Giveaway for Beat The Reaper by Josh Bazell

Another great giveaway thanks to Valerie at Hachette Book Group.  I am able to offer here a chance to win a copy of  Beat The Reaper to two lucky readers.

Giveaway is now closed as of Oct 28, 2009

Full Description

Dr. Peter Brown is an intern at Manhattan’s worst hospital, with a talent for medicine, a shift from hell, and a past he’d prefer to keep hidden. Whether it’s a blocked circumflex artery or a plan to land a massive malpractice suit, he knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men.BeattheReaper_bluePietro “Bearclaw” Brnwna is a hitman for the mob, with a genius for violence, a well-earned fear of sharks, and an overly close relationship with the Federal Witness Relocation Program. More likely to leave a trail of dead gangsters than a molecule of evidence, he’s the last person you want to see in your hospital room.

Nicholas LoBrutto, aka Eddy Squillante, is Dr. Brown’s new patient, with three months to live and a very strange idea: that Peter Brown and Pietro Brnwa might-just might-be the same person …

Now, with the mob, the government, and death itself descending on the hospital, Peter has to buy time and do whatever it takes to keep his patients, himself, and his last shot at redemption alive. To get through the next eight hours-and somehow beat the reaper.

Spattered in adrenaline-fueled action and bone-saw-sharp dialogue, BEAT THE REAPER is a debut thriller so utterly original you won’t be able to guess what happens next, and so shockingly entertaining you won’t be able to put it down.

Here is the book trailer…

the historianThe Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

Breathtakingly suspenseful and beautifully written, The Historian is the story of a young woman plunged into a labyrinth where the secrets of her family’s past connect to an inconceivable evil: the dark fifteenth-century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages. The search for the truth becomes an adventure of monumental proportions, taking us from monasteries and dusty libraries to the capitals of Eastern Europe – in a feat of storytelling so rich, so hypnotic, so exciting that it has enthralled readers around the world.

“Never was a ghost story so casually erudite, nor a historical travelogue such gripping entertainment.” —New York Magazine

“Impossible to resist. . . . Kostova blends fact and fantasy to remind us that the original Dracula legend is rooted in monstrous acts of unblinking evil.” —Miami Herald

“A richly told story about family and the dark side of human nature. . . . This cry of the heart will appeal to readers beyond those who are drawn by a fascination with the legend of Dracula.” —Chicago Tribune

“Genuinely terrifying.” —Boston Globe

The Sister Pact by Cami Checkett w/ Giveaway!

I savored every word as the characters unfolded before me and became a part of my heart….

~ Sheila

TheSisterPactSavannah Compton is devastated when her sister and best friend Allison falls into a coma after a tragic accident. Or was it an accident? Even with a charming and handsome detective at her side, it seems Savannah may never discover the truth. But if she doesn’t, her family could be in even more danger. And Savannah’s past holds its own secrets that could change everything.

Now she must prove her innocence to the one person who is beginning to matter most. Join Savannah as she struggles to summon hope and rely on faith, even in the darkest of circumstances, and learn how the bond between sisters can overcome anything.

My Thoughts:  I love how this book came to be in my hands.  Author Cami Checketts came to me and asked if I would like to review her book.  I looked it up on line, read the same few paragraphs as you just did above, and said yes.

Upon reading this book – I was so thankful that I did say yes to it.  Cami writes a great suspense novel with characters that will stay with me a long time.  I was really impressed that this is such a clean novel and what I mean by that is – there is no strong language, no graphic scenes that made me squirm and no sexual content.

The characters are well described and I as the book opened its story to me I felt as though I knew Allison and Savvanah.  Or – at least  wanted to.  The bond they carried as sisters and friends really tore at my heart and reminded me of the sister I once had.  I loved how they took care of one another, and when Detective Noah is added – well, it only gets better.

This novel is filled with suspense, romance, and a close up look of what happend to a family when tragedy hits close to home.

Cami Checkett writes in a style that if I were to ever write that book that I hope to, I would be honored to write as well as her.  I will definitely be looking for more from Cami Checkett.

A portion of the proceeds from The Sister Pact will be donated to The Child & Family Support Center. For more information on this worthy cause, please go to www.cachecfsc.org

You Were Born For This by Bruce Wilkinson w/ Giveaway!

