A Black Tie Affair by Sherill Bodine (Giveaway)

Thank you to Hachette Book Group for allowing to give away 5 copies of this book!

Fashion curator Athena Smith will do anything to get her hands on the Clayworth family’s couture collection for her exhibit. So she’s thrilled when she’s called in to authenticate the gowns…until she falls ill while examining them and wakes up face-to-face with notorious Chicago bachelor Drew Clayworth.

Drew doesn’t trust Athena one bit. He still believes she betrayed him years ago. So when his family’s gowns go missing and Athena offers her help in exchange for the dresses, he reluctantly accepts. But they’re both taken off guard by the barely restrained passion that’s still between them…and the memories that are both bitter and sweet. As they work together to find the dresses, can they resist the sparks between them?

The Little Giant of Aberdeen County by Tiffany Baker *Giveaway!

Thank you to Valerie at Hachette Book Group for allowing me a chance to review this book – and to offer a giveaway to my readers!

When Truly Plaice’s mother was pregnant, the town of Aberdeen joined together in betting how record breaking huge the baby boy would ultimately be. The girl who proved to be Truly paid the price of her enormity; her father blamed her for her mother’s death in childbirth, and was totally ill equipped to raise either this giant child or her polar opposite sister Serena Jane, the epitome of femine perfection. When he, too, relinquished his increasingly tenuous grip on life, Truly and Serena Jane are separated–Serena Jane to live a life of privilege as the future May Queen and Truly to live on the outskirts of town on the farm of the town Sadsack, the subject of constant abuse and humiliation at the hands of her peers.

Serena Jane’s beauty proves to be her greatest blessing and her biggest curse, for it makes her the obsession of classmate Bob Bob Morgan, the youngest in a line of Robert Morgans who have been doctors in Aberdeen for generations. Though they have long been the pillars of the community, the earliest Robert Morgan married the town witch, Tabitha Dyerson, and the location of her fabled shadow book–containing mysterious secrets for healing and darker powers–has been the subject of town gossip ever since. Bob Bob Morgan, one of Truly’s biggest tormentors, does the unthinkable to claim the prize of Serena Jane, and changes the destiny of all Aberdeen from there on.

When Serena Jane flees town and a loveless marriage to Bob Bob, it is Truly who must become the woman of a house that she did not choose and mother to her eight-year-old nephew Bobbie. Truly’s brother-in-law is relentless and brutal; he criticizes her physique and the limitations of her health as a result, and degrades her more than any one human could bear. It is only when Truly finds her calling–the ability to heal illness with herbs and naturopathic techniques–hidden within the folds of Robert Morgan’s family quilt, that she begins to regain control over her life and herself. Unearthed family secrets, however, will lead to the kind of betrayal that eventually break the Morgan family apart forever, but Truly’s reckoning with her own demons allows for both an uprooting of Aberdeen County, and the possibility of love in unexpected places.

Yesterday’s mistakes are gone so let them go. You can’t control tomorrow, so stop worrying about it. Today is your opportunity to lose weight, get strong, and look great. It won’t happen overnight, but you can build a new life by changing your actions immediately and I’m here to show you how to make the changes that will create the new lifestyle you dream of: body, mind, and spirit. Best of all, you will start celebrating right away!

Come on, my friend. Let’s get started! By opening this book, I’ll show you how to unlock every tool you need to lose weight and get fit —and stay that way for the rest of your life. Success can be yours, what are you waiting for?

-Chantel

Chantel has written an incredible book.  I have read many books on healthy habits, good food choices, work outs…. you name it – I have probably read something about it. I find enjoyment in learning new and healthy habits and I take away a little bit from each book.  Chantel provided me with more thana little bit of food for thought.

Chantel takes on the role of personal coach to the reader.  An approach I found unique and inspiring.  In the begining of her books she asks that we trust her.  Put your guard down – and dig into this book and make the changes you have dreamed of for a healithier life style.  By “demolitioning” old habits.

I found this book to be wonderfully inspiring.  Chantel has been there, having lost 200 pounds herself.  her dreams of being fit and living a healthy life style have come true and I was impressed with her honest and down to earth writing.  The book is filled with lists of habits to apply and choices to make.  She has included recipes to give you the jump start you may need.  For a book I thought I would just be skimming through the details – I found myself deeply into Chantel’s story and the stories of others who struggled greatly with their weight.  If you are serious  about making a change this year – I would highly recommend you start by picking up a copy of this book.

