I have just finished a wonderful book by Cami Checkett called The Sister Pact. Now I am very excited to have Cami here to share with us a bit about her book, her path as an author, and a little about herself.
Please pull up a chair and welcome, Cami Checketts.
Cami, thank you so much for joining me here today at One Persons Journey Through a World of Books. I have to say I have really enjoyed reading your book. The Sister Pact. What was the idea behind this book?
Cami: I had a nightmare about a man accosting my sister and pushing her down the stairs. When I woke, I started writing and the story just spilled out.
The characters Savannah, Allison, and Noah, even Wes – are well developed. How did these characters come about for you? Was the book always going to be about sisters?
Cami: I always see my characters in the nightmare that creates the story. I know what they look like, a bit about their personalities from that initial nightmare. When I start writing the characters take on a life of their own. I’m also a big daydreamer, so I focus my daydreaming on my current WIP and get all kinds of interesting conversations and tidbits about these new friends.
The book was always written for my sister, Abbie. The romance sprang up on its own.
What was the hardest part of this book to write?
Cami: Wes (the bad dude). He was so cocky and twisted. I hated getting inside his mind.
Of the books you have written, do you have a favorite and if so, why?
That’s like asking what my favorite chocolate is. Love every piece I inhale! My favorite book is always the one I’m working on because I’m so immersed in the story and characters. But I have to say that I still have daydreams about Ethan from The Broken Path. He’s one of those heroes that you can’t forget.
LOL… I suppose that wasn’t a fair question! How did your writing career begin?
Cami: After my second son was born, I fought post-partum depression. My mother woke me up for a nap one afternoon and said, “You need a hobby. Go downstairs and write a book.” I shrugged and said, “Okay.” Haven’t had time for a nap since!
If you were to identify a message in The Sister Pact that you would like your readers to take away what would it be?
Love yourself. You can’t truly love others if you don’t feel good about you.
That is a great message. Do you have a favorite book?
I would have to say The New Testament. It’s one of the only books I’ve read more than once! I truly have so many favorites. The best ones I’ve read lately are: Saving Madeline by Rachel Ann Nunes, Lemon Tart by Josi Kilpack, and Illuminations of the Heart by Joyce DiPastena.
Books I will have to look into as they come highly recommended by you! So what is next for you? Is there another book in your future?
Cami: I’m sending off my next manuscript today. It’s a book about a mom who blogs against certain television stations. The owner of the stations sends a hit man to take care of her. It’s so terrifying to me I won’t let my husband go away on guys trips until I’m finished with this book.
Wow! That sounds like a great read. What is one little known fact about you that you could share here?
Cami: I once won a Dairy Princess contest because I was the only one who could get milk from the cow.
Thanks Cami! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and I cant wait to look into your current books as well as get a look at the new one!
Cami: Thank you, Sheila! Many blessings!
Here is some fun information I learned about Cami! She loves fitness and is actually having a contest starting in October! Check it out here and check Cami out below as she teaches us great fitness tips!
Ooh…. I hate being late…. and I am late… really late on this giveaway. I just now drew for our early September giveaway of The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency book and I am excited to announce our winner is:
drum roll please…
BRENDA RUPP!!!
Woo hoo! Congratulations Brenda! I have emailed you for your mailing info. 🙂
I have mentioned before how while morning blog hopping a blog can lead to a blog that leads to yet another blog…. (don’t pretend you don’t know what I mean…LOL)
A few days ago I was popping in to see a few of my favs and I was over at a A Few Minutes With Michael catching up on what is going on in his life when I linked to another blog from a post on his. The blog is called Serendipity. I think it was partly the layout…. part header (what a great header)… and most definitely the book review that popped up on top…. but I was suddenly amazed that I had not seen this blog before.
The review that I seen was for a book I had never heard of, Flyte by Angie Sage. It has YA Fantasy all over it and while this is a pretty new genre for me… I seen to have recently embraced a few books that have come my way that have fallen in this category (Bran Hambric for one…) . I red her review to discover this wasnt even the first book in this series. It is actually book two and she links to the review of the first one which again… I suddenly felt that all to familiar feeling that this was a must read for me.
I highly encourage you to take a minute or two today to go see Vivienne’s blog Serendipity. I have been back to her blog several times over the past few days and see other book and reviews that I have enjoyed.
I was so excited to get this post up this morning before I took off for my new morning routine of “delivery person” to the school that I totally left Coffee Cup out of this post today…. in fact – even out of my hand as I am up and typing and then off to get ready – all pre coffee. Amazing! I am totally caffeine free and typing….. it is a miracle! LOL
A beautiful book that would make a lovely gift for the father of the bride… ~ Sheila
Babies come in two kinds-boys and girls. We know that going into parenthood. Still, most dads get a little nervous when the nurse places in their arms a tiny bundle. They can relate to boys…football, toy trains, etc. A girl, on the other hand…well let’s be honest. What in the world does a father do when he’s invited for imaginary tea? Robert Wolgemuth puts these anxieties to rest, relating all the wonderful times that are waiting to be hand with a special little lady-your daughter. He focuses on what works, like “reading riddle books” and tenderness; and what doesn’t, like comparing her to other girls and harsh punishment. Best of all, this is a book about making an investment in the life of a little girl who, some day, will become one of her daddy’s closeset friends.
My Thoughts: This was a different read for me for several reasons. One it is written for a father. I am not a father. It is about fathers and daughters. I also do not have any daughters.
