Morning Meanderings… LISTEN TO ME!

Good morning!  Today is the final day of Audio Book Week.  SO why am I yelling in my post title this morning?  Because I have not had coffee in 4 days now.  😛

It’s true.

Seriously, I am not yelling, I am just speaking loudly and clearly this morning as this topic is an important one.  If you have been around here at all this week you have seen audio posts, audio reviews, and audio giveaways.  If you missed any of the giveaways, check out the sticky post – I have them all listed there and they all end tonight so get in on that deal!

AND you may have seen many audio postings around the blogesphere this week – people chatting and gushing audio books.  So now that you have seen all this wonderful information about favorite audio books, what to look for in an audio review, best narrators…. really what else is there to know?

Todays topic covers the how to find great audio choices.  We first and foremost, I pick up a lot of audio recommendations from other audio book bloggers.  If a book blogger I trust is gushing up an audio book that sounds good to me… there is a good chance I want to listen to it.

“But, Sheila (*raising hand and waving it*) I don’t have a clue how to find book bloggers who are reviewing audio books!”

No worries!  I am one of them, Jen at Devourer of Books is another, but rather than me list out off the top of my head who I know reviews great audio books, here is a great source:

Audio Jukebox is a place where any book blogger who writes audio book reviews may add their review to the list.  This is a one stop shop where you can check out what reviewers are saying about an audio you may be interested in.

Then, my favorite place for great priced audio books:

1 FREE Audiobook RISK-FREE from Audible

What can I say about my love for Audible?  First off, if you are a new user, your first audio book is free!  You can choose from 10,000 audio books titles to try!  The audio you choose downloads to wherever you want it to, I have mine go to I tunes where I then plug in my IPOD and it automatically loads on to there.  I love this!  I use my IPOD filled with audible books for when I am mowing the lawn, getting ready in the morning, working out… it is fantastic.

Uh huh… and after that first one what does it cost?

$7.49 a month for one audio of choice per month, $14.99 if you want two audio books a month.  And you are under no contract.  Stop any time.  I highly recommend, it click the link above and nose around – each audio book has a little sample so you can hear it before you decide you want it.

If you are looking for CD audio’s not a download that are priced well, try bookcloseouts.com, I recently picked up about 14 audio books there averaging 3.99 a piece and they were newer titles!  Also, you local library is a wonderful source to get you started.

That’s what I have this morning – I am running late to meet a friend for garage sales today.  I will be back later to see what everyone else is chatting about and yes – one more audio book giveaway later today and it is a GOOD one!

What are you listening to today?

Morning Meanderings… 2 Days Coffee Free and a WINNER!!!

Good Morning!  It feels like forever since I have just chatted it up with you!  I guess in reality, it has been since Sunday.  It has been a busy week here with it being Audio Book Week and I have been playing audio advocate and using a bullhorn to shout the benefits of audio to the world…

There are two days left of audio week and I am still on board, just wanted to do a life check in.

I am on day three of a Cleanse.  Mmmmm hmmmmm…..   here is what happened…  a friend of mine who had a baby in January started this 21 day cleanse the Monday I was in New York.  The week I returned she was on vacation and so by the time I seen her next and we worked together was after she had been on the cleanse for 16 days.  And wow.  She had super thinned down and anyway – I was impressed.

The cleanse itself once you maneuver it isn’t that difficult – it is just a new mind-set.  You can eat all the vegies you want and half the amount of fruit as you eat vegies.  You can have two protein shakes a day, and one egg.  You can use Virgin Olive oil to cook, steam, whatever.  You can have 1/2 cup of brown rice a day or 1 cup of lentils.  Rice noodles are also (1/2 cup) ok to have.  Your only beverage is water.

After the first 10 days, on day 11 you can add in a serving of fish or chicken each day through the rest of the cleanse that ends on day 21.

You picked up on the fact I am not drinking coffee?  😯

SO… day 1 went ok but at the end of the night I ate a Skinny Cow ice cream cone.  I am not a pro at this……  (the cleanse that is, the ice cream I can hold my own on)  😀  Day 2, yesterday went better, for dinner I cooked the rice, and then put it in a little olive oil with my one egg and mushrooms, onion.  Seasoned that baby up with Cajun spices and a side of asparagus cooked it a little olive oil, a little lemon and sea salt and it was delicious and filling.