Chantel Hobbs is a motivational speaker, life coach, personal trainer, marathon runner, wife, and mother of four whose story has been featured on Oprah, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox & Friends, the 700 Club, and the covers of People and First magazines. She appears weekly on two fitness-themed radio programs and promotes her One-Day Way Learning System on television. Visit Chantel at ChantelHobbs.com for fitness updates and coaching tips.

Oh and one more thing….. I have an extra copy of this book to give away!

To enter this giveaway leave a comment here and let me know what your kryptonite food is.  You know the food item that you just have trouble saying no to.  The item that like krytonite is to Super Man, makes you week in the  knees you must answer this to be entered.  (I will start, mine is pretty much anything chocolate)!

December Recap and Monthly Winners!

December was the first month that I used a Google Spreadsheet to track comments and offer a f ull month giveaway.  I really enjoyed using the spreadsheet and I am excited to announce not only the winners of the December Comment Contest – but also some fun statistics of this blog.

When I started blogging I didn’t know about other book bloggers.  I blogged what I considered to be a personal record of what I had read and if someone found my blog and commented – that was just a bonus.  All book reviews I completed at that time were from my own bookshelves.  I had no idea you could connect with publishers and authors that actually wanted peopel to read and review their books.  Before discovering Book Blogs and learning how to promote my blog, I averaged about 400 hits a month.

In June of 2009, a person commented on my blog and I went to see where they came from and I seen they were a member of something called Book Blogs.  That’s the story… from that point on I signed up… found the world – this world, of bloggers, people like me who loved books!  In a nut shell… I haven’t looked back!

In December, I had 12,385 visits to my blog.  I had over 1,300 comments (this of course does not count my own).  I am still so amazed that people are reading what I write… and so thankful again to have met so many wonderful book friends!

Two of my top posts for December were:

Morning Meanderings (The one where I showed pictures of the new shelves)

and

Pondering Moments (the discussion on how I read so many books)

40 Loaves by c.d. baker with Giveaway!

A refreshingly different devotional that left me hungry for more and hopeful that there are 40 more loaves in the oven…  ~ Sheila

“Why don’t I have more faith?”
“Why am I so bored with Jesus?”
“Why are Christians so hard for me to like?”

There are many questions we’re not supposed to ask when playing by the religious rules. It makes people uncomfortable. So why is it that Jesus invited questions and even asked some of them himself? What is it that you’re afraid to ask God? It’s a risky prospect to begin asking–but far riskier to continue simply trying to get by without knowing. Author C. D. Baker asked himself 40 soul-searching questions which started a conversation in his heart and ultimately showed him more about God than He ever expected.

Can we become more honest with who we really are and find who God says He really is at the same time? Come indulge yourself in daily readings with an honest exploration of your secret fears and thoughts, and know that you will always be welcomed in God’s unconditional love.

Search me, O God … and know my anxious thoughts.

–Psalm 139:23 NIV

This is the kind of book that you want break into the bread of each day to find insights to great questions such as they are listed above as well as others.  Chapter after chapter c. d. baker offers up a fresh topic – 40 actually.  These topics are thought provoking and each chapter ends with a little food for thought as well a prayer that either came out of the Bible, or many times a prayer from another author which I really enjoyed.

The book is not overly preachy, instead peppered with modern stories, each chapter leads you through a question and some thoughts to take away.   Written in short 4 page chapters, this is something that you could read through while you have your morning coffee.  Each chapter asking the questions that we feel we shouldn’t be asking… but are so glad that someone did.  I think this book could be given to anyone at any level of Faith and they would find understanding within the pages.

This book should be read in 40 days.  I would recommend taking a chapter a day to breathe in the aroma of God’s words and really take those words to heart as you go through the 40 days, hopefully coming out the other side with a fresh perspective.  Even if you think daily devotional type books are not your thing, I think you would find this book to be different and interesting.  I plan on going through this book again starting the first of the year and doing just that.

Want to win this book?

Leave a comment here with your favorite kind of bread (I know… random right?) *you must answer the question to get in the giveaway!
