Morning Meanderings…. Bueller. Bueller. Bueller.

Good morning.  😀

Did you all watch the game on Sunday?  I didn’t… not really.  I was supposed to go to a friend’s house and instead got caught up in cleaning a spare room that needed attention and after tearing that all up… well I had to big of a mess to leave.  😀 It was on the tv in the other room… and I watched the half time show and a few commercials… which really is what I enjoy most about the Super Bowl.

Which brings me to my point.  I being an 80’s chick…. LOVED 80’s movies.  AND if you have never had the opportunity to watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off get to your last standing video store (they will be thrilled you did!) or Netflix and rent this classic 80’s movie.  You will thank me.  😀

One of the Super Bowl commercials was a spoof off this 80’s movie and I LOVED it and laughed because I knew “Ferris” then… and I know Mathew Broderick now (well… know of him… not like I know him like we chat on-line or car pool).  As always I find the Super Bowl commercials BRILLIANT (not all… but some) and this one… well…. ROCKS.

LOL… I may need to watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off some day soon… LOVED that movie!

In book news, SPIN releases today and my super plan was to have my review go up today as well…. but thats not going to happen.  I am reading it … .but not done yet. 😀

Today I work and then tonight I have a two hour work out session with my friends Amanda and Christie (Wendy if you are out there… care to join us?  😀 )

Morning Meanderings and The Weekend Review

Good morning!  😀

Hmmmm…. I am thinking maybe I should start connecting to the Sunday Salon that many of the blogs I enjoy reading connect to.  I love reading about their week, whats coming up, etc…  and this morning, sitting here with COFFEE CUP, I feel like chatting with my bookish friends as thought you were sitting here with me.

Al has been out-of-town on a job this week so I have been working and working out and then hanging out at home.  Normally I don’t mind being alone but this weekend have felt a little stir crazy so I am glad he will be popping in later tonight and not leaving again until tomorrow night.

Yesterday I went to the gym and a Zumba class with my friend Christy.  Thank you Christy!  Prior to going I had no energy and was considering a nap (AND it was only 10 am!).  The class energized me and made me laugh as I am no Zumba expert…. but I have fun trying.

In the afternoon I listened to the rest of Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick on audio while cleaning around the house. I went into this audio thinking it was the last of the trilogy (check it out on Amazon – it actually says it is the last book!) Then thanks to comments here this past week I learned that there will be a fourth book coming out this fall.  That’s cool, but I probably would not have rushed through this last one… if I knew it was not…. errrr…. the last one.  😀

I hit the grocery store for a couple of things and at the check out impulse bought the new March edition of Every Day With Rachael Ray…. they had a recipe in there for Tortilla Soup that caught my eye….

Note - this is not the March 2012 edition but I could not find a pic of that one on line....

I wrote a couple of reviews, talked with a friend on the phone (twice!) and eventually ordered a vegie pizza for delivery and watched the movie What’s Your Number? which was sent to me for review.  (Review to come this week).

This morning I am on my way to church, have work out plans this afternoon, then home to hopefully do some writing and make soup!  😀  I am working towards healthier eating (ignore the vegie pizza above!) to get ready for some fun activities coming this spring through fall that are going to challenge me physically.  More on that…. later. 🙂

Have an awesome Sunday everyone!  😀

Morning Meanderings…

Good morning!  SATURDAY!!!!  Did you know this is my favorite day of the week?  I love Saturdays, they are days that only have things “to do” in them (usually) that I put there… not put there for me :D.  Today is one of those Saturdays.  I am going to go help a friend this morning and then hit the gym for Zumba after that.

Then I think I will be home.  I would love to do a little reading… and little writing.

For Alyce’s Saturday Snapshot I thought I would post some old pics’.  Don’t you love old pictures?  I always look at them in awe when I think how much photography has changed in just a couple of generations…. we can do so much with a picture now…

This is my Uncle Dallas on the bike and my mom, Elaine riding on the back. My mom said her nick name growing up was "ping pong" because her hair was white blond as a child.

Neither of the pictures have dates on them but my mom was born in 1948 so I am guessing the top pic has to be the early 50’s and the lower pic as my Aunt Jackie is older than my mom would have to be mid to late 40’s.

That’s it for this morning… working on a review for this afternoon. 😀

Morning Meanderings… Bookish whereabouts….

Good morning!  A quiet one here at the DeChantal home but a productive one book wise…. 😀

This morning I woke up at 2:30 am…. probably because I went to bed at 9:30 (I know – so weird for me, I am a midnight girl!)  Awake, I worked on my bedside read of Every Last Sandwich by Lee Lipenthal.  I have been struggling a bit with this one and hope to finish it later today.

