Good morning!  I like this picture because it really captures most mornings for me…. coffee coffee coffee, like fuel to a car. 😛

Those of you who have blogged for any amount of time have probably had offers made for people to guest post on your blog.  The truly funny ones are ones that have nothing to do with what you blog about, they could be offering to share with your readers about tires for your car, UGG Boots, vitamins and vacation destinations… all of which have been plugged to me…. and no they did not offer anything in return or I may have caved on the vacation one and Book Journey would have become “Traveling With Book Journey” or something like that…. and I would go to fascinating places like Hawaii and Aruba and telling you what I was reading while sipping some delicious fruity drink and sporting some amazing tan…

well,

a girl can dream.

I digress..

SO, a couple of days ago I receive the email says that they noticed I talk about zombies from time to time.  😯

I do?

 

This is a stretch but their may have been zombie like creatures in the Passage that I read a couple of years ago… Flyers or Virals I believe they were called…  hmmmm….. well anyway, it was the next line that caught my attention…

 

we thought your readers may like detailed information on how to prepare a barn or garage for the zombie apocalypse.

Well… what sort of person would I be if I did not pass this vital information on to you?  And seriously, what if this post…. saved a life?  😛

 

And honestly, we are still five days out from Halloween… plenty of time to grab a couple of buddies and put up a pole barn.  😉  AND as the article says, since money will soon be useless, why not opt for the concrete floor?  This will lead to avoiding zombies tunneling under your building.

The article goes from how to design your pole barn, to how to stock it, the weapons you need… a team.  One of my favorite parts of the article is choosing your team…

Choosing Your Survival Team

As with everything in life, it’s all about the people you know. The last thing you want to do it be holed up with a useless, hysterical mob.

Stay away from:

  • People in the entertainment industry* (actors, singers, models, etc.)

  • People in useless white collar trades like SEOs, marketing professionals, accountants, and salesmen

  • People who are overly bubbly or overly depressing (you’d wind up throwing them to the zombies eventually)

*The exception to this rule might be comedians…everyone needs a good laugh!

Your ideal team of Zombie Apocalypse survivors will include:

  • Someone with military and/or police experience, preferably an expert marksman

  • Someone with hunting/foraging experience

  • A nurse, doctor, or veterinarian (honestly, a vet might be your best bet if you also have livestock)

  • Someone with farming/gardening experience

  • A handyman who has mechanical experience

  • A genius who dabbles in everything from computers to mechanical engineering

  • A few “blue collar” folk not afraid to get their hands dirty, learn new things, and do some grunt work

 

 

Isn’t that awesome?  That’s my funny for the day.  I am still in the cities at the library/literacy Leadership Training.  Day one was good and in about an hour we will kick off day two.  I will be heading back home tonight after 5.   Hope your day is wonderful.  I am listening to I, Michael Bennett this morning on my IPOD,  love that series.  🙂

Morning Meanderings… Dropping Off The Face Of The Blog

Wow. 

I have to say that going into this week I had no idea that I was going to go MIA this week.   Life has a way of zapping all my time and energy lately.  I thought this week was going to be mellower, but if this gives you any inkling of how things are going, I am currently in a car going to the cities for a Library Assessment/two day meeting. 

No… I am not driving.  😛

I did actually write a fun post yesterday morning and my computer did that AWESOME thing again where I hit post it logged me out of wordpress and I had lost half of the post and no time to rewrite before work. 

So anyway I am alive, just still living a crazy life that should (really…) slow down after I get back from Florida that first week of November.  I will keep in touch now throughout the weekend – I am in a hotel in the cities tonight so should have some time to review and write a little.  😀

 

 

Good In Bed by Jennifer Weiner

Camie Shapiro enjoyed her as a reporter for the Philadelphia Examiner.  Her quick wit and sharp mind make her stories interesting and she had no problem writing about anyone or anything… 

But…

when the day came she opened up a national women’s magazine and seen an article titled “Good In Bed” written by her “on pause” boyfriend, Bruce, things changed.  Bruce’s article is about his ex-girlfriend…. and about their sex life.  And when Bruce refers to this woman as good in bed, but “plus size” and curvy and some reference to a line backer… Camie is shocked to realize he is writing about her.

