Any Minute by Joyce Meyer & Deborah Bedford (Audio review)

Release_03

any minuteSarah Harper is driven to achieve success no matter what the cost. She wants to do good and not hurt the people she loves–especially children and her husband, Joe–but her desire to succeed in her career too often leaves little time for family. One cold, autumn afternoon, all of that changes when Sarah’s car plunges off a bridge and into a river. She is presumed dead by those on the “outside,” but Sarah’s spirit is still very much alive. What she discovers on the other side transforms everything about Sarah’s view of life-

-past, present, and future. When Sarah is revived, she is a changed woman. And the unsuspecting world around her will never be the same again.

Joyce holds an earned PhD in theology from Life Christian University in Tampa, Florida; an honorary joyce meyerdoctorate in divinity from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and an honorary doctorate in sacred theology from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Joyce and her husband, Dave, have been married for over forty years, and they are the parents of four grown children. Dave and Joyce Meyer make their home in St. Louis, Missouri.

On Thursday I spent the better part of the day in my Durango hauling my sons belongings 3 1/2 hours away to his college.  While in the vehicle that long I finally had just the occasion to pop in this audio book.  I really enjoyed this audio book and I am a bit saddened to say that I picked up on a little bit of me in the main character of Sarah Harper.  I tend to be an over achiever, driven, and many times over booked.  This audio book reminded me once again what is important – and what truly is not.

I really enjoyed the reader, Ellen Archer, and found she mastered this well.  I have never read a Joyce Meyer book before but I will actively be searching out her work now.

I received this audio book from Hachette Audio Books for review

This is a G rated audio

Introducing a Family of Bloggers: The Lateiner Gang Book Review Spot

Recently I have had the pleasure of chatting with Dave Lateiner about his book blog.  What makes Lateiner gangDave’s blog so interesting – is that not only does Dave write book reviews, but so does his wife Mara and their two daughters Lauryn and Sami.  How super fun is that?

So tonight, I am pleased to offer you this interview I have completed with the Lateiner Gang to see how book blogging became a part of their lives.  Please help me welcome them.  While Dave is the one responding to my questions, the whole family has had input in the responses.

Welcome Dave, Mara, Lauryn, and Sami!  I just love the idea of your whole family blogging about books!  Please tell me a little bit about how this came to be.

Dave:  We have been reading books for a very long time.  My wife and I 33, have been reading since we were little kids.  Our daughters Lauryn and Sami, 11 and 9, have been reading or read to since they were infants.  By 1 years old, they were each able to read.  Lauryn’s favorite  to read was “Just like Ernie” from Sesame Street.  Believe it or not, at 1, she was able to read the whole book by memory! Sami’s favorite was book was “Pat the Bunny”, which she could also recite by memory.  We usually read about 2 hours minimum a night each.  I (dad) had started using the website a year or so ago to go to blogs and read reviews, get recommendations, and share how I felt about books I read.  Soon after, the rest of the Lateiner Gang had found themselves doing the same thing.

A few months back, we received an ARC for Suzanne Colllins “Catching Fire”, the sequel to “The Hunger Games”.  As part of the deal of getting it, Lauryn was required to write a review for Scholastic of what she thought of the book.  She LOVED writing the review.  It dawned upon us then that this would not only be a great family project, but a way to give back to the all the authors, bloggers, publishers, and most importantly, fellow readers.  So that is how The Lateiner Gang Book Review Spot was born.  The idea was that with a gazillion other blog sites out there, ours would stand out as there are 4 of us, typically who read different genres and kinds of books, therefore able to give 4 sets f opinion rather than the standard 1.

How long have you been blogging?

