Thank you to Bookworming in the 21st Century

thank you

Kristen at Bookworming in the 21st Century, put out a Twitter last week looking for newer book bloggers to interview on her blog.  I responded and asked if I would qualify with 7 weeks in.  I did.

Today, Kristen featured my interview and I am just thrilled with how great it looks.  Thank you Kristen truly!

Kristens Blog has great reviews and features.  Take time to stop by and see for yourself.

Fairy Hunters Ink by Sheila A Dane

fainry inc

When I sign up to review a childrens read I am often surprised by what I get out of the book… in Fairy Hunters Ink I am reminded of the magic that is always around us – no matter what our age! ~ Sheila

Have you ever wondered why your child’s clothes, or

even your own, always end up on the closet floor?  Or why your socks go missing from

your laundry? Or why ants inevitably show up at your picnics?

fairy-hunters-ink-pauls-cover-front-only_0001-231x300When I was Young, not very Young, but just Young Enough
and not too Old, I was given a Book, which had
photographs of places in the woods where fairies lived. I
spent many hours in the forest looking for fairies, dragging my Book with
me so that I could be sure I had the right plants. (My Book got very
ragged, but it was for a good cause, as you shall see). I fairy9found Jack in the
Pulpits, ferns, and running cedar, soft mosses and tall grasses and many
kinds of flowers. My favorite flower was the Ladyslipper, which really
looked like the softest, most dainty lady’s slippers.
After much practice, I became good at Seeing fairies.
Seeing fairies took a lot of practice because you had to do it in a
special way. The trick was to open your eyes very wide, while paying
close attention to what might move at the corners of your eyes. Fairies
were quicker than quick at disappearing when you looked straight at them,
but if you sneaked a peek to the side while pretending you weren’t,
sometimes you could see them.

And so opens the story of Fairy Hunters Ink…. a story that talks of all the different fairies that are in fairy 2our lives.  A few favorites I would mention would of course be the sock fairy, the one that takes the sock out of laundry – never to be seen again!   However do not be upset, as the Sock Fairy actually uses the sock as a home.

Sheila Dane writes a beautiful book that will appeal to children of all ages.  I was delighted with the beautiful art work on the pages and can just imagine reading this one day to children who will open their eyes wide to the possibilities…

fairy 4I highly recommend this beautiful book.

Faith In Fiction Saturday: The Pastor Character

Faith_Fiction2

Today’s Faith in Fiction questions is:

What do you think about the portrayal of pastors and ministers in general market fiction? How about Christian fiction? How was the pastor portrayed in the last book you read with a minister? What’s your favorite fictional minister? What do you think is an accurate and realistic fictional clergyman?

As I thought about these questions, I have to say it was a bit embarrassing that I actually had to use my Tag Cloud on my sidebar to find my Christian Fiction reviews.  My last one was in March of this year.  Yikes!  I have read more recent Christian reads but they were not fiction.

Looking over that last review of In Search of Eden, the pastor as I recall in that book, was your typical loving Pastor who was kindhearted, giving…  not a real jump out at you character, but a secondary character, almost an “insert pastor here.”

The books I mentioned in last Saturday’s Faith in Fiction, the three Randall Arthur books, the pastors in these books were more the struggling with faith pastors due to life circumstances and/or poor choices on their part.  One of the books portrays a pastor that is so by the Book (literally) that he drives his own wife and daughter away.  Francine Rivers has written of these types of pastors in her Christian Fiction books as well.

I have to admit, I actually prefer the pastor characters I mentioned in the second paragraph.  The sometimes struggling, sometimes questioning, pastor.  To me that is just more real and I prefer to think of pastors as people who are trying to get it right, just like the rest of us.

As far as a favorite fictional pastor character, I am coming up blank here.  All I can think of is the Pastor in The Mitford books by Jan Karon, he was ok, but the books themselves were such light reads.  I am open to suggestions. (Obviously I am in need of a good Christian Fiction book).  🙂

The Constant Princess

constant princess

As youngest daughter to the Spanish monarchs and crusaders King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Catalina, princess of Wales and of Spain, was promised to the English Prince Arthur when she was three. She leaves Spain at 15 to fulfill her destiny as queen of England, where she finds true love with Arthur (after some initial sourness) as they plot the future of their kingdom together. Arthur dies young, however, leaving Catalina a widow and ineligible for the throne. Before his death, he extracts a promise from his wife to marry his younger brother Henry in order to become queen anyway, have children and rule as they had planned, a situation that can only be if Catalina denies that Arthur was ever her lover.

The Woman Who Named God by Charlotte Gordon – Giveaway

This giveaway is closed – winners were posted on September 9 thank you!  🙂

Thank you to Valerie at Hachette Book Group for offering up 5 of these books for a giveaway!

Book Information:

woman who named GodThe saga of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar is the tale of origin for all three monotheistic faiths. Abraham must choose between two wives who have borne him two sons. One wife and son will share in his wealth and status, while the other two are exiled into the desert. Long a cornerstone of Western anxiety, the story chronicles a very famous and troubled family, and sheds light on the ongoing conflict between the Judeo-Christian and Islamic worlds.

How did this ancient story become one of the least understood and most frequently misinterpreted of our cultural myths? Gordon explores this legendary love triangle to give us a startling perspective on three biblical characters who–with their jealousies, passions, and doubts–actually behave like human beings.