Reading this book – I ask myself, how many miracles sent my way do I miss?  How many opportunities have I missed when  I felt a need to say something and didn’t?  ‘You Were Born For This’ was a great reminder.  ~  Sheila

Summary

His New York Times phenomenon The Prayer of Jabez changed how millions pray. Now Bruce Wilkinson wants to change what they do next.

Anyone can do a good deed, but some good works can only happen by a direct intervention from God. Around the world these acts are called miracles—not that even religious people expect to see one any time soon. But what would happen if millions of ordinary people walked out each morning expecting God to deliver a miracle through them to a person in need? You Were Born for This starts with the dramatic premise that everyone at all times is in need of a miracle, and that God is ready to meet those needs supernaturally through ordinary people who are willing to learn the “protocol of heaven.”

In the straightforward, story-driven, highly motivating style for which he is known, Wilkinson describes how anyone can be a “Delivery Guy” from heaven in such universally significant arenas of life as finances, practical help, relationships, purpose, and spiritual growth.

Author Bios:

One of the world’s foremost Christian teachers, Bruce Wilkinson is best known as the author of the New York Times #1 bestseller The Prayer of Jabez. He is also the author of numerous other bestsellers, including A Life God Rewards, Secrets of the Vine, and The Dream Giver. Over the past three decades, Wilkinson has founded several global initiatives, including organizations that recruited and trained thousands of Americans to address hunger, AIDS, and poverty in Africa. Bruce and his wife, Darlene, have three children and six grandchildren. They live outside Atlanta.

David Kopp has collaborated with Bruce Wilkinson on over a dozen bestselling books, including The Prayer of Jabez. He is an editor and writer living in Colorado.

My Thoughts:

Many years ago I had read The Prayer of Jabez and really liked how Wilkinson put things into perspective.  Now here I

am again with another amazing book by Wilkinson sitting next to me as I type.  While what Bruce is saying is to me – common sense… apparently it needs to be said as I for one tend to forget that we are to be constantly looking for ways to serve Him… ways to do His work here on earth and yet days go by where I dont go the extra few steps to talk to that neighbor out watering her flowers or the person I know is going to want to talk and talk and I just do not have (or take) the time to listen.  *OUCH!*

There are topics in this book that I can and will use for my team training I am currently doing for our Fall Honduras Mission.  I love the term “Intentional Miracle Workers.”  This book really was a great read for me and a definite keeper for the book shelves.  This is one I can refer to time and again.

And YES!  Thank you to Staci for also sending me an extra copy to giveaway!  To enter this giveaway:

One entry for answering this question:  What can you do to be more open to miracles that are around us everyday?

receive a second entry by becoming a follow of this blog (two entries if you already are a follower but you need to tell me)

earn another entry by blogging or tweeting this giveaway.

That’s it.  Giveaway will close October 17

This book was sent to me for review by Staci Carmichael from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group

BBAW Giveaway – Here We Go Again!!!

BBAW_Celebrate_BooksI keep posting giveaways as I have time and so as long as I have a bit before I need to fly out the door again…. thought I would post another!

This time I am looking for the titles and Authors of any one of the top ten books of 2008 according to the New York Times.  Just one of the books.

I will take three winners here – a different winner for each correct title. The winners will receive choice out of the gift box.

Have fun!!!!gift

(*Please remember these giveaways are open to US entrants only and can not be delivered to PO box numbers)  ** Note that the comment giveaway at the end of BBAW where you can win an Amazon gift card is open worldwide – so while the individual giveaways are USA only – the overall comment giveaway is worldwide!  :)

BBAW – yes! Another Giveaway!

BBAW_Celebrate_Books

Ok…I wont even try to shoot for one correct answer here as I am sure there are many…. so what I am looking for this time is a link to what you find to be the Worlds largest Book…..  again – I am not putting in guidelines…. put a great link in the comments to what you believe to be the worlds largest book and you will be one of my winners!

One of the winners?  Yup – in this final day of BBAW I am going to look for 3 winners this time…. you can not however use the same link to the same book as another winner has.  I need three separate books here.  (There is no right or wrong answer – I am just looking for three links to 3 EXTREMELY large books)  A different winner per book – the same person on this one can not win the 2nd or third spot as well)

I thought this would be kind of cool to see what links come in to see what are considered to be the Worlds Largest Books!  Winners will be announced on here and will get a chance to pick out of the gift box!

Ready?  Set?  And Go!!! gift