Surprisingly, the coffee, or lack there of, has not bothers me too much other than I am a bit foggy much to the delight of my co workers.  I have had to ask questions on how to do things I know how to do.  Here all this time I thought I was smart and it was the coffee talking!  😛

But this morning… this morning was the kicker and that is what led up to this post.  I got up at 5 am with hubby because I was AWAKE.  Made the bed brushed my teeth, washed my face, put on night cream….

Yup.

I put night cream back on my face after washing it off.  I looked in the mirror and told myself, seriously?

So that is what is happening around here.  Oh yes, and the Literary Blog Hop ended yesterday and the winner of the Literary book of choice from Amazon or the Book Depository Using random.org is:

#12:  Mystica

Woo hoo!!!!  Congrats Mystica!  Email me at journeythroughbooks@ gmail.com to tell me which book you would like of $20 dollars or less – I am guessing this will come from the Book Depository but you can let me know when you email your address and which of the companies ship to you.  😀

And finally, today’s discussion is, What Makes A Good Narrator?

I think a good narrator surrounds you with the story.  You should be able to get lost in the words and not notice things like throat clearing, swallowing, chair moving…. that may sound funny but I have heard all of these things, but before you run away screaming “Audio is scary,” you dont hear this in a well narrated audio book and my hearing it is rare.

If the book is narrated well you move as smoothly through the story as though you were reading it yourself, and in some cases – even better than you reading it yourself.  The characters, the accents, the voices, should come off natural not forced.  As you are reading through all the fantastic posts this week on audio take note of the narrators people are listing as the ones to watch for.

For more audio book related topics, posts, and giveaways, stop by and check our Devourer Of Books Audiobook Week 2012.

And that’s a wrap for me this morning.  I am going to make breakfast and put a new sticky post up this morning and if time start writing my audio review for this afternoon as well.

Have a super day!  😀

Morning Meanderings…. What Are You LISTENING To?

Good morning!  We are now mid-week in audio week and I feel like it is going so FAST!  I need to tell our host Jen from Devourer of Books that I need more time!  I have audio books yet to review I….

Oh…. it’s not about me?

Ok then.  Moving on….. 😛

Current/most recent audiobook:  (For me, there are three…)

1.  Ravens by George Dawes Green, narrated by Robert Petkoff and Maggi-Meg Reed (In the car)

Impressions:

Fabulous!  Not only is this a captivating book, the narration from both Robert and Maggi is very good.

2. The Prophesy Of The Sisters by Michelle Zink, narrated by Eliza Dushku (In kitchen cd player)

Impressions:

Excellent story line and the narration is good, I find I need to listen a little more closely to catch all the details.

3. The Magicians by Lev Grossman, narrated by Mark Bramhall (In IPOD)

Impressions:

FANTASTIC!  This is such a great audio and I am loving the narration too!  I can not wait to review this one!

Current/most recent favorite audiobook:

That is a tough question.  I seem right now to be listening to three very impressive books, which is exciting as it rarely happens that way that all three really grab me.  I would say most recent 11-22-63 was so fantastic by Stephen King and narrated by Craig Wasson.  What an amazing story!

Favorite narrator you’ve discovered recently:

I am actually pretty impressed with Mark Bramhall.  I am fairly new to the narrator watching part of audio and have been just excited about titles.  Now I am getting more into who I enjoy narrating and watching who is winning awards, etc…  (I feel like such a newby!)

One title from your TBL (to be listened) stack, or your audio wishlist:

Well since audio week has begun, I have added Bringing Up The Bodies, The Bird Sisters, and A Land More Than Home to the wish list.

Your audio dream team (what book or author would you LOVE to see paired with a certain narrator, can already exist or not):

I don’t have enough narrator knowledge to answer this one… BUT – ask me again… next year 😀

And that’s todays morning Audio Book discussion brought to you by Devourer of Books.  Stop by and check out how others are answering these questions!  I know I will 😀

Be sure to check out my other posts this week, yesterday I had posted two giveaway posts and when I put up my audio review for today later – that too will be a giveaway post 😀

How would you answer any of these questions?  Any suggestions you would give me on narrators and or audio?