Morning Meandering

a big improvement

Coffee Cup and I didn’t travel very far this morning from home…. I clicked on the left side of my blog and traveled through Twitter a bit, something I am still reminding myself to do.  Up until book blogging, I didn’t really use Twitter.  I set up my Twitter account just a couple months ago mainly to connect with other Book Bloggers and that is what I do.  It has been worth it and I have met some wonderful people again who talk books.

Today my goal is (besides helping prep for a large Sunday picnic/potluck after church and get to the gym) 3 reviews that I must post, another giveaway of a great book as well as a new Freebie Friday and a couple winners to announce yet this afternoon.

I will be posting quite a bit today so be sure to stop back, coffee is on.  🙂

Oh and if you missed out on my late night blog post on Balderdash, Word Verification, check it out.  I think it may be fun.

Here also is my BBAW (Book Bloggers Appreciation Week) post which if you are not already signed up…. get over there and do it!

Word Verification – Balderdash (My Thursday Thing)

Ok… I admit it.  I am a comment junkie.  I love – love ♥ LOVE  ♥ to read blogs, the discussions on books, author interviews, bookshelves, great bookish stories and adventures….

but along with loving to comment comes the ever dreaded endless… (dun dun dun dun…scary music)

word verification.

I know it is a necessity…  I get that.  You leave a comment, chances are you going to be word verified.  Yet being a comment junkie… it slows me down.  So to make this a bit more enjoyable… I came up with a plan.

I love word games (not as much as commenting).  To entertain myself and maybe some of you… I decided to share with you a little thing I do while I type in the verification.  I play Balderdash in my head.  Yup.  As I am typing in the word, I think if it was a real word… what would it mean.  Some come easy.  Others…. I really have to stretch the imagination.

balderdashThe definition of Balderdash: An oft used strategy  to elect your own fake definition in an attempt to give it credibility in the minds of your fellow players.

I am going to share a couple with you… and if you like… feel free to play along at home, here or on your own blog.  You can even take the little picture meme I made if you like and use it.  I think this may just be my Thursday thing. 😉

**Note:  These are actual word verifications I have had while posting tonight.

1.  Resthex:  a spell cast on you to help you sleep.

2. Lespat:  Pepe Le Pew having a mild argument

(Maybe they will be better next week when I have a whole week of comment verifications to look at)

Morning Meanderings and BBAW – Lots To Do!

BBAW fav

a big improvementThis morning with Coffee Cup… I have my printed out BBAW (Book Bloggers Appreciation Week) nomination sheets beside me as I have had for the past week.  The categories are wonderful and there are so many!  There are also so many WONDERFUL Book Blogs out there that this is really in some cases, tough decisions.  I am loving it all!

At the BBAW website they have a few questions for those who participated last year, and a few for those who are new to the BBAW.  I fall into the later category and am more than happy to participate.

What has been one of the highlights of blogging for you?

I actually have book blogged  for over a year – however I did not actually start “Book Blogging” the way you see it now, until this past June.  I guess you could say I book journaled.  I am a little embarrassed to say that I did not know this community – at this level – existed.  (I cant tell you how glad I am to find that it does!)

I  created a blog to record my reading … just for record keeping.  It was in June of this year that someone commented on a post I had put up (that was rare too, maybe 2 hits a week.) and when I alice-in-front-of-rabbit-hole9looked to see where they came from I seen they were a member of Book Blogs.  I had no idea what that was, but going to that website was like Alice going through the rabbit hole – a whole new world for me and I have never turned back!

So – after all the babbling, the answer to this question is – community!  I had no idea this existed, let alone at this level.  And most Book Bloggers are incredible!  I love reading their book related topics, I have added so much to my wish list!  I love connecting with authors and publishers (also new to me!)  My husband laughs and says this is what I was wired for.  LOL

What blogger has helped you out with your blog by answering questions, linking to you, or inspiring you?

This is a tough question as many  Book Bloggers have been so nice to me when I ask my questions…. and I have asked questions!  There are many I am thankful for – from helping to create sidebar widgets, explaining Twitter lanquage, and more!

To answer I have to say that when Natasha at Maw Books started the Blogiesta, I was still so new.  The Blogiesta was so helpful and I just loved it!  That weekend I took every mini challenge (thank you to each of those who hosted these!) and I learned something new at every one!  I wish I would have a picture of what my blog looked like before because I can not remember but it was nothing like what you see today.  I put so many hours into the challenge trying to learn and the timing was perfect! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 🙂

One more blog I want to mention here would be Michael’s, A Few Minutes With Michael.  He created my Morning Meanderings Meme and I just love it.  I seen his creative work on another blog, went to his blog and asked him if he would consider creating one for me.  After about a week of sharing what I liked and what I was thinking…. there it was.  I love that there are Book Bloggers out there that share their knowledge and talent!!!

What one question do you have about BBAW that someone who participated last year could answer?

I think my only questions would be as this is year two and I was not around for year one… what is being done different this year?  I look at all the categories and I am curious if this is the same as last years or did you add more?

I am enjoying all of this – the relationships, community, talking books…I have met wonderful authors who email me or call me.  Publishers who contact me when something new is coming up….. I am having such a great time!  Book Blogging for me?  I am like a kid in a candy store.

Final words – print out your BBAW  nomination list today if you have not already.  All nominations must be in by August 15!  If you Blog or not, you are all welcome to vote.  This is a great way to appreciate all those great Book Bloggers out there!

During BBAW Week I will have great appreciation giveaways going on here.  Be sure to stop back often!  The coffee is always on!  🙂
