What another Monday? Where did my weekend go? 😀
It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.
I love being a part of this and I hope you do too! As part of this weekly meme I love to encourage you all to go and visit the others participating in this meme. I offer a weekly contest for those who visit 10 or more of the Monday Meme participants and leave a comment. You receive one entry for every 10 comments, just come back here and tell me how many in the comment area.
Last weeks winner (using Random.Org) was:
Cassandra – Words On Paper
Congratulations! Please choose an item out of the PRIZE BOX and email me your choice with your mailing address as well! journeythroughbooks@gmail.com
I had a pretty awesome weekend, even if it did go by fast! 😀 My friend Wendy started doing Group Power with me (yay!) and it is so much more fun to have someone to go with. I went to a bridal shower, drove to a nearby town and hung out in the shops, completed a couple of books, and celebrated my 23rd anniversary. (I know – holy smokes right?)
We had the weekend Book Extravaganza, which was so much fun and if you have a few minutes to read the responses to my question where I encouraged people who entered to share a little known fact about themselves then I really encourage you to do so. I was amazed! I even laughed a couple of times (sorry Ryan but that is FUNNY stuff!) (and Lynne – WOW! Super cool!) You can see who won this giveaway here.
Ok so here is what went down here this last week:
A little recap of my bookclubs last years Queen Event (and why we do it)
Author Chat with John Betcher, author of The Missing Element (Minnesota mystery author discusses his newest book – and it sounds GOOD!)
The Bookies 2010 Queen Event (I love my book club! See the pics of who was crowned Queen!)
Born Under A Million Shadows by Andrea Busfield (wow – this book was really good!!)
Author Chat with Andrea Busfield (author of Born Under A Million Shadows – who a this lady has seen it all in Afghanistan!)
Blog Survey Results (thanks everyone who participated – the results were fun and interesting!)
Author Chat with Beth Solheim (what a great lady – and a great book!)
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold (the books, the audio, the movie – what I loved, what was… not so much)
The Weekend Book Extravaganza (oh seriously – you have to HAVE to read these comments!)
The Evolution of Shadows by Jason Quinn Malott (review this week)
The Accidental Adult by Colin Sokolowski (review this week)
Between Sisters by Kristen Hannah (review this week)
Auf Wieberschen by Christa Holden Ocker ( finishing up this read)
Ok I chatted with a few authors last week but did not get a lot of my reviews posted – that’s my goal for this week! 😀
Here is what I am serving up this week for reads:
Yes this delicious looking book was on last weeks agenda and I did not get to it. Why? Well…. look below.
Vicki at Reading At The Beach had a wonderful review on this book. I was kind of in a weekend slump where my books I was reading weren’t really doing it for me. I seen this review and called my book store and they held the last copy for me. I am flying through this and will have a review and author Claire Cook has already confirmed she would love to come and chat with us here! Woo Hoo! 😀
Reading this one as part of a read A Long at 30+ A Lifetime of Books. I am excited to get going on this!
I was on Twitter the other night and a few bloggers were discussing doing this as a group and I thought it sounded like a blast! We are not starting until August 1st but I want to read up on it this week and prepare myself 🙂
My week should be pretty good for reading and hopefully catching up on the reviews that I need to. I am planning a trip to the cabin with some friends this next weekend which will allow for reading (at least a bit) which makes me very happy! 😀
I am so thrilled to see what all of you are reading. Enter the link to your Monday What Are You Reading below where it says Click Here. Thanks and have a wonderful week of awesome reads! 😀
You have some really summery titles coming up this week. Those covers are great – I hope you get a good lot of reading time in. =)
I do too Lydia – I have pretty much given up on tv for the summer other than the occasional movie on DVD so that helps!
I think I will pass on The Lovely Bones, but Born Under a Million Shawdows in highly intriguing!!!
If you bake any cupcakes from the book, please report!!
Melissa- I am planning to make cupcakes with me review as they sent me a pink apron with the book and it just seems like I have to – LOL!
You’ve had a very eventful week, Sheila. I’m looking forward to the chat with Claire Cook, as I finished her book Life’s a Beach this week and have Seven Year Switch coming up soon.
Enjoy your books!
I want to read some of her other reads Laurel – I really enjoyed her writing.
Oh, and you should definitely grab Must Love Dogs…you probably saw the movie.
I have seen the movie Laurel and did not realize that was from her book! Interesting!
