Morning Meanderings… Can Someone Invent A Book Tracker?

Good morning!  COFFEE CUP says good morning too… we have been up….

a while.  🙂

Yesterday I was working on my interview/chat questions for Cheryl Lu-Lein Tan, author of A Tiger In The Kitchen.  I reviewed and adored her book this last weekend and she has agreed to chat with me about her life, her writing, and her book.

Uh yeah….

about the book.

Here is a little background info…. when I finish a book it goes one of two directions.  If it was an ok read but probably not one I would ever refer to or read again, it goes to my giveaway closet, a closet in the book room that has all the books that go into the prize box for my giveaways.  If it is a book I really enjoyed and will be referring to again, it goes on my book shelves.

There was a time I knew where everything on my shelves were.  If a friend came over and said, “Hey (they say that a lot), do you have the book _____________________ by ___________________.  If I did, I could take them right to it.

This is no longer the case.  Somewhere since Saturday I placed my treasured book A Tiger In The Kitchen on the book shelf and when I went to refer to it today…. I was lost in the sea of book titles flashing before my eyes, and I came out empty-handed.

So if there was such a  thing as a book tracker, (work with me here…. this is a bazillion dollar idea) I could go in the reading room and command it “Find Tiger In The Kitchen” and like a Geiger counter it would beep in the direction of the book and seriously, who couldn’t use such a time-saving device?

Ok… in the mean time.. my search continues….

the good news, there will be an author chat with Cheryl Lu-Lein Tan and that is pretty exciting!

I am off – awesome review coming up today (yes – a gush worthy book!) and I am pretty much missing in action until this evening.  Work, work out, dinner and then Chance to Student Group and I have a class every Wednesday evening.  I will land at home about 8:30 pm tonight.

  1. I used to be able to find my books more easily, too, but now I have stacks everywhere…the TBR stacks are separate from the others, but the “already read” stacks could be: on the shelves, and I have many!;or in the office bookcase or shelf; or in short stacks here and there for ready reference…etc.

I even shelve books in the pantry!

I could use that tracker! Once I was looking for Scottoline’s book “Look Again,” and even thought I had lent it to someone. I called a friend and asked if she had it, so then we were both searching!

I finally found it in one of my unobtrusive stacks with a doll posed on top.

You don’t want to know why that happened…..

    Have a great day!

  2. Part of why I can’t find books immediately any more is that I’m constantly rearranging them, so I can fit more on the shelf, to bring all with x similarity together.

    Hope you find it soon!

    1. I definitely need a system Hannah… I was going to alphabetize by author once but with the mix of hard cover and paperback I didnt like the look of it…. now I think that may be the best way to do it….

      1. I was surprised you went with the geiger counter as a model for your book tracker, though. As you described it, I was reminded of a Gilmore Girls episode, when their group project is to come up with a product, market it, etc. And Louise’s idea is for a Lipstick Tracker. I figured yours could work like that, but then you’d need a lot of them, which would be complicated …

            1. I have been tempted Hannah…. but with Chance in the house not so sure he would be into it and two of my friends are cruising through the seasons as I have been feeding them their way to bring them into the addiction as well 😀

  3. I’m an organization freak. My books are all shelved by category, and then alphabetized within category. (Except in the case of the 50 States category and the European Countries category, in which case they are alphabetized by state or country) To find a book, all I have to do is refer to the spreadsheet I created to find what category I shelved it under. 😉

  4. I just saw this book on LibraryThing for the first time today. It caught my eye, so I’ll be looking forward to your review.

A book tracker would be lovely! I decided to shelve my books by color last year, and they look fabulous that way, but I can never find anything. I used to have them all organized by author’s last name and knew exactly where they were. I’d love to go back to that system, but the shelves are too pretty to mess with at this point. 🙂

    1. It was an awesome book Alyce – I reviewed it on Saturday and the link is above. I am excited about interviewing the author …. just really want to find the book as I had certain things I want to reflect on…. GAH! 😀

Maybe someone broke in and stole it knowing it was so good….. hmmmmm…. 😛

  5. I keep shifting my books from one spot to another and can never really find them. That is probably why I prefer e-books these days though nothing can compensate reading from an actual book.

  6. I shelve them by when they come in. Could use a book tracker too. Great idea. Make a spreadsheet but I would rather be reading.

    1. That is a great idea Carol – I have all my review book in a book case in the corner…. and …. on the stepstool that belonged to my grandma….. and a few on the floor… 😯

My personal books are in the other shelves read and unread as well as the keeper books that I have reviewed and wish to hold on to.

  7. Actually, there’s something you can try if you reeeeeaallly want it. Maybe you need something like a barcode scanner – one at the giveaway closet and the other on the bookshelf. Then before you store it, scan the barcode on the book. Have the barcode scanner linked to your goodreads / LT / amazon account or any of the book sites that have barcode scanning enabled. Then you just need to search on that website for the book. 🙂 Of course, the only part is figuring out the barcode scanner-integration to website part, but I’m sure there is something like that. (If supermarkets have it, we should definitely have sthg like that too) If not integration to a website, there should be an online site where you can save results.

Ok, sorry I got too geeky on you. 😀 Your post really got me thinking about how it can be done. 😀
