Morning Meanderings… Book Lovers Have Book Wishes Too!

2a1

Good morning!  Happy Wednesday!  We are half way through the week and I am looking forward to the weekend!  Last week was so busy I feel the need to get in a bit of chill time this weekend I hope. 😀

Recently I read a blog post that mentioned how book lovers like us rarely get books for Christmas as no one would dare try to guess what we have and what we don’t and what we want to read and what we do not want to read.  I apologize, I do not recall who’s blog I read this on. I do recall however, how true a statement I thought it was at the time.  Days later, I am still thinking about it.

It is true that I rarely get a book for Christmas or my birthday , or any gift giving scenarios.  And it is true for all the above reasons, people have no idea what book I would like to have.  It is the very reason why I put a wish list on this blog years ago and it remains there today so friends and family could see what I is on my coveted list. 😀

I thought today I would post some of the new items that have hit that wish list…

1bMy new found love for all things Moriarty has brought this little gem into my radar.

1hEver since I first seen this in Shelf Awareness I can not get it out of my head.

2cI love foodie books and memoirs of chefs.  This one looks delightful!

2dI adored Cinder and am looking forward to this one!

2gOk, even though this cover almost seems to scream “self published!” it is not… and it is J K Rowling hiding under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, which makes me curious….

2fAny time a book is said to be “The next Harry Potter”, I am listening.  As of this date, the only series that has even come close IMO is The Mortal Instrument series and even that does not compare to the sheer brilliance of the HP books…. but, I am always looking. 😀

2iIt shocks me as well that I have not read this yet after I have heard such great buzz.  Truth is, I have not picked it up yet!

When it comes to books, I could just go on and on and on, but this is a small grouping of books that are on my radar to read, but at this time do not own.  Christmas… is coming. 😀

Readers, what books would you like to see under the tree this Christmas season?  And even if you do not celebrate Christmas, what books are you hoping and wishing for?

  1. I guess the answer is what I DON’T want ;). Actually, there are a few: The Perfume Collector, Amy Tan’s latest, The Ghost Bride, Eliz. Gibert’s new one, the Beautiful Creatures box set and any and all Annie Leibiwitz’ coffee table art books

  2. I loved The Bone Season but it is a difficult book to get into…once you do…it’s amaze balls…but…it’s no Harry Potter…when I read that months ago…it seems as though it’s more of an author likeness…young author…out of the blue with this brilliant concept. The book I loved more than Harry Potter this year was The Thickety…I fell in total bookish love with the main character…it was a scrumptious book!

Hope Santa brings you the books you want!

  3. One way of letting people letting know what you want is by setting up a wishlist at elfster.com and sending out the list to those that will likely be sending you a gift.

  4. My mom loves to buy books for Christmas, so I always put together a list of her. I try to put books on it that I probably wouldn’t buy myself (new hardcovers or graphic novels or something). I’ve got a copy of The Bone Season that I’m excited to get to, maybe over Christmas.

  5. I usually hope for gift cards too – like someone else said – although I have no problem getting books. It doesn’t matter which book, I’ll try it. If it’s possible – Scarlet is even better than Cinder – so I hope you get it 🙂

  6. Yep, most gifts I get are gift cards at this point, and typically for Barnes lol I love the fun of getting to browse in a bookstore KNOWING I’m going to buy something! 😀

And as far as “Harry Potter,” in my opinion, no matter how hard you look or how much any author tries, they will never be able to accomplish the many things she accomplished in writing that series. Her world, her characters, her voice, her plotting and subplotting, just EVERYthing was weaved so perfectly and seamlessly (imo), that it carried millions of readers of all ages through an unforgettable experience. Our hearts and interest was SO entwined, feeling the “realness” of these characters in a way that made us care so deeply. No, I can’t imagine that will ever happen again.

I just finished reading CHAMPION by Marie Lu and loved it. I loved the whole series, just as I did THE HUNGER GAMES, and as much as I was caught up, and as much as I sobbed uncontrollably toward the end of CHAMPION, it still wasn’t the same ride as HARRY POTTER.

In fact, when I read Rick Riordan’s THE LIGHTNING THIEF to check out the series, I was turned off practically from the beginning. My feeling that he literally took Jo Rowling’s formula, from the 3 main characters to the camp instead of a wizarding school, really made my stomach flip. And honestly, I thought the story was pretty lame and second-rate as far as being imaginative. I sincerely feel that it is BECAUSE readers are hungry for another “Harry Potter” that this series took off. It can’t come close, in my opinion.

Also, I read THE CASUAL VACANCY and initially had trouble adjusting to the adult content after having read her writing with Harry Potter. I also had trouble following the many characters and was confused. It wasn’t until I took the time to actually list all of them and how each of them was related to the other, etc. that it stuck in my brain and I could enjoy the book. Ultimately, though the subject matter was tough and only one of the characters was likable (well, to me), she didn’t disappoint. I purchased THE CUCKOO’S CALLING, but never got past the second chapter. I’m reading too many other things! I’m much more drawn to KidLit from board books through Young Adult 🙂

  7. I tell my family that gift cards for books are a perfect gift for me – brick & mortar stores as well as online. I have The Goldfinch and The Hypnotist’s Love Story on my Kindle but not sure when I’ll get to them. I was going to buy the hardcover of The Goldfinch but when I picked it up at the store it was so HEAVY! That made it a Kindle buy. I love Moriarty’s books. She’s a wonderful author.

  8. I have The Goldfinch and The Cuckoo’s Calling and I still haven’t read them either. As for my Christmas book wishlist, there’s so many books it’s hard to name a few. If I just get an Amazon gift card I’d be happy and I’ll order whatever I’m in the mood for at the time 🙂

    1. I’m thinking they don’t want to enter a bookstore!

Back when I was first married, I remember my husband’s (ex now) first birthday as a married couple. His mother and sisters actually ASKED me what he needed. I told them EXACTLY what he needed and VERY CLEARLY SPECIFIED “NO sweaters! He has too many and NEVER wears them!” What do you think ALL of them bought? *sigh*
