Book Blogger Hop

I am kind of giddy with excitement that I finally remember to do this Friday meme.  I love networking and seeing bloggers styles of writing and layouts of their blogs so I am glad that today I can participate! 😀

ABOUT THE HOP:

This is a weekly event, hosted at Crazy For Books, where book bloggers and readers can connect to find new blogs to read.  It’s a great way to network with other bloggers and make new friends!  In the spirit of the Friday Follow, I thought it would be cool to do a Book Blogger Hop to give us all bookies a chance to connect and find new blogs that we may be missing out on!  It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs that they may not know existed!  So, grab the logo, post about the Hop on your blog, and start Hopping!!

Your blog should have content related to books, including, but not limited to book reviews.

If you start following someone through the Hop, leave a comment on their blog to let them know!  Stop back during the week to see other blogs that are added!  And, most importantly, the idea is to HAVE FUN!!

**This is my first time joining in so I am off to find hopefully a new blogger friend or two!  Next week I will let you know of any new blogs I found!

Want to join?  Pop – I mean HOP on over to Crazy For Books and let the fun begin!

Morning Meanderings…

Riddle me this… why is that when I go to buy my dogs these little dog foods I find myself studying the flavors as though I was going to eat it myself?

Seriously, I am in that dog food aisle for about ten minutes trying to choose if I want to get the smoked bacon and egg, grilled steak and ham, salmon, or the chicken and liver.   When the trance lifts, I almost always have more of the salmon in my cart because that just sounds good.

Sounds good?

My dogs have never showed a preference.   They happily accept whatever I serve and yet even picking it out of the cupboard I am doing it again…. “Let’s see… last night they had chicken….

OK then…. 😉

Today I have a workout schedule in mind and hopefully get all my planning set for next weekend when I go to Pensacola Florida to see Navy son.  I have my flight taken care of but have been so busy I have not booked the hotel yet.  Yipes!  I will bet here Thursday – Sun… hoping to get in some great weather and wonderful times with both of my sons!  (Yes!  College son will be flying with me to hang out with his brother!)

Now I did promise to have the video up for my “Payback” that I gave to Brett for “foiling” my office last week for April Fools Day.  Here is that payback:

**For some reason I can not get the video to work… will try another day 🙂

I hope many of you are going to bed early tonight and joining me and many other bloggers tomorrow for the Readathon.  🙂

Songbird Under A German Moon by Tricia Goyer

The year is 1945. The war is over and 21-year-old Betty Lake has been invited to Europe to sing in a USO tour for American soldiers who now occupy Hitler’s Germany. The first nights performance is a hit. Betty becomes enthralled with the applause, the former Nazi-held mansion they’re housed in and the attention of Frank Witt, the US Army Signal Corp Photographer. Yet the next night this songbird is ready to fly the coop when Betty’s dear friend, Kat, turns up missing.

Betty soon realizes Franks photographs could be the key to finding Kat. Betty and Frank team up against post-war Nazi influences and the two lovebirds’ hearts may find the answers…in each other.

But will they have a chance for their romance to sing? The truth will be revealed under a German moon.

I have read Tricia Goyer before and have enjoyed her writing style.   Under A German Moon is the first Historical Fiction read I have read by this author.

I found myself sitting back and enjoying this mystery suspense read.  Tricia has a knack of bring characters to life, and while her suspense is not “on the edge of your seat” style.… it is enough of an impact where you want to keep reading, you want to know what is going to happen.

As the novel continues on and Betty searches for her friend…. and somewhere in the midst of her searching – finds that she is also searching for herself.   Tricia Goyer puts historical details in place of building and scenery into this after WWII story.

This mystery part of the story I enjoyed more than the romance story between Betty and Frank.  As one who will choose a mystery over a romance read any day, that is just me.

Tricia blends the story together nicely and I came out the other side satisfied with the book.

