Weekend Cooking – Chicago Dogs for the July 4th Weekend

Minnesota has taken a turn for the HOT and I am so glad that summer is really here!   😀

Recently when I was in Chicago I experienced my first REAL Chicago Dog.  (When in Rome…)   I wanted it with the works and that is what I got.  Now I am no big hot dog fan, but after tasting this explosion on the taste buds, I realize it is because I had never experienced the Chicago Dog.

Chicago Dog - purchased and eaten on the Navy Pier

All that said…. is your mouth-watering yet?  I thought this would be a fun weekend treat.  The Fourth of July is all about grilling anyway… and what fun to dress up the standard hotdogs?

So here is how to make a Chicago Dog

All Beef Hot Dogs

Poppy Seed Buns (I could not find these so used a bakery wheat bun that was YUM)

tomatoes, sliced

onion, chopped

relish

pickle spears

sports peppers (I substituted banana peppers)

Celery salt

Mustard – Never Ketchup!

Grill up those tasty hot dogs.  While they are grilling, wrap the buns in foil and warm them either in the oven or on the grill, being careful not to toast them, just warm.

When dogs are done – place a pickle spear in each bun.  Place dog on top and load with the other toppings.  Sprinkle celery salt over all and add mustard.

Mouth watering delicious!!!!

The ones I made were fully loaded 🙂 I needed a bigger bun.

  1. I’ve never had a Chicago Dog, but do love hot dogs once in a while. I usually put chili, hot dog sauce, sauerkraut or cole slaw on them, but that does look good so I’m copying the recipe.

Oh, and I’ve tried fried pickles at Chili’s and they are amazing!
    Here’s my WC

  2. Mmmm, yum. It’s the only way I eat a hot dog. And most important step is NEVER add ketchup! And gotta have the pickle. But of course I would, I’m from Chicaaaaago. 🙂

  3. I love Chicago Dogs, it’s my favorite way to eat a hot dog. The only other way I love them is taking mustard, ketchup, and mayo. Put crumbled potato chips on top of that a put shredded mozzarella on top of that. This is after it’s in the bun of course, then put the whole thing on a two sided grill pan/machine and put the top down for a minute to just melt and slightly burn (for me) the cheese. It’s so good.

  4. Awesome!! We never, ever use ketchup on our hot dogs. Only good mustard. I might have everything here to make these over the weekend.

  5. If I ever make it back to the US I am going to make an effort to have one of these everything in hot dogs, just for the experience. I am not sure if I will like it or not based on the description.
