Leaving Carolina by Tamara Leigh

aa

A  look at family secrets and colorful characters that leave you with an important reminder…  ~ Sheila

Piper Wick left her hometown of Pickwick, North Carolina, twelve years ago, shook the dust off her feet, ditched her drawl and her family name, and made a new life for herself as a high-powered public relations consultant in LA. She’s even “engaged to be engaged” to the picture-perfect U.S. Congressman Grant Spangler.

Now all of Piper’s hard-won happiness is threatened by a reclusive uncle’s bout of conscience. In the wake of a health scare, Uncle Obadiah Pickwick has decided to change his will, leaving money to make amends for four generations’ worth of family misdeeds. But that will reveal all the Pickwicks’ secrets, including Piper’s.

Though Piper arrives in Pickwick primed for battle, she is unprepared for Uncle Obe’s rugged, blue-eyed gardener. So just who is Axel Smith? Why does he think making amends is more than just making restitution? And why, oh why, can’t she stay on task? With the Lord’s help, Piper is about to discover that although good PR might smooth things over, only the truth will set her free.

My Thoughts…

I have not read Tamara Leigh before this book and found her characters to have life breathed into them which I really like.  Characters that I can relate to, and find them to be real is always a plus and I enjoyed how Tamara took many of her characters and made them enjoyable to get to know.

The topic centered around family secrets was another plus.  I like to read about how families deal with things they try to bury in their past, especially when it comes in a Christian format such as this one.  I for one find great comfort in letting go of the past and moving on with a sense of known forgiveness and an honest approach to where I have been.  A light easy read that I enjoyed.

What about Tamara Leigh?aa

Tamara Leigh is the best-selling author of twelve novels, including award-winning “Splitting Harriet” (2008 ACFW “Book of the Year”), “Faking Grace” and “Leaving Carolina” the first book in her new “Southern Discomfort” series. What Matters Most: Diary Of A Teenage Girl by Melody Carlson

aa

A quick written, quick witted book about a teenage girl… loved the green tips!  ~ Sheila

Sixteen-year-old Maya Stark has a lot to sort through. She could graduate from high school early if she wants to. She’s considering it, especially when popular cheerleader Vanessa Hartman decides to make her life miserable–and Maya’s ex-boyfriend Dominic gets the wrong idea about everything.

To complicate matters even more, Maya’s mother will be released from prison soon, and she’ll want Maya to live with her again. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. And when Maya plays her dad’s old acoustic guitar in front of an audience, she discovers talents and opportunities she never expected. Faced with new options, Maya must choose between a “normal” life and a glamorous one. Ultimately, she has to figure out what matters most.

My Thoughts:

This was a fun, quick read.  I like how it is written in a journal type format.  It seemed to fit perfectly for Maya and brought me back to my team years when I too journaled my days (of course then we called it a diary).  😉

I found the book to be unique with Maya’s Green Tips Of The Day.  Loved it.  Going into this read I did not know this was the third in a series called Diary Of A Teenage Girl.  What I have missed is A Not So Simple Life and Its A Green Thing.  Two books that if I came across them, I would not pass up.

Faith N Fiction Saturday

Faith_Fiction2

My Friend Amy has this wonderful weekly meme that just recently came back into play after a little time off due to life business.  I can so relate to that!  🙂  So today I anxiously head over to Amy’s Blog to see what question she will post for us to ponder over today and she asks this:

Today’s Question

We mostly talk about Christian fiction during Faith’n’Fiction Saturday but I’m curious if you have ever read fiction of other faiths. I am not aware of a lot of fiction of other faiths like I am about Christian fiction, so this is a good time to chime in with anything you’ve read! If you are of another faith, maybe you can chime in and tell us about some options.

Honestly… I had to think on this one… have I read a fiction read on other faiths?  I checked my book shelves and found that I had:

Kabul Beauty School (ISLAM) but it is non fiction

Reading Lolita in Tehran (ISLAM) also non fiction

I looked on line and was surprised that I did not really find any fiction reads in other faiths other than a few that were written for children.  Perhaps I was looking in the wrong areas?

