Definition of addiction:
- being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming
- an abnormally strong craving
Uhhhhh…… yes. My name is Sheila and I have a book addiction.
I mentioned earlier this week that our Library had its spring sale on Thursday. I went. I waited in line. I saw. I purchased.
At 50 cents a book – seriously how can I resist? You as fellow book lovers must understand the draw…. the craving to be with books, to socialize with bookish people who understand when you lay down a bookish quote…
Anyone can speak Troll, all you have to do is point and grunt. (Fred Weasley – Harry Potter Series)
Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones. (Jane Eyre)
But it’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then. – Alice In Wonderland
“That’s exactly the kind of topic Haymitch told me to steer clear of.” – Hunger Games
Oh – but I digress. I am actually here to post what I picked up at the Library sale:
Some of these I already have – Barbara’ Walters Audition I do have here in my home, but would like a copy at our cabin. This is a great pick up and read a little bit book.
Will To Murder is about the Congdon Mansion murders that took place in Duluth Minnesota. I have toured the mansion many times and have read the books surrounding this hideous crime. I have a copy of this at the cabin as I like to keep Minnesota history there – but I do not have a copy here at home.
Mirror Mirror by Gregory Maguire, I have, but like to have copies to give away. Gregory Maguire to me, was the author who started the deeper look into background characters of the stories we grew up with and writing their own stories. I think this was just a brilliant idea.
Ted Deckker’s Boneman’s Daughter I have on the TBR shelf – but for 50 cents I can not pass up an additional copy to give away at some point. Perhaps when I read and review the book…
Of course the Nora Robers Dance Upon The Air and Face The Fire are part of the Three Sisters Trilogy that I am always picking up when I find them. This is a series that I love and hold dear to my heart and grab copies whenever I can find them to pass on to those who have not experienced these books.
The rest are a mix of Minnesota authors to try, a little bit of cover love, author recognition, or just a book I would like to read.
Great collection of books! I don’t know a book lover who would have been able to pass up that sale.
I was born and raised in Duluth Minnesota and have never visited the Congdon Mansion. I keep saying that visiting is a tourist thing to do. I still return to Duluth for each summer but haven’t done any of the tourist things. I would like to read Will to Murder.
Enjoy your finds and happy reading!
I would recommend the tour Kathy. I agree it may seem touristy – a lot of people go for the “what happened there” but my friends and I like to go for the history. The rooms are beautifully decorated with the original antiques…. the library is truly breathtaking…
I think it was two years ago for the first time they started including the third floor as part of the tour and now you can see some of the rooms that were not on the tour originally. They also have a breakfast room that is like a three season porch with beautiful plants and a green tile that I wqould love to have in my own home. 🙂
Thanks for this giveaway. Boneman’s Daughter would be a book I would select since I have never read this author’s work.
Ellie – that would be a good one for me too – it would finally get me going on that book. I have heard wonderful things about it. J Kaye (from J Kayes blog) had said the ending gave her chills!
I would like “Outtakes from a Marriage” by Ann Leary. Actually I would like them all so I picked that one because that was my maiden name – Leary.
Oh – great choice Deanna!
I would love to win Ted Deckker’s Boneman’s Daughter. I’ve never read his books but I’ve heard that they are very good. I would love to start with this one!
Dekker has an interesting style – for the most part I have liked his writing.
I love it. I am a book addict too and I would have been fighting to get past you to get the books! What a fabulous collection there and so cheap.
LOL Vivienne…. I know…. actually this is the first time I made it out of the sale with so few….. last fall I spend $34. yes, I left with 72 books.
Walking Minnesota looks like a good one. Can you believe I went to the sale (which I swore I wasn’t going to do!) took a quick 5 minute browse and walked out with absolutely nothing?!? If only I had that much willpower when it came to dieting!
Wow ANgie – not a book? You do have amazing control! 🙂
Oh, my! I see several there that look good…And I have some of those books, too. Like “Life’s a Beach,” on my TBR stacks, and I’ve read “The Robber Bride” (great book!) and “Between Sisters.” Don’t remember much about that one, but I always like Kristin Hannah.
Have fun, you bookaholic person! LOL
I like Kristen Hannah too Laurel…. I dont think I have read that one and if I have it was a pre blog read. I love the title.
I would enjoy reading Barabara Walter’s Audition-I enjoy her and think she would have something good to say.
Good choice Esme – I wanted that book so bad and picked up my original copy last year on a sale and still have not read it. I think her interviews would be just fascinating…. imagine all the people she has talked to and the topics that have been covered!
Between Sisters sounds really good and I love to read books that are centered in my neck of the woods.
I do too Zia!
I would love to read High Tea in Mosul.
Wow, lots of good books!