I went back to sleep about 3:15 am and then got up at 6:15 am.  First stop would be brush my teeth and I turned on my audio book of 11-22-63 by Stephen King and continued on his adventures back in time…. (it sounds odd – but trust me it is FANTASTIC!).

Then I got in the jeep and went to fill our wood stove (yup… I am on stove duty the next three weeks!) and listened to Bitter Melon by Cara Chow my current car audio.  I am enjoying this one too!  Back in the house I made coffee to Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick… also getting good.

Now – as I continue to get ready for work and back to 11-22-63, I have to say yay for the weekend.  I really have nothing planned other than work outs and maybe some reading and writing.

How about you – what is on your weekend agenda?  😀

Morning Meanderings…. Woo Hoo! My Book Club Is In A Book!

Good morning!  I am running out the door to treat myself to a Carribou Coffee this morning so only have a minute to sqquueeee  and share that my book club has been mentioned in a book!

Last spring I was contacted by the author of this book because she had seen a post I had written about our book club and seen that we like to bring food that has to do with the book we are reading.  That is what the Book Club Cook Book is all about.  She had a list of books she wanted to be in the book and wanted book clubs to take a couple of those reads, read them and make food surrounding the book and then share with her (Judy Gelman) the review and the food we had.

Thats normally not the way out book club rolls, we vote on a book as a group and then read it – but I asked the group is some of us were willing to do a couple of bonus reads…. an additional book to our normal stream and they said yes.  We read and reviewed Olive Kitteridge and Little Bee.  We also read and reviewed Cutting For Stone for this, but we were not chosen for that read (although…. I have to say the food we served with Cutting For Stone was amazing!)

So there it is.  That was fun and exciting!

I am off to work and a work out later and then back home later to go through this book!  😀

February! What to read… what to read…

Good morning!  *grabs COFFEE cup….. BIG SWIG*

It is now day two of my sabbatical from men.

LOL – just kidding,  😛

Hubby Al is actually working a job out of town and I have been working, working out, a little reading…  I have woke up early the past couple of days which I actually like.  Time to have my COFFEE, and slowly ease into the day… ’cause if your life is like mine…. once the day starts….its full speed ahead to the end.

Back to February.  Can you believe it?  Its baffling…. really.  Seems like just yesterday it was January….  😉  I organized what I have read in January last night and was pretty pleased with my start to the year.  Question is… how will it go this month or the next?  It’s always easier to sit and read when its cold outside….

This morning I received in my email a list of the Best Of February.  Always curious to see if I am missing out on anything… here is that list:

Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo

I have read none of these.  Have you?  Out of the list two interest me… maybe three.  Defending Jacob sounds pretty good, The Snow Child is one I have been seeing around and has me interested, and I am not really sure at this time what Immortal Bird is about…. but I am going to check it out.

Have you read any of these?  Do you hope to/want to?  Are there any books that should have been on this list and are not?

Morning Meanderings…. A Run In With My Nemesis

Good morning all!  How are we this morning?  I am on cup of COFFEE number two, been up since 5:30 and actually feeling pretty good.  I have almost shaken off the cold/flu thing entirely and am almost ready to conquer my day (after I get ready for work, warm up my car, and pack my gym bag…)  😛

So… about the post title.

Yesterday afternoon after running home quickly after 5 pm to let the dog out, fill the stove, and grab a couple of things before I was out the door again…. I stopped by my mail box and there she was.

I knew eventually we would run into each other.  I mean, it is a small world and all and I had no illusion that I would continue my life happily never crossing paths again…. in fact, I suppose in some sick twisted way, I had hoped this would happen.  That I would have to face her and try again to work this crazy rivalry out.

And so it happened.  She was at my mailbox….  I had my mail, I ripped open a large manilla envelope while driving (kids – only trained book lovers should attempt this)… and there she was….

Jane Eyre.

I think….

I may have screamed.

Honestly, this is not the first time I raved about her.  And in all honesty, I agreed to this encounter.  When Harper Perennial emailed me with a request to read and review Ms. Eyre… I had a mini fit, stomped my feet, slammed my laptop shut, eventually came back to the laptop, wiped away my tears and said…..  “She is a difficult woman but yes, I would like to try.”  (Honestly I did tell them that I have struggled trying to read her for years and would like the chance to try try TRY again).

So here we are.  Jane and I in the same house.  I think I will challenge myself to so many pages a week or something.  Maybe baby steps is the way to go.  I know many of you love her.  I don’t know why she hates me…. but she does.  I have never been able to read beyond the first few chapters without putting myself into a book coma.  I think she has magical (and evil) powers and she drugs me….   there is no reason why I should not be able to love this book too… but this will be my fifth attempt.

