One Second After by Willian Forstchen

41

What does a typical start to your day look like?  Maybe you wake up to an alarm clock, or at least look at a clock when you wake up.  You might make coffee, cook breakfast, check your email, shower, blow dry and style your hair, turn on the radio, or your IPOD while you start your day and eventually get in your car and go – to work, to run errands, make a call on your cell phone., stop and get a coffee at your favorite coffee shop…

Now.  What if everything that required electricity no longer worked?  What if something called an Electric Magnetic Pulse (EMP), something like a nuclear bomb that hits the earth’s atmosphere and wipes out the magnetic field that covers the earth and all things that require electricity (or have electrical parts like our vehicles) come to a stop.

For months.  Maybe years.

We can no longer run water through an electric pump.  Keep our food cold in refrigerators.  Make a pot of coffee, cook our food on a stove, watch tv or use our computers to get a report of what is going on…the elderly in Nursing homes no longer have working monitors, electric wheel chairs do not work, pace makers… Fire trucks, Police cars, don’t move.  You can’t call a friend to see what happened, you can’t watch tv or listen to a radio.

There would be a panic and a rush on grocery stores – but it is cash only as credit cards can not be run.  (Do you have a large amount of cash on you?) Pharmacy’s are over taken as the panic sets in no one bothers paying anymore, it is now looting and survival of the fittest.

as time goes on and food becomes scarce, the family pet suddenly may be needed to feed your family…

freaked out yet?

In One Second After, this is exactly what happens.  John Matherson lives a small quiet life in North Carolina, has two daughters and is a teacher at the local college.  His wife had passed away a few years earlier.  When everything shuts down, cars abandoned on the interstate, planes drop out of the sky, people leave their posts at their jobs; John knows something big has happened and he has to protect his family.  When the town leaders realize that an electric pulse has hit the United States, John makes a list of what they need to survive.  With one daughter who is a diabetic insulin is a must to find.

As the days turn into weeks, and the weeks into months, people turn on each other for survival.  Students are recruited to protect the town as waves of people try to get in, homes are guarded with loaded rifles and it becomes common to hear that someone was shot and killed as they tried to steal from a neighbor.

The mechanism for a 400 km high altitude burst EMP: gamma rays hit the atmosphere between 20–40 km altitude, ejecting electrons which are then deflected sideways by the Earth’s magnetic field. This makes the electrons radiate EMP over a massive area. Because of the curvature and downward tilt of Earth’s magnetic field over the USA, the maximum EMP occurs south of the detonation and the minimum occurs to the north. – Wikepedia

This book was brought to my attention by a friend over a year ago.  I found the topic frightening and fascinating and while listening to this book on audio I found it really was both frightening and fascinating.  Joe Barrett does a wonderful job narrating this one.

I think what is most frightening about this book is that this could actually happen.  As I look around my house and think how much I count on the lights to work, the electric pump to bring heat into my home this time of year, my cell phone to work, the faucet to provide water for my coffee, tea, cooking – and Lord knows I do love my lap top time…..

what if all that came to a screeching halt?  Scratch that… not even screeching… a silent stop.

Think about how much as a society we have come to rely on things to work by the slip of a switch, a push of a button or a flip of a handle.

While I admit, sometimes I think that the world was probably a better place before we had such access to one another, while I do love the conveniences of going to Facebook and seeing what happening with friends and family, we sure have become a society of being in each others business…. and sharing info, shoot… I am as big of a social network junky as many!  But what if we were sent back 50 – 100 years back to when you heated your homes with wood, everyone had gardens to provide food and raised animals for meat.  While yes, a lot of work for sure, when people were busy working together as a family – was that a better way?

I am just thinking here because that is something this book will make you do… think.

I thoroughly enjoyed the read and highly recommend this book.

Morning Meanderings…. Counting Up the Casualties….