The cover of The Icing On The Cupcake is making me drool. Looking forward to your review of Between Sisters as I’ve got that one to listen to on audio. Have a wonderful week reading and catching up on reviews.
Thanks Teddyree! 😀
Wow you had a very busy week. We have several of the same books in common to read. I am looking forward to the arrival of Game On! Diet.
I am flipping through it now Jennifer and it is interesting.
The Icing on the Cupcake looks good. The cover makes me crave sweets I shouldn’t have:) I liked Must Love Dogs (I think I liked the book more than the film although I am a fan of Diane Lane) but I haven’t read anything else by Claire Cook. I will have to look up Seven Year Switch.
I liked your post on The Lovely Bones. Not sure if I will read it yet but I might try the movie. I will check back for your reviews, especially of the Kristin Hannah book. Have a great week!
Thanks Christina – I really liked the Lovely Bones movie, I hope you do too.
Great books this week! I linked up ~ thanks so much!
Have a blessed week and I am looking forward to hearing about your kicking your friends butt!!
LOL Loren 😀
Wow, you are busy! Claire is a riot — have fun with her!
I might try Game-On Diet with you guys. Thanks!
Thanks Barbara, let me know if you do the diet. I am hoping it will be motivating and fun 😀
I liked the reviews on The Lovely Bones and Born Under A Million Shadows. Although The Lovely Bones is more the usual type of book I read.
Thanks Kah! 😀 They were both fun to write!
I’m also reading Color Purple this week! So excited! The diet book looks interesting too – let me look that one up!
Oh cool Aths! Hope you enjoy it!
I’m starting to think I am the only one that didn’t absolutely LOVE Claire’s book. I loved about the first two thirds and then it just got pretty wordy for me. I just wanted her to get to the end. But still, I loved her writing so I’m going to take a look at some of her other books I think.
By the way, your book club IS amazing! I love that you dressed up and everything. How fun!
Have a fabulous reading week!
I was in the mood for that style of read so it really fit for me – and all the recipes, good food, and well….. I think I will love writing the review 🙂
This is my first week participating. I highlighted four of the books I’m currently reading. Pussreboots.
YAY and welcome pussreboots! 🙂
Look!! I’m early Sheila!!!! Woohoo!
Hi Sharon – good to see you this early 😀
Looking forward to the Clair Cook chat, the book sounds great.
amcatoir it is going to be a fun review! I have some ideas…..
The game on diet sounds like a good way to go for me I’ll have to check it out…I hope you enjoy your reading week!
Heidi V I have only flipped through it so fat but like what i seen. I like to compete and hope this will get me motivated. 😀
I’m getting jealous of all the nice summer reads you have. My list looks a bit grim! The Color Purple is a firm favourite of mine.
Have a wonderful week reading!
Myworldlyobsessions – shake it up a bit then and get to the Library 😀
i love the cover on icing on the cake! happy reading 🙂
chelleyreads – I do too…… its yummy 😉
Sometimes I get tired just reading your post. I really don’t know how you keep up. Enjoy your reading week!
Alaine…. I keep weird hours. LOL 😀
The Color Purple is a fabulous read, I really love it. I wish I could use it in my classes but a little too adult for my kids. Enjoy.
Jan I have never read it and look forward to (thanks to the read-a-longs I am finding) getting into books that I have always wanted to read but for some reason have missed out on.
You had another great week. I have “Seven Year Switch” in my Review Pile and can’t wait to read as I have seen great reviews. My list is posted here.
CMash
Cheryl the book was exactly what i was looking for – I didnt want a chunkster or anything deep just something light and fun.
Yet again, I’ve found something to rant about this Monday! I love this meme, it fires the passion in me.
Seven Year Itch sounds like an ideal beach read, too.
Thanks so much, Sheila.
I do like a good rant Amanda….. should I bring something over when I visit your blog? Chocolate? 😀
I read The Color Purple a long time ago and I really enjoyed it a lot. Even though Seelie (spelling?) went through so much, there was a thread of hope and sometimes humor throughout the book. And the end, or toward the end, when she gives the “do right” speech – priceless. I want to read it again – it’s somewhere behind boxes in my garage. I loved it so much, that I tried to read one of Alice Walkers other books – I forget the name now, but I found it so depressing and gloomy that I couldn’t finish it. But The Color Purple – nothing compares to it.
Mardel this will be my first go with the book. I so look forward to it.
