruise, you know there is a lot of food.  There was a buffet area that was open all the time.  A pizza place, hamburger and hotdog spot, your main dining area, a steak house, Italian restaurant, and a Sushi restaurant.  The food, other than the steakhouse, Italian, and Sushi, were all included in your cruise cost so knock yourself out.  🙂  The above picture is my dinner on the first night we ate in our dining room.  This is a chicken Alfredo in a Parmesan shell.  I know right?  I dont even want to think about that calories in that mouth watering, buttery yummy concoction.

14

Al and I ate in the steak house twice.  Once with our whole group, and then once just the two of us, a gift from our Travel Agent.  The steak house menu gave you choices of appetizers, soups and salads, your main dish with choice of sides and of course dessert.  Everything came with dessert.  Below is one of the appetizers I had, a crab cake with shrimp on top.  This was also the night I had the creme brulee.  I was so full!

11

On one of last excursions we went to Christchurch in New Zealand.  We had heard that they had amazing fish and chips (there’s that chips word again!).  We stopped at three different fish and chips places and all three were closed or out of business.  By mid afternoon we were pretty hungry and finally found a nice looking pub style restaurant.  (I love these pubs you can find some of the best food there!)

30

I ordered a chicken sandwich which I was sold on because it came with avocado.  I also ordered for all of us, the nacho’s as us girls had been craving nachos but unable to find them anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.  Wendy ordered for us to all try the potato wedges.

PicMonkey Collage4

My sandwich was good, but the nacho’s and potato wedges were excellent.  Each had a tasty chili sauce that I would love to try to duplicate.  The portions were HUGE, but all 6 of us were able to get our fill of these delicious treats.

1I of course have to talk about the deserts on the cruise ship.  They were always beautiful and you just had to try them… no matter how full you already were.  Below are pictures of some of the deserts we experienced on the cruise.  Again – note, these are not all mine 🙂

PicMonkey Collage1

If I were to mention any favorite of the entire trip it would have to be the Japanese Noodles we had in Sydney, the chicken Alfredo in the Parmesan bowl,  and the nachos at the pub in Christchurch.

This is why I have been on my treadmill almost every day since we have returned.  Ha!  🙂

Do you have a favorite that you see here?

Morning Meanderings… Finishing Up January

MM3

Being home so little in January it feels weird to be talking about the end of the month already… yet here we are.  January was…

World traveling and spending a lot more time with my hubby than we usually have time for 17 luxurious days

Traveling through the books I have read and keeping up on the archives.

Lots of guest posts (YOU all rock!!!)

Very Little Snow – YAY!

using My Fitness Pal consistently since I came home

1aaaaaaaaaaaaa

So that is wrapping up January.  2015 so far…. I like it.

February will bring a Super Bowl Party, an annual meeting for the Friends Of The Brainerd Public Library, my first meeting with the Minnesota Association Of Library Friends, possibility of a literary party, a birthday, an article… and who knows what else.  🙂

Today… I need to finish a book.  Work out.  A retirement party at the library.  Things to start prepping for Camp Benedict and for the Annual Friends meeting on Monday.  It shouldn’t be too crazy of a day.

How was your January?

Morning Meanderings… Bells of My Home Town… Feels Like Stars Hollow

MM3

Good morning!  Happy Thursday!  I can not wait until my sleeping patterns return to normal!  Up until 1:30 am when I forced myself to bed (wasn’t tired)… then I toss until 2:00 am, sleep a bit wake up at 5:00 decide I need another hour and then wake up at 9:00 am.  GAH!  Too late to have breakfast when I have a lunch date at 11:30 am so hungry and holding…. LOL

Well… there is always coffee. 🙂

Last night I had a Library Board meeting.  We were going over Strategic Planning before our regular meeting so I arrived int he parking lot at 5:00 pm for our 5:15 meeting.  As I exited my car I heard the bells play their song on the hour like they always do.  This got me thinking…

As long as I have lived in Brainerd which is *cough cough* for the most part all my life, the bells have rung on the hour in town.  They play a little tune, it’s pretty, occasionally it is seasonal, and it is always on the hour.

However…

I don’t know why.  I don’t know how.  I don’t know if it starts at a certain hour and ends at a certain hour… I don’t know if it goes all night…. I had never really thought to ask.

We have one of the city council members on our board so I asked… and she told.

The bells are carillon bells and they are there because a woman with the last name McKay was a big part of Brainerd back in the day.  She had served as a nurse in the war and upon her death requested there to be bells that chime from the court-house on the hour in memory of those who died in the Bataan.  Her request was put is place and someone actually manages the music, programs the bells to toll out their song – different each hour.

Sadly, I know little more than that.  I Googled this last night thinking I would find information on the bells and I found very little.  There is an article from 2011 in our local paper but the archives will not open it and three calls to the Dispatch this morning to access the information could not help me.  I could not even find images of the bells on-line, although other parts of Minnesota, like the Mayo Clinic proudly display theirs.

Ok – enough of my bell obsession.  I like them because I think they are unique.  They remind me a bit of what I would expect out of a town like Stars Hollow (Gilmore Girls people… if you haven’t watched the show you must – all episodes are now available on Netflix).  The bells are sweet sounding and I clearly wanted to write about them today….

1aa
Time for more coffee.  Lunch date, projects to work on, and reading this evening.  I will try to be a bit more sane tomorrow.