About Tricia:

Tricia Goyer is the author of twenty-four books including From Dust and Ashes, My Life UnScripted, and the children’s book, 10 Minutes to Showtime. She won Historical Novel of the Year in 2005 and 2006 from ACFW, and was honored with the Writer of the Year award from Mt. Hermon Writer’s Conference in 2003. Tricia’s book Life Interrupted was a finalist for the Gold Medallion in 2005. In addition to her novels, Tricia writes non-fiction books and magazine articles for publications like Today’s Christian Woman and Focus on the Family. Tricia is a regular speaker at conventions and conferences, and has been a workshop presenter at the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) International Conventions.  She and her family make their home in the mountains of Montana. Author Chat with A.S. (Pete) Peterson (Author of The Fiddler’s Gun)

This past weekend I released to the blogosphere my ravings about the book The Fiddler’s Gun.  I had so much fun traveling through these pages that I had to see if I could chat a bit with the man behind the book.  Kindly, he said yes.  Please join us today over a cup of coffee -or tea, and welcome warmly, Pete Peterson, author of The Fiddler’s Gun.

So Pete, as long as we are in this virtual coffee shop…. how do you take your coffee?

Pete:  I’m actually more of a tea person. Which is a bit ironic I suppose since I do most of my writing in coffee shops. Right now I’ve got a tasty apple chai in front of me. They saw me drive up and had it waiting when I walked in the door, one of the awesome benefits of being a regular.

Pete, apple chai sounds good!  I am going to have to try that.  Please share a little bit about how the idea of The Fiddler’s Gun came to be.

Pete:  About ten years ago I decided that instead of wrapping Christmas presents up like a normal person that I’d lock them in treasure chests and bury them all over my parents farm. I drew a treasure map for everyone involved, gave them a skeleton key, and told them they were on their own. They had to solve the riddle on their map and dig up their presents on Christmas morning.

One of the riddles referred to a grave marker. I made the marker myself, a simple wooden cross, and meant to carve the name “Phineas Button” into it, for no particular reason. I didn’t realize until after I was finished carving the name that I’d misspelled it and left the ‘s’ off, turning it into a feminine name.
So that started the wheels turning. Who was this girl, Phinea Button, and why is she buried here and what does she have to do with all this treasure? A couple of weeks later my brother and I challenged ourselves to write books and made a bit of sibling rivalry out of trying to finish first. I won by a mile (even though his On The Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness was published first.)

So Fin’s story came out of that strange set of events.

Fin is such an interesting, full of life, character.   I think even the fact that she is a female in such a masculine type tale is intriguing.  Was there any reason behind that?

Pete:  It was really all born out of my stumbling onto the name. I tried to imagine why someone would name a daughter Phinea and it all flowed out of that. And early on I envisioned this young girl aboard a pirate ship, possibly even as its captain, and I wondered how such an unlikely thing could happen. That really interested me. I wanted to write a story that could explain, realistically, how a young woman, three hundred years ago, could accomplish such a thing. So I started researching the time period and discovered all sorts of interesting things. Like the legend of the Georgia War Woman, and real-life female pirates that disguised themselves as men for years, like Anne Bonny and Mary Reed. I tried to tie a lot of real history and folklore together into a single believable character.

I read in The Rabbit Room that your brother also has written a book.  When did you know you wanted to be writers?

Pete:  I think we’ve always wanted to write. He’s been telling stories as a songwriter for years and I’ve been writing in some form or other for as long as I can remember. But writing a book is a daunting task when you’ve never done it before (or even if you have) so I think it just took us a while to sneak up on the idea and finally say, “Yes, we are going to do this.” And we did. He’s published the first two books in his Wingfeather Saga (Wingfeathersaga.com) and they are fantastic, kids go bananas over them. His imagination runs a completely different course than mine so I’m constantly amazed by his writing. He’s working on the third book in his series now.

Having recently finished The Fiddler’s Gun I am eager to see where The Fiddler’s Green will take us.  Will this book be the conclusion of the series?  When can we…ok, I, expect publication of this book?

