Morning Meanderings… Brief Update

Good morning!  😀

I thought I would be around more this week even with the crazy schedule but that turned out to be not so true…. yesterdays work – Pampered Chef Party – opening night of Breaking Dawn 2 was fun, but I got to bed around 1 am, and got up at 6 this morning to pack for the Literacy Institute that I will be leaving for shortly here…

Had to pop in though and say “Hey”.

“Heeeeeeeyyyyyyyy.”

😛

SO in case you are wondering Breaking Dawn at points is cheesy… I laughed, my friends laughed – at points that normally you would not laugh at… at one point there is a confrontation and the entire theater laughed.  However just when I was about to say that the Twilight series is going down as a cheesy epic fail… it redeems itself and in the end I have, as well as everyone else… a WOW moment.

Nicely played.

Any hoo – more on that later.  I just wanted to let you know I am alive, I will have my laptop this weekend and I am home late tomorrow afternoon anyway so I will still have part of the weekend to catch up on other things.

Insert *yay!* here.

So hope your weekends are off to an awesome start!

Morning Meanderings… A Little Addition To The Book Room *SSQQUUEEE!!!*

Good morning all!  😀

I was MIA yesterday – unplanned, but there it is.  Morning was busy – then work, then I helped out with the students last night and then watched Survivor with my hubby.  The day flew by and now here I am and it is already crazy Thursday which = work 8 – 3, Pampered Chef party here at 6 and Breaking Dawn Part 2 Movie at 10 pm but get there as soon as I can after the party to get in line…

Then I leave tomorrow morning at 8 am for the Literacy Institute program until Saturday afternoon.

Ok…. I am going to need extra energy.  😀

But…

I wanted to talk about the book room.

The chairs came Tuesday late morning and they are so AWESOME!!!!   I really feel they complete the book room. I had book club at the house on Tuesday night and the girls really liked the lay out.  After book club ended my friend Amy and I sat and chatted and caught up in the book room… it was put to use right away!

So here is what they look like:

LOVE!  Ok, I need to keep moving, I am hoping to write my book club review yet this morning to because it was AWESOME!!!  (I say that a lot lately.

Morning Meanderings… Vi-Shape. Hmmm…. Here We Go.

Good morning.  What’s up?  😛

Two, three… (when was it?) years ago when I started the Morning Meanderings there was a little bonus to it that hasn’t been around for a while.  That “bonus” was I would talk about my work outs, what I was doing to keep fit and where I fell short.  It was pretty much a part of the meandering culture…

So…

what happened?

Many things.  Life for one.  And about a year ago when we put our dog down I kind of hit a funk throughout most of last winter.  I lost my desire to work out and keep up the healthy patterns I had once as part of my life.  I didn’t want to do anything.  I was content with just going to work and going home and lying low.  It has been a real struggle to break these poor habits.  Throughout the spring through fall of this year I did a lot of bike rides but hardly any roller blading which I love, and I haven’t been to the gym since June.  😯

Last week while spending time with both of my sons in Florida and Georgia I had a little wake up call.  College son does these shakes that his roommate got him hooked on, Vi-Shape.  Navy son works out 5 times a week and keeps track of calories using My Fitness pal – which is awesome and easy and free.  It was weird being on vacation with two guys who are both watching what they eat.

HELLO….. It’s called vacation….. 😆

Anyhoo…. I have always believed that each of us know our bodies and what feels like the right weight and what does not for us.  You can still be small built like myself and not feel you are at a healthy weight.  That is where I am at….

and I am ready to fix it.

I hope.

I mean, I am. 😀

I signed up to do the Vi-Shape (which my son swears by) and my first shipment came in yesterdays UPS delivery.  It’s two shakes a day and a healthy dinner.  I am going to combine that with using My Fitness Pal again because it really is an eye opener as to how many calories you are eating in a day as well as what kind of calories.  I am also going to get my hiney back to the gym.

If you have looked at my friend Reagan’s posts lately at Get Fit 2.0 she can be a real kick in the pants too.  I am so proud of her and she has inspired me big time to get my fitness blog back up and running as well.

