It’s Monday! What Are You Reading!

3

I love being a part of this and I hope you do too!  As part of this weekly meme I love to encourage you all to go and visit the others participating in this meme.  I offer a weekly contest for those who visit 10 or more of the Monday Meme participants and leave a comment telling me how many you visited.  **You do not have to have a blog to participate! You receive one entry for every 10 comments, just come back here and tell me how many in the comment area.

Under the new and hopefully improved 2013 guidelines, the winner each week will receive a $5 Amazon gift card.  This past weeks winner is:

Jay Riv

Congratulations Jay!   please send me an email at journeythrougnbook@gmail.com and I will get this out to you later this week!

It was a pretty good week here, I did manage some posts:

BEA:  Day 1 What Is Up With My Pants?

Lets Explore Diabetes With Owls by Davis Sedaris

BEA:  Day 2 Blogger Con and the Harper Parties

Safe Haven Movie Review

BEA:  Recap Day 3 Least Favorite Book Of The Expo

BEA:  Recap Day 4 Breakfast at a favorite authors house!

BEA:  Recap Day 5 Potted Potter and the books!

Blogiversary Party (lots of fun going on here!)

I have a few still to review.  I hope to get caught up this week.  As for what I have going now:

1a1aDavid Sedaris’ new collection of essays – including live recordings! – tells a most unconventional life story. It begins with a North Carolina childhood filled with speech-therapy classes (“There was the lisp, of course, but more troubling than that was my voice itself, with its excitable tone and high, girlish pitch”) and unwanted guitar lessons taught by a midget. From budding performance artist (“The only crimp in my plan was that I seemed to have no talent whatsoever”) to “clearly unqualified” writing teacher in Chicago, Sedaris’ career leads him to New York City and eventually, of all places, France. His move to Paris poses a number of challenges, chief among them his inability to speak the language. Arriving a “spooky man-child” capable of communicating only through nouns, he undertakes language instruction that leads him ever deeper into cultural confusion. Whether describing the Easter bunny to puzzled classmates or watching a group of men play soccer with a cow, Sedaris brings a view and a voice like no other to every unforgettable encounter.

I listened to him on audio and really enjoyed it – I needed more 😀

I also need to give the winners of the packages from yesterdays Blogiversary party – using random.org…. here is the winners:

  1. Sheila
Firstly thank you for comment on my blog. Always nice to get a surprise! it’s also interesting to find you as I participated for quite awhile in the younger version of IMWAYR, with Jen and Kellee. I always read the blurb about Sheila from Book Journey! I have fallen back a little on my mg and ya reading I am afraid, as I have let other interests take over. So happy to follow you!
    Kathryn

  2. Um, I did enter last week… My comment from last week: “With Book Expo keeping you busy last wekk, I hope you are able to relax to a good read this week.
I stopped and commented on 90 participating posts for this week.
here is my Monday post.” And yes I realize I even misspelled week. I didn’t comment right away as it took time to go through everyone’s link to leave a comment that was at least somewhat meaningful.

    1. Hi Jay, I am going to have to look at the comments again! I did not see anyone who said anything about comments and counts on the June 2 posting, but it was almost midnight when I wrote this last night so I may have missed it – I will look again this morning 😀 Thank you for letting me know!

  3. Enjoy your books this week and well done to all the winners. I was last weeks winner I’m not sure if you got my email, if not I’ll email again 🙂

      1. Oh that’s fine I was only wondering as I’ve been having internet problems this week so there are a few emails I’m not sure if they went out or not. I’m in no rush.

  4. I hadn’t realised Sedaris has a biographical type book in the works looking at his earlier years, his writing is so much fun! Playing soccer with a cow? How does that even work? I must read this when it comes out! 🙂

  5. Yay I’ve got 20 comments in so far – I really love going through and seeing what everyone is reading, so glad I have more time to get through them. And your BEA posts made me wish I was there 🙂

  6. Happy blogoversary! Congratulations! I love your blog. It just wouldn’t be Monday without it!

    1. I picked it up off audible.com, if you haven’t used it I recommend it and your first book is free. I like listening to his books as he is the narrator and that really adds a little extra… he is hilarious! 😀

  7. You are such a dynamo! I’m finally FINALLY going to finish Kitchen Confidential. It’s good, I just have been squeezing other books in the middle and interrupting it. 🙂

  8. Wow so jealous about you at BEA. Hope I can share in the fun next year. Awesome job at winning!! Thank you so much for sharing and I hope you have a great rest of your week. So jealous you got Splintered.

    1. Then you do not want to know that Splintered is actually two books… if you flip it over the sequel is on the back cover and you read that book that way – yup… two books in one. It is FREAKY cool! 😛

  9. I always enjoy my visits here. I’m going to try to join in the meme on a regular basis, and I love visiting others (did 10 today!)

  10. Oh Woohoo!!!! I won! I won! 🙂 Thanks Sheila – can’t wait to check out those prize books! I’m going to have to check out David Sedaris now, since you have had such good things to say about him! Have a good week!!

    1. Well Lori, when I got up this morning I found you in the kitchen with your head in the punch bowl….snoring away 😀 You looked so peaceful I decided to leave you there and I went to work 😀

  11. Wow! You had a busy week! I will have to scan through all your BEA posts and try not to get jealous. I’m excited for ALA in a couple of weeks so I really have nothing to complain about. 🙂

I’m off on a couple days of vacation before summer school starts, so I went and visited 10 blogs and commented. Now to do some reading! Have fun catching up after BEA!

  12. I read with interest your BEA journals–lived vicariously through you 🙂 Now you have a nice TBR stack to go through! Congrats to the winners of your blogoversary contest also. I have visited and commented on 11 or 12 of our fellow linked bloggers here, and hope to continue on to more if time permits today. Have a happy book reading week!

  13. I have a number of David Sedaris books that I’ve picked up at Goodwills and book sales. Need to start reading them! I don’t think i have this one though. I hear he’s very good. Suppose I should find that out for myself! 😉

    1. I have only listened to him on audio and while I think the books will be good – I love that he narrates his own audios… its fun to listen to his “matter of fact” way of story telling and sound effects.

  14. I stayed so long at your party that I almost overslept this morning and have been running ever since. And now I get online and see my name at the top of the winners list. Thanks, Sheila! And it’s even the package that looks most interesting to me. A fun time was had by all, and I safely flew my magical flying carpet home late in the evening, smiling all the way.

    1. It was funny Bonnie – when I was working on the winners last night your number came up first… I am so glad you made it home safely – I was worried after the sangria drinking contest (which you also won by the way 😀 ) but I was revealed to see the carpet had auto pilot 😀

        1. Since it is now August 9th, two months since this contest, I must conclude that my email to you with my new address didn’t get to you — or arrived too late, and you sent the books to my old address. Whatever, I never got a package. Any idea what happened?

  15. Happy Belated Blogversary! i hope with all the prizes you are sending out this week you are able to find some time to do some good reading!
I commented on 50 posts this week 🙂