Loving a larger woman is an act of courage in our world, Bruce has written.

As if Camie’s world wasn’t already a hot mess with her fathers disappearing act, her mother finding love in another woman’s arms, and her sister into God only knows what… now she can deal with the insecurities of being called out about her size in a very public way…

Jennifer was a speaker at BEA this past June.

Many years ago a few of the girls in my book club were reading this book.  I was appalled thinking the title referred to a book that was going to be all about sex and multiple relationships.  Note to self, Do not judge a book by it’s title…

Flash forward and now I have a few of Jennifer Weiner’s books read and I had found the title on audio so thought I would give it a try.  Turns out Good In Bed, is not so bad…
The Good In Bed title while definitely a good “caught my attention” title, is somewhat misleading… while that is what the article in the magazine  is about (not a spoiler, that’s on the synopsis on the book) , the book itself is very non-sexual, I think I could safely give it a PG13 rating.

While not as engaging as some of Jennifer’s books – the audio was still good.  I liked Camie throughout most of the book finding her to be a likeable protagonist for the majority of the book.  Her relationship with Bruce (or the one she imagines) is a little “Bridget Jones’ish” but don’t go jonesing just yet – as while you get a bit of that vibe… Camie is a whole other story.

To sum it up I found Good In Bed to be simply a good listen, nothing over the top and a bit predictable as I figured out what most likely was going to happen early on in the book and that is the way it all went down. 

Morning Meanderings… New Books In Da’ House!”

Good morning!  I am here this morning with coffee and listening to Rick Springfield’s book Late Late AT Night… read, by him.  It’s not bad.  After a nap on Sunday afternoon, an embarrassing nape yesterday afternoon and then another one a couple hours later… I think I am caught up form the hustle of last week.  Now I play catch up!

For starters this morning I really wanted to post about the books that have graced my mailbox and my door step the past two weeks. 

OOH right?  I think it is kind of funny that I got a book on beer and a book on wine i the same week. 😀   I can not wait to have some good reading time!!!

Today I work and then I should run some errands as tomorrow is busy and Thursday morning I leave for the Library Sessions… more on that later this week.

It’s been a crazy week and even now I am still tired.  I wont bore you with the details I will just say that my week and weekend were extremely busy and still tonight I am feeling like I have sand in my eyes.  Saying this, the unimpressive week I am about to post is this:

Yup.  That’s it.  In fact as log as we are confessing here… I have not read one page this week.  Nope.  Not one.  Even today I say with a book next to me all day to pick up and I just never felt like it.  I am hoping as we move into this next week that will change. 

With that being the case, I am not going to post any new books/audio foe this week.  I have commitments Monday and Wednesday evening and will be out of town Thursday and Friday for a Library seminar and will take a book with me there since this will involve one night in a hotel.

Not So Morning Meanderings… But I think a worthy post anyway….

*Sigh* I cant even say good morning because by the time this post went up… it was afternoon.  Yesterday morning I left for the cities at 6:30 am for a meeting, then a board meeting and returned home after 10 pm last night WIPED OUT.  Then this morning I got up and went to check in on the IHN guests and wound up talking with my friend Shelly for three hours who was one of the volunteers who stayed over night and held down the fort while I was gallivanting around Minnesota.  In fact this morning I tried to remember the last time I had a day of not “doing” and I had to go back almost three weeks. 

I have another crazy day today but after tomorrow noon, things should slow to a mere simmer and no longer life at a boil.   My picture that graces the top of this post is part of the running around I did yesterday.  While in Minneapolis I stopped in at the book store Magers and Quinn where Michelle from Red Headed Book Child works.  Unfortunately she was out running an errand so I missed her but did manage to purchase three books and this neato mug.  😛

 

I though for today’s Saturday Snapshot (stop over at Alyce’s and check out this fun meme!)  I would post a few pics from my last week between crafting at the cabin, stopping at an apple orchard to the road trip yesterday.

