In the year since his wife, Hannah, passed away, Dr. Michael Everett has been inconsolable.  Unable to carry on living any semblance of a normal life without her, Michael has avoided contact with friends and family and filled his empty days with work.  So he’s shocked when his brother-in-law, Ritchie, hands him a letter Hannah had written before she died; apparently she’d instructed Ritchie to deliver it to Michael on the first anniversary of her death.

In it she reminds him of her love and makes one final request: she asks Michael to marry again and become the father he was meant to be.  Knowing his reaction, Hannah gives him a gentle push by suggesting three women—each of whom, she says, would make an excellent wife and companion.

Cover Story: The cover is ideal for the story – the white picket fence and an open gate really speak of what the book has in store.

I am a jumble of genres am I not?  Recently having read a true crime, a dark mystery, a non fiction, a children’s book, and now I sit this book down on my coffee table with content.

Debbie Macomber came on my radar many years ago with her Cedar Cove Series that was a wonderful series of books centered around a town called Cedar Cove.  Each book title was an address and the story line came from the opinion of who lived at that address.  The first one was called 16 Lighthouse Road.  I thought it was a brilliant series!

Flash forward to 2010 and here I cross paths with Debbie Macomber again.  As this book opens we are immediately brought into the story.  Debbie Macomber does not mess around – it is the anniversary date of Hannah’s death and Michael, her devoted husband, is still grieving and buried among the “what ifs”.

When Hannah’s brother delivers the letter to Michael from Hannah, as you can expect there is not only shock but anger.  Hannah has not only boldly told Michael to move up, but also make suggestions of who may make a good wife for him.  (I kind of liked that part, sounded like something I would do!)

What follows is Michael’s journey as he meets with each of these women and learns a little more about his wife and learns it is ok to let go in the process.  The characters are delightful and colorful, Macomber always did impress me with the way she could put the scenes of the book clearly in my mind.

This book is a cozy (envision hot cocoa by a camp fire kind of night) and comforting read.  The book is wonderful for sipping on an ice tea in the sunshine, as from my experience with this author, the book was a feel good to the last page kind of read and I closed the final page with a sense of well-being.

    If I could see any sport? I’d love to catch a Steelers game because its almost impossible to get tickets unless you are a season ticket holder.

  16. I love Debbie Macomber. I think the first of her books I read were her Christmas Angel ones and they are still my favorite. I finished SUSANNAH’S GARDEN not long ago and it too was a rewarding read. I read the first of her Dakota series and need to get the rest of them. She was about 90 miles from here for an appearance and I just couldn’t make it. It would have been enjoyable.

    HANNAH’S LIST sounds wonderful. Especially as we get older, this question enters our minds. In our youth, we don’t even want to consider it. I thought I was terribly ill when our daughters were 2 & 3. I wrote a long letter to my husband and hid it. It is still in the drawer 30+ years later. I had no suggestions for another wife, but yes, I did ask him to move on. He is too wonderful a person to have to face life alone and lonely. There does need to be a closure and permission to move on. But we need to heal before that can take place.
    I may wait a bit to read it. A friend died in her sleep very unexpectedly yesterday. She was only 49, has a wonderful husband and 4 great kids. She was a really lovely person. We never know what the future holds. It probably would be a good idea to write those letters to those we love. One never knows whether or not we will have the opportunity to do so. Everyone needs that good-bye to be able to move on with their life as a whole person.

    Sorry, off message here. Sport to go watch – I’d like to be back in Colorado Springs and be able to attend the AF Academy football games, especially against the other military academies. There is such a wonderful spirit and we enjoyed them so much when we lived there.

  17. I have only read one Debbie Macomber books so far, but I would love to read the Cedar Cover series – and this one sounds great as well.

    Since I hail from CT originally (although I have lived nearly two decades in the Midwest) — I would love to attend a Yankees game in their new home stadium. I still hold out for that possibiity some year down the road.

  25. I would love to go back to Anaheim California and go to an Anaheim Ducks hockey game and a California Angels (now called Los Angeles Angels) baseball game. I had season seats with the Angels for 25 years and the Ducks for 9 years before moving to Indiana.

  42. The only sports I really love to watch are ice skating or ice dance and basketball. I used to be a Sacramento Kings fan when times were good, but the last few years, I haven’t really cared. Don’t even know the players. If I could go anywhere, I would probably go to NYC to see ice skating or ice dancing — hopefully with seats close to the ice. My parents took me to the Ice Capades in Oakland once and I was mesmerized!!

  47. Well, I’ve been blessed and have been to pro football, basketball and baseball, NASCAR, Nebraska Cornhuskers games. BUT, if I could attend a sporting event, I’d like to go to the Kentucky Derby. There’s so much history and pageantry and it looks like good fun.

  55. Where to view a favorite sport anywhere…home sweet home at a Cleveland Indians baseball game on a sunny summer afternoon. Or…to dream a bit…a trip to see any sport in the Olympics, just for the experience of it all!

    Sport eh……..for me that would be my best contact sport – SUMO WRESTLING at the ‘ryogoku kokugikan’ at Tokyo where there is a wrestling match on the 23rd and I can’t go……. too way out of my budget territory……….WAH !!!!!! I know – I know – why sumo ? Lets say thanks to all the martial arts movies my uncle and I used to watch not to mention that the history of the origin of this sport is fascinating as it is informative. It happens when your head is mugged up in history. Love the discipline and the action—- weird but —– that is just what makes us ‘us’ I guess. Enjoy NY !
