I am currently listening to #1 – The Passage.  As I only listen to it in the morning as I get ready for my day, it is slow going.  I probably get in about 15 – 25 minutes a day on it and it is a 35 hour audio.  I can’t really say how I feel about it yet.  It is different and the initial story line hooked me in and I am waiting for that to come full circle.  It also has really made me think about the future of the world – not to this end, but as to how much we fully rely on electricity etc…. but , that is quite literally… another book.

I had a goal this summer to read the books of the series of #4.  I have heard so many good things and I do have the first book, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, I just need to start it.  Sometime.  Hopefully soon.  😀

#8, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks fascinates me and I really REALLY want to read that one.

The rest 2,3,5,6,9, and 10 I know little about but at this time have no interest in reading any of them.

How about you?   Are any of these Amazon “Best Of 2010” on your “to be read” list – or do you have any others you would add as the best of the best so far this year?

40 Comments on “Morning Meanderings…. Best Books of 2010

  1. The only one I feel I have to read is The Passage and while I do want to read the Steig Larsson books I’m not sure I’m in a big hurry to do so. I know I’ll get to them someday and for now that seems ok with me.

    • Ryan let me know when you are reading The Passage. I want to read your thoughts on this one! 😀

  2. I have been meaning to read the Stieg Larsson series…so far, I have too many others to get through first!

I just got an audio book in the mail. I can’t imagine myself enjoying this, as I’m a truly visual person. But then I recall that, when I was a kid (and before TV!), we used to curl up by the radio to listen to stories. Serialized stories that totally captured our attention. So I’m thinking that it’s a skill that could be strengthened.

I’m planning a road trip; if I listen along the way, and then if I take my portable CD player for when I arrive…this could work.

Did you listen to Private, by James Patterson? That’s the one I have.

    • I would recommend it on audio Laurel and I think you may be surprised – I know I am surprised that I am still with this one. I picked it up because had it on sale.

    • I still listen to old episodes of CBS Mystery Theater online. It makes me wish I was old enough to have listened to them when they first came out.

  3. I’m planning on finishing up #2 and #3 of the Stieg Larsson series this summer and I LOVED Henry House. I was not a big fan of The Imperfectionists, however =( I hope you like it.

Fun thing to do, Sheila and I envy you your book purchasing!

    • OOh thanks for the tips Lydia. Henry House? I will have to look to see what that one is about.

  4. I was talking about the Girl Who…series at my Wenches blog the other day. I’d like to read it since I”ve heard so much about it. I’d like to read The Passage to at some point, but like all lists like this, none of the books I consider must reads are on there.

    • Wenches Blog? LOL Andrea… I have book one of the series and have not moved on to the actual reading of it yet. 🙂

      • I keep too many blogs…there’s one I update with a few other ladies, its called The Certifiable Wenches

Its mostly pop culture stuff, restaurant reviews and stuff like that.

I think I will eventually pick up those books at a library unless I can find them at Goodwill or some other used book store.

      • Thats fun Andrea – I always thought team blogging would be a fun thing but I have no idea how I would keep up – I love on this one so 😀

  5. It’s interesting how many of these I don’t recall hearing anything about — 2, 3, 5, and 9.

      • The Imperfectionists I’d heard of on several blogs, don’t think it’s all been good, though. It may be the newspaper aspect of it that helped it stick in my head.

  6. #2 The Irresistible Henry House was one of the highlights of my summer reading so far. VERY good. I have #7 The Imperfectionists on my to-read list.

  7. Good books, I want to read The Immortal Life….. It’s a true story about an African American woman. I would also like to read about The Lonely Polygamist. Good pile of books or a good list from Amazon.

    • Tea I heard about this a one earlier this year and roomed with a girl in New York who spoke highly of this book (Hi Kim! :D)

  8. I loved the Henrietta Lacks book, gave up on the Larsson book, and have Matterhorn waiting patiently on the shelf (it’s just so thick!).

    • Those big ones scare me off this time of year Jill…. I like my summer reading to be shorter reads. 😛

  9. I have The Passage-it is huge and I have not been in the mood for something that big-I will probably read The Hornet’s nest and I have heard about Matterhorn-the rest of them are far far away from my reading list.

  10. yeah that’s my problem with tha passage…so big!
matterhorn is so big too but has had such good reviews……..need more nice 200 page books!

    • Diana, I honestly dont think I would have made it this far with The Passage if I was reading it. The beauty of the audio is that when I get confused or lost in this one I just keep it on and it soon brings me a point I either get it, or fall into the new story line.

AND trust me- the story changes….. and the characters change…. and that’s when I get lost. 🙂 I have to believe that in the end they area ll going to come together.

  11. I’m reading The Passage right now and absolutely loving it! I’m reading it for like two hour stretches of time, so I can’t believe you are reading it in such short bursts! Then again, my laundry is piling up and I think clean dishes have been sitting in the dishwasher since I started reading it. 🙂

    • Ahhh Trisha I have that going on even without being stuck in a book! Actually – I did get some laundry going this morning. 😀 I am glad to hear you are enjoying the book – that is inspiring!

  12. Sheila, you HAVE to read Henrietta Lacks. It’s so good, and I haven’t read one bad review on it.

35 hour audio? I’d have to drive back and forth to the grocery store 1,382 times to finish that!

After the two comments about Henry House, I may need to read that.

Matterhorn is actually one I’ve been wanting to read, but its size has turned me off. Maybe in the winter…

    • Lynne I know – I think that will be my next purchase book unless my library is loving me again and I borrow it but I have a feeling that one will be a keeper for me.

  13. I just downloaded The Passage to my Kindle after reading a sample. I also the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo there. I don’t know when I’ll get to either one though. None of the others really appeal because I’m not really a best seller kind of reader. I prefer genre fiction like paranormals or mysteries or science fiction or romances. None of those regularly hit best of lists. Happy reading!

    • Kathy, I am so all over the board – I like some of the new stuff, old stuff – and most genres….

I love taking an older title reviewing it and bringing attention to a book that may have been missed just due to its age. 😀

  14. I am not sure about that list…there are too many lists out there now…I cant’t even keep up with my own list…I love NPR’s list…I am posting that one tomorrow…it is a new one from them…like Kathy, I have The Passage on my Kindle but I get so distracted with YA Fantasy…but I will get to it…the others I am not sure of at all.

  15. I’ve seen a lot about The Lonely Polygamist and I’d probably read that.

  16. I have only heard of #1, #4, and #8, and want to read Larsson’s series. they will have to stay on my ever growing list of To Be Reads.

  17. How embarrassing–after reading almost 40 books this year, I have yet to read any that are on this list!

  18. My readers just voted that I read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series! So, I will be reading those ones this month!