Cool building in Minneapolis

 

On a tandom funny note do you ever use that “check in” option on Facebook?  From your Smart Phones you can have facebook post where you are at and I love that!  Yesterday morning while in Minneapolis I was going to check Connie and I in and seen one of the near by places was “United Geeks Of Gaming”.  A quick Google check verified that it was a group that meets to play board games and video games…. LOL, I checked us in there. 😛

I have about an hour and a half here before I need to hit the ground running again.  I have some books to put away in the books room, laundry to finish, and dishes to put away.  Tonight when all is said and done I hope to actually crack open a book. 😀

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

10-year-old August Pullman is a sweet boy.  He has a loving family and a dog who adores him named Daisy.  But August’s world is a small one.  Born with severe facial deformities he is used to being gasped at when in public places.  Small children point at him and adults quickly scurry away acting as thought there was some emergency “to do: they had forgotten about.  Because of all of this, August has been home schooled.

Until now.

Now as August is about to enter 5th grade his parents think that maybe trying a regular school would be a good idea.  August is not so sure but agrees to give it a try under the safety net that if he wants to quit he can.  As anticipated, most of Augie’s classmates can not get past his face. Augie is called names and noted are left in his locker.  One boy Jack, seems to be a friend, and a girl named Summer (who likes that both of their names are seasons…) but one can never be too sure because peer pressure to agree with everyone else is a strong force in 5th grade.

In an age where bullying amongst kids is strong, can Augie survive the tests and the lessons of being the bigger person?

 


Why did I want to read this book?  WONDER has been on my “”I want to read!” list since last year.  In fact, it was on track to be my first read of 2012 and then at the last second I decided on another book and WONDER was set aside.  Now, October being National Bully Prevention month, I thought I would give it a try to I downloaded it from audible.com to listen to.

Wonder is just that.  A wonder. Narrated in the beginning by August, he tells of his childhood and the start of this school year.  You do not get a clear idea of what his deformities exactly are – August mainly focuses on the reaction of the people around when they see him.  It’s actually heart breaking to hear it from his perspective…

The next part of the book is narrated by August’s sister and then we get into the what August looks like and what that is like from an older sisters perspective.  As you can imagine, at times she is protective… but at other times she is tired of the focus always being on August and what August needs as well as some of the comments made in school.

As the book goes on, the narration changes to August’s new friends in school and what it was like to hang out with August.  The narration changes are actually smart and witty.  It is interesting to hear the “other sides” of what is happening.  

Wonder is a story of triumph over tragedy – it’s about kids acting as kids do, parents trying to hang on and make things right and learning to just be yourself and to heck with the rest.  Wonder is a book that will speak to kids as well as adults.

Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller

Donald Miller knew of God but didn’t really know what to do with God.  While going about college and life he discovered a Jesus different then the one that can be shoved down throats – instead he found Jesus as the one who walks beside him and teaches him about looking at people, life, and situations in new and positive ways. 

While taking off with his new-found faith in a loving God, Miller finds himself fried out on his ministry and falls away.  Yes Jesus continues to show up in the strangest of ways slowly pulling Miller back to Him and creating a passion that is bone deep.

Blue Like Jazz is an honest walk with Donald Miller through his younger years of funny college moments, a crazy hippy movement, relationships, friendships and more.  Attending Reed College in Portland Oregon, known as the least faith-based school around instead cranking out brilliance at an academic level unheard of by most colleges.  As Don struggles through, his thoughts are at times profound and even funny.  Don, like any one of us, is just trying to get it right. 

 

 

 

Why did I want to read this book?  I have read Donald Miller before and enjoyed his laid back style.  I had heard good things about this book and now there is also a movie out that I have also heard is very good. 

Blue Like Jazz is now a movie as well

 

Blue Like Jazz is a book I listened to on audio.  Read by its author, Donald Miller I loved the steady – not preachy or “lecturey” (my word) but instead in a tone of “hey, here’s what happened and here’s what I did with it…”  I actually enjoyed the narrating very much.