My goals:  Back to feeling good and looking good by my birthday in February.

So there you have it…  that’s me – a new beginning that I am excited to jump on.  Tomorrow I will let you know how day one has gone and maybe (maybe…) have a post on Kickin’ It, my neglected work out blog.

Tonight book club at my house and the review of Language of Flowers.  I think its going to be great!  😀

Morning Meanderings… Looking Back

As I sit here this morning looking out the window at a dreary drizzly day, it is hard to believe that a week ag0 at this time my College Son Justin and I were driving a rental car through Florida into Georgia to stay the weekend with Navy Son, Brad.  The weather was in the high 70’s and the sky was clear.

Good times… Good times.

SO… for today’s Saturday Snapshot (go see Alyce at At Home With Books who is the master mind behind this fun meme) I thought I would post a couple of pictures from that trip that I did not post last week, as well as a bonus one from a previous event.

Navy Son Brad and I, St. Mary Georgia November 2012

Me and The Lorax at Universal Studios…. love this Banned Book character!

Hogs Head Pub in Harry Potter World Universal Studios… where of course we had to stop in and have a drink.

and a fun bonus pic…

My friend Amy (Wonder Woman) and I running in the Monster Dash in late October.

So that’s my post.  😀  I have written a movie review this morning and I am not going to write a book review of Charlotte Street.  Then I am going to drive t St Cloud (an hour away) to look at an ottoman set for the book room…. I am hoping my road trip will be fruitful as that is the final piece I am looking for. 😀

Once back home I will need to dig into the book club book and tonight we are going out to dinner with friends.  That sounds like a pretty awesome Saturday to me.

Morning Meanderings: Blog Projects and Low Key Weekend Plans (or… lack there of)

Ahhhh… good morning!

The weekend (for me) is finally here.  While my work week was a short one, my running around lately has been non stop for over a week so hitting the breaks over the next three days feels like…

BLISS.

Over the weekend I plan to do some blog work – catching up on my Where Are You Reading Map which is dreadfully outdated (ummm…I think I last updated in April) as well as update my challenges at the same time.  With a little luck I will post an update to all when they are current.  Last night I updated my embarrassingly outdated side bar to my current reads and projects.

I also plan to do some reading.  I have the book club read to finish, and a few books that I need to complete as well.  I am hoping this weekend will really be a great time to do some of that.  I may work in the storage room tomorrow if the weather works for me to clean and haul stuff out… in that event, audio will be my companion.  Whatever I do… I am trying to refrain from my usual “Yes” to everything ways as starting Monday I have something every day going on through next Sunday and I need to stock pile my energy now. 😀

If I can find my missing IPOD nano I may go on a bike ride this afternoon if the weather agrees as well.  I will have a review up today as my time with Rick Springfield’s memoir has just about come to an end.  (I am thrilled about this 😀 )

I hope everyone’s Friday is WONDERFUL!!!

What are you reading or listening to over the weekend?

Morning Meanderings: To Catch (and ummm… release) A Mouse

Good morning!  How ya all doing?

I had every intention of popping in with a meandering yesterday morning but circumstances did not allow such luxuries….

Let me explain.

Yesterday morning I got up and went downstairs to the laundry room to check the clothes I was drying the night before.  I noticed the mouse trap that I keep set in this room had been snapped and ugh…. I had a mouse.  (Our laundry room is the only part of our home that is old school basement).  I went to the dryer but then caught movement out of the corner of my eye…

the tail…

was moving.

😯

“Fresh kill!  Fresh kill!” And I run back upstairs…. whenever I see a mouse caught I have to wait to take out the trap (it is one of those snap open and reuse types) because I have to be certain the mouse is completely past tense.  I don’t like killing… but it is a necessary evil this time of year when the weather starts to turn cold.

So…. I wait it out.  I make coffee.  I shower.  I prepare for work… and then I head back down.  Good the movement appears to have stopped…. I could not stand it if it was suffering.

