Morning Meanderings… TITANIC Happenings!

Good morning and HAPPY THURSDAY!!!!  (Yes, I have had coffee, why do you ask?)

There is a big event coming up that I have yet to really talk about here but have wanted to.  It is the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, April 15, 1912.

Remember when they came out with the movie with Leonardo and Kate?  Well I have a story…

Sheila, don’t you have a story for EVERYTHING?

No… No I don’t for instance… I have no stories about frogs.  Oh… wait, that’s not true… I do, and it’s a sad one…

Ok…. ummmm…. Unicorns!  I have no stories about unicorns. 😛  See?  Not everything has a story…

BUT – this one does.

So it’s 1997, I think.  I am working at Wal-Mart (yes, yes,…. I was that cool!) and my friends were talking about going to the movie Titanic.  AND no way was I going to see a movie about a ship that sank a long time ago.  And I am pretty sure I said so in so many words.

NOPE.  Not gonna happen.

But, as seems to happen to me often, the chatter, the discussion around the movie, the excitement,  peaked my interest and I went with Hubby one night and …

LOVED IT. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Seriously, from the moment she is being lowered off the ship in the life boat and jumps back on the ship, I had to go to the bathroom sooooooo bad but refused to miss a moment.  (I may have injured my bladder during that movie, just saying!) AND I had cried so much I actually left the theater with a headache.

I went on to see the movie another 5 times in the theater.  And yes I know, it is over 3 hours long and yes, I know I probably should not tell people how many times I went to it.  But, its out there now, and I know that over 18 hours of my life in the 90’s was spent in a small town movie theater watching Titanic.   😯 I kept going, because I became an evangelist for the movie (oh you know the type….. talking it up, persuading you to go, offering to go with you even….) I brought people to the theater.  I sat with groups as small as 3, and as large as 12 (*waves to co-workers and assistant manager who said she would NEVER waste her time on the movie… and then did.  With me. )

At that point I became obsessed with knowing more about Titanic.  I read books (don’t, be shocked… occasionally I do read), I watched movies, and I found my way a few years later to the Titanic exhibit when it was in Florida – which was amazing and heartbreaking all together.

Now that you have the back story – here is modern day, today in fact…. now in fact… and here is what is happening that I know about.

My friend Reagan (if you have not met her you must, she is a hoot), is having a challenge:

"Miss Remmers Reviews", "Titanic"

Stop over and check it out.  It’s completely doable and you may learn something about Titanic in the process.

AND

Kelly At The Written Word and I have been conversing about her upcoming Titanic week and we are working out a thing… details to come, but in the meantime here is the link to what she has going on:

Titanic 3D hits the theaters tomorrow, April 6th.  I am not excited about the 3D part… in fact, I think that might just irritate me a bit just because of the subject matter and while it is a fictitious movie, it is based on actual events.  However, after watching the trailer this morning and tearing up… I will be going to see Titanic in the theater again because it still affects me so much I am surprised.  I guess I could then count that as 7 times I seen it in the theater….

If you know of any other Titanic happenings please let me know here, and I can add them to this post.

How about you, did you see the movie it the Theater?  Would you go see it again, why or why not?

  1. I saw it in the theater, and then on DVD. Not as many times as you did, though..lol

(I’m the one who saw The Help three or four times in the theater and several times already on DVD.)

But I guess I’ll have to see this one. Sense the reluctance? Well, first I’ll have to invest in lots of Kleenex…and then, no water must be consumed during the movie, as I have that same issue with the bladder during LONG movies. LOL

  2. I saw Titanic in the theater at the mall with hubby. We didn’t see it when it first came out and wanted to see what the fuss was about. I LOVED it. Hubby thought it was just ok. It takes a lot to get him excited and I always tell him he has a flat affect 🙂

I do have a story. Before we saw the movie, we were in India visiting my in-laws. I was sleeping due to jet lag. Suddenly hubby bursts in the room and wakes me up, saying the movie is on TV. I told him it was impossible b/c it was still out in the theaters. There was NO WAY it was on DVD(unless it was a bootleg copy — not interested) much less TV — in India. But he insisted and I dragged myself out of bed.

It turned out to be an old Titanic movie in b/w. hubby gave me this guilty, apologetic look and said he was just so excited and didn’t want me to miss out.

I trudged back to bed but couldn’t fall back asleep.

    Sorry to ramble.

  3. I’m reading a Titanic book right now and parts of it are coming to life for me since I was in Belfast last year.

I did see the movie in the theater and didn’t like it so won’t see it again. The ship actually sunk faster than it took to watch the movie.

  4. Ah… what a great story!!! (sorry about the frog!! I have one of THOSE, too!)

My husband & I had a whirlwind of dates before getting married scant weeks after we met (much to my dear mother’s hair-pulling) but I will never forget (despite remembering very little of anything) that he took me to see Titanic in the theater. It was the first time I kept a secret, too… that I had been to see it already!

THANKS for the links to everything. I know we are looking forward to the documentary on making the movie among other tributes. 3-D gives me headaches so far, but I might have to test that theory again.

  5. We didn’t see it in the theater, but saw it on ppv and loved it so much we bought it on dvd and have watched it over and over. I think my hubby liked it more than I did.

We haven’t been to see the Titanic exhibit in Orlando yet, (why, I’m not sure since it’s only an hr. drive from our house), but we’re going to Disney later this year for a week or so and plan on going. I’m also getting ready to read Titanic 2012 for a book tour.

    1. We own it too Vicki although I think I have only watched it a couple of times at home… its hard not to get distracted at home when watching a LONG movie 😀

I hope you go see the exhibit, it really touched me.

  6. I saw this in the theater three times and plan on going now too! I live in Orlando and haven’t even heard about the Titanic exhibit but once!! I need to go see it. I actually got a review book about the Titanic recently that I did not request so I wasn’t going to read it but maybe I should!

    1. Jenna – yes see the exhibit! And ooh, you should have taken the book! See if you still can! I think it is the one I was asked to review too and the world Titanic was all I needed to say “YES!” 😀

  7. I love your stories! Never stop telling them to us! I would go see this one in 3D..the whole story of the Titanic fascinates me!

  8. I love your stories and never tire of them…so please keep telling them to us. I am fascinated by the Titanic and would possibly go see this one in 3D.

  9. Good story! I’m not planning to go see it–my husband and I saw it right after it opened, and we loved the background events, but not the romance.

    1. I would say that the whole ship and what happened played a more important role for me than the Kate Leonardo angle, although, as usual, my root for the underdog came in to play when Leonardo “Jack” came from such a hard life of nothing and was making the best of it.

  10. Loved the movie! Plan on seeing it again in theaters in the next week! Watch it whenever it comes on tv – regardless of how far into the movie it is when I find it! I have a couple of books on Titantic that I am scheduled to read this month as well.