Be strong for me.

Do you have any books that are considered by the world to be “Amazing!”  “I couldn’t put it down!”  BEST book ever!” and you sit on the sidelines mumbling, “yeah…. not so much.”

If so please share with me…. I would love to know I am not alone.

"Sheila, I take my coffee black because I do not have time to harvest sugar or make the creamer."

Oh – and if I disappear from the blogosphere….. remember…. I was last seen with Jane.  She may be small… but she is feisty.  😯

Morning Meanderings…. NEVER Say Never

Good morning!!!

UP early – ready to go…. things to do…. things to do….

Do I feel better?  For the most part, yes.  Not 100% and I did just sneeze… but I am moving.

Do you have any of those authors you read and then one day you decide… never again?  I had that with Stephen King.  As a teen and early 20’s – LOVED just about everything he wrote.  In fact between him and Dean Koontz…. my favorite genre at the time was dark mystery with a touch occasionally of horror.  (My how times have a changed….LOL)

Then… at some point… his writing became just odd.  I didn’t get it… I didn’t want to get it… and I gave up on King, never to be read again by me.

There’s that word never.

But who was to know that someday in the future that King would write something that would make me curious.  Who among us seen 11-22-63 coming from this author?  Not me….  and even when it did I was skeptical…. but I added it to my wish list anyway, just in case… and then the positive murmurs began.

The final selling point for me was Kathy from Bermuda Onion said she was listening to it and enjoying it very much.  I knew then my next audible credit would go to this audio chunkster… 30+ hours of audio is a BIG commitment…. but I did it a couple of days ago and I am into the story and…

wow.

Not only so far has King impressed me with this story of going back in time to save Kennedy on that fatal day, it’s not cheesy weird.  It’s actually something I can visualize… and I like it.  It’s also smart and I have to tell you it is scoring big time with me.  As in this story, a way has been found to go back in time, yet each consecutive time you go back it sets everything you have done previously back to the way it was.  Basically – you have to do it right… and then never go back again.  AND no matter how long you are in the past – when you return to the future only two minutes have past, errr.. in the future.

Looking for a good read or a good way to spend your audible credit that is worthy?  I think…. this may very well be it.  Treat yourself.  Surprise yourself.  Way to go King.

Morning Meanderings… a little road trip this morning

Good morning.  Still under the weather here… a little sniffly and a little sneezy (that sounds like two dwarfs!) still, but moving forward.  That said, it did not stop me from putting a baseball cap on my head, throwing on tennis shoes and a sweatshirt over my t shirt and sleep pants and taking a drive down the road to capture some pictures this morning for Alyce’s Saturday Snapshot.

Just down the road from where I live is The old Brainerd State Hospital.  Once a flourishing environment of 22 large buildings and many State jobs, the hospital opened in 1958 and was able to house as many as 1,500 patients.  In fact, in 1981, my first job was there, I worked in building 16 one summer as an activity assistant.  I wasn’t old enough to drive then, but I road my bike to and from, Monday through Friday.  Being a state job, it was the best pay scale I had for many years to come.

As Health Treatment philosophy changed in the later 1980’s the patient load declined rapidly until as of the last few years, the only buildings being used are 20,21, and 22.  Last month they began to demo the other buildings.

I have lived in this home for the most part, since I was 3 years old.  The State Hospital, besides a job – holds many memories for me.  My cousins and I used to ride our bikes through the roadways within the property from the ages of 8 to 14.

This morning… I grabbed up my camera and took these pictures:

It is the end of an era.

Today I plan to lay low and recover.  I have a book to read this morning, and a few of us from my book club are going to go to the afternoon showing of One For The Money, based off the book by Janet Evanovich.

Morning Meanderings…. Should the Sniffling and Sneezing be telling me something?

Good morning.

Stuffy head…. sniffling… sneezing…

I feel like a walking ad for some sort of cold and flu commercial.

I don’t get sick often but when I do…. it knocks me down.

I am ready for work…. just Advil’d up to hopefully take the edge of the queasy and moving forward. I have to get a couple of things done for sure today… if this does not pass I will be home early…

One thing I wanted to be sure and share today (not the sickness…. your safe from that ) is a sale my fellow book lovers need to be aware of:

Yup.  And it’s a good sale!  As my head has allowed I have put a couple of things into my cart on their site…. still have not made it all the way through but found a Laura Lipman, and a couple of others so far.  Beware – it’s an addicting site when you can find good titles for $1.99.

I have a review up later and hopefully will be 100% better after today….  😀