Blue Like Jazz was a good audio.  Don’s stories of his college, and the people he hung out with and what they did were truly college actions except Don always was looking for the connections between this life and how it plays into Gods plan for us.  Even when he seems to not be walking in a way that God would find worthy, he still was and that really is the beauty of this book.

Never preachy, Blue Like Jazz reads like any other no fiction novel with the bonus of  this book can make you think.  There are some wonderful moments in Blue Like Jazz, I especially liked his little group of Christians in the school (a rarity) and their plan to come out with a reverse confession booth – I loved this whole section of the book – shoot, I loved the whole book.  There were times I listened to whole chapters again as I loved how Don Miller talks of loving people no matter what and losing this judgey attitude. 

I can’t wait to see the movie and have it rented now from Netflix waiting for me 😉

 

Fun fact:  The book has been made into a movie by director Steve Taylor.   On his blog on September 16, 2010, Donald Miller stated that despite a strong screenplay, a stellar cast, and rave reviews, the project was put on hold indefinitely due to lack of funding. Two fans created a site called “Save Blue Like Jazz”where they urged fans to help raise money to fund the movie through a website called Kickstarter. This campaign raised over $340,000, more than doubling the original goal of $125,000 by October 25, 2010.

Morning Meanderings… Hobbit Book Club

Good morning!  Wednesday!  already!  WOW!

I usually feel these days like I am behind – behind on reviews, reading, and occasionally life as well.  Today would be a fine example of that.  As I was looking through some old emails that I had yet to open (*sigh*) I found an interesting link to an online Hobbit Book Club.  As you more than likely know, The Hobbit is coming out as a movie.  What you may not know is that I LOVE all things Tolkien.  SOOOOOO…. I have to look into this deeper.

If you click on the link, you will see I am already behind.  If you know me, you know I am going to try to catch up anyway… 😀  My posting of this today is to make sure you 1.  know about the read-a-long and 2.  see if anyone else is doing this already, or would care to chase after it like me… with me.

Morning Meanderings… When A Passion Catches FIRE

Good morning!  Happy Tuesday!  It is drizzly here in Minnesota this morning.  I am up early serving for IHN and now sitting down to write a quick post before I go to work. 

Yesterday I spoke in a nearby town to a group of 40 retired teachers about Banned Books.  I know right?  SO how did that happen?

A woman who is on the Friends Of The Library board “witnessed” my passion for banned books a few weeks ago and asked me if I would speak to this group.  I said yes and it sounded like a really good idea at the time…

until when I was driving their yesterday and thought, I wonder if some of these teachers will be teachers I had as a student?  AND…. I wondered if they would think that grown up Sheila is kind of a “rebel with a cause”talking about banned books....

 

When I arrived I was thrilled to see 4 of the teachers were teachers I once had.  And they remembered me which always amazes me because throughout my life time I probably had about 40 teachers and they have about 1,000 students throughout their career….  

AND talking about banned books was actually fun.  I brought some of my own, had pictures of the ones I did not own and went from the current champions of banned: Hunger Games, Harry Potter, SPEAK, to the surprises:  LORAX, The Dictionary, Lord Of The Rings, and of course the classics…  It was actually a lot of fun and there were questions afterwards – a great question was,

“Do you think an author may sometimes try to be a bit controversial to hit the banned books list, after all… ban a book the kids want to read it more…”

 

While I can not speak for the authors, I figured in most cases no…. but who knows really…. 😛

 

When I was done speaking I was given a gift, a banned book bracelet (SSSQQQUUUEEE!) I have always wanted one!  It really was a good time.

In other news, I noticed that The Twelve by Justin Cronin is now available for purchase.  Serious SSSQQQUUUEEEE worthy.  If you have not read The Passage (click for my review)– oh my… you MUST.  And when you are done, be sure and give The Twelve a try.  I have yet to read my copy of The Twelve and that is really insane since The Twelve was the one book I wanted most when I went to BEA in June and I have now had it on my shelf all these months.