Doesn’t that sounds fascinating Margie? That one is a true story of two women in Iraq.
I would love to read Ann Patchett’s Truth and Beauty – I read Bel Canto and fell in love with her writing.
I have never read her Lydia but the book looks so beautiful. Glad to hear you have read and enjoyed her! 🙂
What a great giveaway. Library sales are fabulous.
I would love to win The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood. What can I say? I really enjoy reading her books, and I have yet to read this one! Thanks for holding the giveaway
She, I still have not read her. I can’t believe it! This would really force me to get going on what I hear is an amazing author!
I would love to win Mirror, Mirror because I read Wicked a couple summers ago and really enjoyed it. It was so unlike anything I usually read that it was just fun!
Me too Jo Jo. I was so impressed with the idea that the book was a win for me before I had even read it. We read it as a book group and some of the group went to the theater in the cities to see the play of Wicked. I had a wedding I was in and had to give my ticket up so I missed it. Oh well…
I have not read Mirror Mirror yet but my original copy has been on my shelf for about a year…..
Thanks for the great giveaway! I’d love to try Mirror Mirror because I’ve already read Wicked (my only other book by him) and I loved it! The spin from the traditional was so off the wall and different. Thnks! 🙂
My thoughts exactly heather! I love it when authors think outside the box. And now look at how many books are out there about fairy tales? Amazing!
Great collection of books!! They all look good, but my choice would be “Life’s A Beach” by Claire Cook because, well, Life IS a Beach!!!
LO Vicki – I think that is the perfect choice for you! 🙂
Ohhhhhh my……I am jealous lol at 50 cents a book ….how could you pass that up…wish I lived near you…great finds…great books……did I mention I am jealous
CMash
From what I hear our Library sales are quite reasonable Cheryl. I love that! Of course, that makes me pick up extras as you can see here….LOL
Wow–what a great deal! I love books (I think I have a bit of a problem too).
My choice would be The Thief – I’ve heard rave reviews of it, and I put it on my wishlist a few months ago. Just haven’t gotten to get it yet. I’d read it, then I’d donate it to my SIL’s 6th grade class library. She’s always looking for new books to add to her shelves.
Oh Katy – have you heard good things about it? I had never heard of it but liked the title….
I love that you donate books! 🙂
I Personally Have Way Too Many Books To Count But Of All The Books I Have Read I Have Never Actually Read Or Heard Of Any Of The Titles That You Just Bought. I Do Know Of Nora Roberts But Have Never Read Any Of Her Books. I Have Read The Count Of Monte Cristo, The Man In The Iron Mask, And Three Musketeers All By Alexandre Dumas. So I Was Intrigued By The Club Dumas By Arturo Perez-Reverte So I Looked It Up And Realized This Is A Book I Have To Read. I Can’t Believe I Have Never Come Across This Book Before. This Book Is Definitely Going On The Top Of My To Be Read Pile. I Want To Thank You For Bringing This Book To My Attention. I Would Love To Be Entered To Win The Club Dumas.
You got it Raquel.
Wow, this is a fun giveaway! I would very much like to win The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte. I have not read this book, huge plus for wanting to win it. I am a bibliophile, I adore mysteries and the works of Dumas.
I have not read this one either Jennifer so it could be a new read for us both! 🙂
I would love to win Truth and Beauty.
Good choice Amanda!!
WOW!!! You really picked up some good books!! Can’t beat those prices!!
I loved the opening of this post! You have definitely confirmed for me that I am a book addict!!LOL!!!
I can totally relate to buying books that you already own!! I do that!! Sometimes you just have to when the price is so cheap!! I have at least 10 titles here that I own multiple copies of!
Hmmmm…..I don’t know if I could narrow it down to one choice. You picked up a few that are on my to be read list! (that I do not own yet!) I guess if I had to choose just one it would be Between Sisters.
I think that will be a good book Marilu – Kristen Hannah is a pretty good author.
Our oldest son has finally taken to reading and enjoys the
books of Ted Dekker. It would be great to win
Boneman’s Daughters for him!
You find some wonderful books!
Many thanks, Cindi
Dekker is a great read Cindi, I havent read this one yet but I have heard good things.
When you said “so many books”, I didn’t realize this many! 😮 You got me all jealous, and now I can’t wait for a library sale here. LOL!!
Hmm .. let’s see, I’d love Ann Patchett’s Truth and Beauty! I have her other book here – Bel Canto, and have heard so many good things about her books!
Aths, I am not familiar with the author but on this post alone it sounds like she is pretty wonderful. I am excited tor ead this book!
I would love to read Mirror Mirror. Thanks:)
Great pick Gwen!
