Good morning.
This morning as I am thinking about how I do my weekdays, I thought I would share with you from a bookish perspective of how a typical morning goes for me…
Ready?
Grab your coffee cup and let’s go!
6:00 am: I am up and I spend about 30 minutes with a wonderful devotional book I was given from Christmas.
6:30 as I plan my attack (pick out clothes, brush teeth, shower, make up hair, etc….) I am dodging stray bullets and rolling down steps with Lulu as I listen to the craziness that is Stephanie Plums everyday life (IPOD: Finger Lickin’ Fifteen by Janet Evanovich)
7:10 I am in the kitchen and while the coffee is brewing and I am settling in for a quick email check I am getting in a dose of information from a dog’s perspective (Kitchen CD Player: The Art Of Racing In The Rain by Garth Stein)
7:40 I am out the door and driving to work while Diana is worried about her mom who has just been wrapped in a shower curtain and taken to the hospital with complications from her polio that has left her paralyzed from the neck down (car CD player: We Are All Welcome Here by Elizabeth Berg)
Book lovers rejoice – there are always ways to get your “reading” in!
Wow! You really do love to read. Have you ever read a book titled “When I Laid my Issac Down” ?
I read a small sample of this online years ago but I have yet to read the book. It is a good book about faith and other things.
Millie I have and it is fantastic! Carol Kent is the author and I have heard her speak too. She also wrote a second book, “A New Kind Of Normal” which I have yet to read but would like to.
Oh my! I can multi-task but not like you! I am usually a one book at a time woman. I read on the subway going and coming to work, and then at night before bed. That’s it.
I read all day at work for my job, so music is good for that. Hope you are enjoying all of your books 🙂
LOL Jenny! That’s just audio -I read a book in the evening 🙂
i love the way you weave books into every moment of your day. it is just such a wonderful way to read!
I actually look forward to the different story lines!
Unfortunately I’m not a multitasker at anything anymore. When I was younger, I could manage several things at once. Now, at 70, I must do one thing and concentrate. I get less done but you know I think I enjoy things more, in fact I know I do. A former boss, who was a novelist, used to berate me for my scattershot approach to life; now I know what she meant. 🙂
Yeah…. I do tend to get scattered at times… 😀
my car journeys usually have kid in them which require the latest hip/hop/rap music….
i have read both when i lay my isaac down and a new kind of normal…..would recommend to everyone…she does motivational speaking..would love to hear her speak!!
Carol Kent is an amazing speaker – it was when I heard her that I bought her book.
I love how much you love to read. You truly do inspire me so much. And thank you for the great audiobook advice last night. Wonderful! xox
Thanks Rebecca – my love for audio is only about a year old but once I realized it was like “reading” while I was able to do housework, mow the lawn, get ready in the mornings….. I LOVE it!
I never listen to audio books, but it is a wonderful idea! Isn’t The Art of Racing just fantastic?
Jess I am enjoying it! I had a bad experience with a talking dog book and thought never again but this one is good!
It makes sense, now…why you love audio books. I will have to rethink my issues with them! LOL
Imagine exercising while “reading”? Oh, wait, you don’t have to imagine it…you do it!
Thanks for sharing.
And, BTW, I love that cover on the Elizabeth Berg book. Mine is different…equally compelling, but yours looks so cozy.
I do exercise while reading Laurel! 😀
I can go from room to room and have something to listen to. I swear it calms me down because I really do not like to cook – but if an audio is playing… I don’t mind so much 🙂
You don’t like to cook? Wow, that surprises me, since you have so many recipes to share.
I don’t like to cook…and after my marriage ended and I was working all the time and going to school at night, my cooking was reduced to quick meals and take-out! Nowadays it’s microwaveable stuff.
Laurel – I like to “try” but for the most part it is a hindrance as I my schedule is too full and I feel rushed…. audio calms me… its crazy – but true 🙂
Not like you do! ha ha ha……I usally have two books going at once, but I only listen to audio/Ipod when Im traveling. Good idea for when I start my walking program again tho.