Dave:  We have been going on blogs for well over a year and reading reviews, adding our comments and getting suggestions from other readers. After doing this for some time, we just decided to open our own site and see where it goes from there.  We have been “live for a few months but posted our first tactual review on July 26th on James Dashner’s “The Maze Runner”.  From there, we started off slowly, but are quickly picking up the pace.  Our idea was to really review books and interview authors that were our favorites.  Posting about every single book is ok for some people, but the one thing our readers know is that if they see a book on our site review or an author interviewed, then we love them. so in about a 6 weeks of “actual” content, we have had appx 1500 hits and just under 30 followers.  Of course, having a semi- background in marketing, myself and my wife have taught the children as well as us doing it ourselves, how and where to market our site.  The other thing we do is try to CONSTANTLY give away books as contacts.  And not usually any book, GREAT books that are usually signed ARC’s and occasionally an already published book that we loved.  We have already formed some relationships with some authors as well as Publishers.

Wow!  You have really put a lot of work into your blogging!  Are you all naturally avid readers?

Dave:   It depends on what your definition if an “Avid” reader is…the kids and wife usually spend about 2 hours a day minimum reading and then more time on the computer doing research or posting our link anywhere an everywhere they can to spread the word.  Me, I usually spend about 3 hours  night reading (more if there is a book i just CAN NOT put down, then I read until it is finished. I also spend plenty of time advertising for our site and coming up with good ideas…That reminds me, I will post about this, but I recently learned how to change the background and add a 3rd column to our site, so real soon (possibly over the weekend) , look for the site to look soooo much better!

Do each of you have certain genres that you like to read?

Dave:  Mara tries to read biographies or books written about people for example, “Candy Land ” buy Candy Spelling and her daughter’s book ,” Mommywood” by Tori Spelling as well as Chelsea Handler’s book.  She will also read something like “The Accidental Millionaires” about the 2 guys who started up facebook.  Occasionally, Mara will stray and pick something up that I have to twist her arm until she reads it and then loves it.

Lauryn is a Twilight buff for sure.  (irrelevant, but one of my clients is a photographer for celebrities and has personalized pics of Robert Patterson that we will post when he passes them on to me.  She probably is the one who reads closest to my style.  She can also be found reading books like, “I’m So Crashing Your Bat-Mitzvah” and “The Hunger Games”.

Sami, our youngest, loves books that are mostly appropriate for her age like “The Artemis Fowl Series” and “The 39 Clues series”.  Sami is not a fan of “Dark” books and for now, those I have mentioned are her comfort zone.

David, Ah, me  :O)   Well, I have to admit that I am mostly a YA/Fantasy/Fiction.  I love almost any book that fits into those categories.  I will read everything from “Catching Fire” to “Septimus Heap”, to “The Tomorrow Code”, “Thornspell”, “Flashforward”, “Alvor”, “The 13th reality series, “Maze Runner” and a bunch more….As long as it fits the Genre, I will probably read it.  I do have an author totally out of my comfort zone who is probably one of my favorite authors of all time, James Rollins.  Totally not my style, but boy, can he write!

Do you write your reviews alone or is there family input?

Dave:  For the most part, we do our own reviews.  The one thing we do is when someone finishes a review or interview, we all sit down, listen to that persons piece, and decide if we think it needs to be changed or if it is good.  What we feel makes us successful, besides having the 4 of us to write is our thought process.  We put ourselves in the mindset of someone who could possibly be reading something we post.  If we read the review or interview, and feel that we are psyched to read that book, or hear about that author, we know (or hope) we have material ready to be posted.  Essentially, we are the one reading the post, what would we NEED to hear to get us excited about it.  Once we get excited, it’s time to post it!

What does a typical evening at your home look like?

Dave:  I would suppose the same as any other household, come home from work, have some dinner, read, watch a bit of Television (only our favorite shows) and then either back to reading or working on our site, either posting, reading emails, or doing research as to how to improve.  We are always looking at ways to improve.  Always.  Oh, and we typically take a walk many nights in the week.  We live close to the center of our town, so we try to walk in there and just hang out for a little while, maybe pick up some Starbucks or hang out with other families we know.  It’s that type of town w live in.  Shhhh, don’t tell my family, but I wait for them all to go to sleep, then I crack open a book for another hour or so until I just can’t read anymore.  I ALWAYS carry a book with me wherever I go.

