The Anniversary by Alex Finlay

May 1st 1992: Seventeen-year-old popular teen beauty, Jules Delaney, survives an attack by what has come to be known as the Mayday Killer, a serial killer who focuses on small Midwest towns annually on May 1st. Telling no one of her attack, wondering what made her so lucky to survive, and living with the trauma and survivor’s guilt takes its toll.

On this same night, in the same town, seventeen-year-old Quinn Riley attempts to break up a fight that nearly kills someone and lands him in jail (juvenile detention) until he turns 18.

The Mayday killer continues to kill every May 1st.

The following year, Jules is discovered by a modeling agency and throws herself into her career, but uses alcohol and drugs to mask the terror and shame of her past. During this same time, Quinn is released and enlists in the Army, survives an attack, is released due to his injuries, and becomes a Private Investigator in Omaha.

Throughout the years, Jules and Quinn continue to run into one another, wth secrets unraveling as another May 1st approaches – the truth is closer than they know.

This is a twisty good read with a lot going on, and for me, that may have been its downfall. Perhaps I listened to this at the wrong time – OR perhaps this one is better to be read, as there is a lot (IMO) to keep track of). I felt a little lost in all of it.
