  1. I’ve read Lysistrata by Aristophanes. (My mom read Little Red Riding Hood to me as a child, but since she was the one doing the reading, I the listening, I guess that one doesn’t count. 😉 )

  2. Good thing you’re limiting it to three! Turns out I’ve read more than I thought!
We’ll start with The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

  3. I just read Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I liked the book. Tom’s a little selfish but he is definately a very adventurous kid. I like his escapades and what he thinks and how he handles situations. I also like the glimpses into what life was like back then. This book has a few horror scenes but all in all it’s light and humorous, and made me laugh several times.
And I don’t have a blog so my review is here.

  4. I’ve read the whole Harry Potter series, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. I Probably read some others as well, but that all I can think of.

+5 SPOILER WARNINGS for Harry Potter and The Order of Phoenix! (I don’t have a blog) I read the fifth Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and The Order of Phoenix, yesterday. This is my favorite Harry potter book because in this book, Harry insists that Voldermort is back, putting up with harsh punishments, and the disgusted whispers of all those who don’t believe him. I also like this book because Sirius is in it a LOT and I really like him (even though he dies in this book). I also like the battle at ministry the end (even though it was really sad and I cried again).

(SPOILER WARNINGS for Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson) Is anyone else skeptical that Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson is on the list? I mean, I know the girl dies at the end, but it’s more sad than scary. I read this when I was like eight, and yeah I was upset when she died, and cried, but still. I think parents are underestimating the strength of their children with some of the books that are being banned.

  5. Wow, that’s really interesting. I remember seeing a list of banned books in my favourite second-hand bookstore once and having a read. My friend and I could not stop laughing. Some of them sounded fair enough (one was “The Pop-up Book of Human Anatomy” or something like that), but so many were just normal books – even kids’ books we’d read and loved, and couldn’t even understand why ANYone would want to ban them. Books like “The Witches” by Roald Dahl. It’s so ridiculous.

    That’s a really interesting list, though. Eye-opening!

Entry – I’ve read “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle (and re-read. And re-read. And bought. And…) (Did you know there are five books in the series? I always thought there were only four. Haven’t read the fifth yet. The rest of the series seemed to get progressively…less good… though. Sad.)

  6. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (I can understand why that one got banned. Wait, no, I’m thinking about 1984 by Orwell. 1984 was more frightening to me. I do understand why Brave New World was banned, though – especially with the ending. I actually didn’t like the book at all.)

(But I still think banning it is ridiculous.)

  7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

Ha! I would ban the Sorcerer’s Stone, though. I support that. Bring back the original Philosopher’s Stone title! (OK, I suspect that wasn’t the reason it was banned. But it SHOULD have been.)

A lot of these books are on my TBR list – e.g. Catch 22, Bridge to Terabithia, etc.

I can understand why books like “Daddy’s roommate” would get banned, too. Again, don’t agree with it – but it would be like publishing a (graphic) sex education book 100 years ago, or a story about a multiracial couple 200 years ago (??), or something similar. Challenging popular prejudices will NEVER be… well, popular.

Other note: Silas Marner – what a nice book. I assume it was banned for not representing typical family values or something, but it’s such a good, well-written book. OK, maybe not “nice”. But definitely sad that it was ever banned.

      1. I’ve listened to the Jim Dale audio before. This time I am listening to the UK version by Stephen Fry. I can’t decide who I like more, they’re both so good!

  8. I’ve read a couple- Handmaid’s Tale, Brave New World, Of Mice and Men, Huckleberry Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird. Great contest and great post!

  9. LOL.. I have read a TON of books that have been banned. I love the video!

Thank you! Yes, I LOVE decorating my blog up! I have had a hard time finding the PERFECT layout and now I have it. Squeeeee!!

      1. Your welcome Sheila! I have been such a bad blogging friend lately and haven’t been following up on the blogs lately. Oops. I am baaaccckkkk. LOL! P.S. Don’t enter me in the contest, I loved the video and had to comment!

  10. Hi, Sheila! I’m not sure if your contest includes participants from the Philippines. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I’ve read Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials trilogy. They’re very satisfying reads.