LOL… your secret is safe with me!   What are you trying to accomplish through your blogging?

Dave:  Our main goal is really to be a part of a community.  We feel like we owe these wonderful authors and all of those who have inspired us to start a blog, as well as readers.  We want to give back to them what they have given to us, happiness, referrals on books, and opinions.  We have read so many books that have been suggested online.  As a matter of fact, many times when we post, we ask that if you are going to write a post, please include a favorite book you recently read or a book you plan to read in the near future.  We get such a rush from writing a review, or interviewing an author.  It’s crazy, we get so excited at every single follow up comment that someone leaves.  It’s a feeling almost when an actor on stage finishes a performance, he gets an ovation.  Well, we get that same feeling when people write how much they enjoyed our review, or now because of our review they are going to pick up a book they didn’t even know about or were on the fence on.  We also get so psyched about giving away books.  We are currently running 2 contests for AMAZING books, James Dashner’s “The Maze Runner” and new author, Laura Bingham’s “Alvor”.  Our goal is to constantly be running contests of the best books we can get our hands on.  Next is “FIre”, the prequel to the best selling book “Graceling” by Kristin Cashore.

As fairly new reviewers, do you have any questions you would like to put out there to the more experienced bloggers?

Dave:  WE would love to know how to form relationships with publishers, authors, etc. to be able to get books to review and give away.  So far, we have just been spending time on the phone and email and it seems to be working, but there has to be an easier way.  Also, since I am a numbers guy, I was curious what sort of numbers were average, or above average…For example, how many followers do you expect over a certain amount of time?  How many hits on your site can you expect over a certain amount of time?  Besides this interview ;O)   where and how are the best ways to advertise our site.  Anything else you want to share with us, please feel free as we always keep our eyes and ears open for good ideas!

Thank you Dave and the rest of the Lateiner Gang for stopping by One Persons Journey Through a World of Books and sharing with us!  Readers, I encourage you to stop by their blog at The Lateiner Gang Book Review Spot and give them a warm welcome.

Dave:  Thank you so much for the opportunity to do this interview.

Best Wishes!

Fall Library Sale 50 cents a book!!!

I love the two sales our Local Library does each year.  One in the spring (Aprilish) and one in the fall.  The fall one was yesterday and even though I was moving my son to college on this same day – he knows me well enough to say that we will leave after I return home from the book sale.

At 8:30 am (later then my usual arrival time but had a commitment prior) I take my spot in line, anticipating the 9 am opening of the doors… I suspect feeling much like the kids felt that waited outside Wonka Land in the movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

At 9:00 am…. the doors open and I am in!!!  Books, books, everywhere!  I start

The Line to the sale
The Line to the sale

where I always do, in the oversize paperback section, my favorite book format.  I have wisely tucked money in my pocket as I know better then to try to fight through the crowds with a purse.  There is also the inevitable crawling under the tables of books where they stack the overstock.

I emerge by 9:45 am with a $26 total.  That’s right…. 52 books.  This spring I had spent $35 so I have done better…LOL

Here are my purchases:

Summer of Two Wishes by Julia London

Blog Tour
Blog Tour

… Reading this book I tried to imagine what this had to feel like for our main character Macy…  for that matter, what is must have felt like to Finn and Wyatt…. and you just know that somewhere at sometime in this world, this has actually happened… ~ Sheila

summer ofMacy Lockhart’s life shattered in a moment with the news that her husband, Finn —serving in the military overseas — has been killed in the line of duty. Their ardent and devoted marriage is over, leaving Macy alone, empty, directionless. But while she tries to sustain herself with memories of Finn, the quiet, strong man who made her and their small Texas ranch the center of his life, it is wealthy Wyatt Clark who slowly brings joy back into her life. Her love for Wyatt may be less romantic than the breathless passion she’d once shared with Finn, but she vows to cherish him, and their marriage is happy and as solid as a rock. Until the day that Finn, miraculously spared from death, returns home to claim his bride….