1j

Good morning!  How is everyone doing with the Christmas planning, parties, preparations, etc…  I am a bit wiped out.  I have a Christmas brunch tomorrow morning that needs a white elephant gift, and a Christmas party here on Sunday afternoon that needs a white elephant gift.  Our work one is on Wednesday….  *whew*

I thought his morning I would give you an update on Mater – the rescued Beagles/Bassett Hound (a Bagel 😛 ) we rescued in July and gave a home to.

I have mentioned before that while he is big… he is still a pup at now 9 months old and loves to chew.  Over the past 5 months I have lost shoes, shirts (he ate the beads off one), a credit card (my bad… I left it on the coffee table after ordering on-line), and yes the occasional book.  😯

Being a small dog person… this chewing destructive thing is all new to me.

20121202_145743

But as you can see above, he is a sweetheart (that’s a bone he has there – those he is welcome to chew. 😀 )

Just a couple of mornings ago he was up all night.  Running around the bedroom – up, down, up down… he would not sleep (its like having a baby in the house!)  When I got up in the morning I discovered he had eaten my favorite slip on sandals:

2

Mmmmm hmmmm…. these slips on were the shoes I wore around the house in the evenings, all summer long, they went with me everywhere for casual where – cabin, Florida, Georgia, Honduras…

*sigh*

and of course after running around all night like a wild one…. this is what happened in the morning:

1

Mmmmm…. hmmmmm.

Sure.  You all are sleeping now.  I think I need more coffee…. 😛

Today I have a big mailing to do, sort through the Pampered Chef and get it delivered, pick up items for the breakfast brunch tomorrow and dig into reading Round House, which is first on the list.

How is your Friday shaping up?

Forgotten Road by Randall Arthur

1

29-year-old Cole Micheal’s had the world at his fingertips… a wonderful career as a musician, a loving wife and a three-year old son that had stolen his heart the moment he was born.  Cole thanked God all the time for the incredible blessings in his life.

And then tragedy strikes and all that Cole held near slips through his fingers and there is nothing he can so but painfully watch it go.

How could a loving God allow something like this to happen?

Broken and angry, Cole starts down a path of self-destruction, doing anything to drown out the pain and find peace – and he tries to find it in the bottom of every bottle…

And tragedy strikes again.

Now in prison Cole is swallowed up by his anger.  Where is this loving God that his Pastor spoke of?  Where is the God who blesses those who live a good clean life?  Where is he now that Cole needs Him more than ever?

Or does he need Him?  Because who really needs this level of grief?

I have to share a little background story.  Many years ago I discovered this author Randall Arthur.  I read Wisdom Hunter, Jordon’s Crossing, and Brotherhood of Betrayal.   I loved that his books were faith-based, but not sugary sweet.  They had real meat to them.  Hard issues.  Real issues and real situations with three-dimensional characters.  I devoured his books and waited for more.  And waited and waited.  Finally after watching for more books for a couple of years, I forgot about him, although I continued to recommend his books.

A little over a month ago I received an email from…. yup, Randall Arthur.  He had a new book out, and seen that I had once talked about his books here.  He was wondering if I would consider reviewing Forgotten Road if he sent me a copy.

Seriously, I was floored, not wanting to seem to fan-girly I quickly emailed back a definite YES.

It’s hard when an author you have raved about comes out with a book after many years of drought.  You, as the reader have to wonder if the book will live up to the wondrous experiences you have had in the past, you wonder if your memory serves you right – or if over the years you have elevated the writing to a level of fictitious quality…

I need not worry here.

Forgotten Road was everything I had appreciated about Randall Arthur’s writing.  This book is not your run of the mill “tragedy, lost God, found God, all was roses for ever and ever…”.   Instead, you feel like you could be living in Cole Micheal’s town.  You can imagine that you knew this great song writer and fiddler and feel the pain when tragedy strikes his family, not once but twice in rapid succession.

AND you can imagine what you would feel like to hear that this once great man, respected by his community goes off the deep end, drinking and soaking in a deep dark pain.  All of this felt like I knew Cole Michael’s…

Written in a way that flashed back to earlier times as piece by piece you get the entire story, occasionally painful – I admit to crying twice while reading.

