Morning Meanderings!

Coffee Cup and I are out and about at 8:30 this morning.  I have delivered Chance to school… stopped by the Holiday a big improvementGas for coffee…. yes the same coffee place I mentioned earlier this week in that odd morning meandering post….LOL

What can I say?  They have really good coffee!

And here I am now looking at a half day in the office and trying to plan out something to do with a 14 year old this weekend that he would like to do.  Never Ever dull that’s for sure.  🙂

I think this morning I just want to tip my Cup to everyone who made the BBAW possible as well as all of those bloggers out there that participated with great posts, fun giveaways, and more.  I have met many new bloggers this week and hope throughout today to meet even more!

So this morning…. my funny bone is apparently kicked into high gear and I have written this song to the tune of Wind Beneath my Wings.  (Be sure to hit the play tab at the bottom of the post so you can have the music to go with the words…)  🙂

Wind Beneath My Posts

(Or… the book without a review)

It must have been cold there on my TBR shelf
To never have been a Book Reviewed
You were content to let me read, other books

You always waited on the shelf.

So I was the one with too many projects
While you were the one that had to wait.
A beautiful Book without a review, for so long
A beautiful book longing to be read.

Did you ever know that you’re my passion
And everything I would like to read
If I can write that new review of you
You are the wind beneath my posts

You might have appeared to go unnoticed
But I’ve got it all here in my notes
I want you to know I know the books
Of course I know it
I would be nothing with out you

Read, Read, Read today
Your words take me so high
Oh, read, read
So much there is to read
So many on the TBR shelf
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you
The wind beneath my posts

LOL…. Later!

Morning Meanderings…

a big improvementCoffee Cup and I are on the road again… it is already time to take Chance to school and I am feeling behind before my day has even started.

What is with that?  🙂

Anyway – today I have wandered over to Author Joy Preble’s blog called Joy’s Novel Idea. This author by the way… ROCKS!  She is the author of Dreaming Anastasia and this is the book review that I am putting up today!  (I see on her site she has me set for yesterday and I thought I was today…. I am sure that is my error.)

Reading her post this morning about Rocking The House at Barnes and Noble (see?  I told you she rocks) was incredible.  I was excited for her and for this book….  so read the article…. and in an hour or so come back and see what I have to say about Joy and her book, Dreaming Anastasia.

BBAW – Interview Swap: Ryan of Wordsmithonia

What has been fun about this particular interview is that Ryan and I had connected through Book Blogs early on and were already chatting back and forth through Twitter and on our blogs.  I was excited to do this interview and get to know him even more!  ~ Sheila

Ryan, first I want to know about this avatar that you use.  Who is he?

Dr. Strange RyanThe characters name is Dr. Strange.  He is a Marvel supherhero.

When did you develop your love for books?

I had an unusual childhood.  We moved around a lot and even ended up traveling with a carnival for many years.  Needless to say I was never in one place long enough to really learn how to make friends.  It’s a deficit I’ve since gotten over but as a kid it was hard.  I had learned to read before headstart and I found myself turning to books for comfort.  They were the friends I didn’t have and they were my source of strength and escape as a kid.  They were my first love and still have a hold on my heart that is eclipsed only by my son.

Are you a lone reader or did your book interest come from a family member or friend?

I was and still am a lone reader of the family.  Now that’s not talking cousins and extended family cause I really have no clue as far Dr strange 2 this oneas that goes.  I am teaching my son the love of books and it seems to be one he is taking too.

Why read as opposed to do something else productive like errr…. lets say… sky diving?

Actually, I love sky diving, camping, hiking, horse back riding, snowmobiling, cooking, dancing, and a million other things.  I actually want to learn how to fence.  With foils and epees not sell stolen merchandise.  Reading however is my escape.  It’s how I relax, decompress, and feel better about myself.  It’s what has saved my sanity a million times and will probably do so a million more.

Favorite book?