Pete:  Yes, Fiddler’s Green will be the conclusion of Fin’s story. I can tell you that Fin and the crew will get to see the “Old World”, the Mediterranean, but I’m not promising that everyone will make it back. I like to think of The Fiddler’s Gun as a story about how Fin got lost. She really loses her way, I think, and makes some bad choices in the first book so that at the end, she’s become stronger, certainly, but not necessarily better. Fiddler’s Green is the story of Fin finding her way home, dealing with the consequences of who she’s become, and learning to resolve the conflicting facets of her nature into a whole that she can live with.Fiddler’s Green is about 2/3 done now. I hope to have it out this Christmas.

Woo hoo!  Christmas present!  What’s next for you as a writer?  Are there other ideas, other books in your future?

Pete:  I’ve got a couple more projects in the pipeline. After Fin’s story is finished I’m anxious to get back to work on a Young Adult book that I started last year and am really excited about. I’m also excited about growing the Rabbit Room Press, we’ve got a lot of great ideas that I look forward to bringing to life.

It is my tradition around here to ask those I chat with if they could share a little known fact about themselves.  How about it Pete?

Pete:  Hmmm, let’s see… I’ve been woodworking for almost as long as I’ve been writing, and throughout the process of writing The Fiddler’s Gun I took up boatbuilding. I built two cedar canoes and half a sailboat as a means of nautical research. I also built my own violin which, along with a replica of a Spanish blunderbuss, now resides in a handmade case in my living room. Whether or not there’s a hidden map to be found, well, that’s a secret.

Oh, I hope there is a hidden map!  Thank you so much Pete for the brilliant book, and for your time!

Pete:  Thank you, Sheila. It’s been a pleasure.

Morning Meanderings….

Good morning fellow book lovers!  Come on in and pull up a chair.  Coffee is on and caramel rolls are fresh from the oven.  Cant you just smell them?

I am dancing a bit on the clouds this week because this past weekend I went and made a purchase that I am thrilled about.  I am now the proud owner of an IPOD Touch.  Now I don’t want it for music… I have a little nano for that and I take that one to the gym….  I wanted the IPOD to listen to audio books while I am bike riding.

I know, I know…. my name is Sheila and I am a bookaholic.

Come spring, I start doing long bike rides.  The first one is coming up April 25th and it is called the Ironman.  It will take place in Lakeville Minnesota.  It is a 35, 65, or 100 mile ride.  I am hoping to do the 65, depending on the weather.  On these long rides that can take many hours, I get tired of listening to music and think a book would hold my interest more.  Plus – as I start spending more and more time outside as the weather gets nicer, it helps me keep up on my reading while still being active.  🙂

Now researching audio books for downloading I discovered something.  They are expensive.  An audio download can be $25 – 39 dollars easy.  Too much money I thought.  So I took this dilemma to Twitter.  Thanks to the help I found from my fellow book lovers on Twitter…  I learned about audible.com.  On audible I was able to sign up for a 14 day trial and choose an audio for free for trying them out.  After the 2 week trial if I choose to stay with them, I pay $7.49 per month to get one free credit.  The credit is good for almost any audio book – and they have them all I checked.  They have other packages as well, and you can make individual purchases.  What I like is that you are not under contract and you can quit anytime.

So – wonder what my first downloaded audio is?

Do you listen to audio – either at home, in your car or while working out?

The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli

On a stifling day in 1975, the North Vietnamese army is poised to roll into Saigon. As the fall of the city begins, two lovers make their way through the streets to escape to a new life. Helen Adams, an American photojournalist, must take leave of a war she is addicted to and a devastated country she has come to love. Linh, the Vietnamese man who loves her, must grapple with his own conflicted loyalties of heart and homeland. As they race to leave, they play out a drama of devotion and betrayal that spins them back through twelve war-torn years, beginning in the splendor of Angkor Wat, with their mentor, larger-than-life war correspondent Sam Darrow, once Helen’s infuriating love and fiercest competitor, and Linh’s secret keeper, boss and truest friend.

•      •       •

War. A book on war.  This is not exactly a topic I leap for when I see books like this hit the shelf.  But saying a book like this, isn’t a fair synopsis – because this book is a different book on war… and the draw for me to this book, like a month to a flame – was her.  Was Helen and her story.

