In My Mailbox

Thanks to Kristi at Story Siren for hosting this wonderful meme!  A few things happened my way this past week!  In this cold weather in Minnesota (currently 15 below zero as I type) the appeal of a good quality blanket and a good read is very much in favor.  Here is what arrived:

In The Crown Conspiracy, Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater, make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles until they become the unwitting scapegoats in the murder of the king. Sentenced to death, they have only one way out and so begins this epic tale of treachery and adventure, sword fighting and magic, myth and legend. Whether you are looking for a single novel, or a multi-book saga, The Crown Conspiracy is the place to begin. It is a heroic fantasy adventure written for a general audience and conceived as a single epic tale.

When these books were offered to me for review I was intrigued by the fact that they are a series yet all individual.  Each one came with a personal message to me from the author inside the front cover – I think that is so awesome and I am excited to see what adventures await me within the pages!

A GOOD TALK is an analysis of and guide to that most exclusively human of all activities– conversation.

Drawing on over forty years of experience in American letters, Menaker pinpoints the factors that drive and enliven every good conversation: the vagaries (and joys) of subtext; the deeper structure and meaning of conversational flow; the subliminal signals that guide our disclosures and confessions; and the countless other hurdles we must clear along the way. Moving beyond self-help musings and “how to” advice, he has created a stylish, funny, and surprising book: a celebration of “the most excusively human of all activities.”

In a time when conversation remains deeply important– for building relationships, for relaxing, even for figuring out who we are– and also increasingly imperiled (with Blackberries and texting increasingly in vogue), A GOOD TALK is a refreshing celebration of the subtle adventures of a good conversation.

I think this book sounds so interesting!  As a huge lover of words – conversation is just as important.

For most kids, a trip to space camp is the trip of a lifetime for Aadi it was life altering. After receiving a camp immunization needed for travel to Mars, Aadi finds that the immunization is the catalyst of an insidious experiment. He realizes what is happening too late for a change of fate. The full experiment is set in motion when he and his co-pilot, Eirena, crash in a distant galaxy called Shrenas, where they change and realize the full extent of their power. This turn of events forces him to grow up quickly, accept his change, and to decide to save a world, or to do what he was trained to do dominate it. His power is coveted by the warring leaders of Shrenas, and he is forced to choose sides a decision that may prove just how much humanity he has left.

This book is a new Middle Grade read coming out in February 2010.  This sounds to me a bit like the movie Avatar (which I loved!).

Putting more than 30 years of groundbreaking research to work, renowned scientist Judith Wurtman, PhD, and her colleague, Nina T. Frusztajer, MD, present a clinically proven 12-week program that uses the power of carbohydrates to help you to:

  • Activate the appetite-suppressant function of serotonin to stop weight gain
  • Regain control over emotional overeating and cravings
  • Lose up to 2 pounds of real weight—not water—per week
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle

I have said it many times that I do like to know about healthy eating habits.  I am looking forward to seeing what this book has to offer.

On a country road, six-year-old Joanna Mason is the only survivor of a knife attack that leaves her mother and two siblings dead. Thirty years later, after boarding the wrong train in Yorkshire, Brodie is almost killed when the train crashes. He’s saved by 16-year-old Regina Reggie Chase, the nanny of Dr. Joanna Hunter, née Mason. In the chaos following the crash, Brodie ends up with the wallet of Andrew Decker, the recently released man convicted of murdering the Mason family. Enter DCI Louise Monroe, Brodie’s former love interest, who’s tracking Decker because of a recent case involving a similar family and crime. When Dr. Hunter disappears, Reggie is convinced she’s been kidnapped and enlists the reluctant Brodie to track her down.

With a story line like this how could I pass it up?

And I have to share this wonderful sample that Julie J sent me from My Own Little Corner Of The World Blog.  These look good and I am going to try the Mandarin Orange during my workout tomorrow.  🙂  Thanks Julie!

That’s my mailbox this week.  Be sure to share your at Kristi at Story Siren’s Blog!

  1. I’m so jealous of the Crown Conspiracy Books, I’ve been wanting to read these books. Can’t wait to hear what you think of them.

I expecting Explorer X Alpha anyday now and am looking forward to it.

  2. Excellent mailbox this week! So cool that the author of the Crown Conspiracy books didn’t just autograph them, but included a personal message! You must be thrilled!

You’ll have to let us know how the energy drinks taste. Most of the ones I’ve tried have been on the nasty side, but I’m still looking as I’d like something other than soda for that extra energy when needed.