GAH! I think I am coming up empty.  If any of you have read any faith and fiction reads that are not based on the Christina Faith, please stop over to My Friend Amy’s and add your link and/or your comments.

Sir Dalton and The Shadow Heart (book 3) by Chuck Black

This book dropped me into a battle field… one that I am reminded as I read this that we continue to fight daily…  ~Sheila

sir daltonSir Dalton, a knight in training, seems to have everything going for him. Young, well-liked, and a natural leader, he has earned the respect and admiration of his fellow knights, and especially the beautiful Lady Brynn.

But something is amiss at the training camp. Their new trainer is popular but lacks the passion to inspire them to true service to the King and the Prince. Besides this, the knights are too busy enjoying a season of good times to be concerned with a disturbing report that many of their fellow Knights have mysteriously vanished.

When Sir Dalton is sent on a mission, he encounters strange attacks, especially when he is alone. As his commitment wanes, the attacks grow in intensity until he is captured by Lord Drox, a massive Shadow Warrior. Bruised and beaten, Dalton refuses to submit to evil and initiates a daring escape with only one of two outcomes-life or death. But what will become of the hundreds of knights he’ll leave behind? In a kingdom of peril, Dalton thinks he is on his own, but two faithful friends have not abandoned him, and neither has a strange old hermit who seems to know much about the Prince. But can Dalton face the evil Shadow Warrior again and survive?

Author bio.: chuck

Chuck and his wife, Andrea, homeschool their six children and have a family music ministry that travels throughout the region. He is the author of nine novels, has been published in The Old Schoolhouse e-zine, and has received praise from parents across the country for his unique approach to telling biblical truths. Chuck and his family live in Williston, North Dakota.

armorMy Thoughts:

I am coming into this read not having read the first or second book.  Truly written in a good VS. evil style right from the early pages I felt as though I was playing catch up on a story that had begun two books ago.  While this book does stand on its own, if I were to have had time, I would have started with book 1 and went from there working my way to this book in order to just pick up on the flow of Chuck Black’s writing style.  I have to say that the introduction in the book to the Knights of Arrethtrae was very helpful!)

In this book Sir Dalton is in training to be a knight and when he is sent on a mission he finds when he is alone he is being attacked.  (I really love this metaphor in the book and actually paused a bit to think how true this can be…  we are more easily attacked when we are separated from others.)

A likable YA read, I think Sir Dalton makes a wonderful character that kids (I am thinking boys ages 7-13) will relate to.  The book covers great Christian subject matter in a way that reads like the story of knighthood and at the same time great questions are wove into the words…  Sir Dalton

Why should we believe?

What do we do with doubt?

Who can save him?

Sir Dalton continues his training through the book and again I am thinking if my boys were younger they would have enjoyed these books.   A quick read for me….  I was excited to get a bit of a CS Lewis feel to this read.  I think this book would be a great discussion book to review with your child about the power of good and evil and the wonders of a strong spirit.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller

1

Reading this book was like having Donald in my living room having a great conversation about life.  Invite this book over for coffee.  ~ Sheila

Years after writing his best-selling memoir, Donald Miller went into a funk and spent months sleeping in and avoiding his publisher. One story had ended, and Don was unsure how to start another.

But he gets rescued by two movie producers who want to make a movie based on his memoir. When they start fictionalizing Don’s life for film–changing a meandering memoir into a structured narrative–the real-life Don starts a journey to edit his actual life into a better story. A Million Miles in a Thousand Years details that journey and challenges readers to reconsider what they strive for in life. It shows how to get a second chance at life the first time around.

My Thoughts: I read Blue Like jazz by Donald Miller quite some time ago and really enjoyed his insight.  I find myself in that same place again… Donald Miller writes in my language.  In a down to earth, fun way… I read this book in one sitting because putting it down was not an option.  Because reading A Million Miles in a Thousand Years was like having Donald Miller over to my home where we sat and we talked.  This reads like a conversation.  A really good conversation.

