Morning Meanderings… What Would Patrick Ness Do?

2a1

Whirlwind week already and I am finally getting a chance to chat with you!  Weekend away, start of the week out of town for work, and then…. what I want to tell you about today… the Patrick Ness event in ST Paul Minnesota at Magers and Quinns book store.

To bring you up to speed, Patrick Ness is the author of the Chaos Walking Series, the first book being The Knife Of Never Letting Go, which I read in fall of 2011 and flew through the following two books in the series.

SOOOO GOOD!

When I read that Ness was coming to Minnesota I could not believe it.  Currently living in London, his only Minnesota stop on his tour for his new book, The Crane’s Wife ,  was the day after the books release date, this past Tuesday.  Honestly – I really did not even know what the book was about.  This for me… was all about Ness.

1m

My friend Amy (crazy adventure friend and book club cohort) joined me, having also read and loved the Chaos Walking series.  We arrived early as we expected there would be quite the crowd, purchased our Crane’s Wife books at the book store and asked the nice book store guy if we would hold two spots once they set the chairs up, for the Brainerd girls who drove two hours to the event.  He said he would… and we went down the block to my favorite Thai restaurant.

When we came back, sure enough, two seats were saved for us right up front.  RIGHT UP FRONT.  Like, Patrick could have spit on us close.  😀

When he came out to talk he was funny, although admitting he wasn’t feeling well and therefore was requesting that someone out of the audience come up and read him the questions for his time with us…. and so…

Amy did. 😛

1q

The first question on the page was, “So Patrick, tell us a little about yourself?”

He was fun and interesting.  He talked about his books, and then her read a bit out of The Crane Wife, explaining that it stemmed from a story his teacher used to tell to the class when he was 5.  He said he loved that teacher.  He wanted her to be his mom and his wife…. at 5 years old, he felt they could work out the age difference somehow.

When Patrick read from the Crane Wife, although he denied it, his voice was perfect for narration.  I fell in love with the story – through him… and suddenly couldn’t wait to read it. He has a personal story within the book that he shared with us…a childhood happening that he tied into the read.  Again… I wanted to read the book more that ever.

2

Patrick talked about his YA books, which included the Chaos Walking series *sigh* and a book he released last fall, More Than This.  He says each book he writes has a theme song that he listens to over and over again during the writing process.  I found that fascinating.

I wish I would have taken notes, but early on in his talk I was uploading that first picture of Amy to Facebook and he called me out of the crowd …ok, not the crowd as I was sitting about 18 inches away from him and asked if I was playing Candy Crush.  Oops!  Embarrassing!  I put my phone away which is what I take notes on too… 😀

Patrick had some advice for want to be writers:

  • If you think you have a good idea, wait.  If it is good… things will be added on to it to make it grow in your mind.
  • Write something you want to read.  Do not write for the masses thinking you will create the next vampire story, or dystopian war story because that is what is popular… you have to LOVE it.   You will never make it through the writing if you do not love the story yourself.
  • Be original.  No one knew that they wanted a Harry Potter, until we had him.  No one knew we wanted Twilight or a Hunger Games.

19a

If you ever have the opportunity to see Patrick Ness in person, please do.  If I could have him come for Wine and Words this fall I would, but the man’s schedule is crazy busy.  Absolutely if you have the chance to pick up the Chaos Walking series – do it.  I love these books.  There is a little buzz saying they will be movies and oooohhhhhh I hope so. 😀

I found this one Amazon under his description of himself and loved it:

Things you didn’t know about Patrick Ness
1. I have a tattoo of a rhinoceros.
2. I have run two marathons.
3. I am a certified scuba diver.
4. I wrote a radio comedy about vampires.
5. I have never been to New York City but…
6. I have been to Sydney, Auckland and Tokyo.
7. I was accepted into film school but turned it down to study writing.
8. I was a goth as a teenager (well, as much of a goth as you could be in Tacoma, Washington and still have to go to church every Sunday).
9. I am no longer a goth.
10. Under no circumstances will I eat onions.

So in answer to my Patrick Ness question this morning, what would Patrick do?  he would write… he would run… he would keep it fun and keep it real.

Morning Meanderings.. Adventure Weekend!!!

2aa

Good morning.

SSQQQUUUEEEEE!!!!!!

Just had to get that out of my system.  😉

I am taking something off the bucket list this weekend.  😀

Ok…

SSSQQQUUUEEEEE again.