    Enjoy all of your goodies!

    1. Alexia,
I’d be happy to send you a free sample if you wish. Email me at faithfulgirl4[at]gmail[dot]com with your mailing address and I’ll send it right out!

That can go for anyone else reading this and who is interested in trying it! They are great!

  3. Sounds like you had a good week. There are a couple of books there I’ll need to check out – Explorer X-Alpha and When Will There Be Good News.

Enjoy these books. Will look forward to seeing what you get next time.

  4. It is -13 here at 10:40 PM. Glad to be cozied up indoors with a good book and my laptop actually on my lap. Explorer X Alpha does sound good! So does When Will There Be Good News. I’ll have to look for them. You certainly read a variety of books! Happy reading!

  5. I’ve wanted to read The Crown Conspiracy for awhile! I need to just buy it since my library doesn’t have it and after a year, it still hasn’t become available on paperbackswap 😦

    1. Wow Page – I really had no idea about these books. When they were offered to me last week I had not even heard of them and now I am hearing so much about them. It is going to be hard to wait on reading them now! 🙂

    1. I never ask for any swag Katrina but when it comes with a book I am always so excited! 🙂 I have seen some great stuff with books on some blogs and some authors really go all out – it is kind of fun to see what they think of! 🙂

  6. Some great sounding reads there. Certainly to be added to my wish list is The Crown Conspiracy – it sounds like just my sort of read.
-15 and here we are thinking it’s cold because it was -2, bbrrrr. Never mind a blanket and a book, I’d want to hibernate if it got that cold.

  7. Oh, these sound good! I have “When Will There Be Good News?” It’s really great. There are a couple of other books that make up a series with some of these characters…”One Good Turn,” and “Case Histories.”

I’ve reviewed all of these, but I don’t have the links handy. If you want them, I’ll look them up. I know I did a couple of them on Explorations and one on Reflections.

BTW, how do you do quoted passages in that “yellowed” framework? Could you send a quick e-mail?

  8. Great loot this week! Good for a few hours of warm reading! Enjoy your Spark! Anyone wishing to receive a free sample, please email me (faithfulgirl4[at]gmail[dot]com) with your mailing address and I’ll send it right out!

  9. Hello,
I hope you don’t mind me stepping in here but I have some news about availability of Book 1: The Crown Conspiracy.

I’m the wife of Michael Sullivan…so nice to see such excitement around his series. I just wanted to drop in because we had some good and bad news about Michael’s first book “The Crown Conspiracy”.

The publisher reported on X-mas Eve that he sold out of his first printing!! This is great news as most new authors don’t earn out their advance let alone sell out. The bad news…it will take awhile to get the second printing in the stores. (Might be as long as March !!)

We do have a few hundred copies that we bought awhile ago with his author’s discount so if you want signed and dedicated copies (with matching bookmarks) at a 15% discount at:

You can read Michael’s blog about selling out on his first printing at:

Sorry for any inconvienence to people trying to get The Crown Conspiracy in the meantime. Unfortunately it is up to the publisher and how quickly he can get a new print run. I’ll update this post when the books become available in the store again.

Can’t wait to hear your review Sheila.

Oh…and the other two books, and ebook versions are not effected. But we have put them on that webpage so you can get signed copies of all three if you like

  10. A Good Talk sounds really intriguing — I’ve never heard of anything quite like it. I am also interested in learning more about the serotonin diet. I wonder whether it’s useful in treatment of depression and anxiety (in combination with other treatments) as well as weight loss.

    1. Stephanie I think it said something about that on the back of the book. That is interesting that diet can affect these things… I am actually always amazed at how much better our bodies function and truly what diseases can be avoided.

  11. I see you are getting ready to dive into the Series by Michael Sullivan. I loved them! I have read and reviewed the first two books: The Crown Conspiracy & Avempartha. I have Nyphron Rising here to read this year. I can’t wait to see what you think of the books. I have also done a Favorite Fictional Character based on a character in these books. If you would like to stop by They are listed in my blog.

    The Crown Conspiracy:

    Favorite Fictional Character:

In The Crown Conspiracy and My Favorite Fictional Character I had a great visit from Michael Sullivan. Hope you enjoy them. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

    1. I will stop by in the a.m. Melissa. I was so busy prepping a review tonight that it got too late for me to do my evening hops to blogs. I will do it in the morning before I go tot the gym. 🙂

  12. I just received my copy of A Good Talk, can’t wait to start that one. Communication has always been a weakness for me.

Hmmmm... what do you think?
