Book Blogger Appreciation Week (BBAW)

Ok – I bit the bullet…. or perhaps the book binding in this case, and registered for BBAW.  I love the book blogging community and I am so thrilled that this event takes place each year.

This year, as the team that makes BBAW possible is working to always improve, they have set it up  that if you want to be considered for a category – you must nominate yourself.

*Gulp*  (this is where the biting of the book binding comes in…)

BBAW is a wonderful way to appreciate all the wonderful bloggers out there.  I had so much fun last year just joining in on all the happenings.  So now as we near the deadline to enter, I am officially in.  The categories I entered are:

Author Chat: Lauren Oliver (author of Before I Fall)

Today I am straightening up over here at Book Journey – fluffing pillows, watering the plants, and making sure the coffee is on!  Why all the primping?  Today – I am chatting with the author of Before I Fall, Lauren Oliver.

AND – here she is!  Please give a warm welcome to Lauren Oliver.

Lauren Oliver

Lauren – first off I need to know how you take your coffee?

Lauren:  Large, please, with lots of milk! No sugar.

Let’s talk about the YA years for yourself.  What was your favorite read and why?

Lauren: Oh, man. I’m not sure I know the answer to that question. I’ve always been such a voracious reader. I discovered Jane Austen when I was thirteen and must have read Pride and Prejudice about 87 times in one year; but, you know, I think To Kill A Mockingbird, which I read in high school, remains one of my all-time favorite books.

Before I Fall is such a unique YA read.  How did the idea for this book come to be?

Lauren:  It came from a bunch of different places, really. I really wanted to write a book about change; I wanted to explore themes of redemption and evolution in the context of a character who, at the start, is kind of mean and petty and self-involved. I tried to brainstorm a set of conditions that would enable a girl like that to begin to grow and expand and see herself in a broader context—ultimately, that became the mechanism of having Sam relive her last day. But that part of the book was almost incidental to the character, in a weird way.

Ooh…. I like that.  The characters that Sam hangs out with, are not the nicest chicks on the block.  Do these girls represent girls you knew?

Lauren:  I didn’t base the characters on anybody in particular, but I did base them on my understanding of how people can behave. Although Sam’s friends aren’t necessarily sympathetic, I do think they’re recognizable; we’ve all met people like that. We might have even been people like that. And over the course of the book I did try and reveal more of the characteristics, fears, and anxieties that motivated their behaviors. Even mean girls aren’t just mean; there are always layers and layers, and I think it’s important to recognize that.

Lauren, I like how you said that – even the mean girls are layers and layers.  There is usually something stemming the mean – and I think you bring that out in Before I Fall.  What is the overall message you are going for in the book?

Lauren:  I wasn’t going for any particular message, necessarily, but I think some of the themes that are important to the book are themes of connection—we are all fundamentally interrelated—and, again, the celebration of the fullness of other people. Empathy is probably the most important message of the book.

I see you have a book coming out in 2011 called Delirium.  Can you tell us a bit about that?

Lauren:  Sure! Delirium is very different from Before I Fall, but I’m very proud of it. It’s kind of a dystopian Romeo-and-Juliet story. It takes place in an alternate society: in this world, love has been declared a contagious and deadly disease—and scientists have figured out how to cure it. Delirium is the first book in a trilogy, which I’m very excited about.

That sounds good!  Lauren I am dieing (no pun intended) to know, what’s happening now for you?

Lauren:  Well, I’m currently working on the sequel to Delirium, which, as I mentioned, will be the first book of a trilogy. I’ve also started dabbling in some middle-grade, and my first middle-grade book, LIESL AND PO, will be released in Fall 2011, so I’m working on edits for that. I also recently started a development company with my friend and former colleague Lexa Hillyer (check us out at www.paperlanternlit.com), which enables me to really foster new writing talent and grow new book ideas. So I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire!

But what is next for me right at this very second is a burger and a dip in the ocean—it’s the 4th of July and I’m in Cape Cod!

Cape Cod?  I am jealous!  That has to be awesome!  It is tradition for me to ask you to share one little known fact about yourself.

Lauren:  Hidden talent? I can sing “Part of That World,” from the Little Mermaid, absolutely perfectly. And I also make the world’s best hamburgers; I learned the secret from my dad.

