To E Read or not to E Read…. that is the question….

thinking gifThis is a funny topic for me as I am truly a book girl.  And by book…. I mean BOOK.  You know… sheets of paper with words on them all wrapped in a gorgeous cover….  old school.  That’s me.

There is a girl in my book club who has a Kindle.  I have walked her through my home library pointing out the book shelves I love and all that they hold…. my treasures…. “See,” I tell her.  “If I had a reader like this, what would be on my shelves?”

Yet… as time has went on…. I see them …. yes – THEM.  E Readers.  They are at the YMCA where I work out.  As I struggle to turn pages on my book while on the treadmill, the girl next to me runs and looks thinkingat her E Reader.  When no ones looking I ask her, “Do you like this form of reading?”

“Oh Yes,” she says.  “I love it and I can take it anywhere.”

I do travel a lot.  Road trips, planes a couple times a year.  I have been in situatuations where I am looking for a particular book and can not find it.  Or I have read everything I brought with me.  And of course there is the weight/space factor.  My book take up a nice portion of my suitcase.

idea smileySo…if I were to get an E Reader, being a die hard books to the end girl…. it would need to do all the things I wish my books could do.  It would need to capture improtant facts so when reviewing I could easily find these passages again.  It would need to look up words for me that I did not know in a quick and easy manner.  Easy to read… many MANY books to choose from…. light weight, easy to travel with, price not too scary….I may be able to be persuaded to take an E Reader for a spin.

  1. If I were to get an ereader, it would not stop me from buying books and filling up my shelves.

also, that first smiley face reminds me of the yellow peanut M&M from the commercial. just sayin’.

  2. I keep thinking that if I got an ereader, all of my books would be jealous. And they would sit there, looking at me with all of their beautiful colors and wonderful texture and wonder what they did wrong. But it’s just so tempting!

  3. I was flying yesterday and peering at the e-readers. I envy that they can bring so many books with them-but I am a book girl. I have never struck up a conversation about what is on their e-reader-but oftentimes find myself peeping to read the cover of a book someone is reading.

  4. What we need to do is find out how to get “review” copies of the e-readers! You know…take em’ for a spin and let our readers know what we think…hmmmmm….brain working…gears creaking….

  5. I have a Kindle (version 2) and it does what you mentioned you need an ereader to do. I still read paper books (hard cover as well as paper back) but this is another way for me to read. I still buy paperbacks at Costco (because I have NO willpower) but for traveling – my K2 is awesome. I have 70 books on it right now. Many were free but I’ve bought some best-sellers (when the price reached $9.99).

I love that the Kindle doesn’t have a back light. It’s like a book – you need a lamp or daylight to read it. BUT your eyes won’t tire when reading it.

Also, I’ve noticed some publishers ARE sending e-copies for review (haven’t seen one for a Kindle yet, though).

Good luck finding the right ereader for you.

  6. I feel exactly the same as you. I’m not sure how I feel about e-books. It’s certainly much better for the environment but I love the touch and smell and feel of having a book in your hand. It’s a tricky one.

  7. I have thought about these ereaders. I have not seen many around my area, yet I am not a traveler. I am still a hard core book (paper) person. I am still stuck in the mind set of books, paper. I am not quite ready to jump to the computer books. The screens irritate me after looking at one all day, and I would probably break it, where a book I can’t break as easily. I also like to flag pages as I read so I can go back to them if I have any questions on what I am reading.

Oh well, maybe someday I wont even have a choose and will have to catch up with the rest of the world.

  8. I can’t do e-readers! I really can’t! I stare at an electronic screen at least 8 hours or more a day and I think that’s enough! I love my books. I love filling up bins and shelves with my books. I love looking at the covers and reading the back. No e-readers here. Thanks.

I understand the paper thing for the environment. But I’ve noticed some books are starting to print on earth friendly paper. If all books were like that, that would be excellent.

  9. Do E-readers have that old musty smell? Call me old fashioned, but the smell of library books is something that brings back many fond memories for me. I love holding a book and touching the pages.

However, I don’t enjoy the small mass market books — the paper is too course and the type is usually too dark and they are awkward to hold.

  10. I am also a book person, but I am not blind to the advantages of e-readers. I don’t know, perhaps some day… But for now, I’m satisfied with my out-of-fashion hardcovers and paperbacks!!! 🙂

  11. Put me solidly in the book side of things in this discussion! But (and there’s always one of those), I have a friend who commutes by train to work (almost an hour) and is able to read newspapers as well as catch up on books in a portable form.

  12. I personally think that a physical book is the only way to go. I love flipping the pages and the feel of a book-especially when I turn the last page.

  13. I love books! I love the feel of them, the smell of them, and the look of them on my shelves! I am not a big fan of reading a story on a screen.
I love reading a real page turner! Could a book still be referred to as a page turner, if you never actually have to turn a page??