AND then, along side this story line is another story of a boy named Jesse who is abused at home and very VERY angry.  He finds out he is adopted and while that is a relief to know that the man who puts him down and beats him is not his real father, he can not help but hold in contempt the people who gave him up and left him to this hell like life.  As Jesse gets older his anger overcomes him and he becomes this beast of a person….

and you have to wonder as his chapters slip between Cole’s what one has to do with the other…

How do I describe such a book?  Powerful comes to mind.  Out of the cookie cutter Christian fiction box is another.  And of course I have to add, a must read.  Randall Arthur was worth the wait on this one.  Beautifully and well written, if you read Christian fiction or not I am going to tell you that you will not be disappointed with this incredibly real read that even as it came to a close, shocked me again, which to this reader, is a big compliment to the author.

Morning Meanderings… A Prequel and a Sequel….what are your thoughts about THIS

1j

Good morning.  How ya’ all doing?

This morning while flipping through emails and Facebook and I don’t know where I was when I seen it, but somewhere out there lost in the Internet world I discovered that Disney has decided that Alice is going back to Wonderland and is indeed going to film a sequel.

*Pause here for dramatic effect*

Tim Burton put Wonderland back on the map in 2010 with his Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska combo and if I may add, an awesome Red Queen by Helena Bonham Carter.

1a4a

BUT… while the film grossed in the 11th place of all time profitable movies, where would it go from where it left off?  At this time there is no word of who will be starring – will it be the same cast, or all new?  Or is Disney setting itself up for an epic fail?  While I personally enjoyed the movie, I didn’t LOVE LOVE it.

And then… lets not forget that The Great And Powerful OZ is coming out in 2013, this one I am excited about!  And while Oz and The Red Queen are two different characters and two different stories entirely, I have to wonder if Disney is hoping that the trip to Wonderland will be as powerful as the trip they are taking down the yellow brick road. …

Personally (my gosh I am chatty this morning!) I would like to see a prequel to Wonderland and by that I am thinking something along the lines of what author  Gregory Maquire did for Wicked.  Brilliant… really brilliant.

So what are your thoughts on the sequel/prequels?  Do you enjoy them or do you prefer things left as is in their original written form?

I had a great week and a busy weekend!  Here is what I posted this past week:

ZIP.

Yup.  I don’t know what happened – the week ran away with my laptop time.  😯  I got in a couple morning chats but that was it.

I thought I would have time, apparently I didn’t.  To show you that I have been doing something with my time, this is what I was doing this weekend:

That’s me this past Saturday, working on my gun safety training class and permit.  It was exhilarating, fun, scary, and I passed. 😀

The two above pictures are my project today – I am making coasters for my book club.  We have our Christmas Party on Tuesday and I am looking forward to hanging out with some of my favorite people. 😀

As far as what I am reading this week, I have to finish the book club book, The Christmas List.  Then I am starting:

1a2

One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to relive or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil, and thirteen-year-old son, Joe. In one day, Joe’s life is irrevocably transformed. He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared.

While his father, who is a tribal judge, endeavors to wrest justice from a situation that defies his efforts, Joe becomes frustrated with the official investigation and sets out with his trusted friends, Cappy, Zack, and Angus, to get some answers of his own. Their quest takes them first to the Round House, a sacred space and place of worship for the Ojibwe. And this is only the beginning.

I am really looking forward to this book!

A dominant force in the sport of ultrarunning, Scott Jurek is a seven-time winner of the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run and a two-time winner of the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon through Death Valley. Eat & Run offers an inspirational account of Jurek’s life as a runner and vegan. Regaling listeners with jaw-dropping tales of endurance, Jurek also delivers sound science and practical advice – as well as his favorite plant-based recipes.

I am enjoying this one.  I love books on fitness, endurance and making it happen.

With a meeting tomorrow, Book Club on Tuesday, Student helping on Wednesday a meeting at my house on Thursday – I think this is all I am putting on my to read.

Morning Meanderings… pics of the past

1j

Good morning!  What a surprise!  Another Saturday I am running out the door, this time to gun training class (dont ask… Bucket List thing 😛 ) but I wanted to put some pics up for Alyce’s Saturday Snapshot.

