Early one summer morning, Matthew Bishop kisses his still-sleeping wife Marissa, gets dressed and eases his truck through Milwaukee, bound for the highway. His wife, pregnant with their first child, has asked him to find the antique cradle taken years before by her mother Caroline when she abandoned Marissa, never to contact her daughter again. Soon to be a mother herself, Marissa now dreams of nothing else but bringing her baby home to the cradle she herself slept in. His wife does not know-does not want to know-where her mother lives, but Matt has an address for Caroline’s sister near by and with any luck, he will be home in time for dinner.

Only as Matt tries to track down his wife’s mother, he discovers that Caroline, upon leaving Marissa, has led a life increasingly plagued by impulse and irrationality, a mysterious life that grows more inexplicable with each new lead Matt gains, and door he enters. As hours turn into days and Caroline’s trail takes Matt from Wisconsin to Minnesota, Illinois, and beyond in search of the cradle, Matt makes a discovery that will forever change Marissa’s life, and faces a decision that will challenge everything he has ever known.

  3. What I treasure the most is one of the few things my family was able to take out of Cuba in the early 1960’s, when Findel Castro came to power. It’s a small diamond ring that my grandmother gave to my mother (her daughter-in-law) when she got married to my father. My parents are now divorced but the love and bond between my mother, grandmother and me is unbreakable!

  9. My paternal grandfather was the first policeman in my hometown, years before I was born. My dad was a child!
    I have my grandpa’s whistle, night stick and handcuffs.

  13. My mom gave me a ring that had originally been a lovelier that belonged to my grandma. It was made into a ring for my mom for her 21st birthday. It was remade and the stones were changed for me.

  16. I have hand made doors made by my Polish grandpa…they are so beautiful that they make me cry. I have two and my sister has two…mine are just resting on walls…one in my entry and one in my sewing room…my sister had hers made into a cabinet and they are amazing…she had hers painted black but mine are the scraping shabby chic color that the years have given them…

  21. My mother recently passed away and I brought home all her old photos, of both her and her family going back a few generations. Though they’re worn and faded, they mean so much to me.

  23. I have a few items that I cherish. I have my great grandmother’s wristwatch. I have the last picture of my great grandfather before he died in the war. I have a ring that belonged to my husband’s grandmother’s. I could continue for at least another 10 lines, but I will leave it at that. Thanks for the entry

  26. Wow, I have a number of possessions that I cherish, including my parents’ wedding rings, photos that have been passed down to me, various dishes and other household items including a couple of beautiful lamps.

    I have a cradle that my Grandmother gave me when I got married. My grandson was the 6th generation of our family to use it. It is a spindle platform rocking cradle. There is a small quilt she made for it and some old stuffed animals made of fabric and embroidered. It currently holds the old dolls and stuffed animals.

  39. I have many of the books that my mom used to read to me. Everytime I hold one and read it to my daughter, I think of her and can hear her voice in my head. They are each a treasure and a connection between my mom and my girls.

  41. Sounds like a fabulous read!

    I have a gold ring with a large princess cut peridot- it was given to my mother for her birthday when she was 16 as a gift from her grandmother (my great grandmother). I wear it all the time and it always makes me feel close to the stunning women in my life.

  61. My most cherished keepsake is a tiny pair of red wool mittens that was my grandaughter, Kirstie’s when she was just a baby. She is graduating from technical school and high school this year, then to college in August. She is an Honor Roll student, and going into a bio-tech career. We’re very proud of her as you may have noticed. 🙂

  68. There are a few things that I’ve been given that I cherish: a ring, a bracelet, my family history. But the one thing that I’ve always wanted is a double-frame filled with pics of my mother and father when they were about 22 years old. My mother has told me that I can have it after she dies, but she just isn’t ready to give it up yet (despite the fact that they’ve been divorced for about 25 years). So, considering that caveat, I’m happy to wait!

  71. I have a “ugly” basic white doll with an embroidered face that sorta looks like Casper the Ghost, whicht my Grandmother made for Nicholas to play with at her house when he was 1 1/2. It was so ugly Nanny and I giggled and giggled about it. When she died I had to have it and slept with and cried into it for quite a while.