Opening this book and reading the opening sentences, “The saddest thing about life is you don’t remember half of it.  You dont even remember half of it.  Not even a tiny percentage…”  Right away that hit home for me.  Occasionally something or someone will trigger this far away deeply buried memory where I will suddenly recall a tiny bit of a different season in my life.  Not only does it surprise me how easily it is to forget moments of your life that were once a very important part of who you were… but I also find it scary.

In this book Donald works on making changes to “his story” the story we will all someday share with God.  In reading this book… I knew, I too wanted a better story.  Once again Donald floors me with his honest look at his own life and in a humorous manner he once again shows how messy our lives are and that’s ok.

A win for Donald Miller and for me.  A read that goes on the keeper shelf to be read again and again.  This book hits the book stores today.  I recommend this as a must read for 2009.

If God Is Good by Randy Alcorn

Randy Alcorn is an author I never pass up a chance to read…. this book is another great example of why that is…

Sheila

if god is goodEvery one of us will experience suffering. Many of us are experiencing it now. As we have seen in recent years, evil is real in our world, present and close to each one of us.

In such difficult times, suffering and evil beg questions about God–Why would an all-good and all-powerful God create a world full of evil and suffering? And then, how can there be a God if suffering and evil exist?

These are ancient questions, but also modern ones as well. Atheists such as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and even former believers like Bart Ehrman answer the question simply: The existence of suffering and evil proves there is no God.

In this captivating new book, best-selling author Randy Alcorn challenges the logic of disbelief, and brings a fresh, realistic, and thoroughly biblical insight to the issues these important questions raise.

Alcorn offers insights from his conversations with men and women whose lives have been torn apart by suffering, and yet whose faith in God burns brighter than ever. He reveals the big picture of who God is and what God is doing in the world–now and forever. And he equips you to share your faith more clearly and genuinely in this world of pain and fear.

As he did in his best-selling book, Heaven, Randy Alcorn delves deep into a profound subject, and through compelling stories, provocative questions and answers, and keen biblical understanding, he brings assurance and hope to all.

Author Bio:randy

Randy Alcorn is the founder and director of Eternal Perspectives Ministries and a bestselling author. His novels include Deadline, Dominion, Edge of Eternity, Lord Foulgrin’s Letters, The Ishbane Conspiracy, and the Gold Medallion winner, Safely Home. He has written eighteen nonfiction books as well, including Heaven, The Treasure Principle, The Purity Principle, and The Grace and Truth Paradox. Randy and his wife, Nanci, live in Oregon and have two married daughters and four grandsons.

My Thoughts:

I am a huge Randy Alcorn fan.  I have read (I think) every book he has written.  I find him to be down to earth and yet, has a wonderful faith quality to him that I always get a different perspective on how to look at things.  This book, If God is Good, of course, is no exception.

Reading through Randy’s book he once again astounds me on the level of research he puts into his work… yet I don’t feel like I am reading a heavy book.  Randy – truly has a way with words.  Using scripture and personal life stories, I find this book to be one I can turn to again and again…

She Still Calls Me Daddy by Robert Wolgemuth

A beautiful book that would make a lovely gift for the father of the bride…  ~ Sheila

she still calls me daddyBabies come in two kinds-boys and girls. We know that going into parenthood. Still, most dads get a little nervous when the nurse places in their arms a tiny bundle. They can relate to boys…football, toy trains, etc. A girl, on the other hand…well let’s be honest. What in the world does a father do when he’s invited for imaginary tea? Robert Wolgemuth puts these anxieties to rest, relating all the wonderful times that are waiting to be hand with a special little lady-your daughter. He focuses on what works, like “reading riddle books” and tenderness; and what doesn’t, like comparing her to other girls and harsh punishment. Best of all, this is a book about making an investment in the life of a little girl who, some day, will become one of her daddy’s closeset friends.

My Thoughts:  This was a different read for me for several reasons.  One it is written for a father.  I am not a father.  It is about fathers and daughters.  I also do not have any daughters.

