Morning Meanderings… Come Into My Reading Room

Happy Saturday all!

I love days that are wide open and this one is…. well not completely, I do have a couple of commitments this morning but as I get into the afternoon it is a get out of whatever free card!  😀  I will not have to leave my house…unless I want to…. I can read or write or bake, or work out, or watch a movie… or all of the above!

For Saturday Snapshot today (*waves at Alyce*) I thought I would take you inside my book room….its been awhile since I have posted pictures of it and the space has quite a history…

Come on in!

The History:

  • Originally growing up this was two bedrooms – one was mine, one was my great grandmothers
  • in 1996, after I inherited the home, the two bedrooms were mine and Al’s and our son Justin’s
  • After we remodeled and finished the basement off the two bedrooms became our son Brad’s and a spare room
  • In 2001 we took out the wall between the rooms, remodeled it and became our home office
  • In 2006 we moved our office down to our business and this room… became my library 😀

The Books:

  • Personal collections (upper shelf around the ceiling)
  • Books purchased at book stores
  • Books from Library sales
  • Books given to me as gifts
  • Books picked up at estate sales (hello original Nancy Drew hard covers!)
  • ARCS
  • Books I have won

They are about 50% read.

Stop over to Alyce’s At Home With Books and see others posting for Saturday Snapshot.

I would love to hear where you keep your books!  I think it is fascinating how we collect them and how we store them!  😀

  1. 50% read! Wow! I would love to step into your reading room and have about 30 minutes to shop!!! Thanks for sharing…I love it!

    1. I always invite friends over to borrow books… I love to share the treasures. Last night a friend of mine pulled one out that I had read a couple years ago, and seeing it in her hand the memories of the book came flooding back!

  2. What a beautiful room! I love it! Do you keep a chair in there for reading? It looks like it has lots of natural light.

I have a spare bedroom in my apartment that is my “office” where I have my desk and laptop and I also have a big bookshelf against the wall where I keep a lot of my books. In addition I have stacks of books on the floor and on my desk (I really need another bookshelf!) and I have a small nightstand/bookshelf in my bedroom where I keep my favorite books. If I ever own a home I hope to have a room specifically designated as a library too with a comfortable reading chair. It would be heavenly 🙂

    1. I did have a chair Christina, then I gave it up when I bought my hubby a tv for our upstairs sitting area in September and gave the chair for him as a tv/relaxing space.

I do miss my chair… I need to correct that soon! 🙂

  3. Oh, I remember my first “visit” to your reading room, when I shared your post about it on my Potpourri blog.

I like your additions, like the shelves that surround the room near the ceiling. A perfect way to add shelf space. I’ve thought about doing this, too.

Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my Saturday Snapshot.

  4. Impressive room! I remember you posting photos of your ceiling shelves a while ago, love this idea.

I have books all over the house…

I ran for 3 hours on the TM last night… my husband just landed in the US so I wanted to have the day open. It feels SO good to have nothing to do on a Saturday morning.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  5. Wow those are a lot of books-I guess that answers my question as to what you do with your books. I must confess that I give mine away after I read them-except for cookbooks. I figure let someone else enjoy them.

    1. I do give quite a few away Esme and in the picture that has the door in it, there are shelves in there and that’s where I keep the giveaway books.

But if the book is good… I hang on to it as I love to loan the books out to friends and family… 😀

  6. oh my gosh…that is so cool! I love it. I am in the process of making one of the spare rooms upstairs a ‘book room’, but right now, they are all in stacks along the floor. I should take pictures sometime.

  7. I wish I had a room dedicated to books and reading but mine are all over the house. Some in the bedroom, the family room, the living room… Of course, I would want to add a chaise lounge, a fireplace, a cozy throw, and a steaming mug of hot chocolate (in the winter) or a tall cool lemonade (in the summer). The lounge would be situated by a window overlooking the garden, with tall majestic trees shading the room from the heat of the sun.

I am inviting you to join in a little fun with a game of tag. It’s a get-to-know your fellow book bloggers kind of game, and you’re it. Stop by my to join the fun.

    1. Hi Shirley! Our timing was just right when the room was empty…. our sons were out of the house – one in the Navy, one in college…. and I had a big empty room 😀

I still have two extra bedrooms for the boys when they come back in town 🙂

  8. Oh I’m jealous. It’s beautiful! I just have a couple bookshelves in various rooms in my house for my collections. Can’t wait until kids move out and I can make a library.

    1. I had a recliner in there Audrey but then I made a tv space for Al for his birthday in September and for the full affect, I moved my chair out and gave to his space.

      Yeah… I miss my chair 😛

Someday I will replace it. 😀

  9. What a grand space for your books! Mine are all over the house, mostly on bookshelves. I’m in the process of remodeling my office and hopefully will get a lot of them organized in there with some new shelves and storage.

  10. Love it! I have books stashed all over the house. A bookshelf in my bedroom, night stand, dresser and a couple dresser drawers, living room shelves, basement, under the bed and a few other places. I would love to have a place to put them all and organize them. Now where is your reading chair?

  11. Definitely jealous of your beautiful reading room filled with books. I have a whole day tomorrow free for reading and catching up on blogging. We’ll see if I can stay away from checking email and web-surfing.

  12. I wish I had a room just for books! Fitting in lots of bookcases was the top priority when I moved into my apartment–and if I run out of space, I’ll just have to move again… I have the soul of a librarian when it comes to my books. Everything arranged by subject, and alphabetical by author. And as I saw mentioned somewhere in the comments, I also just spend time gloating over my shelves sometimes!

    1. I have no rhythm to the current madness in that room… I tried once, I was going to go alphabetical by author but then I have some hard covers some paper backs and it didn’t look good. Now I just kind of “know” the vicinity of a book I am looking for 😀

  13. Thank you for sharing your reading room 🙂

I do love the extra shelving near the ceiling. Great idea and not taking up valuable wall space.

    Have a great weekend

    carol

  14. I love that room! Love it! It’s perfect.
I really like that idea of the far upper shelf around the perimeter, and I wish there was some way I could be allowed to do a similar thing here in my apartment. I have run clean out of room!