I would love to read “When I was Five I Killed Myself” because it’s about a little boy who is placed in a psychiatric residence center, and since I worked in the Psychiatry Department for 15 years at a medical school, this is right up my alley! I’ve seen this book around the blogosphere and have wanted to read it.
Plus, it looks like it’s not a very long book so you’d be able to read it really fast and get it to me quickly! LOL
You are right Lynne…. I was drawn to the book. I actually sat it down at the sale but I returned to it and grabbed it again. I have not seen it around and now you have me curious! 🙂
Nora Roberts, Face the Fire would be a nice win.
I have never read one of her books yet.
You sure did good at the library.
cenya2 at hotmail dot com
Marjorie – this is the third book in the series. The first one being Dance Upon The Air. I would highly recommend this series (one of my favorite!)
I am not a big Nora fan myself but these books really found a place in my heart.
So glad to finally see what you got at the sale!
I’ve been wanting to, meaning to, read Geraldine Brooks for ages. Having one would make it likely to happen sooner. So I’d love to win Year of Wonders!
I had to purchase a new charger for my camera Hannah so I could take a picture of the sale finds. I must have left my charger somewhere during our traveling in February. 🙂
I think that book looks and sounds fantastic too – good pick!
I would love to read Mirror Mirror. Snow White is one of my favorite tales and I loved reading Wicked. Very interesting take on the story 🙂
I never read any of his work beyond Wicked Raelena, but I am anxious to do so and now have most of his books. I enjoyed Wicked too.
I don’t think I would be able to pass those up either, especially for 50 cents a book!!!!
It was hard Staci – thats how I wind up with duplicates…. for that price I will use them for giveaways or for friends to read. 🙂
I haven’t thought of the Congdon Mansion in years. Being from Two Harbos, we went and visitited it once or twice when I was a kid. I may have to check it out again next time I go home for a visit.
I’m interested to know what Titanic 2012 is about and I’m a little jealous of the Garrison Keillor book, funny guy.
Ryan – yes make it a point to see the mansion again – they have opened a third floor now. I have been on the tour probably 5 times and see something new every time.
Oh, I guess if I wanted to win one it would be Titantic 12 just because it’s one I”m not familiar with already.
I am really curious about that one Ryan. I have read a lot about Titanic (yet another topic that fascinates me).
I’d like to read Garrison keillor’s Woebegone Boy or Between Sisters.

Great choices Benita!
I just had to comment on BoneMan’s Daughters. I seriously just finished it today and WOW! what a book! Of course, I’ve yet to read a book by Ted Dekker that doesn’t take my breath away, but this one had a surprise at the ending that I NEVER saw coming. Sooo good! You should read it soon. 😉
Hannah – your not helping! LOL! Now I want to read it tonight! 🙂
our library had a sale like that, but sadly I couldn’t find many books I wanted even if they were 50 cents each…they didn’t even have a YA section =(
I’m glad you found so many though!
please sign me up for Mirror Mirror! I’ve read it when I was younger but I’d love to revisit it again =)
You know ninefly – our sale didnt have a YA section either! I was talking to a member of my book club about that – I want to join the Friends Of The Library to remedy this – LOL
I like Kristin Hannah a lot, so I’ll choose, Between Sisters.
She is a great author Debbie!
my head hurts from trying to decide which book to choose!
but, at last, i must say that i’d pick When I Was Five I Killed Myself. the title is just too much and although i’d never heard of it before, it sounds really interesting.
I thought so too The Little Reader. The book makes me want to read it.
THE ROBBER BRIDE looks interesting. You may think it is a terrible addiction to go to the library sales. It is even worse when you work at the library and are the one to sort the books and set up the sales. I am hope less. I have more books than I will ever live long enough to read. And I still want more. there are so many out there, both serious and fluff, that I want to read.
I lost my job at the library about a month ago and I think my husband is breathing a sigh of relief. Of course, we still stop at thrift stores when we travel, not to mention flea markets, yard sales, and other libraries. At least now I have a little more time to read.
Pat – I inquired this time at our library if the people who set the sale up get first pick. Yes they do. They are called friends of the library and they are volunteers.
I am still debating because I kind of like the thrill of standing in line and chatting with the other bookish people. 🙂
And yes, garage sale season is coming! 🙂
Quite a collection you have there, I love library sales. Good luck to all those who enter your giveaway
HI Petty – nice to see you out and about 🙂
What a great haul! I love library sales. Here in the UK we also have Boot Sales, where you take your car open up the boot (trunk i think it’s called in US) and sell whatever you want. It really fun and I have found sooo many great books that way. Have fun reading them all! 🙂
Thanks Book Chick! 🙂
Sheila,
I love the Brainerd library book sale. I went both on Thursday and Friday. Thursday was very crowded. Friday was better. I do wish they would move the book sale to a larger venue, If all the books were displayed on the tables so I didn’t have to stand on my head and get stepped over, it would be better! Ya never know what treasures lurk in the boxes underneath the tables!
