The Bible Salesman by Clyde Edgerton GIVEAWAY!!!

Valerie at Hachette Book Group has graciously offered this book for me to review and do a giveaway for!

This giveaway is closed as of Oct 28

bible salesmanPreston Clearwater has been a criminal since stealing two chain saws and 1,600 pairs of aviator sunglasses from the army during the Second World War. Back on the road in postwar North Carolina, now a member of a car-theft ring, he picks up hitchhiking Henry Dampier, an innocent twenty-year-old Bible salesman. Clearwater immediately recognizes Henry as smart but gullible, just the associate he needs–one who will believe Clearwater is working undercover for the F.B.I.; one who will drive the cars Clearwater steals as Clearwater follows along in his own car at a safe distance. Henry joyfully sees a chance to lead a dual life as a Bible salesman and a G-man.

During his hilarious and scary adventures, Henry grapples with doubts about the Bible’s accuracy, and we learn of his fundamentalist upbringing, an upbringing that doesn’t prepared him for his new life. As he falls in love with the captivating Marleen Green and questions his religious training, Henry begins to see he’s being used–that he is on his own in a way he never imagined.

I sold Camp Fire Girls candy door to door when I was a kid. I sold a lot, although way too much of it was to my own family :-).

  3. I sold chocolate bars door-to-door for school fundraisers as a child! I’m sure I’ll get to start helping my kids with that soon.

  4. We sold boxes of candy back in the day as Camp Fire girls. Everyone always staked out the nearby apartment building.

  5. I commented on the 10/3 Morning Meandering!
Thanks for the extra chances to win.

  6. I have never sold anything door to door, but did collect for UNICEF when I was a kid and it wasn’t fun for me. Too shy and hate rejection. I’d love to read this one. Please include me in the drawing

  7. Please include me in the contest. Book sounds interesting!
I’ve never sold anything door to door….but if I would, maybe handmade knit items I make myself.
I just happened upon your blog, but I will be a follower from now on!
Thanks for the chance to win!

  8. When I was a kid Girl Scout cookies were sold door to door, and I sold a lot of them. Thanks for the giveaway.

    1. Hi Ellie – Girl Scout Cookies! What a blast from the past! Do they even do door to door any more? My friend just sends out a group email when the cookies are for sale and we email back what we want. Times they are a changing…. LOL

  9. As a child I sold cookies (for Girl Guides, equivalent to the US Girl Scouts) door to door. I also sold chocolate too once. Please accept this as my entry. Thank you!

  10. I have never sold anything door to door. As a child, I did sell things for fundraisers, but only to family members/family friends (my parents were way overprotective). I tried selling Mary Kay as an adult. I was too shy to approach strangers about a makeover and I felt bad taking money from family and friends. I am a terrible salesperson.

Please include me in the giveaway.

    1. HI heatherzilla – I think it todays world that is the norm… not a whole lot of door to door any more. Isnt it amazing how quickly things have changed? And maybe amazing isnt the right word…. but scary may be.

  11. I have sold candy, sausage, and cookies as a child for club fundraisers. As an adult I used to sell catalog items for a large department store years a go. Thank you for entering me, the book sounds like a good entertaining read.

  12. I sold magazines, candy, yearbook ads, etc. when I was in school. Sold some pizza kits and gift wrap for my kids when they were in school. Don’t think I’d do very well trying to sell anything now.

Please enter me in your contest.

  13. When I was a kid, I sold candy bars for school fundraising, but that’s it. I don’t think I’d be good at selling ANYTHING door to door because I really hate selling. Period. And I’d most likely starve if America functioned on the barter system! I’d love to read this book, tho. Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

  14. Could have sworn I entered this, but I don’t see my entry. I really want to read this book. Enough that I will certainly buy it if I don’t pick it up in a giveaway. Thanks for hosting!

  15. As a child I remember selling cards and chocolate bars door to door. I hated it. I can’t think of anything that I would be good selling door to door, or that I would even like to sell door to door as an adult.