Thank you Lauren for hanging out and talking  with me – I will let you get back to your wonderful time in Cape Cod! Readers, you can find more about Lauren and what’s happening at her website.

Oh – and for those of you who have read the book…. I asked Lauren a certain question I just wanted to know….  and the question AND the answer are both to be found on the Before I Fall Spoiler Page.

Morning Meanderings… (tweek tweek tweeking)

Bear (bare?) with me….. I am tweaking again.  Tweak, tweak, tweak…. I should have never taken yesterday off from work because that gave me time to chill…. and blog, and visit… and think.  Thinking…can be dangerous.  So I came up with a couple of ideas (tweak, tweak)… ways to perk up the reviews (tweak), ways to do vamp up my author chats (tweak), and ways to announce the books I would love to read (TWEAK TWEAK TWEAK) It’s like a geiger counter.  😀

So one those notes (or tweaks) please hang in there with me the next few days.  I have a lot of posts I am working on implementing and  I am trying to pace them so my lovely (and appreciated –did I mention you are all appreciated?) readers do not go on blog overdose – leaving me here holding the smoking keyboard…..

Monday was awesome – I took the day off of work – unplugged my business mind but fully engaged (see tweak conversation above) my creative bloggy side.  E gads!  I got my hair cut, roller bladed, relaxed on my deck with lap top, then book, then lap top, then book, and a diet root beer.

I hope to post over the next few days: reviews (always), author chat (at least one this week but hoping to increase the amount of these I do – tweak tweak), BBAW post (must have up today – tomorrow at the latest!), WordShakers Book Club Reactivated (goal for this week peeps – bare (bear?) with me. )

Ok – I must go to work….   Thanks everyone for taking time to chat with this occasionally crazy (tweak tweak) Minnesota girl!  😀

Oh and P.S…. just kidding about the bears 😉

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

The Missing Element by John L Betcher

Right here, in my own home state of Minnesota, I open the pages to meet James Becker, recently retired government official, who has made his way back to his home town of Red Wing, Minnesota with his wife Beth.  While James “Beck” may be ready for retirement – he soon finds out retirement is not ready for him.  In short time he finds himself helping out a friend and Chief Sheriff Deputy on a crime of a missing woman.

Seems Katherine Whitson, a Minneapolis computer whiz, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances and Beck offers his help to see what he can find out.  What follows within the pages of this book is a masterful read of intelligence, intrigue, and enough humor mixed in to keep things Minnesota nice, and this Minnesotan laughing out loud.

I have to admit this book was not a hard sell for me to review.  First of all it is set in my home state and I do love to be able to picture the areas described, the roads traveled, and the sites seen.  Secondly, I do love a good mystery and it didn’t take me very many pages to realize that was exactly what I held in my hands.

John Betcher has created a character I found to be fully rounded – a retired Government Agent, a good guy, incredibly wise and good at what he does and fully in love with his wife.

Ok – stating that he is fully in love with his wife might seem like an odd statement, but I have to mention this because this is one of the thee in the book that really impressed me.  So often our detective/ crime fighter characters are either single, divorced, or married but you never actually get to see the wife as a fully developed character.  In John Betcher’s book, not only is Beth fully present – she is fully active in this book.  Beth is smart and completely in love with her husband and I loved how they had each others back.  Maybe this is just me seeing this, but I felt having such a wonderfully functioning couple was – well… refreshing.

I was impressed all the way around with the writing, the plot, the whole story.  As I finished the last pages I closed the book very satisfied that all the loose ends had been tied and hopeful that I could follow the roads that Beck travels again…

(Oh – and I was not disappointed to discover that Beck, does make an appearance in John Betcher’s newest release:  The 19th Element )

Cover Story:  This is a cover that would not cause me to pick up this book.  I hate to say that, because it is truly a wonderful read – but this cover does not sell the book for me.  I had to hear about the book from other sources, and still wondered about it once I seen this very plain cover.  I am here to tell you friends – do not judge this one by its cover – this is a wonderful read!

I received my copy of this book for review from Author John Betcher

Morning Meanderings…

Happy Fourth of July Everyone!  I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend.  We had a gorgeous Saturday here and we went biking (motor – biking) with friends.  It was a great stress reliever and nice time for Al and I just to get away for an afternoon.

