Last night I had rented and watched The Color Purple. I am not sure if it was the timing, as I read the book last weekend, but the movie to me was amazing. How awesome to see Whoopie Goldberg in her first movie and in the lead role as Celie. Danny Glover (who I think is an amazing actor), Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery and Rae Dawn Chong, also have important roles in this movie.
I was captivated and while I usually multi task while watching a movie (book during low points, or my lap top catching up on emails…. instead I did nothing but fully absorb this movie. If you have not had the experience of watching the movie The Color Purple I highly recommend it – but…. read the book first. The book is much more detailed and the movie flows well with the book as an appetizer.
Ok… so funny moment… half way through the dvd, the movie…. stops. I have no idea what to do…. it just went back to the main menu. I couldn’t figure out what to do. I could choose scenes, but they ended where the dvd had. So… in desperation. I flipped the dvd over like a record. It worked! And the movie continued. I don’t remember ever having to flip a dvd before! (AND…. did I age myself by using the word record? LOL)
Today – work and probably a bike ride. Not sure what from beyond that…. tomorrow I will probably take my bike in for a tune up before the big ride on Saturday. I am pretty excited about the ride and hoping and praying that we have nice weather for it.
Have a great day everyone – I am off to update my Game On Diet Journal and then out the door!ย ๐

It’s been years since I saw the movie (at the theater, no less) but I loved it. I’ve never had to flip a DVD either. Strange.
I didn’t think so Kathy either. I thought maybe I blocked out the early dvds…. ๐
I bet at the theater it was awesome!
I read the book late last year, and I just watched the movie again a few weeks ago. Loved both! Whoopie did a fantastic job in that movie!
She really did nmfgirl, and I kept looking at Celie and thinking it was Whoopi but I wasn’t sure until i looked at the DVD case. I was so impressed with the movie.
I loved that movie (and the book) too, but it’s been awhile since I saw it! Simply must watch it again.
You’d laugh, Sheila, if you could see the stack of DVDs sitting on my office coffee table, ready for me to watch again. Every time something triggers a memory of a movie I’ve loved, I grab it from the shelf and put it on the coffee table. It’s actually getting ridiculous….
I remember records, too, Sheila…lol. But of course you knew that, since I’m older than almost everybody! Ha-ha.
What you do with movies Laurel – I do with books. Next to my chair is a stack that I did knock over yesterday….. I feel like such an addict, like I should hide my book problem….. but where… oh where will they fit? ๐
The Color Purple is amazing; as both a book and a movie! We have a teacher at my school who makes sure she plays a speech from a record every year because there is always one students who says, “Wow, it plays on both sides!” Maybe that won’t be so strange anymore
Helen it was so good. I rented it from the video store but I think I may need to won that one if I can find it.
I don’t recall seeing the movie, but I’m glad it’s good! I have had to switch a few DVDs over in the player, though. ๐
Hannah – I don’t think I have ever done that before. I felt like a kid must feel these days if they come across a record….like ummmmm….. whats this and it will not fit in the DVD player!
๐
i always have trouble with dvd’s from the video store…
i do need to watch this movie..the problem is i really really really dislike oprah!
(i remember records too…also 45’s and 8 tracks)!
Diana – as much as they talk about Oprah being in the movie – the lead is actually Woopie Goldbergs- and no worries, Oprah will give you no reason to like her in this movie…LOL, her character is actually kind of funny. ๐
Ok, I have only seen parts of the movie but never the whole film. Like Diana, I am not a real Oprah fan. But I have heard that it was great So now I will have to get the movie from Netflix. Thanks so much.
Sure Deb – let me know what you think of it after you see it. ๐
That’s a phenomenal movie, isn’t it? I saw it in college and wrote a review for one of the university newspapers. First review I ever wrote. ๐
Ahhhhh… Laughingstars66! And look at you writing reviews now! ๐ That is awesome!!!
My dvd of Gone With The Wind works that way too (a front and a back). Glad you were able to watch the rest of the movie!
Really? Alyce I have never watched Gone With The Wind. I know – but it is because I have yet to read the book and I have made myself wait. ๐
I loved the book AND the movie. It’s nice to watch them in close succession like you did. I guess I’m aging myself because as soon as you said “record”, I was thinking, well yeah!
and Kathleen I must be in denial because as soon as I typed I though… ooh, have I said too much? LOL
I remember records, 8 tracks and typewriters! I learned to type in high school on a manual typewriter…..not even electric! I’ll have to check out the movie, but I would like to read the book first. I received my prize today Sheila…thanks! ๐
Oh good Jill glad to hear you received it! ๐
(I had a typewriter but don’t tell anyone – our secret ok Jill?)
i am sooooo glad you finally watched the movie! hope it made my comments on the spoiler clearer! didn’t you just love shug’s song for ceile!?!? did you whoop and holler more in the movie than ever in the book!?
I loved that song Hodgepodge – that was really amazing. I was so impressed with the whole movie. WAY exceeded my expectations.
I can’t believe I never saw the trailer for the movie. Never mind – I just checked the date. 1985 was not a good year. My husband got transfered to CA and I was stuck in CO with a house on the market that had just crashed. There were too many months and too many crisis. Movies were far down the list of things to think about.
Is COLOR PURPLE out on audio? I checked Amazon.com and don’t see a listing. I know my husband would enjoy it. I guess we’ll have to share the movie.
Thanks for bringing this book back out to our attention.
Great questions Pat I think it is. I think if I remember right I almost picked it up through audible.com. It was in a $4 sale. I wonder if it still is ? I would love to have it.
I remember going to see this movie the Summer it came out. I was with my mom, brother, and great grandma who lived in Cass Lake at the time. We drove into Bemidji to go watch it. On the way back home we found a tick on my brother’s head. Not sure why that’s stuck with me this whole time, but it has.
It’s a great movie with an even better cast. I’m glad you liked it.
Ryan….
Just a minute I am still laughing….
Ryan….
nope not done yet…..
Ok – that was funny. I am waiting for you to tell me something deep and profound about the movie but you remember the tick. LOL
A friend of mine got to see them making The Color Purple because part of it was filmed near Charlotte, NC. I read the book, but haven’t seen the movie.
OOh that had to be cool Page! There are actually quite a few big names in the movie…. well, maybe some of them were not big names then – but they are now. ๐
I do need to rent this movie soon.
AND. when a DVD skips or jumps around, it usually is dirty – you can always take a damp cloth and wipe it clean and try again. Usually works unless badly scratched. ๐
HI Care! ๐ This DVD actually needed to be flipped – it had a side two. No kidding. The first part I found out was part A.