I am leaving this morning for the cabin up North and later today my friends Farrah, Belinda and Sheila will join me.  It is Sheila’s birthday this weekend and we are celebrating!  😀

On Saturday morning we will go into Duluth and meet up with Sheila’s sister where we will go DOG SLEDDING!!!!!  *bucket list item…. check!*  Then lunch and then off to Spirit Mountain for snow tubing.  😀  After that we will head back to the cabin for board games.

OOOHHHHH!  My kind of fun!!!! 😀

I think today I will be hours ahead of everyone so I will have some reading time a bit and prepping the house for the company. 😀

I am back early Sunday to switch gears as then I have a work retreat from Sunday evening to Tuesday noon…. I will be in touch as I can. 😀

Morning Meanderings… Author Event With Wendy Webb!

2a1

Good morning! Happy Wednesday Thursday!  This post was supposed to go up yesterday morning but I just could not get it done and get to work on time so you know… I need my job, so yeah.

Tuesday night was a late one but a fun one!  Myself and two of the girls from my book club, Brenda and Kathy, drove to the Cities to see Wendy Webb chat up her just released book, The Vanishing.

We initially had met Wendy when she was one of the authors for Wine and Words.  Wendy at that time had two books out, The Tale Of Halcyon Crane and The Fate Of Mercy Alban.

She was fun to listen to last night.  She read a bit out of her new book and answered some fun questions about writing.

19h

19e
My book…. SSQQUUEEE!

Some of what I took away was:

When writing, it is important to describe the action, like a director.  DO not say she was angry, instead say she stomped across the room….

Read like you just walked into the story

She described The Vanishing like a complex puzzle.  Wendy mentioned one of the books that she had read that really stuck with her was the Lace Reader.  She said that book, reading that to her was like reading about a complex puzzle.  At the end she knew she wanted to write like that.

Wendy considers her writing to be “Northern Gothic” – a term I found to be fun!  She had an article in yesterdays USA Today.

I left the book store not only purchasing her book…. but Brenda and I both bought The Lace Reader as well.

Our travel was… interesting.  Everyone kept saying they could not believe we had braved the weather from Brainerd to the cities.  I kept thinking.. what weather?  The roads were good… there was a light snow…. but on the way home I got it.  We ran into some serious snow and wind for a while.  Still… worth it. 😀

Today I need to get it in gear.  I have work and Navy Son (now Back In Brainerd Son) 😉 over for dinner and tomorrow morning I leave for the cabin.  It will be the first time to the cabin this year and should be a good time. 😀

Morning Meanderings…. We Are Off To See The Author!

2a1

Good morning!  WOOT!  2 cups of COFFEE in and I am a pretty happy girl!  Last night I hung out with friends and learned how to play two collaborative games!  Collaborative games are games that the players work together against the board.  Forbidden Island was one of them.  You play against the board to seek out treasures and work as a team to get the treasures and get to the helicopter before the island sinks…  good dorky fun!  😀  Gamers, I think you would enjoy this.

aaa

And today, besides my review going up for Stephanie Evanovich’s Big Girl Panties, that releases today in paperback (*WOOT to Stephanie!*), it is also the release day for Wendy Web’s the Vanishing!  Wendy is a Minnesota author and one of our Wine and Words authors from last year.  Myself and three other girls from the Bookies are driving to the cities tonight for her talk at Mager’s and Quinn bookstore tonight.  We are excited to cheer her on.

aaa

That’s my day – working this morning… playing tonight.  Hopefully tomorrow I will have some pics and recap of the event for my morning readers.  😀

Have a super start to your day!

Morning Meanderings… There Are Always Books

2a1

Good morning!  I am sitting here this morning of course with COFFEE CUP, kind of staring out the window into the whiteness of our corner of the world.  I can hear Hubby out there with the back hoe plowing a path from the back yard to our shop.  Soon he will plow the driveway.  I am tired of the snow already and I know there is more to come.  I need a second cup of coffee.

*gets second cup and returns to laptop and comfy chair*

This time of year there are so many reasons I don’t want to go outside – its cold, it’s slippery, it’s hard to walk, let alone run.  Instead – there are the books that take me away to places that are warm (like In Labor Day by Joyce Maynard), and places where the fruit seems ripe and juicy ( That Part Was True by Deborah McKinlay).  It’s also a good time of year to read through tasty cook books (like the Runners Cook Book I am reading now) and take in recipes that taste like the seasons I love – Spring, and summer, and Fall.

Here are the books that came in this week (I think there are a couple more packages down in our shop but I have not went done there yet today to see what they are):

1b

Creating Room To Read by John Wood

The Junction Of Sunshine by Holly Schindler

Black Crow White Lie by Candi Sary

Today after church is a day I need to get a few things done.  This is a busy week coming up with a game night on Monday, an author event on Tuesday, students on Wednesday, son over on Thursday, and Friday leaving for the cabin for the weekend – Sunday evening is our work retreat where we will be until Tuesday afternoon and hopefully another author event a week from Tuesday as well.  Yup…. busy next 9 days.  😀

Morning Meanderings… Last Weeks CONCERT!