That cupcake book is getting to me!! I want to eat the cover it looks so tasty 🙂
Andrea – I have licked the cover… tastes like paper…. 😀
OH Claire Cook is such an enthusiastic author! I found her Must Love Dogs and discovered she lives near me and have always just missed all the opps to see her and get a book signed. Have fun with this one.
My Monday read is Thousand Splendid Suns – I need to get out of the US and have been looking forward to reading this for a long time now. Finally!
Have a great week!
HI Care! How is my roomy? 😀
I want to read A Thousand Splendid Suns – I hope you enjoy it 🙂
Another great reading week for you:) I had one last week and will be having another great one this week. I have so many great books to read that I jump for joy when it is my reading time. My birthday was this weekend and I got to read lots:) Have a great week my friend!
Happy Birthday Bobbie – I hope it was wonderful 😀
I’m hearing good things about Seven Year Switch – I hope you like it.
Oh… I’m so far behind with all things book related 🙂 – I’m home through August though so hopefully I will get caught up and enjoy a few books.
Have a great week!
Mari I keep plugging on but the catching up is not near for me….LOL 😀
I am weird but I love reading Diet Books so The Game is On Diet is something that would appeal to me 🙂
Felicia I am always interested in learning new ways to keep myself motivated – and even more so – better ways to eat. 😀
I think reading a book about cupcakes and a book about a diet within the same week is just going to mess with your mind, lol. I think I would not know what to eat!! Well happy eating and reading, whichever way you go 🙂
Lilly I hadn’t thought about that – LOL 😀
Just visited 10 of my fellow bloggers.
CMash
Yay Cheryl – I hope you found some good books and bloggers in your travels 😀
I have wanted to read Seven Year Switch.
Looks like a great week :o)
Hi Rebecca – I think you should read it – I really enjoyed it. 😀
in the recap of your book club you offered to mail your “year in review” of the books your club read
would you be willing to mail that to me? i’d send you a sase if you want
i’m always interested in what other clubs have read and what they thought!
Diana – I would love to – email me at journeythroughbooks@gmail.com (if you have not already) with your address and I will send that out later today! 😀
Seven Year Switch sounds really good, I added it to my TBR pile. I love the “no boys allowed lifestyle”, that’s totally my philosophy right now!
Have a great week 🙂
Crystal – I have one of those weekends coming up – girls weekend at my cabin coming up – YAY!
Looks like you had a good week! What happened to the lazy days of summer? Looks like you’ve been busy!
I’ll have to take a look at the Book Extravaganza – you’ve piqued my interest!
Sue
Sue that is an excellent question! I wonder that myself…. I remember when I used to lay out on my deck for hours reading and drinking pitchers of ice tea.
Yesterday I was on the deck for about 10 minutes before I started picking up twigs in the yard which led to getting out the wheel barrow, which led to getting out the lawn mower…. LOL
I read The Color Purple a long time ago and enjoyed it much more than the movie. I hope you enjoy it too.
I have seen the diet book at the bookstore and thought it looked really interesting. It would be so much better to do it as part of a group and so much more motivating.
Have a great reading week!
I think so too Stephanie – I am looking through the book now and think it will be a good time. 🙂
I am really wanting to read The Seven Year Switch. There is something about the covers of Claire Cook’s books that really draw me in.
You asked about the audio of The Dead-Tossed Waves on my blog – it is good so far, not the best audio I’ve ever heard, but I don’t want to shut it off and not listen to it. It’s definitely intriguing and I need to get back to listening to it.
Crystal – the cover drew me in too. It just spelled – woo hoo! 😀
Thanks for the info on the audio.
The Lovely Bones was the first book that my book club read, 8 years ago. And The Seven Year Switch is coming up on the list for another book club I am in.
Debbie I bet that was a good review! Our book club didnt agree to read Lovely Bones so I did it on my own.
I am late again today, waiting on that darn mailman, but you look like you have some really good reading ahead. The Color Purple is on my keeper shelves somewhere and the other two are now on my wish list.
Have a great week!!
Dollycas
My week is here:
http://dollycas.blogspot.com/
Yay Dolly! 😀
I can’t believe it I made to visit the first thirty before my other life starting getting in the way!!!
Have a GREAT WEEK!!!
