I know right?  SUN.  And SUN.  And SUN.  Did I mention SUN?  Sorry it seems like it has been forever since we have had sunny days and I am grinning ear to ear.

I listen to three audio books at once.  I have one going in my bathroom bedroom (Their Eyes Are Watching God…. currently they are running from the floods…), one in my kitchen (The Zookeeper’s Wife (a man just parachuted out of the sky…), and one in my car (Change Of Altitude (Margaret is with a small group of friends hiking up a dangerous mountain)…

I don’t know how they all stay straight in my head – but they do and I listen to all three at least a little bit each day.  When I get up I flip the one on in the bathroom and while I get read y for my day I get in a good 20+ minutes… then when I am in the kitchen making COFFEE, cleaning up or working on dinner, that audio can get in around 20-30 minutes a day… the one in my car is on whenever I am driving alone which is most of the time so about 10-30 minutes car time a day as well.

And like I said – that works for me and I look forward to each story line….

Until…

Yesterday I am coming home from work listening to Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve.  I have commented that there was A LOT of pre story before it seemed like it was ever going to get into the heart of the story and then as I pulled into the grocery store parking lot… it happened.  I could tell the book was getting to the point  and I reluctantly shut my car off ran and picked up the things I needed and hurried back to my car…. driving home my ears were glued to what was happening….  once home…

I sat in the car in my garage, listening to the audio.

After 20 minutes of that …. I decided I looked ridiculous and popped the audio out of the car, went into the house… plucked out The Zoo Keepers Wife from the kitchen CD player and put in Change Of Altitude to listen to while I prepped my salad for the potluck I attended last night.

Change of Altitude… trumped Zoo Keepers Daughter.

It happens.

Certainly those of you who read more than one book at once can relate…. if one takes off in the story line, it gets more attention at least for a time while you dive in.

Yes… I will go back to Zookeepers Daughter, in fact this morning I had.  Change of Altitude followed me from the house to the potluck and home again and while the story line still is holding my captive… I am back to listening to the three again in harmony…

😛

Hope your day is super fab! I work… I hope to play a bit on my bike… I will probably start on the front lawn again tonight as yup…. with all the rain I could mow again.  😀

I put the question to you…. do you read multiple books at the same time (different genres…) and or audio – or a mix of both?

  1. Yes, I read multiple books of varying genres at the same time. The one I pick up at any one time depends on:

    . My mood
. Where I am in the story — like you, if the story is taking off in one of the books, that one takes priority
. Library book vs book for review(Goodreads FirstReads or LibraryThing Early Reviewer/Member Giveaway) vs own copy. Books I own tend to sit for a while before I get to them.

    1. I need the varying genres too Mona… then when one gets to heavy I can move to something lighter – somehow though all my audios are currently kind of heavy, I guess the Anita Shreve one is the lightest of the three….. 😀

  2. I usually don’t have more than one audiobook going on, right now it’s Jo Nesbø’s The Snowman. But I can have multiple reading-books:-)

    1. I just seen the Snowman in the last couple of days on line… hope it is good! I multi task with the books too…. same thing, different genres except I do not get to all the books in the same day like I do the audio 😀

    1. I cant sit and listen to audio…. that would knock me out… but I can listen to them while doing house work, etc…. of course my house is quiet so I have no distractions other than the audio…. I do not have it on when Al is in the house as I can not chat with him and listen… that would be a mess 😀

  3. I always have been a one book at a time girl… until I found you. (that sounds like a song..until yoooouuu)
but uh, I recently found audio.com and have downloaded a couple books on my mp3 player. I can listen while I walk, etc. So, now….I am a 2 book at a time girl. Sometimes 3 if I have to hurry and get a book in for book club.
    Have a great day!

  4. That very reason is a big part of why I don’t read more than 1 book at a time; one always trumps another, and then I’m not really reading more than 1 at a time, anyway!

      1. Hm, I wonder why the audios don’t act that way for you … is part of it the hassle of moving from one station/location to the next? And losing your place if you take it out of the player?

        1. I think so Hannah… and with audio I can turn it on and go about my business and feel like I am quickly back int he story… I think I am more patient with audio because I can do something else while listening – with books…. its me and the book and we better connect fast as I have things to do 😛

  5. I can only read one book at a time and I don’t have anything to play audio books on so when I drive I enjoy peace and quiet. I simply cannot keep more than one book straight.

  6. I have read more than one book at a time…there was usually one (a smaller one) to carry when I was out and about; another small one at bedtime; and larger ones for the cozy couch.