What is amazing about a book like this is that I dont have to be a father or have daughters to appreciate what Robert Wolgemuth is writing about here. In She Still Calls Me Daddy, Robert really brings his own personal stories to life here, as he shares with great passion and faith about having daughters, raising daughters, and then letting them go. I really enjoyed this book and as someone who never had the opportunity to have my father walk me down the aisle or have my dad meet my husband… it was bittersweet as to a relationship we could have had.
I think this book would make a wonderful gift for the father who is soon giving away his daughter.
This book was sent to me for review by Thomas Nelson
Hey all…. as you (my readers) know – the past two weeks around here have been a bit more crazy than usual with BBAW (WHICH ROCKED!!!) and the addition to our family for awhile (the amazing 14 year old Chance).
So – while I am still working on getting things back to semi normal around here…. I am finally posting the all important and fun weekly meme of Word verification Balderdash. (If you have not followed this fun post yet – please look here to see how to play).
The definition of Balderdash: An oft used strategy to elect your own fake definition in an attempt to give it credibility in the minds of your fellow players. …
I dont have a large offering today – but here are some fun ones I could play around with a bit:
presic: the feeling you have moments before you get sick… like you know it, but you are not sure… and then…. well… you know!
Chewsee: Being choosy about what you chew… like “I really am chewsee about Extra Gum”.
pairer: Someone who matches people up – like a dating service.
exestrot: Something not very nice that you wish on your ex boyfriend/girlfriend
So there is my weak contribution this week – hopefully some of you will have great ones to add!
Remember if you do this – leave me a link here and I will add you to this post! 🙂
Morning all. I have Coffee Cup in hand so this is a safe zone for all to enter. The crabbiness has passed. 🙂 Justin (college son) is coming back for the weekend so we are doing dinner tonight! YAY!!! I don’t know if I am cooking or if we are going out – but it is just great to have him here for a bit!
I should be finished with The Sister Pact today and I was up late last night as it was driving right into a huge last 40 pages or so climax and ….
I just couldn’t keep my eyes open.
How sad is that? The book is great and it had nothing to do with the book – I was just so tired.
So – review should be up this afternoon or tonight as well as the Carpet Boy review.
Chance is reading The Invisible Wall by Harry Bernstein and has shown an interest in reviewing it (pause for huge smile on my face here!).
I will help him with that when he is done with the book – either a review here or I will help him start him own review spot on wordpress.
Have to run and get Chance to school and me to work…. Lots more to say… even a great new blog I discovered – but I will have to save the suspense for later…
Oh and yes, there will be Word verification Balderdash…. oh yes, my friends – there will be balderdash later. 🙂
Seven school days now since Chance has been with us and still no school bus option.
“Hrumph” (or whatever Grumpy from Snow White would say in this situation…)
It is not that it is so bad – except the delivery of said 14 year old to school each day by 8 am seriously cuts into the meandering time…. especially since said 14 year old loves to chat at night when it is usually my reading alone time. I sound like a spoiled blogger…. LOL
So this morning I am whipping out a quick message and even Coffee Cup is a bit annoyed with me as I hurry to get ready for my day – drop Chance at School, get to the office, work on payroll, hair appointment at 1:30, pick up Chance at 3:15 and Group Power at 4:15. Depends on the weather if I will get to bike tonight with the Brainerd Group or not. Probably depends a bit on me working on the ‘tude as well. 🙂
Anyway – I have a review coming up late today – possibly two if I can finish the wonderful book I am reading, The Sister Pact.
I am currently in Cache Valley, Utah with Savannah Campton and Dective Ryan. We have just left the hospital after visiting Savannah’s sister Allison who is still in a coma from the fall that may – or may not have been an accident. I can feel Ryans tension as we are driving back to Allison’s home…. is Savannah involved? Did she harm her sister and if she did…. why? And wouldnt this whole scenario be easier if Ryan wasn’t so attracted to Savannah in the first place?
It is the first day of fall and I finally have a chance to get on line…. it has been a busy morning and now in my office I can crank out a little bit of “Sheilaism.” Coffee Cup and I have not made it to any blog stops this morning and that is a bit annoying as I love to start my mornings with visits.
However – never fear…. I do have something to chat about this morning so fill up your cup and pull up a chair.
So today I want to mention the books that is currently making its way through the blogesphere – Oprah’s latest book club pick, Say You’re One Of Them by Uwen Akpan.
On Friday, September 18, 2009, Oprah revealed the 63rd Oprah’s Book Club pick Say You’re One of Them by author Uwem Akpan. Her selection of Akpan’s debut collection marks the first time Winfrey has ever chosen a book of short stories. She said, “These stories left me stunned and profoundly moved.”
Told in five separate stories, each from the perspective of an African child protagonist, Say You’re One of Them vividly captures the resilience of children in the face of unimaginable devastation. Published in 2008, this compelling unforgettable work depicts Africa in its glory and grace as well as its horror and pain.
Author Uwem Akpan was born in Ikot Akpan Eda in southern Nigeria. After studying philosophy and English at Creighton and Gonzaga universities, he studied theology for three years at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
He was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 2003 and received his MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan in 2006. “My Parents’ Bedroom,” a story from his short story collection, Say You’re One of Them, was one of five short stories by African writers chosen as finalists for The Caine Prize for African Writing 2007.
Say You’re One of Them won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book (Africa Region) 2009 and PEN/Beyond Margins Award 2009 and was finalist for the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. In 2007, Akpan taught at a Jesuit college in Harare, Zimbabwe. Now he serves at Christ the King Church, Ilasamaja-Lagos, Nigeria.
I am not one who follows what Oprah picks, but this book caught my attention and has held on. I think for me this is a read I will have to pursue… and coffee cup and I are on our way to do that right now.