Dollycas
Dollycas, seriously its like you are turning pro! 😀
I like the idea of using a book to challenge each other in fitness. I’d be interested in hearing more about that Game On challenge – sounds like fun! Have a great time at the cabin with your friends! 🙂
Sami I hope to review it this week and then I will hopefully understand more myself about what the challenge is. 😀
Game On Diet…I’m going to have to check that out. Even though I suck at dieting. I’m the type that does better if I excercise so I can just eat what I want. I don’t like to be told what to do, um, I mean, eat.
Yay for me, I finally participated in the meme (it’s been weeks) and even stopped by 10 or so blogs. That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout! Game On! (Woo, sorry. Too much caffeine)
Hi Lynne – I get that way too Lynne…. I like to work out but I do love my treats….. however, I am also competitive so I am hoping that this team thing will get me back on track 😀
Hi,
Sorry I’m just now getting back to you. You are not too late to join the Hogwarts Challenge. And you can use all the books you read since March 8th.
Thanks Bunnita – I appreciate that. 😀
All the What are You Reading posts sound really good. Too bad we all don’t have enough time to read all the great reads.
Page I seriously believe that if I were never to buy another book but just read what I actually have on my shelves – it would last my lifetime….. 🙂
I’m reading The Color Purple, too. It’s somewhat — but not much — different from the movie. I hope you enjoy reading it.
Thanks Donna – would you believe I have never seen the movie? I like to read books before I see movies and so….. maybe soon! 😀
Seven Year Switch is really good – I think you’ll love it. I’ve met you in real life, so I’m wondering why you’re reading The Game on Diet – you sure don’t need it!
Kathy, between you and your kind words and Jill (Rhapsdyinbooks) who said I was too young to have been married for 23 years, I am just going to have to have you two be my best friends. 😀
Love the cover of The Icing on the Cupcake. Delicious!
Me too Kylie – its yummy looking ;D
I’ve visited twenty folks today.
Oh good – I hope you met some bloggers 🙂
Loved the shots from your Queen Bee event! You girls sure do know how to put on an event! 😉
Here’s my post for this week!
http://thebookmavenshaven.blogspot.com/
Happy Reading!
We try to keep it fun Book Maven 😀
I loved The Color Purple when I read it in the 80s. It is time for a reread.
Thanks Nise!
I’m a fan of Claire Cook, I look forward to her visit. I loved reading the comments on your Book Extravaganza giveaway- so many made me laugh. It was a great question!
Oh good Shawnee, I am looking forward to the chat too. Werent the comments funny on that post?
I am in “junk food book” mode at the moment. Basically an attempt to rid my shelves of those books that are strictly fun reads and don’t take much concentration. This time of the year, that is about all I can handle.
I did start one non-fiction that is not in that category. It is the account of the murder of a nun in the early 1900’s. ISADORE’S SECRET: Sin, Murder, And Confession In A Northern Michigan Town by Mardi Link. It is interesting and I am really curious about some of the aspects of the case I read about in the article about the book. I don’t usually do true crime books, but this one seems to be more a study of the town and its people rather than a sensationalization of the murder itself.
Isadore’s Secret sounds good Pat! I actually have read some true crime and found them interesting.
You are always so totally productive! Every review I’ve read on “The Seven Year Switch” has been great, so I think you picked a good one there!
I never count how many I visit, but I know it was more than 10!
Julie I am just now starting to see it when a few days ago I had never heard of it ….. 😀
I wanted to join in on The Color Purple read-a-long, but couldn’t fit it in because of all that was going on. I’ve been wanting to read it for years. I’ll get to it…someday! I am doing The Handmaid’s Tale (by Margaret Atwood)read-a-long with the Classic Reads Book Club. Trish at Hey Lady! Watcha Readin’? is hosting it and it runs the last two weeks in August and throughout September. I’m looking forward to it!
Now I have a question about The Game on Diet book. Is this a new book? Can you give me some details about the group weight loss thing that starts on Aug. 1st? As I mentioned before, I lost 36 lbs. while I was in the hospital and this is a good start for me ( I still have 100-130 lbs. to lose) and I’d like to keep it going.
BTW, thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday. 🙂 I visited and commented on 10 blogs!
Hi Michelle! I too am doing The Handmaid’s Tale read a long. 🙂
I dont know a lot about the game on diet yet – haven’t really gone through it by what I have read said it is more about the team work and making healthy choices which in turn can assist you in losing weight.
A group of bloggers were doing this together and I know some have done it before too. I found mine on Amazon – if I can get it read I will review it yet this week 🙂
I’ve visited 20 blogs, getting better each week 🙂
