Morning Meanderings… Fall Reading (right around the corner!)

Good morning!  😀

I hate to even mention Fall (I think last year in a post I referred to it as the “F” word 😯 ) but even I have to admit there is one good thing about fall….

life slows down a bit.

Spring is the fresh air, open the windows season and wait impatiently for the signs of summer…. my absolute FAVORITE time of year…. sunny days, bike rides, grilling, camp fires, beaches… by early September I am happy, and usually exhausted.

As fall enters and the nights become chilly… I turn back to the books.  I love to curl up in a blanket with a hot cup of tea and a good read.  Speaking of good reads… here are a few coming this fall that I have caught my attention:

THE DOVEKEEPERS
By Alice Hoffman

On sale October 4
There’s no magic here; in The Dovekeepers, Hoffman takes readers to the year 70 CE to dramatize a historical event: the storming of the fortress of Masada where 900 Jews took a stand against the Romans. She tells the story from the perspectives of three very different women. We’re thinking that this may be the novel that fans of The Red Tent have been waiting for.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

On sale September 13

This imaginative debut, set in a magical circus, follows two rival magicians who select champions to represent them in a deadly competition.

 The Taker by Alma Katsu
On sale September6

On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her . . . despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.
That’s just a sample…. there are more, but falls not here yet.  😀  Any fall releases you are excited about?
Personal note – tonight 6 of my friends are going to The Help with me.  Yes I went last week… but this movie is really REALLY good.

  1. I read in the paper this morning that there are two opinions among black people about “The Help.” One is that the book/movie perpetuate the degrading of household servants and how dare a white woman try to write about the topic. The other is that this story finally tells the truth about that degradation, and good for her for putting it out there for everyone to see. Personally I see it as history, warts and all.

    1. Wow! Thanks Barbara I had not heard the discussion going on over the movie…. I agree with you – it is history. AND if they wish to push this and make money – there could be a sequel called “The Talk”

      😛

      LOL…. ok… maybe not.

      😯

  2. Fall is definitely my favorite time of year. Of course, summer isn’t beautiful here like it is for you, so mostly I spend summer desparately hoping for a cool front, haha! 😀 And we don’t get real fall weather until late Sept or early Oct, sometimes not until late Oct! But I still love the transition: the kids in school, the Halloween stuff in the stores, and of course all the wonderful creepy books. 😀

    1. The Nght Circus is suppose to be phenomenal…. I have been avoiding reading it until it is close to release time… which may be…. in a couple weeks 😀 SSQQUUEEE!!!!!

Note – I have a beautiful bonus one to give away too 🙂

  3. I love summer too! It always makes me a little sad when it ends. Tank tops and shorts are the best clothing! But I do enjoy fall, Halloween is one of my favorite, possibly my actual favorite holiday, and I love the leaves and my birthday and aniversary and the start of a new school year. I almost think I have more energy in fall because I tend to be starting so many new things then.

    All three books look good!

    1. I hate bundling up Jill so yay summer 🙂 In recent years I have come more at terms with fall… in Minnesota it always saddens me a bit because it is the end of summer… and the nearness of winter. 😀

  4. I’ve always adored fall and winter, and I simply cannot wait to get out my sweaters and wool skirts!

The cover of Alice Hoffman’s new book grabbed my attention. I’m eager to read it.

    Happy Thursday, Sheila!

  5. This has been the first summer that I haven’t wanted to go bike riding very often. due to heat and humidity. I’ve only gone twice this summer and was so hot, sweaty and miserable both times. Now we’re in our rainy season, so nope, no biking now. I can’t wait for fall and even winter, my favorite times to hit the trails.

Hope you enjoy The Help…again! I haven’t read the book yet so I’m holding off on seeing the movie too.

    1. I think I have done more rides this year than I ever have Vicki but finally (FINALLY) I have a good group of active bikers to hang with. Its more fun to ride when you have others you know doing it too. 😀

(I LOVED it the 2nd time too!)

  6. I am so excited for fall to start! Thanks for sharing The Night Circus, I just added it to my TBR list. I am anxiously waiting for September 13th, which is when So Silver Bright by Lisa Mantchev comes out. It’s the third in the Théâtre Illuminata series, which has been awesome so far.
