It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I had a pretty fun week this past week and had prepped enough of my pending reviews to schedule them to go live all week-long which was nice and is always the plan… just doesn’t always work out that way.  Here is what happened at Book Journey this past week:

I am still cleaning up a few reads and plan to keep it light this week as I have a huge week of meetings in the evening and I need to do a little book catch up.  This is the plan to work on this week:

 

I have actually finished this book because I really wanted my review to go live on release day which is this coming Tuesday.  Let me just say that this book is one of the best books I have read so far this year and I have read some pretty good books this year.  Author Sarah Pekkanen and I will also be chatting it up this week about the book, the feeling of release day and more!  😀

 

 

This is our book club read for March and time to get started on it I think…

Four slave women accompany their masters to a resort in the free state of Ohio in the mid-1850s. Lizzie actually loves Drayle, the father of her two children—a brown-skinned boy named for his father and a girl white enough to pass. Reenie is the half-sister of her owner, a cruel man who passes her along to the resort manager. Sweet is pregnant and has a relatively amiable relationship with her master, while Mawu is a wild red-haired woman bent on freedom from a cruel and violent owner. Frustrations mount as they consider their options, tempted to take advantage of the help offered by free blacks and a Quaker woman. But they are guilt-ridden about the prospect of leaving their children behind. The women rely on each other for support as they come together for three summers, catching up on their lives of woe and occasional joy. Drawing on research about the resort that eventually became the first black college, Wilberforce University, the novel explores the complexities of relationships in slavery and the abiding comfort of women’s friendships.

 

With Wondrous Strange not complete, I have moved on to a new one for my IPOD, 1st To Die by James Patterson.  I have always wanted to try this series but once a series gets into so many books I usually back away from it because I do not want to commit to what it will take to catch up.  So far this one is seeming to be pretty interesting!

 

If all goes well I would love a chance to start this book this week as well.  Hannah at Wordlily had a whole week about this author and really peaked my interest in her writing.  I checked a few of her titles out from the library and think I would like to start with this one.

 

 

So that is the plan.  I am hoping to get to our cabin this coming weekend to write which would mean audio both ways for a total of 7 hours!  I am thinking I could get a good jump on a story there!  😀

And now I am so excited to see what you are all reading!  Last week was a tough on for Mr Linky and the upgrade and due to all the time I spent trying to figure out what was happening with Linky I did not get around to all of your blogs as I had hoped too.  This week though, I worked extra hours this weekend and now have Monday off so I will have time to go and check all your posts out!

  3. Quite a busy week you had! I’ve been obsessively stalking B&N website to see if Skipping a Beat would be in stock prior to Tuesday! I purchased it this afternoon and plan to start it tonight before bed. Hope this week is just as good for you. Enjoy your day off tomorrow.

  8. I’m glad to hear that you liked Skipping a Beat. If I remember correctly, it was your review of The Opposite of Me that convinced me to give it a try and I loved it. Can’t wait to read your review of Skipping a Beat!

    I had checked out Wench from the library last year but didn’t have time to get to it. It sounds like a great book.

  17. I’ve read a few of Shreve’s books. I think her first book is titled Eden Close. Would like to have the time to reread it. Fortune’s Rock and Sea Glass are great too. I haven’t read Testimony. At one time I didn’t feel ready to read it. Now I feel ready to read it. She’s a great author. You make me want to grab one of her books.

  24. Every one of those covers is intriguing but the blurb for Wench is really arresting and makes me want to read it. ever since renewing my interest in Gone With the Wind recently I’ve been interested also in all things Civil War era.

  25. I really like James Patterson’s novels, but I wish the audio series would be read by the same narrator. I find it a bit disconcerting to follow a series of audio books with the narrator constantly changing.

    One final comment on last weeks posts … I just finished your review of Think No Evil by Jonas Beiler. This book really sounds like a book I would enjoy reading although it seems be written around a tragedy of unimaginable proportions the premise of forgiveness really is something that our society has trouble mastering. I spent five years in prison ministries and I am amazed at how even family members can’t forgive their own flesh and blood. I will be looking for this book. Thanks for your review of this book.

    1. I did not know the narrator changed Steve.. .interesting… I wonder why they did that?

      Think NO Evil was a powerful read Steve, I have the movie coming to me now from Netflix. I agree with you that it is sad that people struggle with forgiveness.

  26. I love James Patterson’s Womens Murder Club series the 10th one is due out this Spring. I am also looking forward to reading Sarah Pekkahan’s book – I read The Opposite of Me and really enjoyed it.

  34. I just downloaded the free ebook of Listen recently. I don’t usually read Christian fiction but the premise sounds interesting, and you can’t beat free!

    And I’m the same about hesitating to start a series with a lot of books. There are simply too many books!

  42. I’m currently in-between books, but will be choosing another to read. My website has been down this evening so I’ve spent the best part of an hour harrassing the hosting company to get it back up (I’d not long posted a new review!). I’ve got a couple of books here from publishers to review, so I’m guessing my next book will be one of those.

    1. I think I am getting better at picking books Staci that fit me yeah know? When I first started blogging it was so exciting to be offered books but I learned quickly that you can not say yes to everything… I have become way more choosy and because of that way happier with my reading 😀

  50. I really need to get that dang Ipod out that DH bought me for Christmas 2009 and figure out how to download books. Then I could listen while I sew instead of depressing talk radio! Thanks goodness Small World Reads directed me over here. I have such a inventory of book ideas now!

    1. Yes – you need to use the IPOD – it is so wonderful for books! Use audible.com it is super easy, automatically loads to itunes and you plug your IPOD in and it will sync to that and you are ready to roll. 😀

Well, I got a good start Monday morning and wrote in my Monday post that I was ready to “get back to normal”…then my laptop battery ran out and I realized I’d left the power cord at my mom’s this weekend! I just got it back today. Three days without my laptop – torture! So, I’m just now getting around to read some blogs.

    Hope your week is going well. What are you working on writing? I wish I had a cabin to go to – sounds wonderful!