Helen Adams is an American War Photographer and she finds herself in Vietnam, going to where her brother had died and getting a feel of what the soldiers like him experience on a day-to-day basis.

Helen steps into her role willingly and naively and as the book takes us through the eyes of a photographer.  I as a reader, and Helen as a person – grew…  Opening up this book I learn that we are beginning with the end in mind …. we know the outcome and then we are taken back into the war to see how we got there. And The Lotus Eaters brings you to the front line. I found the book to be engaging and I wanted to know how Helen and the man she comes to love, Linh, get to where the book begins.

The characters are well brought out and I quickly found myself becoming attached to several of them.  I wanted to know where they were going, and if they would survive.  Truly an author for detail, Tatjana Soli left nothing to the imagination as I experienced Viet Nam through her words.  At times my breath caught in my throat as the details unfolded.

The vivid images that author Tatjana Soli paints of a war will remain in my mind for a long time to come.  I will be holding on to this story that was heartwarming and heart-wrenching all rolled into the combined pages of The Lotus Eaters.

Tatjana Soli is a novelist and short story writer. Born in Salzburg, Austria, she attended Stanford University and the Warren Wilson MFA Program. Her stories have appeared in The Sun, StoryQuarterly, Confrontation, Gulf Coast, Other Voices, Nimrod, Third Coast, Carolina Quarterly, Sonora Review and North Dakota Quarterly among other publications. Her work has been twice listed in the 100 Distinguished Stories in Best American Short Stories and nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She was awarded the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Prize, the Dana Award, finalist for the Bellwether Prize, and received scholarships to the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. Morning Meanderings (Butt Faced Miscreant)

Good morning!  I suppose you are thinking with a post title like that I must be in a funk.  Not so…. just a couple of things that I have been thinking about this weekend and this is my first meandering since Saturday so …

First – I feel like a goober because in the last few months several of you have given me awards for my blog and I have yet to pass them on.  In fact two of you passed on the bunny one to me and I thought it was super cool…. and again, neglected to post it.  I had a plan to post awards at the end of each month but that just has not panned out. I do appreciate the awards, they are so wonderful and I will get better at passing them on.

Second-  after rollerblading 10 miles on Easter Sunday afternoon with my 19-year-old son, I felt sluggish and like I was lagging behind.  I determined that perhaps I wasn’t in as good of shape as I was before winter.   GAH.  I have work to do.

This week will be a busy one as I prep a couple posts for tours (Lotus Eaters is coming up today!), work, workout, and find a place to stay for an upcoming weekend trip to Pensacola, Florida to see Navy Son (not this weekend but next) – oh and remember Saturday is the Readathon and I am super excited to participate 🙂

How is your week looking?  Anything big coming up?

Hasta La Vista Lola! by Misa Ramirez – GIVEAWAY

When Lola comes home to her parents’ house to find a horde of relatives mourning her death, no one is more surprised than she is. The news had reported that one Lola Cruz, PI was found murdered in an alley, causing great alarm in the Cruz family. Before Lola can say “boo,” a cop comes to the house. It turns out the dead woman had a driver’s license with Lola’s information. Between avoiding an unsavory ex-boyfriend, sorting out mixed signals from the very interested but not yet committed Jack Callaghan, and filling in as a waitress at her parents’ Mexican restaurant, Lola tries to find out who the woman was and why she stole her identity. Was the woman hiding from someone who meant her harm, or is there someone out there who wants Lola dead?

This follow-up to Ramirez’s debut novel, Living the Vida Lola, is a red-hot, fun-filled mystery. Lola, a black belt in kung fu who loves to salsa dance, makes for a sexy, unique, and vivacious detective.

I read this book in late 2009 and loved the wonderful, full of life character that is Lola.  Starting out by walking in on her own wake.  Yes – her own wake!  And the craziness does not stop there… page by page you fall in love with this fun loving family and everything they bring along with them.

I really picked up on a Janet Evanovich “Stephanie Plum” type vibe in this book so if you are a fan of the great Evanovich series, I believe you will be rolling with laughter at this one as well.