Well, as the back of the book states?  Whose wife was she?

I have never read a book on this subject line before and was surprised tor ead about the laws that go with such a situation…. still married to the first husband, would have to divorce him to make new marriage legal…. I guess that all makes sense, I had just never thought about this situation.  Apparently, our author, Julia London had thought about this subject… and out of those thoughts, same this book, Summer of Two Wishes.

I have always had a heart for the under dog – but without giving too much away, I will let you know that this book holds a few surprises.  I recommend this book for a late summer read with a touch Julia Londonof romance.  I have never read Julia London before, but I will read her in the future.

Characters that feel as though they truly live and breathe, London has created a page turner that will leave you at times excited to see what the next page will bring.

Wednesdays featured Book Club: The Women’s Nest Book Club

Here is week two of the new Wednesday feature….  our weekly Book Club review!  This week I am excited to introduce you to Melissa and her book club, The Women’s Nest Book Club!

Please welcome Melissa and The Women’s Nest Book Club!

Melissa
The Women's Nest Book Club

What is the name of your book club? The Women’s Nest
http://www.thewomensnest.com

How long have you been meeting? Since November 2007

How often do you meet? Daily, on-line

Do you have someone who leads the discussion? I start the discussions, but our members quite often take the lead, offering up topics for discussion and continuing the conversations.

Where do you meet? On-line, on The Women’s Nest, it’s a social community for women only.

How many members do you have?  We are all women, and our readership varies. We have over 2000 members, but have a handful reading at any given time.

What age group(s) is represented in your book club? 19 – about 60

What genres of books do you read? We read most literary fiction books.

How do you choose what you will read? I read book reviews and gather suggestions from our Book Club members.

What was one of the best discussions and/or a favorite book that you read as a group? We read Snowflower and The Secret Fan, by Lisa See – by far one of my favorite books.

How do you keep things fun?
We have authors as guests and they discuss their books with us when they are selected in the Book Club.

Does your group meet for anything else other than your book meetings?   Yes! We meet for author discussions as well as daily for general sharing of information and escaping the chaos of our daily lives. We converse on our forums about everything from books and movies to relationships, careers, jokes, and daily life issues. We’re more than a book club, we  have all become very good friends, too.

Do you have a funny or “book club meeting gone bad” story to share? Well, I’m not sure if it’s a funny one, but I have had to cancel an author discussion or two because of low readership. But that’s not fun to do, after all, authors are very busy and gracious to give their time.

What advice would you give to other book clubs? Book Clubs are hard to keep up, in many cases, megans way and I believe that whether you have one reader or 20 during any given month, keep going! The readers will come back, new ones will come, and like everything in life, it will ebb and flow.

I have heard that you are an author as well? Yes, I am also a new author – My debut novel, Megan’s Way, can be found on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.

Wow!  You sound like an amazing group.  I have never been a part of a book club on line but have thought about it.  Thank you so much Melissa for sharing about your book club.  Readers, I highly encourage you to stop by and see Melissa at The Women’s Nest!

I would love to feature your book club too! Link here to find out how!

Morning Meanderings…

“A book Best enjoyed with a slice of pizza”

Last night I stayed overnight for our quarterly IHN (Interfaith Hospitality Network) serving.  This is a big improvementwhere for one week a quarter, our church houses the homeless while they are working in this great program to help them find housing and jobs to get back on their feet.

Two of us always stay together and last night my roomy was Julie who just happened to have a Brainerd paper… and that is where my meandering is going this morning….