I came home Saturday happy and extremely warm.  I finished up two books I have been reading and wrapped up an audio as well.  Reviews will be coming up over the next few days.  Not a lot to say this morning as I have an early commitment today – but have a safe and happy 4th everyone!  😀

Morning Meanderings…

Good morning!  Looks like it is going to be a gorgeous day here in Minnesota.  Al and I and a couple of friends of ours are going to take a motorcycle ride this morning around the area.  This will of course require the helmet that I purchased a couple of years ago that reminds me of something Schultz would wear in that old series, Hogan’s Heroes.

Ok, maybe it is not that bad….. but every time I wear it I like to say “I know nothing…. NOTH -ING!”  You would need to know the show to understand that line… 😀

Here is what popped up in my Email box this morning… these are the books that became available this week in either hard cover or paperback.  Joy In The Morning is one that catches my eye as it is written by Betty Smith, author of A Tree Grows In Brooklyn.

How about you?  Are any of these books on your wish list?

Remember Your First Time?

I was recently reading a review on a book that I have  LOVED  and I was actually envious of the reader.  I wanted to be them, opening that treasured book, innocently going in to the pages having no idea….

you are about to change forever.

Do you remember your first time?  What was “that book” for you?  The one that gripped you and hung on tight, and kept you up at night, trying to sleep but not being able to because you couldn’t wait to have that book in your hands again… almost not wanting to share the characters with anyone as you become this jealous reader type version of who you used to be…

Ok… maybe it’s not that bad.  😉

The question is – what book do you wish you could go back and read again like it was the first time?

Morning Meanderings…

Woo!  Sorry about my lateness…. I have been up, but doing other things and prepping my day…. and honestly I have so many things going on in my head right now for the “topic” of the morning that I couldn’t choose….  (yeah, I know my coffee cup is upside down)  😀

So fair warning – I have no idea which direction this post is going to go.

Ok – for starters…. is anyone reading, listening too, have read,  or considering The Passage by Justin Cronin?  I was in line for it at BEA.  Justin Cronin was there signing the books and he gave out his last book to the girl right in front of me.  Apparently his full shipment for the signing had not come in.  I did not know a lot about the book, other than it was plastered everywhere in large signs all over the convention center.

When I came back home, I found it on Audible.com and downloaded it to my IPOD.  It is 15 35 hours of audio so you know – C O M M I T M E N T.    I am probably a couple of hours in and seriously the jury is still out.  I loved the beginning, then it went a different direction and was odd and I was lost…. then it connected to the beginning so I was back – but now I am confused again….

Second random topic – I am excited to participate in the Book Blogger Appreciation Week which will take place in September of this year.  More info on this will be on a separate post.

Third random topic – you know I mentioned that I went to Eclipse with my friend Wendy.  What I did not mention is that she is crazy.  A complete loony.  Ok, maybe not – but here is the full size movie poster  she left in my office:

I also have June comments awards to do – and yes, I am doing that for July too…. just need to get things organized around here.  🙂

I hope you all have wonderful 4th of July plans!

Guest House by Barbara Richardson

One night, Melba Burns is driving home and witnesses a horrible accident.  The accident so completely affects her, that Melba changes her life style in that second of life and death.  The quits her job, removes herself from the rat race, and even gives up driving.  She retreats to her Farmhouse, which to her means comfort and security, Melba over her doors to a roommate who is a trouble magnet. And as Melba adjusts to her new life, of guests who are real and flawed, she becomes someone different, stronger, and richer.

I have to admit, this book is total cover love…  I mean look at.  Go ahead.  I will wait.

…………………………………..

As this book opened with Melba peering into the windows of the for sale by owner farmhouse, a line in the book catches my breath:

Is it lunatic to believe a property actually needs you?

That one line hit home for me… but that… is a different story.

Melba’s story moves along in a steady pace with a rapid introduction of characters that left me backtracking to keep track of who is who.  Yet, with a witty sense of humor and colorful well-developed characters, the book started to take on a life of its own and I soon felt like a guest in Melba’s farmhouse.

Thanks to the writing talent of Barbara Richardson, a book that could have been considered heavy is not.  Instead I found myself taken for a pleasant reading experience that as I turned the pages of the book, I became deeper and deeper into the read.