Oh, but wait.

Tail move.

GAH.

SO…. back upstairs I go and I grab an old towel and a spatula. Not exactly sure why but these were my tools of choice.  I go downstairs and scoop up the trap with the spatula and put the towel over the top.  I feel the movement…… eeeeep. 😯  I go upstairs and out the deck door where I hang the trap over the edge of the deck and hope hope hope when I hit the release button the mouse does not stick.  Ugh.

Please don’t stick….

I release and the mouse drops to the leafy ground.  I can see its hind end it squished, but not hind legs and apparently no vital organs.  He looks up at me and runs.

Mission accomplished.

Of course, I have named him “Squish Butt”

Of course, I am hoping he does not get back in the house and fall for the trap  that I have now re-set.  If he does, I think I will recognize him.

Sometimes… being an animal lover (yes, all animals) sucks.  I can not do the things that other people can do…. like kill a mouse without feeling bad for him/her.  Like drowning a daddy-long-legs when he is in the shower.  (I actually carry spiders outside….)

Is anyone else like that?

In bookish news I should be finishing up Rick Springfield’s memoir soon here and thank goodness… while fairly interesting, a bit crude… it is definitely TMI and too long to my liking.  I should also (hopefully) finish Charlotte street tonight.

Morning Meanderings… I Am Home… and brought back a totally awesome geeky mug!

Good morning from Brainerd Minnesota!  Yup… as of 8:47 pm last night… I am home.  I am not unpacked…. I am not showered… (TMI?  😆 )  I am due at work in about… ummm…. 45 minutes…. but I am going to write this post real quick before I move on.  😀

I did manage between the plane rides *blessedly uneventful* and the ride home to finish a book and an audio.  AWESOMENESS.  Really 😀  Tonight there is a good chance I will finish a second audio.

So for my geek moment of the day I have to show you the mug I bought at Universals Studios:

Front
Back

Which really is super cool on its own and Ithat is why I bought it but…. oh look what I discovered on the plane when I looked at it again….

Whoa!!!  What is this magic!!!!!   Yes, when you add a hot liquid the feet show up on the mug!  I was going to just put this in the reading room with my Potter books as a souvenir but now… I have to use!!!  And so I did…

SSSQQQQUUUEEE right?

I think I am going to purchase one or two more for gifts…  Ok thats my time.  I work, hopefully tonight I will get back to working out.  It’s good to be home 😀

Holed Up In A Bedroom in Georgia

Good morning from Georgia.  😀  On Thursday morning, College son (Justin) and I landed in Florida and had a wonderful two days exploring and experiencing Universal Studios – Harry Potter World (I know that’s not the right name, but that’s what I keep calling it)  We had a blast, rode the rides, had the butter beer, enjoyed the sun!  😀

As you can imagine – all you Harry Potter addicts out there… the park was AMAZING and I highly recommend it to all ages!  Here is a quick little clip that I took of the area but this did not capture it all… I wish I would have filmed more.

Then Saturday morning we packed up out of our Orlando hotel and drove our rental car two and a half hours to St Marys Georgia to where my Navy Son (Brad) is living.  He has weekends off so we came to stay with him our final two days of our vacation.  It is a blast seeing where he lives and it was awesome to have both boys in the same place!

Justin (left) and Brad in front of Brad’s house in Georgia.

We hung out at Brads did a little food shopping at Wal-Mart for our weekend and then later went to a Hibachi restaurant which was fun and oh so delicious!

Hibachi! MMMMMMMM

One of Brad’s friends came over last night and we played cards until about 10:30 last night when I was too wiped out to play any more.  They continued on to the wee hours of the morning so that is why I am holed up in the bedroom… I am awake but no one else is.  😀  I woke up at 6 am and caught up on emails and a little writing.  Now I am going to jump in the shower and start my day.  I have been quiet long enough 😀

My reading is still lacking due to the activity in my life right now.  I know the boys are watching the game later and I will do a little reading then and a trip to Wal-Mart to look for some new luggage (part of my long story about my bad horrible experience with Spirit Airlines)

Tomorrow morning we pack up early and head back to the Orlando Airport and fly home.  I will be back in Minnesota tomorrow evening landing around 5:30 pm and then driving the three hours back home.  The rest of the week I plan to keep as quiet as possible 🙂

Sunday Check List, MONSTER Dash, and A WHOLE LOT OF Fun Books!

