Can you even believe it is December? I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!  We did here.  For the first time in 4 years both my boys were home. Brad has been in the Navy for the past 4 years but is now out as of mid October!  😀  On Friday, my College Son Justin went back to Mankato as he had to work and everyone went back to life as usual so my cousin Cheryl and I went to the cabin in Finland Minnesota.  It was a fantastic time hanging out with her!  We just came back this morning where I dropped her off at her car and went to the Library to help with the holiday decorating.  It was fun!

It was a good week, I have a few (ok… maybe more than a few) more book/audio reviews to post this week.  Here is what I am reading and listening to right now:

Alice Love is twenty-nine, crazy about her husband, and pregnant with her first child.

 

So imagine Alice’s surprise when she comes to on the floor of a gym (a gym! She HATES the gym) and is whisked off to the hospital where she discovers the honeymoon is truly over — she’s getting divorced, , she has three kids, and she’s actually 39 years old. Alice must reconstruct the events of a lost decade, and find out whether it’s possible to reconstruct her life at the same time. She has to figure out why her sister hardly talks to her, and how is it that she’s become one of those super skinny moms with really expensive clothes. Ultimately, Alice must discover whether forgetting is a blessing or a curse, and whether it’s possible to start over…

After listening to The Husband’s Secret by this same author and enjoying it, I was more than curious about this one.  About half way though I am really enjoying it!

Lady Catherine, the Earl, and the Real Downton Abbey, a transporting companion piece to the New York Times bestseller Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey, tells the story of Catherine Wendell, the beautiful and spirited American woman who married Lady Almina’s son, the man who would become the 6th Earl of Carnarvon. The couple presided over Highclere Castle, the grand estate that serves as the setting for the hit PBS show. Following the First World War, many of the great houses of England faded as their owners fortunes declined in the new political and social world of the 1920s and 1930s. As war loomed, Highclere’s survival as the family home of the Carnarvons was again in the balance—as was peace between the nations of Europe.
    Using copious materials—including diaries and scrapbooks—from the castle’s archives, the current Countess of Carnarvon brings alive a very modern story in a beautiful and fabled setting, paying particular attention to the staff who provide Highclere Castle with continuity between generations.

I just started this one this weekend at the cabin and have not got far but think it is going to be interesting!

Now the anchor of The O’Reilly Factor details the events leading up to the murder of the most influential man in history: Jesus of Nazareth. Nearly two thousand years after this beloved and controversial young revolutionary was brutally killed by Roman soldiers, more than 2.2 billion human beings attempt to follow his teachings and believe he is God. Killing Jesus will take readers inside Jesus’s life, recounting the seismic political and historical events that made his death inevitable – and changed the world forever.

I was not sure I was going to read this one.  I have listened to Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy but this one…. yet a friend told me it was really interesting so in I go. 😀

Not sure what the next book will be but whatever it is… I am looking forward to it.  I also am excited to see what you are reading as we kick off the next 4 weeks of holiday craziness of parties, gift giving, time limitations, family and friends.. and boy… I sure hope there is room for books too. 😀

On a sadder note.. my heart goes out to the loss of Paul Walker, one of the stars of the Fast and Furious movies who died in a horrible car crash yesterday.

It has been a good week.  I had a low key weekend and wrote up some of the reviews I keep saying I am going to write and then…. do not.  I also have been flying through some really good audio and it feels so good to be back in my audio groove.  Here is what I am reading and listening to this week:

Lovable child star by age ten, international teen idol by fifteen, and to this day a perennial pop-culture staple, Corey Feldman has not only spent the entirety of his life in the spotlight, he’s become just as famous for his off-screen exploits as for his roles in such classic films as Gremlins, The Goonies, and Stand by Me. He’s been linked to a slew of Hollywood starlets (including Drew Barrymore, Vanessa Marcil, and adult entertainer Ginger Lynn), shared a highly publicized friendship with Michael Jackson, and with his frequent costar Corey Haim enjoyed immeasurable success as one half of the wildly popular duo “The Two Coreys,” spawning seven films, a 1-900 number, and “Coreymania” in the process. What child of the eighties didn’t have a Corey Feldman poster hanging in her bedroom, or a pile of Tiger Beats stashed in his closet?

I just started listening to this one.  I grew up on the Corey Feldman (and the late Corey Haim) movies…. Dream A Little Dream, Gremlins, Goonies, Stand By Me….  his story is one of tragic grace.