I soooo…admire you and your literary multi-tasking!
Have a good day.
I have a couple books too Debbie – but the audio is too hard to move from bathroom, to kitchen, to car… so I have one in each place 🙂
Aargh! I can’t read books by audio. I have such a short attention span, I need to read it. I would get through so many books if I could use audio books.
Try it while you are cooking or laundry Vivienne…. I cant just sit and listen to them but if I am doing something else it works 🙂
If I was dealing with that many books at once I would go crazy! It is just one at a time for me…..
LOL Julie- it works for me…. I listen to each one at least twice a day.
I listen to audiobooks in my car to make my 40 minute commute to work more pleasant. I also have listened to audiobooks while cleaning but that doesn’t work as well for me. I either get distracted by what I’m listening to or I miss important parts.
My library has free downloadable audiobooks for iPOD but I haven’t tried it yet.
Christina a 40 minute commute – that’s is good audio time! I am only five minutes from where I work so it is brief snippets…. 😀
I multi task my entire life but not with books…I don’t like audio books…and I don’t read more than one book at a time…I feel compelled to be loyal to each book and its characters…until I am done…
Patty eventually – a book will win out where everything else stops until i am done with the book that got exciting and totally pulled me in.
lol. What a great schedule. I used to do that. But only for two books. But now I try to finish one book before move to the next one.
hhhmm..Different cover of The Art of Racing In The Rain. I read that book last year and I fell for Enzo. Just cant help myself for crying. I wonder if my dogs or cats thought the same like him. I hope you enjoy the book as I do
I am just starting The Art of Racing as it was recommended to me on the Monday post. Like it so far! 😀
I used to listen to a book while I did the treadmill but I started to get mixed with the book I was reading and the one that I was listening too. I can do that if the stories are very different but never as many as you do.
Don’t know how you manage it.
Carol Wong
I dont know Carol – when they are interesting I just get into them 🙂
I did. When I was working, I got a lot more reading done. I would read a book while eating breakfast, listen to one in the car to and from work, read a different book at work during lunch, read while eating supper and watching TV. I would be working on at least 3 books at a time.
Now I still read during TV and meals (unless it is a sit down family meal). However I spend little time in the car so am not listening to many books on tape. I have dug out the treadmill and hopefully will find my portable CD player so I can start listening. I do listen to books on CD when I am in the sewing room, but I haven’t done much sewing or ironing lately.
Audio really has opened up my reading possibilities Pat and when I need to get things done I no longer have to feel guilty that I want to be stuck in a book.. now I can do both 🙂
I totally mutli-task when it comes to reading. I always have an audio book to listen to when I’m working around the house. I have an e-book that I have on my sony reader, a book for review is always close by as well as a book I’m reading for pleasure. So, I generally have four at a time going.
I do too Deb and it works for me…. I do not get lost or confused but pick up whatever one and fall right back where I left off.
Wow I am super impressed! I can’t have that many audiobooks going that’s for sure! I usually have one main book that I am reading and one audiobook that I am listening too and that works really well for me.
I like the variety Amused… I like having something serious, and something fun….
You go girl! You are right, there IS always a way to fit reading in. I don’t enjoy audio books but still find my pockets of time to sit down and read when and where I can!
Crazy mornings! Just out of curiousity, since you listen to 2 different books each morning, about how far do you really get into them each day?? And is it hard to keep track? I know when I read more than 2/3 books I sometimes get confused.
Great questions Patricia! Actually there are three a day – the one in my IPOD I listen to while I get up and prep for my day – so while I am in the bedroom bathroom are it is on – about 30 minutes a day average.
The one in the kitchen I will switch on while I make the coffee in the morning and prep all my things to leave for work – ten minutes maybe, but I will listen tot hat one again when I come home, clean up around house and make dinner – so probably another 30 minutes.
The final one is in my car and that is what I listen to as I go to work and back, run any errands…
that one gets about 20 minutes a day.
I try not to get really long audios unless it is something I have been just wanting for a long time – so I keep them around 8 hours tops and then they do not take so long to finish.