Yesterdays Brainerd paper (front page!) featured an area book lover, Barb Best, who through goodreads.com has been communicating with author Barbara Boyer and received Barbara’s book, Courage of Fear.  Barb Best was so excited to get the book, she messaged on line, “Got the book today!  The heck with making dinner!  I’M READING!”

and so… here is the story… (as printed in the Brainerd Daily Dispatch, Tuesday August 18, 2009 by Jodie Tweed Staff Writer)

Barb Best has always loved books.

But two weeks ago the book she was reading – actually, its author – loved her right back.

Best developed her love of reading while spending her summers as a young girl at her family cabin in East Gull Lake.

Barb Best, of East Gull Lake, displayed a copy of the book she won in an online contest at Varani’s Pizza and Subs at Checkered Flag north of Brainerd. Checkered Flag manager Zack Skogen, who is working in the background, delivered a pizza to Best’s home two weeks ago, courtesy of the book’s author in California, who knew through an online chat that Best didn’t want to cook dinner because she was anxious to read her book. Brainerd Dispatch/Steve Kohls

When there was nothing to do and no one to play with, Best would lose herself in a good book – Nancy Drew books were her favorite.

Best and her husband, Steven, have lived in East Gull Lake for the past six years and she’s remained enthusiastic about reading; last weekend alone she read three books and often reads at least three books a week. She maintains a large book collection and she and her co-workers in the plan records department at Ascensus pass around their favorite reads.

Since January, she has participated in a Web site, http://www.goodreads.com, where book lovers may read and write book recommendations, win free books and participate in discussions about books. Her co-workers in her department do, too. Best writes reviews of the books she’s read and she has won about 10 books so far from the site, often given away by the publishers or authors. She said she is honest in her reviews; if she doesn’t like a book, she’ll say it.

Two weeks ago, Best won an autographed copy of “Courage of Fear” by California author Barbara Boyer. Best was thrilled and sent the author a note, telling Boyer, also a goodreads.com member, she looks forward to reading it. The two developed an online rapport.

When Best did receive the book in the mail she logged onto the site to share the news with Boyer. She wrote: “Got it today! The heck with making dinner – I’m READING! Thanks for the book!!!!!” Best then quickly logged off to start reading her new book.

Boyer happened to be online at the same time and told her that they had to have lunch sometime and hoped Best enjoys the book. She also mentioned that Best should order pizza.

Meanwhile, Best did decide to order pizza for her family from nearby Varani’s Pizza and Subs so she could continue reading.

Boyer thought about it, then decided it would be fun to surprise Best by buying pizza for her family. She had Best’s address because she sent her the book. She called a Brainerd pizza place, explaining that she wanted to buy a fan of hers a pizza but unfortunately, the restaurant did not deliver to Best’s East Gull Lake address. However, the pizza employee told Boyer that he knew of the only place that did: Varani’s.

Boyer, who wrote about the experience on her blog, http://beboyer.com/blog/, said when she told the Varani’s employee the story and where she’d like the pizza delivered, the employee was shocked. The Bests had just phoned in their pizza order and it was in the oven. Boyer then paid for the pizza by credit card, added some pop to the order and had Varani’s put a note from her on the box.

After her husband answered the door and picked up the already paid-for pizza, he immediately found his wife and asked, “Who is Barbara Boyer?”

Best was sitting and reading Boyer’s book. Her immediate reaction was, “How am I going to explain this to my husband?”

In her note, Boyer told Best, “It’s always so nice to interact with folks who have such an enthusiasm like the one you have. Enjoy your read.”

Best was floored.

“It was really fun. It was such a neat thing for her to do,” Best said with a smile. She later went online to thank Boyer for dinner. They’ve e-mailed each other a few times now. “I’m sure we’ll keep in touch.”

And yes, Best liked the book. Pizza or no pizza, she highly recommends “Courage of Fear.”

“Everybody should read it,” Best said enthusiastically.

I love this story and I hope to run into Barb Best out there in the blogesphere as I do not know her blog, or if she blogs, but I would like to!  If anyone knows her please connect her this way!  🙂