Gosh, what a hard question.  I’m not sure I could break it down to one or even 10 or 20.  Some of my favorites that come to mind at this moment in time are: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, The Eight by Katherine Neville, Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory, The Thief of Always by Clive Barker, Watership Down by Richard Adam, Looking for It by Michael Thomas Ford, and the Last Herald Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey.  There are so many other books I reread all the time that I almost feel bad for not mentioning them.

Favorite genre to read?

dr strange powFantasy hands down.  It allows me to escape into a world that is totally different from our own that I’m able to forget everything else and allow myself to “be” there in that world for the period of time the book is open.  I’m starting to read horror/suspense right now as well.  Though I think it has more to do with the approach of Fall then anything else.

When did you start book blogging and why?

July 19th, 2009.  A good friend at B&N bookclub site, Deb of Bookmagic, had started her own blog a month or two before that and she seemed to be having a lot of fun with it.  So I thought, why not? So here I am a few months later and having a blast though when I started it I wasn’t sure how involved I would be with the whole thing.  I thought I would just pop on every once in a while and post something about the current book I was reading.  Now I’m having so much fun that I can’t help but log in and post.
What do you think is the best blog post you have written?

I’m not sure if it’s my best but the one that was the most personal to me so far was my first post in my Favorite Fictional Characters series. Vanyel Ashkevron is the main character of The Last Herald Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and is the first character that I was able to connect to on such an emotional level.  He is the one character that when I’m really feeling down I’m able to visit and feel at home with.  This was a character that went through a lot of the same issues I had as a teenager and had come out OK.

Your blog title, Wordsmithonia… where did that come from?

From Barnes & Noble’s bookclub site again.  A few months prior they had started a laurel system in which users could give laurels to posts they like for any reason.  Along with the laurels we were given different ranks as well bases off a still a not completely understood criteria.  One of the higher, new ranks was that of wordsmith.  On a lark another user, Kathy, made up the Kingdom of Wordsmithonia and appointed me her son and heir the King of Wordsmithonia.  It started as a lark and grew into something that is just now losing steam.  I love the idea though of a place were words and the usage of them is celebrated and revered.  So that’s the name I chose for my blog.  Not sure if I’m living up to it yet or not but I’m striving for it with every post.

Do you only blog on books or do you have other blogs out there on other topics?

Right now it’s been about books with the occasional appearance of movies and TV shows.  I had intended to maybe sprinkle some political posts in there as well but it doesn’t seem to fit in.  I’m a political junkie and one day if time ever permits I may start a separate blog for that purpose.

What do you find to be the best part of book blogging?

The community I have found of other book lovers is amazing.  I have found everyone to be supportive and welcoming and I’m not sure I was expecting that.  I think it’s one of those aspects that keeps me coming back day after day to post and read other blogs.

What do you think is the best blog post you have written?

Since it just happened last week I do.  I got Dark Time by Dakota Banks from the publicist.  I was so excited I did my own version Dr strange 3of Snoopy’s happy dance.  I had recieved ARCs from the First Look program on B&N’s site before but this was different in a way I’m not sure I can fully put across in words.

What have you learned from blogging that you wish you would have known in the early stages of your book blog?

Since I’m still in my infancy I’m not sure.  There is still so much for me to learn that sometimes I feel like I’m playing catch up in school.  I still have a heck of a time trying to get two or more images into one post without them staying together.  I was so thankful when I finally figured out, with Deb’s help, how to change to a 3 column blog.  So I’m looking forward to learning more and hopefully being at a point where I can be the one to help out.

What do you look for in blogs that you enjoy reading?

The blogger’s personality to come through in how they write is what I connect with first in a blog I haven’t been to before.  Great reviews or features are an added bonus as well as an introduction to books I haven’t heard/read before.

Share with us a little known fact about you.

I was a state officer of Health Occupation Students of America when I was in high school.  After 5th grade and until I started high school, we traveled with a carnival and I would go to school week by week in whatever town we were in.