2aa

Good morning!  Happy Saturday!  I think it snowed here again last night.  Poo.  I am sooooo over it.  😛

Last weekend I had the fun opportunity of going to Fargo with three of my friends and going to a PINK concert.  We have a little history with PINK that I posted about last week so we were a little nervous.  But – imagine our surprise when no unforeseen catastrophe cancelled the concert, we did not come down with some strange illness that prevented us from attending, our car made it to Fargo with no break downs AND by golly…. our tickets were good.  😀

For Saturday Snapshot this morning I thought I would show you some of the amazing concert:

1a
Upper left – yes that is her in the air. A regular Tinker Bell! The rest are different stage sets

2a

3a
She seems like an amazing person inside and out. She was funny and great with the audience. She stopped to sign posters ans shirts. She thanks ed the audience over and over.

At the end of the night we had our picture taken with the opening band, KIN from Australia.

and you have to see this short clip I took of her flying over the audience.

Basically, I am ruined from all future concerts.  If someone is on stage just singing I am going to be like, “What, you don’t fly?”  😆

If you EVER have the opportunity to see her in concert, do it.  It is much more than a concert.  It is a show.

Today, this morning yet, I am out for a run in honor of Meg, a fellow runner who was killed by a drunk driver while out for her run on the morning of January 13th.  I did not know her, but there is a Facebook event up called Meg’s Miles, encouraging people from all over the world to run today in honor of her.  As of a few moments ago, when I looked, over 80,000 people were signed up to run for her today.  Wow right?  If you run… or even if you go out for a walk today either outside or at a gym, please add your miles to Meg’s Miles.

Morning Meanderings… What’s Next On The Crazy List?

2a1

Good morning!  It is Friday!  There is a happy dance coming soon.  😛

After coffee of course. 😯

So last Saturday while I am on my way to Fargo my friend Belinda called me and asked how my half marathon training was going.

Meh. Was my response.  With the holidays and the business of work and snow storms it was safe to say I had fallen off track.

She was asking because a half in Eden Prairie had just been announced and it was for 100 people only.  DO NOT…. she repeated… DO NOT go on the website unless you are pretty sure you are going to do it she said.  Once you see the medal you will want to sign up.

SO once I arrived at our hotel room in Fargo you all know what I did right?

I went on the website.

2

and of course… signed up.

February 23rd and no, I dont know if I can be ready but I sure am going to try.  I may not finish it by running the whole way but I will finish it. 😀  Stay tuned.

In other news, set your DVR’s people…Flowers In The Attic the Lifetime movie is on tomorrow, Saturday evening.  SSSQQQUUUEEEEE!!!  I love this new preview:

Creepy good right?  I am soooooo excited!  If you have time… grab the book today and read it before the showing tomorrow… you know I want to chat about this 😀

Half Marathon Questions….

Any advice from runners out there?

Is it crazy to do my first BIG run in Minnesota in February?  (Probably do not need an answer to this one… 😉  )

What is the longest distance you have run?  (and yes to the bathroom does count)

Flowers In The Attic questions…

Have you ever read this book?

Have you read the new release of it?

Are you planning on seeing the Lifetime movie?

What snacks do you plan on eating if you are?  😛

Morning Meanderings: ANGRY Chicken

2a1

Good morning!  Thought while having my coffee this morning I would share with you a little story from this weekend after the PINK concert.  I think it’s funny…

So….  We get out of the PINK concert around 11 pm.  By the time we get through the stalled traffic lines and heading towards our hotel we are tired and hungry.  We haven’t eaten since 2:00 pm when we had lunch.  We decide we just want something fast and we will go to a fast food restaurant near our hotel.  By the time we get back to our area of the hotel however, almost all restaurants are closed. We do however see a Burger King and we make the decision it is this, or the popcorn and chips we have back in the hotel.  We chose the King.  😀

We try the door to go in but it is locked, closed apparently at midnight and it is now 12:02.  However, the drive through is open until 12:30. YAY!

We pull up and decide we are going to make it easy on the guy working and we are going to try the Angry Whopper, which, so you know, looks amazing when you are hungry.

2I know I know.. it’s too early here to look at this now, but the other night…. oh yeah.  A burger with bacon and onion rings on it… jalapeno and pepper jack cheese.  What is not to love 😉

SO we order 4.

