Morning Meanderings… Hobbit Book Club

Good morning!  Wednesday!  already!  WOW!

I usually feel these days like I am behind – behind on reviews, reading, and occasionally life as well.  Today would be a fine example of that.  As I was looking through some old emails that I had yet to open (*sigh*) I found an interesting link to an online Hobbit Book Club.  As you more than likely know, The Hobbit is coming out as a movie.  What you may not know is that I LOVE all things Tolkien.  SOOOOOO…. I have to look into this deeper.

If you click on the link, you will see I am already behind.  If you know me, you know I am going to try to catch up anyway… 😀  My posting of this today is to make sure you 1.  know about the read-a-long and 2.  see if anyone else is doing this already, or would care to chase after it like me… with me.

I leave you with these questions…

Have you read The Hobbit before?

Are you interested in reading it now – pre-movie?

And most importantly…

Is that Dumbledore in the movie trailer?

  1. I have read the Hobbit before and I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would (I read The Lord of the Rings first and this one couldn’t compare). I am planning to reread The Hobbit before seeing the movie but I’m sure I will like the movie much more. As for Michael Gambon, I checked and he isn’t in the movie. Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf though (and I’m glad that Frodo and Legolas will be in it too). I can’t wait to see it.

  2. I have read The Hobbit and it is simply a glorious book! 🙂 I was thinking of re-reading it before the movie came out as well. I don’t seem to watch movies until years after they come out though, lol, so I’m in no hurry 😉

  3. Thank you for posting. I am definitely going to re-read. I think I read The Hobbit when I was 14, so this will be a treat! I wonder if I have a copy of it somewhere in my house……

  4. Thanks for the heads up! I might join you if I can make it work time-wise. I read MOST of the Hobbit in high school. It was something dumb like I had to take the book back to the library and couldn’t finish it. So I did, thinking I would check it out again when I had more time, but I NEVER DID! I pretty much read all of it EXCEPT the very end. Lame, I know. I’ve been wanting to re-read it before the film comes out but haven’t gotten around to it. Since it’s going to be a trilogy, I keep telling myself I have two more years until they get to the end, but if I’m being honest, it’s been so long since I read it, I don’t remember much of the beginning, either. 😀 Like I said, I’ll try to make it work. It’s going to be a crazy year’s end! 😀

  5. I found The Lord of the Rings and then The Hobbit in my middle school library when I was eleven and life has never been the same. Reading The Hobbit, for me, has always been reading something else set in the same world–it’s a great book, but I’ll always love the other books more. On the other hand, it does have Beorn and Aragog and Smaug. Hearing Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug is one thing I’m looking forward to.

  6. I feel better knowing I’m not the only one that doesn’t open some of their email for a few days!

I read The Hobbit way back in college and saw the first movie, the animated one. Probably time for a reread, it’s been too many years to remember the detail. Or maybe I’ll just watch the new movie.

  7. I was never much into fantasy as a kid, so I never read The Hobbit. However, as a college student, my boyfriend dragged me to the first LOTR movie when it came out, and that cliffhanger ending got me. I read all three LOTR’s before the second film came out. I think I would like to read The Hobbit before the movie this winter. I’ve been “borrowing” the book from my mother for, oh, probably going on 6–7+ years now!!

  8. I read the Hobbit right after college, and then I read the first one and 1/2 of the following trilogy. I liked the Hobbit way more than I liked lord of the rings. While I have fond memories of the original cartoon movie that I saw a LOT as a kid, I’m excited for the new movie.
While I am not ruling out a re-read, it might not happen for a bit.

  9. I read The Hobbit (actually listened to the audiobook) last year for book club. I was surprised at how much I liked it and at the simplicity of the story (it was written as a children’s tale). I’ve attempted LoTR before, so I was expecting the Hobbit to be similarly difficult to read and was so pleasantly surprised. Enjoy your adventure in Middle-Earth!

  10. I’m already hosting a read-along of The Hobbit right now, but going at a slower pace so there is time for it and other things. Wallace (Unputdownables) will be hosting a read-along on her blog too, starting next month I think. So if you wanted to not rush to catch up on this, there are other options.

  11. I’ve always thought that Dumbledore looks remarkably like Gandalf 🙂 Most people choose to misinterpret that statement and think I’m saying Dumbledore and Gandalf are similar WIZARDS, which is totally not the case, but the movie renditions of them both are very similar. In fact, when I saw my first HP movie, one of the first things I thought was “whoa, they just had Ian McKellon change his costume a bit!” So I will maintain they look similar until the end!!!!

Totally checking out the book club link 🙂

  12. What a coincidence! Last night before bed, my husband just turned to me and said he wanted to re-read The Hobbit before the movie comes out! He is a HUGE Tolkien fan from waaaay back, so he is very excited about the movie. I never read the novel until we were dating and we read it aloud to each other 🙂

  13. I have read the book ages ago, that is maybe why I really I have to refresh my memory by reading it again before the movie is released. I might as well read other canon works by Tolkien because I heard a lot will be added to the movie trilogy from his other works.

And Sawcat is right, same actor who played Gandalf in Lord of the Rings will play the younger Gandalf the Grey. And Frodo will be back despite having no part in the book.
