It’s Monday! What Are You Reading!

It’s Monday!  What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week.  It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

I love being a part of this and I hope you do too!  :) As part of this weekly meme I love to encourage you all to go and visit the others participating in this meme.  I offer a weekly contest for those who visit 10 or more of the Monday Meme participants and leave a comment.  You receive one entry for every 10 comments, just come back here and tell me how many in the comment area.

Last weeks winner (using Random.Org) was:

What’s on brew this week?

This week I leave Thursday morning for Florida to see Navy son for the weekend.  That means a hectic next few days – but I should be able to make up reading time on the plane.  🙂

From the author of the international bestseller “Incendiary” comes a haunting novel about the tenuous friendship that blooms between two disparate strangers—one an illegal Nigerian refugee, the other a recent widow from suburban London.

Anke’s father is abusive to her brother and sister. But not to her. Because, to him, she is like furniture— not even worthy of the worst kind of attention. Then Anke makes the school volleyball team. She loves feeling her muscles after workouts, an ache that reminds her she is real. Even more, Anke loves the confidence that she gets from the sport. And as she learns to call for the ball on the court, she finds a voice she never knew she had. For the first time, Anke is making herself seen and heard, working toward the day she will be able to speak up loud enough to rescue everyone at home— including herself.

As children, they formed a special bond, growing up in the small town of Ames, Iowa. As young women, they moved to eighth different states, yet they managed to maintain an extraordinary friendship that would carry them through college and careers, marriage and motherhood, dating and divorce, the death of a child, and the mysterious death of the eleventh member of their group. Capturing their remarkable story, The Girls from Ames is a testament to the enduring, deep bonds of women as they experience life’s challenges, and the power of friendship to overcome even the most daunting odds.

The girls, now in their forties, have a lifetime of memories in common, some evocative of their generation and some that will resonate with any woman who has ever had a friend. The Girls from Ames demonstrates how close female relationships can shape every aspect of women’s lives-their sense of themselves, their choice of men, their need for validation, their relationships with their mothers, their dreams for their daughters-and reveals how such friendships thrive, rewarding those who have committed to them. With both universal events and deeply personal moments, it’s a book that every woman will relate to and be inspired by.

That’s the plan…. lot’s of coffee… lots of reading (hopefully) and time with both my sons (Justin – College Son is going to!)

  1. Because I Am Furniture sound disturbingly compelling. Going on my list.

I’ll be interested in what you think of The Girls from Ames. I read it awhile ago as an ARC.

    Happy reading!

  2. I like the sounds of Because I Am Furniture and The Girls of Ames. When I get all of my current review books completed I must pick these two up. I hope you have a great week and a safe trip. My daughter is getting married on Saturday so I have a full week as well. Good Luck and Best Wishes.

  3. You had a fantastic week! I also have Little Bee and The Girls From Ames to read, but it may be a few weeks until I get to them. I look forward to your reviews.

    1. Thanks Jennifer! Little Bee is my book club read for Tuesday so have to get moving on that one! 🙂 The Girls from Ames I think may be a good one for the plane.

      Have a great week Jennifer!

  4. I have Little Bee ( mine is called The Other Hand) waiting to be read – its supposed to be great.
Have a lovely weekend with your sons – we have a son called Justin too. 🙂

    Happy reading!

  5. I’ve had Little Bee on my radar for a while. It sounds great! I haven’t heard of the other two, but they sound interesting too.

Enjoy your weekend with your sons!

  6. I put up my Monday post. If I had more energy I’d put up pictures of everything, but I spent my weekend allowance of energy on my granddaughter. Fun! Back to reading now…

    1. Thank you Teddyree – I had I Am Furniture for last months Social Justice Challenge and never was able to get to it. I hope to finish it before it needs to go back to the library. 🙂

  7. i’ve read mixed responses about Little Bee but it looks like an interesting book and the Girls from Ames as well. I’m interested about what you’ll think of those two. Happy read Sheila and thanks for hosting this wonderful meme 🙂

    1. chelleyreads – I am almost done with Little Bee for our book club tomorrow evening and I agree with what you are saying here. I will be interested to see what my book group thinks.

  8. I visited 10 blogs – finally! Found a lot of people read WAY more books in one week than I do. I don’t know how they do it!

Sand in My Bra – the title really reaches out to you doens’t it?

And Hasta La Vista Baby – sounds like a very funny and good book. I remember reading something about it a while ago.

    1. HI Mardel – yes there are a lot of big time readers out there! 🙂 Sand In My Bra did catch my eye last summer when I bought it. It was a delight to read and I cant wait to post my review!

