Morning Meanderings… Whats Happening In Books

Good morning.

Every Monday as I am perusing The Monday What Are You Reading posts I almost consistently leave these posts with a book (or two.. or three) added to me already impossibly massive TBR (To Be Read).  AND each week I think I should rat out these bloggers who make my TBR grow to a dangerously tippy pile because they described a book so well and made it sound so appealing… I could not pass it up.

If I ever have a book related injury… those who have added to me TBR (oh you know who you are) are fully to blame.  😛

SO this week I came almost unscathed from the Monday posts except for one.

Christina from Reading Extensively caught me in a book trap when she talked about Anne Ursu’s book Breadcrumbs.

Now I may have been able to pass on this cover… but what I could not pass on was Christina’s description…

“I wasn’t sure if I’d like this at first since I don’t care for the original fairy tale but this retelling was very nicely done and I loved all the references to Narnia, Harry Potter, and other books.”

Seriously… I am a big sucker for book references in other books.

In other bookish moments I have just survived (barely) the assassination of Lincoln (Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly) and the hunt is now on for John Wilkes Booth.  AND Bod Owens has just encountered the man who killed his entire family (The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman).  AND my real life friend Eric Crabtree is sharing another account of his stint in the Air Force Base Hospital in Iraq in 2006 (A Captains Journal).

Where are your books taking you?

  1. I like references to other books in those I read, too. Those remarks seem to ground the book and include the reader in that world.

I think Breadcrumbs looks enticing, too. I just grabbed the photo of the cover so I’ll remember it for later.

  2. I am currently trapped in the menacing Cambridge Falls along with Kate, Michael, and Emma in The Emerald Atlas by John Stephenson. I am also in India with Anju and Sudha, two cousins who are like sisters in Sister of My Heart by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. Who knew you could be two places at once with the help of books?

Killing Lincoln sounds fascinating and I really want to read The Graveyard Book. I need to watch this past Sunday’s episode of The Simpsons which starred Neil Gaiman as he helped Homer write the next big YA book (apparently according to the Simpsons, the next big trend will be trolls!)

Thanks for mentioning my review of Breadcrumbs. I think it is one you might enjoy! Have a great day 🙂

    1. OOH thanks Christina for that info… I do not normally watch the Simpsons bu I may need to make an exception…:D

The Emerald Atlas sounds wonderful! Enjoy your reads! And thanks for sharing your thoughts on Breadcrumbs!

  3. I am back in the blogging world having been absent during our olive harvest, catching up on my favourite blogs. I so agree with your comments about TBR lists, that was the only thing that seemed to benefit from my absence, it actually did not grow for a whole week!

  4. I too loved BREADCRUMBS (not the cover so much), I think you’ll really enjoy it! Oh, and you’re reading one of my favorites – The Graveyard Book is such a wonderful surprise of a book, isn’t it??

    Happy Reading!

    1. I am enjoying it Alison… on audio! It is at the point now where it has to follow me from the bedroom to the kitchen…. normally I have a different audio for each of these rooms but Graveyard Book has gotten to interesting! 😀

  5. I have ‘Killing Lincoln’ on hold at the library, seems everyone wants to read it! There are 7 books in the system and several of them have up to 5 holds on them! I am currently in the London underground looking for a serial killer with Bryant & Mays in another wonderful book from Christopher Fowler ‘Bryant & Mays off the Rails’. And also scaring myself reading about the state of our nation and where we are headed in ‘When the Crosses are Gone: Restoring Sanity to a World gone Mad’ by Dr. Michael Youssef. I need to check out ‘The Graveyard Book’! happy thanksgiving everyone!

  6. At the moment, I’m in the White House with one of Pres. Madison’s slaves, the one who was born at Madison’s home to a house servant and became Madison’s valet and doorman. It’s a fascinating book that comes out in January.