BK Dude:  I am sorry our Whopper machine is broke.

Me:  What?  There’s a machine?

BK Dude:  It’s the second time today (he sounds sad)

Me:  Ummm…. ok.  So exactly what can we order?

BK Dude:  Anything chicken.

Me:  Alright… we need a minute.

Voice from the back seat:  Can we get angry chicken?

Me:  Excellent!  Can we get 4 Angry Chickens?

BK Dude:  Uh.. yeah.  I think we can do that.

Total of our bill with onion rings shows on-screen $31.34

We each pony up $8 and pull around to the pick up window.  New dude opens the window.

New BK Dude:  Your total is $24.88

Me:  Oh, we were told $31.34

New BK Dude”  Yeah he forgot to give you the 2 for $5 deal.  I fixed it.

Me:  Looking at the money in my hand.  Can you take tips?

New BK Dude:  Uh… I guess so.

Me: (handing all of the money to him)  Well here then, we do not want to have to figure this out.

Anyhoo…. that’s the angry chicken story – which seemed tasty at the time…. but not so much in the morning.  😉  Some of us… had angry tummy.  😛

2

Hope your day is awesome!  I have book club tonight so I am pretty excited.  We are reviewing Reconstructing Amelia and afterwards, talking about the book Labor Day.  I am making something tasty from the Reconstructing Amelia book….and still trying to think of what my recipe will be for Labor Day but I kind of have an idea.   😉

Morning Meanderings… Ice Ice Baby….nothing like a great story

2a1

Good morning from Fargo North Dakota.  I feel like I should say “ayyy” but I think that is Canada….

Last night three of my friends and I went to the PINK Concert.  Oh wow.  BEST concert I have ever been too…. do not miss the chance if she comes to a venue near you!  More on that later this week.

1c
Amy, Deb, Dee, and me…. in our seats at the Fargodome!

We arrived in Fargo yesterday early afternoon and ate at an Old Chicago restaurant.  Our waiter (Paul) was super nice but super busy.  We asked for waters right away and then watched him pass us many times with other things going on.  Finally I caught him… “The waters?”

“Oh yeah!” he said and off he went and forgot us again.  Pretty soon he did remember the waters and we waited about 40 minutes for our food.  At first we were a bit annoyed at the lack of good service but then we started to notice…

Paul was the only one working the 20+ tables that were occupied.  When he did come out with our food we asked him if it was always this busy.  He said not usually and two people had called in sick.  Ahhhhh…..

The food was tasty and we left him a very nice tip.  😛

1caaThese are the books that came in this week.  The top one I picked up at the library.  I had it on reserve and now I have no idea why…. (I must have read a review on it 😉 )

1e
This is our hallway in the hotel that leads to our room. Does this remind anyone else of a scene out a certain spooky movie? Can you name that movie? 😉

I have had two phone calls this morning that Brainerd Minnesota had an ice storm last night.  The roads are bad so we need to think about our plan for our travels back there today.  It is supposed to warm up this afternoon so we may hit a couple of shops in Fargo before we head back.

Hope your Sunday is wonderful.  I am looking forward to getting back home and doing some reading. 🙂

Morning Meanderings…. The Pink Curse

1e

Tonight, three of my friends and I are going to the Pink Concert in Fargo North Dakota.  Ahhh… yes, my first time out of Minnesota for 2014.  SCORE!  🙂

We have tickets to the 7:30 show.

We think. 😉

I am a little leery about Pink at this time.

Last February, we also had tickets to Pink.  She was going to be in Minneapolis. We had purchased our tickets through a friend who was buying a group of tickets.  We purchased them in November 2012 and we were EXCITED!

A couple of days before we were supposed to go we discovered we never had tickets.  😯   The girl who has purchased them did so through a ticket venue that had actually over sold.  They had called to tell her she did not have tickets and say they left a message which she never received.  The ticket cost was on her husbands credit card and when they cancelled the charge he did not tell her.  She was curious why they had not come by mail so had called and that is how we found out we did not have tickets.

THEN….

In November of this last year she was going to be in Fargo North Dakota.  Again we purchased tickets… and 3 days before the concert she had a throat condition that her Dr made her cancel her tour dates for a week.  We were cancelled.  😯

So…..

This is the rescheduled date tonight.  I am happy to be hanging out with my friends… but after having been shut down twice… you can probably understand my paranoia 😀 .  We leave town in about an hour.  If nothing else it will be an adventure… and if you remember… my word for the year is Embrace.  😉

Have a great day – I will be back tomorrow afternoon.  There are posts still coming.  If you have any concert stories to share… I would love to hear them. 😀