A couple days ago I was digging through some old papers and started looking at pictures.  This time of year from Thanksgiving to Christmas is always a little harder on me as I think a lot about my family, all of which who are gone from this earth at young ages.

I thought today I would post a couple of my dad with the King Salmon he caught in 1979:

Dad and my Uncle Dallas. All pics taken in Soldotna ALaska

and one more I found …

The last one is me – I think three years old?  Notice I am wearing one show….LOL

Ok, got to get ready but stop over to see Alyce at At Home With Books to see others Saturday Snapshots.

As a Book Lover, Are Books On Your Christmas/Wish List?

1a9

It’s that time of year, even though Minnesota is just starting to get t the snow part which as much as I hate snow, it does make it feel more like the season.  SO looking out the window at the lawn, it makes it a little hard to believe that in about two weeks it will be Christmas.

I think it is always funny when friends/family say “I know you love to read but you have so many books that I would never get you a book.”

What they are missing is I love getting books for any occasion.

A book from a friend to me means it is something they think I will enjoy.  I love the meaning behind that.  They are sharing an adventure within the pages and if they have already read it and want to share that adventure with me, even better.  How many gifts out there really come in a nice square (EASY to wrap!) package that is not only lovely to hold… but to go inside, and meet …

people!

places!

things!

That is so exciting to me!

To let me friends and family know the books I hope to experience, I keep an Amazon wish list.  I find it easy to use, quick to add new books to, and it makes an easy way for others to pick out something they know I would love.

My questions to you is that as fellow book lovers (HIGH FIVE!) Are books on your wish list?  Do you receive books from friends and family as gifts?  How do you communicate to them what you would enjoy reading?

Morning Meanderings… Books and Guns

1j

Good morning!  Wow, I have been up since 6:30, filled the stove, completed some laundry, cleaned the kitchen and have listened to some audio.  Later I have some more house cleaning to do, a few errands to run and then later afternoon I am looking forward to a little quiet reading time.

Tomorrow… is another story.  I am signed up for the Permit To Carry Class.  This is a gun training class that has been on my bucket list for a few years now.  As much as I do not want to spend 8 hours in a class on a Saturday (my FAVORITE day of the week!), this is something I want to complete…. so there it is.

A friend of mine is coming over later today to let me use her gun for practice today and for the class tomorrow.  All of this cracks me up a bit because it even seems funny to me that I am doing this, but the bottom line is I want to know how to handle a gun, and the best way to do that is to go through the proper training.

Anyhoo…. that’s whats happening here.  😀   I have a post or two I want to write and am going to work on that now before I get busy on this house.

Hope your weekend is going to be AWESOME.  What are your plans?

Morning Meanderings…. Hair today… gone tomorrow

1j

Good morning!  Thursday already…. honestly I don’t know where the week went.  I have had something going on every night this week and it seems like I have run from the house in the morning, to home in the late afternoon, to errands, to evening commitments, to home in the later evening….

only to do it all again the next day.

Tonight though is a free space and I am looking forward to it!  I am once again in need of an unwind day and this should be it. 😀

On Monday I went in for a little trim on my hair.  It was a little longer than shoulder length and I told my stylist who has cut my hair forever (seriously…. I think it has been like 14 years!) that I was feeling radical and I needed a change.  I gave her free rein to do as she will…

and she did:

50

Mmmmm hmmmmm.  When she took that first cut of more than the “radical” one inch I was thinking, I thought… “Ok, let’s do this.”  So yes, currently my hair is a bit shorter than I wanted but my hair grows fast and in about 5 weeks I should be happy. 😀

I don’t hate it.  It’s just really REALLY short.

Really short.

Really.

Around here in books I am making progress on Forgotten Road.  In audio One Second After has made me cry twice and really think about how much we (yes, you too!) rely on electricity to do life.  In my car I am listening to Mad River by John Sanford and holy smokes Kathy, you were right.. good… but wow.

So that’s my update.  What are you reading/listening to today?