Good Morning.  😀  For a while now I have been wanting to put my own twist on a Sunday post.  I like the Sunday Salon, but wanted to implement another cool thing I have seen occasionally around the blogs and that is when people kind of check list what they have going on in different areas of their life.  Today I am going to give it a test run and see how it goes.

Today….

I am reading The Late Homecomer by Kao Kalia Yang

I am listening to I, Steve Jobs (IPOD), Late Late at Night by Rick Springfield (kitchen CD player), Child 44 (car)

I am hoping today…. I can finish a book, write a couple of reviews, visit some blogs

I am working on… getting ready to go to Florida later this week

I am looking forward to… Florida and hanging out with both of my boys!

I need to… prep some books for mailing, laundry, return some items around town

I want to… watch a movie tonight with popcorn and a warm blanket

I am watching… a light snow fall

The books that entered the doors this week are:

All are review books except Lord Of The Flies is a win from Banned Book Week and fall to grace was a book I bought after a raving recommendation by a friend.

For those of you who know that I did the Monster Dash yesterday morning (and if you didn’t you do now!), it was cool out but wasn’t cold until I stopped running then I got COLD fast!  My friend Amy (AKA Wonder Woman) was a trooper and waited for me when I had to make an unplanned bathroom stop at an Assisted Living Home on route as I was not sure I would make it the whole way.  GAH.   I will post more picks of this event next weekend for Saturday snapshot but for one of us in action:

Running in the Monster Dash! Me and my friend Amy who will do just about anything crazy with me!

So that’s my morning post.  Hope your Sunday is wonderful.  Are you doing anything fun?

Sometimes A Book Comes Along That Makes You Drop Everything Else You Are Reading

For the last two days I have been a part of a Rural Library and Literacy Leadership Institute that is embarking on a seven month journey together.  This was our first meeting together and I was thrilled to be a part of it, representing along with two others, the Brainerd Minnesota Public Library.  I will write more later about what we are doing as a group, but this morning I wanted to share one happening from yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon when we broke away for lunch our lunch time speaker was Kao Kalia Yang.  She is a Minnesota author that not only overcame great hurdles to learn English, but wrote a book, The Late Homecomber that has won two awards.  I am sad to say that prior to this encounter yesterday I was unfamiliar with Kao or her book.

When we walked to our seats where we would be dining I was excited to see that we each had a copy of the book waiting on our chair.  I whispered to my teammates that I loved events where books were given out!  As we started our salads, this petite 31-year-old woman took the microphone and I wish (WISH WISH WISH!) that I had recorded what she had to say, but wasn’t sure if that was the polite thing to do and she spoke so elegantly, so passionately that I am not sure I could have held my phone up anyway.

I found this speech of hers on You Tube, don’t be frightened by its length, if you can listen even to the first 4 minutes of it you will get why I was so impressed on.

When Kao spoke yesterday I was so impressed by the passions she carried for her book.  I have heard other authors speak about hardships in their memoirs and it is like after talking about it so much they lose the power of the words they speak of – does that make sense?  Its like when they talk, it is so longer themselves they are speaking of but some other person.  This is not the case with Kao.  When she read from her book with such genuine emotion I knew I had to read her book… and read it this weekend.

SO this morning I will be putting on a wedding dress and zombie make up and participating in the Crosslake Monster Dash, but this afternoon… I will be reading The Late Homecomber and if it is as good as I think it is going to be…. look out Bookies Book Club I will be plugging this to you as well.  😀

Kao and I. Kao was born in Thailand’s refugee camp and immigrated to Minnesota when she was six. Kao is currently a Professor at Minnesota State University.