Shandi Pierce is juggling finishing college, raising her delightful three-year-old genius son Nathan, aka Natty Bumppo, and keeping the peace between her eternally warring, long-divorced parents. She’s got enough complications without getting caught in the middle of a stick-up and falling in love with William Ashe, who willingly steps between the robber and her son.

Shandi doesn’t know that her blond god Thor has his own complications. When he looked down the barrel of that gun he believed it was destiny: It’s been one year to the day since a tragic act of physics shattered his world. But William doesn’t define destiny the way others do. A brilliant geneticist who believes in facts and numbers, destiny to him is about choice. Now, he and Shandi are about to meet their so-called destinies head on, making choices that will reveal unexpected truths about love, life, and the world they think they know.

A typical fun southern Jackson read… I am a little over half way through this one.

I am always looking for great movies so this guide is right up my alley!

I have a confession… I enjoy (probably not the right word…) Ann Rule’s true crime books.  I have not read one in a long time and I have never tried one on audio.  EXCITED!

Bloodmark and Lady Catherine, The Earl, and the Real Downton Abbey are up to be read.  I am excited about both and have a cabin weekend coming up and one gets to go with!  Which will be?  Which would you take along?

So that’s the week!  Thanksgiving is pretty quiet for us as our family is quite small and we just stay home.  This year will be exciting as both my boys will be home for the first time in 4 years now that Brad is out of the Navy!!!  I am looking forward to hanging out with them. 😀

This week I have started some new reads and I am excited to move on them:

The Mortal War is over, and sixteen-year-old Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She’s training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And—most importantly of all—she can finally call Jace her boyfriend.

I have started this one… with a little Davinchi feel… this could be interesting.

Since the publication of A Mile Down (2005), a true account of Vann’s misadventures at sea, his highly acclaimed works have won 15 awards and been translated into 18 languages. Yet perhaps none have drawn more deeply on Vann’s own violent family history than this latest novel about an unnamed 11-year-old boy on a hunting trip with his male elders. While camping with his grandfather, father, and family friend on their ancestral 640-acre northern California ranch, with Goat Mountain looming above, the foursome stumbles on a poacher whom the boy, on an inexplicable impulse, shoots and kills. Recounting the incident decades later, the boy, now a man, describes the harrowing aftermath of his actions, from his father’s decision to hang the corpse in full view of their camp, to a hellish night on the mountain alone after snagging his first buck.

My week was a pretty busy one with book club, helping with the teens, spent a little time sick, and cheered on two friends as they ran heir first half marathon.  Reading was minimum, but I managed one post, and here is a picture from our book club review (more on that this week):

Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince by J K Rowling (audio review… I know, I know… but read it.  Its funny.  I think.

As for this week, here is what I am doing that is new:

I feel rejuvenated.  I think I have done more BOOK reading the past two weeks then I have done in months.  In feels great to really dig into a book and actually have time to enjoy it. 😀  I even wrote a couple reviews:

Ok… I lied.  I wrote one review.  I really need to catch up.  :razz;  BUT I did write some fun morning meanderings… about a show I will miss, about the end of the kickball season (yes, kickball!) and my struggle with the book club book.

This week I am still listening to Dr. Sleep (phone) and The Half Blood Prince (car) and reading The City Of Class by Cassandra Clare.  As far as whats up next….hmmm….

First off – I did write last weeks post!  I did!  From that Little Cafe in Ely Minnesota – I wrote it and I scheduled it to go live on Sunday late afternoon…. and…. crickets.  😦  I dont know why it didnt go , but clearly it did not.

Along with last weeks post (yeah yeah… the one that wasn’t but was) I had planned a giveaway $10 Amazon Gift card…sort of a “while I am away” plan.  Since no one knew about the giveaway because the post was like a bad stick of dynamite and never went off…. As for this week I do have a few things going on (YES!):

While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City—whatever the cost?

I whipped through the second book while in the boundary waters and now have dived into this book #3.  The Mortal Instrument series is giving me a good Harry Potterish fix 🙂

This one, needs no introduction. 🙂  This was my “comfort listen” while I drove the 5 hours to Ely this last week and then 5 hours home I enjoyed a good listen to an awesome favorite series.  A little bonus, it is on the banned book list and of last week was banned book week.

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. I am fascinated with the premise of this book… bringing back the little boy from The Shining all of these years later is BRILLIANT.  I started listening to this one today.  So excited!!!
