Morning Meanderings…

I was up early (Coffee Cup too!) to start the traditional prepping of the bird.  I always go all out for this day even though it is just the four of us, Al and I, and our two boys, Brad (21) and Justin (19).   Since we have such a small family I think I over compensate with days like this.  I have a 24 pound turkey.  Don’t laugh….. ok, laugh.  I make a big one so the boys have left overs to take home and eat all weekend long.  What else is on the menu?

I have shrimp and cocktail sauce  (something to snack on throughout the day!)

Mixed nuts and M & M’s mixed in… (another mindless snack item)

I am making broccoli cauliflower salad with grapes (so ym and I make it light w FF Mayo and Splenda)

Sweet Potatoes (are a must!  And I have a new recipe this year that calls for FF Plain Yogurt blended in… sounds really good!)

Cheesy broccoli

warm whole grain dinner rolls and bread out of the book Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day (review on this book yet today!)

Turkey stuffing (the boys love this!)

Carrots and vegie dip

I think that is everything.  We have the new Star Wars movie to watch this afternoon and I have Trivial Pursuit for the Wii.  Should be a good day.  We dont really have any traditions… just hanging out together.  Next month Brad goes into the Navy (on the 14th) so this is a bitter sweet holiday for us…. and my job of course is to hold myself together… ha ha.

I am so thankful for my family, my faith, my friends.  I am thankful for our health.  I am thankful for all the things that my eyes are open to in this world and  the heart to want to do something about it.  I am thankful for all of you, for the conversations and the friendships developed through talking books.

How about you?  Any traditions today?  Any fun foods or plans?  I would love to hear what you do!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

  1. Sheila-have a wonderful day-when you have time-can I get your recipe for broccoli/cauliflower salad and the sweet potatoes-I am getting up to make the pumpkin and apple/cranberry pie and potatoes dauphoinse, very poor spelling.

Have you tried agave-instead of splenda?

    1. Sure Esme! I will pass them on in a bit to you! I havent tried the sweet potato recipe yet so it sounds good but we will see today 🙂

The broccoli salad one I have made this way for awhile now and it is so good and I cant even tell I used the lesser calorie items to make it.

I havent tried Agave. Is it better?

  2. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! I just put my turkey in the oven a half hour ago. Made the pecan pie last night but I still have the mashed potatos, apple/walnut dressing, broccoli/cauliflower/carrots in chesse sauce, cranberry relish, apple crisp, wild rice/mushrooms to make. I love cooking, it’s so much fun.

    1. Oh yum Ryan! I forgot to list the pies in the post! I did mine last night too…. mixed wildberry and a dutch apple. I have pumpkin and a key lime that I purchased as well.

Enjoy your day Ryan! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! 🙂

  3. Sheila, your menu sounds yummy, especially the stuff with the FF ingredients. It’s never too late to start eating healthy, right?

That sweet potato recipe sounds marvelous!

My daughter and her husband will be doing the cooking (yay!) at the home of her in-laws. I will be joining them, which seems to be our tradition since the two of them were married. We all get along great. Heather is very health-conscious with her cooking ingredients and everything is so delicious!

Happy Thanksgiving! We’ll probably have some Wii activities, too, as my grandson Noah is a big fan.

    1. Happy Thanksgiving Laurel! That sounds fun… a no cooking day. A few years ago I had that – we went over to a freinds home for the day and that was fun to be on the other side of no prep… ha ha

I do love doing this for the boys though and who knows when we will have all 4 of us together for Thanksgiving again? (I am a bit melancholy today with the Brads Navy thing so close…)

  4. Have a wonderful day! Everything sounds yummy! I’m making what may be a new inclusion to our day, the sugared pecan recipe from the Twelve Days of Christmas recipes at booking mama and bermudaonion the past couple weeks!

  5. Your menu sounds wonderful and delicious! Happy Thanksgiving to your family – and on this Thanksgiving, we’re grateful to folks like Brad for their service to our country so that we can be free and safe. I’m sure this is such a bittersweet day for you. All best, always.

  6. We have a small family too but my parents always cook so much food. And I absolutely love it. Every year we try and and do something a little different just to keep things interesting but it’s a fun day of cooking and just being together as family. That’s one thing I love about the holidays, we all get a chance to stop and just be together without any other worries or obligations.