Rosanne
HI Roseanne – good to see you here! 🙂 I agree – I wish it had better spacing. Oh and I am always crawling under the tables looking at the back up books 🙂
Hope you found some good ones!
I would love to read Mirror Mirror by Gregory Maguire. I’m always intrigued by “the other side of the story.” Remember the picture book of wolf’s tale about the three little pigs (I can’t remember the title or author right now)? I’ve been hooked since then!
Yay Amy! Good choice! 🙂
It’s probably a good thing I wasn’t there seeing as how I would have spend all day and a whole bunch of “pocket change”. (What avid reader wouldn’t? LOL.) From your rather interesting mix there, I would like to see what you think about LIFE’S A BEACH by Claire Cook and then read it for myself. Count me in!
Happy reading….
grgenius(at)gmail(dot)com
I like variety Gina – good pick – a beach read would be wonderful – I am so ready for spring! 🙂
Wow! Lucky you!! Bonemans Daughters sounds really good. Enjoy your books!
Thanks Natalie -I think it sounds good to!
I really want to read The Boneman’s Daughters by Ted Dekker, I have heard so many good things about that book.
Also, I know what you mean about library sales, ours was a couple of weekends ago, and I filled a large tote full of wonderful books, and I think I spent about 10.00.
See Jodi – its like recycling and it is a good thing to do right? 🙂
I may be addicted to books, but you are the Queen of Library Book Sales! Very impressive haul! I get too impatient with the crowds, so I’m sure I miss out on awesome bargains. I love books about sisters, so would pick Between Sisters if I had to choose. Although I love the title Stop Laughing at Me, but that just may be my paranoid side talking. *L*
Enjoy all of your new finds!
Thats a book I would just like to carry with me Alexia “Stop Laughing AT Me!” LOL
Dang girl. Our library needs to have such a sale!
I will add my comment to the trillion already here. I’d love to win the Boneman’s Daughter by Ted Dekker. Just read the Circle Trilogy and it blew me away. I’d love to read more!
LOL Cori! This is going to be so great though because if I am reading the book to give it away I will get it done. 🙂 Otherwise they will sit on the shelf like the ones I bought at last falls sale.
You’ve inspired me to go library book sale hopping next weekend – there are always a few at the same time in my parents’ city. I miss that feeling – of being surrounded by random books piled on top of tables everywhere you turn. Ahh. Thanks for sharing your finds! Mirror, Mirror is definitely the one I’d choose – although I haven’t read any Maguire, I am certainly a fan of fairy tale retellings, and Snow White is one of my favorites. 🙂
I would love to read the Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood. Her books have been on my must-read list for awhile and this one in particular looks like it will be really interesting.
Mine too Lee…. I have yet to read this author! 🙂
Wow, you got some really good ones! The Club Dumas is a great book. Did you see the movie The Ninth Gate with Johnny Depp? That movie is based on The Club Dumas. They are really different though. I got some great ones at my sale Saturday…I’m getting ready to post my Mailbox Monday…late as usual!
I have heard some good things about The Bonesman’s Daughter and I’ve really been wanting to read it so that would be my choice. 🙂
Thanks and have a great week!
Another one for The Bonemans Daughter Michelle 🙂
I would really enjoy reading Boneman’s Daughters by Ted Deckker, because I love thrillers. Thay are my favorite books to read. Please enter me. Thanks!
There is a lot of interest in the Boneman’s Daughter Anita! 🙂
I would love to read Walking Minnesota. I’ve never heard of it and I’m a Minnesotan myself and it’s the one that jumped out at me.
misusedinnocence@aol.com
I love books like that Emily. I just love to see all the hidden treasures that are state has to hold.
Hope it’s not too late to enter! I’d love to win Mirror, Mirror by Gregory Maguire. I love fairy tale re-treads, and Gregory does a great job!
Laura
Nope Laura, you were not too late – I had you in on the drawing 🙂
Okay, thanks! I may not have won, but at least I know it wasn’t from lack of trying. Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
Laura
Laura after I read Ryan’s book I am going to run this again with a new sign up opportunity. This will be a great way for me to actually read the books that I bought 🙂
I would love to read Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. I love history and thus am attracted to Brooks’s well-researched, historically accurate novel about the Bubonic Plague.
Please enter me in this giveaway!
Sarah I had you entered for the drawing – good book choice!
Between Sisters looks good. I only say that because I have a sister…and usually enjoy any books sister related. But, I will have to looks it up and read some reviews or a synopsis. Thanks for the chance.