  9. Because I am furniture sounds like a sad yet uplifting story. It also sounds as if it might be a cross over, or would you just consider it YA? Looks like you had another great week. Hope this one is a good one too.

  10. What a great week you had! That Kate Atkinson prize pack looks awesome! Plus, all those books you got read! I loved Little Bee and hope you do too. Enjoy your visit with your son!

    1. Hi Kathy, I thought that was a prize pack but unless my brain shut down (which could be possible) I dont know where I won it from. *Although I do recall signing up for it …. somewhere….

  11. I enjoyed your review of the Lotus Eaters. I had pre-ordered that one and have it on the stack for May’s reading.

Once again, I thank you for hosting this. It’s always a pleasure!

    1. Bluestocking – I know they are working on improving it currently. When I set it up last might it was under maintenance and they are changing the name. I am hoping it works for the links today.

Sorry it is being difficult – did you try kicking it? 🙂

  12. You have some great books lined up this week. I have wanted to read Little Bee for a while as I’ve heard such good things about it, and Because I Am Furniture looks very compelling. Happy reading!

  13. Looks like some great books read last week, Sheila! I’ll have to try the read-a-thon one of these days. We just returned from a 10-day road trip to Louisiana for spring break, so not a whole lot of reading time (I get car sick if I read in the car!), but we listened to some good audio books.

Enjoy your visit to your son!

    Sue

  14. The Alexandria Letter looks interesting, although I have never heard of it. I’m off to check it out. I didn’t get a chance to participate in the read-a-thon due to other committments, but I want to congratulate all those who participated here.

I commented on some 20+ blogs today.

    Have a great week!

    1. Hi Stephanie, if I remember right, it is suppose to be Davinchi Code like….

Woo hoo on the 20 visits 🙂 You are rocking and rolling this morning. I need more coffee…. LOL

  15. The Girls from Ames sounds like a great read. I love personal stories, and that is why I am recommending “I Promised You Daisies” by Robert A. Benjamin. It really inspired me about the gifts within us, and if you’re a mom with a gifted child then you’ll especially enjoy this book.

  16. I’ve been wanting to read “Admission” for quite some time … I will definitely enter your giveaway. And I just got “Little Bee” from paperback swap because the description is just so good and most bloggers seem to love it.

I also recently got the “Case Histories” book based on a blogger’s recommendation too. Good books this week!

  17. Looks like you read some great books last week! Hope you enjoy your visit with your son and that you manage to fit in a bit of reading time 🙂

I have managed to visit 20 other blogs today.

  18. I’m looking forward to reading Little Bee sometime soon. I’m also glad to see that the Read-a-thon, which I couldn’t be a part of, means that loads of other people have reviews to catch up on this week too. I like company in my misery. 😉

  19. I hope you enjoy the Girls from Ames. I read it some months ago with my book club and found it to be a really heartwarming story that celebrates friendship. It made me reconnect with a good friend from high school that I had fallen out of touch in recent years. I’ll be looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

  20. I can’t wait to hear your review of Because I Am Furniture. It was reccommended to me for my high school book club that I run as an after school program… we haven’t finished our current book, but I’d love to hear what you have to say about this so I can check it out as a potential read!! 🙂

    Have a safe trip Thursday!

  21. This is my first week to participate…I love the idea! As a reading teacher, I generally only read books appropriate for my students or teaching books. I’m not sure if that will be “newsworthy” for most people. But again, I do love the idea of sharing, planning and posting!

  22. So glad to have seen you around the Read-a-Thon on Saturday! I had so much fun!

I’ve been really intrigued by Because I Am Furniture and I’m really interested in reading your thoughts.

Hope you have a fabulous reading week! I managed to get to about 30 blogs this week…hopefully more next week!

  23. You have some great books in those pictures! I can’t wait to read all the reviews.

I finally managed to get around to comment on 10+ blogs.

  24. I AM FURNITUR sounds interestin.
I just started BREAKING DAWN by Stephanie Meyer.

Last week I got ALPHATUDES by Michele Wahlder
THE STOLEN CROWN by Susan Higginbotham
    FREDDIE GIRL by Nona David

    I bought:
    MOONLIGHT WARRIOR by Janet Chapman
TURQUOISE GIRL by Aimee & David Thurlo
THE WILD ROSE OF KILGANNON by Kathleen Givens

As you can see, my taste in reading is all over the place. I’ll read just about anything except erotica and horror.