Thank you Ryan! Please stop by and see Ryan at the very cool Worsdsmithonia!

Morning Meanderings….

Good morning!  I am back from the 150 mile bike ride and I am feeling great!  I posted last week what this was about and why I was involved.  If you did not have a chance to read that post, I encourage you to do so here.  The post explains what I knew going into this event… but coming out of it… I am so thrilled to have been a part of such a great cause.

The weather was fantastic!  Sunny and mid 80’s both days of the ride.  I LOVED it!  I met so many wonderful people from our team who bikes to support the camp that Connie started.  Not only is Connie’s story one of true amazement (that is in the post I mentioned earlier) but talking to her throughout the weekend really was an eye opener as she shared her journey with me about what it was like to be a woman with Aids through a blood transfusion for 28 years – from the early days (which were painful and hard to see people turn their back on her) to now….  (Yeah I know that was a run on sentence but I had a lot to say there …LOL)

I had a bit of trouble on Saturday when my bike was hit by another bike.  I was ok but my bike took a serious hit and the back tire rim was all bent up.  At first look the team thought I was done unless I had another bike to ride (which I did not).  Thanks to Pete on our team (who works in Brainerd at Trailblazer Bikes) he was able to fix the tire well enough for me to continue the ride.

Thank  you to those who sent me well wishes on this ride.  I cant even begin to describe how fantastic is was to meet the Team of Rhinos (our team name) and to just hang out with friends for the weekend.  I feel good – a little sore but nothing too bad and I cant wait to be a part of this next year!

Morning Meanderings…

Still biking – day two now and as of the time this post is up I should be biking from Hinckley Minnesota to Duluth a big improvementMinnesota…. the last 75 miles of this ride.  I wonder what I am thinking right now?  LOL  (Read about this ride I am doing here).

During my usual morning stride through the blogesphere with the ever full, ever wonderful Coffee Cup, I had recently read another great review on a blog called Bibliophile By The Sea.  The book is called Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls.  This is the author who also wrote The Glass Castle which has been on my shelf for over a year and I still have not read it.  have heard wonderful things about the Glass Castle and now seeing this book – I want to read it too!

Please take a moment today and stop over at Bibliophile By The Sea and read this wonderful review.

**I will be back in town tonight… hopefully after a successful (and not too wet) bike ride and a little reading time as well!  ~Sheila

Morning Meanderings…

a big improvementI am out of town… by the time this post is up I should be on my way Biking from Blaine Minnesota to Hinkley Minnesota.  (see post about this here).

I wasnt sure if I was going to be able to 1) Have time to post anything and/or 2) Have access to internet, so I have prepped a morning meandering for today and tomorrow and if I do get time to post again that will be bonus!

Recently in my meanderings (which can usually be described as an early morning – pre shower but not pre coffee, slipper clad version of me traveling with oversized steamy coffee cup in hand around the blogesphere) I came across a book that sounded… well…

powerful.

Over at Jo-Jo Loves To Read I found a review for a book called The Last Bridge by Teri Coyne.  I found myself rushing through the review trying to see where it was going with almost a sense of anxiety.  I had to go back and read it again more slowly.

Stop over at Jo-Jo Loves To Read and see this book, the review, and of course another lovely blog!

For those wondering…. “Did she take a book with her on this bike ride?”  The answer is absolutely!  I have brought with NORTH!  Or be Eaten (which is appropriate as I am biking North…. and I also brought Dreaming Anastasia – both of which are blog tours I am doing next week.

Morning Meanderings…. and my weekend plans…

Today I want to share with you my weekend plan.  You may have heard me through Twitter or through random posts a big improvementthis week that I have a 150 mile bike ride this weekend.  I am kind of nervous, kind of excited – but really want to share with you the what and the why of this ride.