Morning Meanderings… So You Want To Review Audio Books…

Good Morning.  Note that Audio Book Week has invaded Book Journey.  My morning posts this week will have to do with the topic of the day that the delightful Jen from Devourer Of Books has put up.  This morning I will have another post up soon, a fun one that Leslie (Under My Apple Tree) and I came up with.  And forgive me but more than likely there will be a third post today, later an audio review with a giveaway.

SO todays question is:

Discuss the essentials of audiobook reviewing. What do you make sure to include? What do you want to see when you read other people’s reviews?

Audio reviews.  You know I have become better at reviewing them lately.  I used to just review them like one would a book, and for the most part that is true… but really there should be a few extras.

As an audio book listener, then reading a review here is what I would like to know:

  1. The Narration.  I am still new enough to audio that I can not pull many narrators out of my head, but I like hearing about them, and I hear a few gushings about great narrating I know to watch for what they are reading.  I also want to know on a narrator I am not familiar with (errrr…. most of them) how they were during the reading.  Honestly, a good audio book will not sounds like someone is reading out of a book.  Instead – you will get lost in the language, the rhythm and the story itself.

        2.  Length.  Sometimes I am in the mood for a longer audio book, and I will invest the time if it is a book that I have really been wanting to get into.  However, I like to know up front just as much as a 4 hour audio might make me go… huh… why so short, an eighteen hour audio will make me really want to consider if I want to dive into audio on that one or go with the book.

Those are my two big audio review tips for today.  😀  I am getting ready for work this morning, and will be back later this afternoon to check out what you are all doing.

My question I leave you with is – if you listen to audio books, what do you like about them.  If you do not listen to them, what is holding you back?

Morning Meanderings… A Bookish Weekend

Good morning!  😀

The sun is out (*fingers crossed) and hopefully we can stay dry and start soaking up this rain!  My yard is good, but I went on two bike rides in the past few days  with my friend Kate, and then Amy, and we seen flooded yards and streams about to spill over.  It is eerie…. but not as crazy as Duluth.

My weekend has been fairly low-key, I have read a bit both Friday and Saturday.  I listened to audio while weeding my garden, cleaning out a spare room, boxing up books I am shipping out tomorrow afternoon, and mowing.  Today I will have a little more of the same while I complete laundry, the lawn… and perhaps this afternoon sit in my swing for a while with a book 😀

I really love weekends like this.

This past week I received a video in my email that just this morning I finally watched.  It’s a recap of world book night, something many of us book lovers were involved in (I handed out Hunger Games) and I have a feeling next year it will be even bigger.  Watch this short 90 second video and then know at the end, I call dibs on making those cupcakes… I have an idea for that 😀

Have a SUPER Sunday everyone!  My blog hop giveaway is still going on for a book of choice valued up to $20 at Amazon or Book Depository.

Oh and I am a super goob (yes I said goob!) I totally forgot that my guest post was going up at Ryan’s(Wordsmithonia) yesterday, while he is on vacation, I am taking all of you to Maine!  Stop by and read all about it! 😀

Any fun things happening for you today?

Morning Meanderings… Hopping Saturday

Good Morning!  I feel like I woke up fuzzy… and that’s not a good way to start the day.  ANOTHER gloomy day here in central Minnesota, yesterday was gorgeous and I read a little outside and went on a bike ride, but today calls for rain… again.

ON happier notes, I am participating in Judith from Leeswammes’ Literary Blog Hop from today through the 23rd.  I am giving away a book of choice valued up to $20, so please check it out!  😀

On Monday I will be participating in Jen from Devourer of Books Audio Book Week and I am super excited for that too… I have many audio reviews and giveaways so make a note… it is going to be a good week 😀

Ok and finally – because of the grog fog… (I need coffee…), I will end this morning with my typical Saturday Snapshot hosted by Alyce from At Home With Books.

Every year when I go to Honduras, in front of this one store I see these two gentleman playing their music.  I am pretty sure the man on the left is the same every year.

They really are something to watch.

I have a little snippet of video so you can hear them too:

That’s my morning post.  I am continuing to read Wife 22 today and will be starting Prophesy Of The Sisters on audio as well.

Morning Meanderings… A little Bookish Travels

Good morning!  It is Friday and I can not tell you how happy that makes me!  FRIDAY!  It is my day off and it is a real day off!!!  By that I mean I am not buried in “to do’s”.  Laundry is caught up, the lawn (yes… my ever dreaded lawn) does not need to be mowed for a few more days… and the sun… dare I say it… is shining!