But I don’t think I could LISTEN to more than one at a time, my being primarily “visual” and all.

I can relate to one story grabbing you and not being able to do anything else, though.

    Enjoy!

  7. the only place i can listen to audio is in the car and that presents 2 problems 1)kids with me control the radio and 2) there never seems to be a good stopping point and then i end up sitting in the car waiting to get to a stopping point!
i can handle 2 books plus a devotional…other than that i get lost

  8. One book in audio, one book in print. I listen to music at the gym because I’ve found that if I listen to books, I slow down in my walking. Get involved with the story, you know? However, I rode the bike today and decided I could listen to a podcast – that worked great!

I’m in awe that you can keep up with 3 at once and then there’s the ones you read in print. Wow.

  9. I always have two audios going – I alternate discs until one grabs me and won’t let go. 🙂 I have A Change in Altitude in print – wish my library had it on audio!

And, I read a few books at a time -as long as they’re all different genres.

  10. Wow. I don’t listen to CDs, because I usually don’t stay in one room long enough. I download to my iPod…which is missing at the moment…along with my audio of Let The Great World Spin.

Have to track that sucker down before my commute into the the city next week! With no traffic it takes me 1 hour and 10 minutes to get into midtown from my house…morning traffic? 2.5 hours. easy. UGH. It will be WORTH EVERY MINUTE!!

    1. Oh yes – you will need to find your IPOD for the trip! I thought my cd player int he jeep was going out and seriously – I would have to drive something else to the cities on Sunday if I had no audio all the way 😀

  11. I don’t know how you readers do it, I have tried and a book always gets more of my attention and then I just stick to that one until the end. I am a 1 book girl. I loved how it gripped you though 🙂

  12. You stole our sunshine…HA! We have clouds and sprinkles out here in California. Normal for this time of year would be 80 degrees and sunny. Enjoy the sunshine as your long winters entitle you to many, many days of sunshine to make up for it!

  13. I totally envy that you can do this…I wish I could. I am a one book at a time kind of reader. I have to be fully engaged in only one thing at a time…my flaw…

  14. I generally read one adult book at a time. I do usually have a middle grade fiction book going with my son as well. Those usually last a few weeks since we only read an average of a chapter a night. But for my own reading, I rarely have two books going. If I do, it’s one fiction and one nonfiction. That’s as much as I can handle! LOL!

  15. Sometimes, I can do an audio with a print book going, but otherwise it’s one book only for me! I haven’t been able to get into audio this year. I only listen to audio on my MP3 player when I’m walking and with cold weather and now the bum knee I haven’t been out much. Soon I hope!

  16. By the way, I read Zookeeper’s Wife last year and I thought it was very interesting when it talked about reverse or backward breeding to get back to the pure strain. Maybe you’re not there yet…

    1. I dont remember that part Angie… interesting. It is a deeper listen then I thought it would be which can be unfortunate in audio as I am usually multi tasking while listening and it is easier for me to miss something.

  17. Read more than one book at a time? Doesn’t everybody??? I currently have an audio book in the car, a book on my mp3 player that I listen to while exercising or cleaning, a book on my I-touch that I listen to while sewing, a book on my nook (I can read it while brushing my teeth and drying my hair) and an actual book on my nightstand. Plus two or three other actual books that I’m reading. I don’t have trouble keeping the plots straight, but I’m like you and sometimes one book just has to be read/listened to until it’s finished.

  18. I can do multiple books at once, but not audio…the only time I listen to audio is in the car. I’m not organized enough to have a different audio in every room of the house. 😀
Also, you have sun because we have rain…very unusual out here at this time of year, but I figured hey, it’s the least I could do for my friends in the frozen tundra. 😀

  19. I definitely read at least one regular book and one audiobook at a time and if they are the same genre, I seem to be able to keep them straight!

  20. I do read multiple books but I try and do a mix up with the genres.. Am still getting used to audio books so it is either my kindle or hard copies one in every room 🙂

PS: I just got my hands on the ROOM cant wait to read it after your awesome recommendation.

  21. Here you go, Sheila….I’m currently reading The King’s Daughter (historical fict.), A Game of Thrones (fantasy), John Adams (biography), The Crimson Petal and the White (historical), and listening to The Hobbit (fantasy) on audio. I never seem to have any problem keeping the stories straight in my head. Luckily, because I have A LOT of reading to do and this is the only way I can do it. 🙂
