Morning Meanderings… and a Late What Are Your Reading

Unintentional MIA there….

Well, Fall has arrived, and I have hit the ground running between work and all the to-dos. Reviews to write and things to chat about. To start with -YAY for the Friends of the Brainerd Public Library Fall Book Sale. I got a chance to volunteer and a little time to shop as well. I came home with 10 treasures:

I am currently reading ( still)

Its good, just a slow pace this time of year for reading reading….

I’m listening to:

It’s good… and thank goodness because I have had a couple recently that have been not so great ( reviews coming soon).

For Book Club ( we meet next week) – we are reading our October Classic, and our group selected The House of Seven Gables. So far, I have heard it is a struggle… (I have not started yet). I need to get on this and figure out a way to make the discussion fun 😀

Check out Kathryn’s It’s Monday, What Are You Reading for great selections ( and yeah yeah… I know it’s Tuesday…)

Talk Soon! Enjoy Today!

  1. The story itself is a good one. It’s just drawn out in a way that slows the reader down to irritation. I have a feeling I scanned it for the story parts, much like Melville’s Moby Dick… I just rushed through and felt remorse -very little at the time of reading, more so later – the reader’s remorse that makes us feel we MUST read every word to be a true lover of all that is lit.

But for book club?!- Look at the house in Salem that can be toured. Revisit the “witch” that was accused because someone wanted the land. Why do they stay in the house? Why…why…why? What kind of curse do we place on ourselves – What self-fulfilling prophecy do the house’s inhabitants bring in with their guilt? How does it compare to The Scarlet Letter? I also suppose you could play with the word choice. Make it a game- Melville’s 100 words to describe ____________. Who can say it in 20 words? 5?! How would other authors write this today? (So gruesome probably or much more psychological thriller obvious… but Hawthorne- he makes the reader work for it.)

Let us know how it goes! This is a good choice for a classic October read. I picked up Rebecca for the same reason.