This morning I read a post over at Hurtled To 60 and Now Beyond about the real inspiration behind the book, The Secret Garden.  It really is a beautiful place And Frances Hodgson Burnet was actually a tenant there.  I encourage you to stop over and read the post – it really is fascinating and the author of the post (I could not find her name) was just there on Wednesday so this is what it truly looks like today!  Errr, well what it truly looked like two days ago!  😀

On Shelf Awareness this morning there was a lovely video called “How does a New Book Make You Feel?”

If you get breathless watching this as you see the titles and the emotions… then… you feel like I do.  I swear, this is such a  great time in the history of our world to be a reader.

Ok – I do have one small errand this morning… Sam (our dog) is about to get his first haircut.  I am going to drop him off now and will not pick him up until this afternoon.  As for myself, I suspect if this afternoon I am not on my bike – I am for sure on the deck.  😀

It is also the last day to take my Blog Survey -which I will either pull later today or tomorrow early morning.  I will post results.

Bookish Friday – what bookish thing are you or can you add to your day?

Morning Meanderings… Sun? Then lets have a giveaway!

Good morning!  I mentioned yesterdays storms here in central Minnesota.  At that time, and now until later in the day at work did I hear about Duluth Minnesota and the animals in the zoo (a polar bear and a seal escaped when the water rose high enough they could swim out of their cages! And unfortunately, in some cases a few animals drowned).

Ok… that is a downer way to start a post.

In better news, today, if I dare say it out loud looks as though it could be….

sunny.

I hate to even say it out loud as yesterday was off and on too.  I would look out the window at work and see the sun come out and think yes!  Deck time!  Then ten minutes later it would be gray again.. than later sunny… then, well, the gray won out.

And looking at today’s forecast is calls for storms… again.

Ok.. that’s a downer post isn’t it?

Well – for now there is sun so that is what I am going with and maybe this song is premature… but I need it so here we go:

Ok – as part of my book room lets get out act together project 2012 (you will see more on this in the coming weeks…) I have a book giveaway today:

Gorgeous cover yes?  This is a duplicate for me so leave me a comment today about your EXTREME weather memories (or maybe they are current…) and I will enter you into a chance to win this book.  I will keep this open until next Tuesday.

Have a super day!

Morning Meanderings… yet another Storm WARNING hits Minnesota (this time with lawn furniture casualties…)

Good morning. 😀

Excuse while I go grab coffee cup…. I am going to need the caffeine today.

Some people leave a trail of crumbs… I have of late, left a trail of grumbles regarding our rain.  I have grumbled on both Twitter and Facebook… and yeah, I have grumbled here.  I know some of you mentioned you would love to have the remain where you are at as your weather is warm and dry….

well I am talking EXTREME rain.  AT least every day this past 7 days, and pretty much 3-4 days a week all spring it had rained.  And not pretty watch my flowers grow rain… no it is  EXTREME “batten down the hatches she’s gonna blow” rain!

Last night the wind picked up so strongly it blew my framed pictures off the coffee table next to the open window.  Al (hubby) and I thought we heard an animal cry and I went and opened our garage overhead door (much to hubby’s amusement) so the poor thing could seek refuge if needed.

This morning I woke up and it is still raining and we are supposed to get hit with another round of storms this morning.  I understand that when we have had extreme heat, but we have not.

I took a quick walk around my squishy wet back yard this morning to see how things fared.  I had put the deck furniture away a couple of days ago so that is all fine but my yard swing did not fare so well…

This swing has been with me for 20+ years.  I know he was old, but he carried a lot of memories.  This is the swing I sat on when I got the news about my moms accident.  It is the one I rocked the boys on when they were young and the one I sat with one of my good friends was offered a promotion she was excited – and scared to take.  It has moved with us twice and sat in the yard since we moved here in 1996.

The rest of the yard was fine.  At least for this storm.  My hostas are extremely well watered.  Swimmingly even.

Now I need to get ready for work.  I am hoping this mornings storm blows by quickly and I can back to outdoor things I love like biking…rollerblading… sitting on my deck with a good book.  😀

Share with me your stories of sunshine… I miss it 😀