I have done bike tours for about 10 years now.  A bike tour is not a race, just a ride at your own speed with many other bikers.  There is usually a small entry fee that includes a t shirt, rest stops about every 12 miles that provide water, and snacks.  I think the one thing I like most about these rides is the people you meet – the biking community and we as book bloggers can understand the importance and the fun of community!  🙂

So last year my cousin tells me about this ride…. not 50 miles like I usually do…. but 150.  I thought I heard him wrong.  Nope, 150 miles… a two day ride, 75 miles a day.

Your kidding, I thought.

connie
This is Connie

Connie Statz is a good friend of Jarrod’s wife’s mom.  Connie was given a blood transfusion in 1981, that 5 other people also received.  Through this transfusion, Connie as well as the other 5 contacted the Aids virus.  28 years later, Connie is the only remaining survivor of the 6 who were infected.  Connie has fought long and hard and has started a camp called Camp Benedict, which is a camp for Aids education and support for Minnesota families in which one or more members of the family is infected with HIV.

Connie says, “I contracted the AIDS virus in 1981, which puts me in a small group of folks who have had this 28 years.  When I contracted AIDS, AIDS affected my family, and there was nothing to help people deal with a member of their family having AIDS.   When I first started the camp 15 years ago in 1994, the funding was from the Benedictine Nuns, so I called it Camp Benedict.   What I started because I needed it isn’t about me anymore.  We serve thousands of people.  Now, it’s about helping others who feel like I did”.

So this is what I know.  I know that Connie is someone who I have recently met and I find to be an incredible woman.  She is a fighter, and her team that will ride in the Minnesota Aids Trek this Saturday and Sunday are called The Rhino’s.  In Connie’s words, Rhino’s slogan “Born With Horns” means being tough and getting up to charge every day.  28 years later, Connie is still fighting and her team Rhino’s money raised goes 100% to help the Camp. After I heard about Connie, I knew I wanted in.

This afternoon I will ride with my cousin Jarrod, Farrah, their 4 month old son Tripp, and friend Brian, to the cities to stay overnight.  We ride Saturday 75 miles from Blaine to Hinckley, stay over night, and then Hinckley to Duluth.

I am new to this ride, and I am excited to be supporting a wonderful cause… and nervous as I have never ridden this far before.  Laptop will be going with me so if I have a chance to check in Friday night and through the weekend – I will.  🙂

Word verification Balderdash (The Thursday Thing)

This is the weekly meme where I encourage anyone who wishes to play along to take those crazy word verifications balderdashthey have had over the past week and create a fake definition for them (much like how you play the board game Balderdash).  This is all in fun and makes commenting on blogs a bit more interesting when the verification may just give you the best definition of the week!  See original post here.

Not a huge offering this week – I have been busy and found that yesterday I had hardly captured a thing!  Here is what I have:

crudt: that residue found at the bottom of the cup (coffee, tea) afte you have finished drinking it.

exend: a false ending to a not so good  book.  You think well.. its over.  Then you turn the page and are shocked to see there is more.

BELT: Not what you think… BELT is the new and improved BLT, but this one is Bacon, EGG, lettuce and tomato!

lefeet: A much politer french version of saying you have two left feet.  Rather than, “Dude!  You got two left feet! Har Har!”  It is much nicer in french as they say, “Oh, Madame…. lefeet?”

Want to play?

I would love to see what you come up with!  To do your own, simply grab the picture meme and add it to your own post.  Link back to this post and leave a comment here letting my know you have and I will add your blog post to this one so people may see other participants.  Let the fun begin!  :)

Book Resembles Life

In July I went to Duluth with a few of my girl friends and while walking in the gardens we found a hole in the shrubs and they asked me to get in there for a picture.  Of course… I did.

The picture is actually kind of funny and looks like I am a garden fairy or something… for giggles (as I really like giggles) I put it as my Facebook profile.  This afternoon while doing my customary blog hopping I found a book on Brooke Reviews that the cover reminded me of my Facebook profile – minus the pointy ears.

You be the judge….  LOL

Seriously…. do you see this?  I bike 150 miles this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.  I really hope it clears up!  On the bright side… this is good reading weather!  😉