What is amazing about a book like this is that I dont have to be a father or have daughters to appreciate what Robert Wolgemuth is writing about here.   In She Still Calls Me Daddy, Robert really brings his own personal stories to life here, as he shares with great passion and faith about having daughters, raising daughters, and then letting them go.  I really enjoyed this book and as someone who never had the opportunity to have my father walk me down the aisle or have my dad meet my husband… it was bittersweet as to a relationship we could have had.

I think this book would make a wonderful gift for the father who is soon giving away his daughter.

You Were Born For This by Bruce Wilkinson w/ Giveaway!

Reading this book – I ask myself, how many miracles sent my way do I miss?  How many opportunities have I missed when  I felt a need to say something and didn’t?  ‘You Were Born For This’ was a great reminder.  ~  Sheila

Summary

His New York Times phenomenon The Prayer of Jabez changed how millions pray. Now Bruce Wilkinson wants to change what they do next.

Anyone can do a good deed, but some good works can only happen by a direct intervention from God. Around the world these acts are called miracles—not that even religious people expect to see one any time soon. But what would happen if millions of ordinary people walked out each morning expecting God to deliver a miracle through them to a person in need? You Were Born for This starts with the dramatic premise that everyone at all times is in need of a miracle, and that God is ready to meet those needs supernaturally through ordinary people who are willing to learn the “protocol of heaven.”

In the straightforward, story-driven, highly motivating style for which he is known, Wilkinson describes how anyone can be a “Delivery Guy” from heaven in such universally significant arenas of life as finances, practical help, relationships, purpose, and spiritual growth.

Author Bios:

One of the world’s foremost Christian teachers, Bruce Wilkinson is best known as the author of the New York Times #1 bestseller The Prayer of Jabez. He is also the author of numerous other bestsellers, including A Life God Rewards, Secrets of the Vine, and The Dream Giver. Over the past three decades, Wilkinson has founded several global initiatives, including organizations that recruited and trained thousands of Americans to address hunger, AIDS, and poverty in Africa. Bruce and his wife, Darlene, have three children and six grandchildren. They live outside Atlanta.

David Kopp has collaborated with Bruce Wilkinson on over a dozen bestselling books, including The Prayer of Jabez. He is an editor and writer living in Colorado.

My Thoughts:

Many years ago I had read The Prayer of Jabez and really liked how Wilkinson put things into perspective.  Now here I

am again with another amazing book by Wilkinson sitting next to me as I type.  While what Bruce is saying is to me – common sense… apparently it needs to be said as I for one tend to forget that we are to be constantly looking for ways to serve Him… ways to do His work here on earth and yet days go by where I dont go the extra few steps to talk to that neighbor out watering her flowers or the person I know is going to want to talk and talk and I just do not have (or take) the time to listen.  *OUCH!*

There are topics in this book that I can and will use for my team training I am currently doing for our Fall Honduras Mission.  I love the term “Intentional Miracle Workers.”  This book really was a great read for me and a definite keeper for the book shelves.  This is one I can refer to time and again.

Distant Thunder by Jimmy Root

What started as an uncertain read for me turned into a powerful look into a future that kept the pages turning long into the night!  ~  Sheila

Distant ThunderThe unthinkable has happened. Tactical nuclear weapons have fallen into the hands of terrorists, and both the United States and Israel have been targeted. The Biblical prophecies are TRUE and the march toward the apocalypse us unstoppable.
Moshe Eldan is a “Lightning Driver”, the self-described vernacular of  an  elite  group  of
Israeli F-16 fighter pilots. It is his job to protect and defend his beleaguered country on a daily basis, but not even Moshe sees what is coming. Attacks along the Lebanese border, by Hizbollah fighters, is on the increase, but it’s only a diversion from the greater danger. Iran has nuclear weapons, and they plan to use them. Join Moshe as he desperately attempts to stop the most deadly terrorist attack in history. His only hope is found in beginning a new mission, one that will take him straight toward an encounter with the Truth.
Tyler Dempsey is a suburban Kansas City pastor, just trying to work through the grief of losing his little brother to the war in Iraq. His world is jolted by new revelations of old, Bible prophecies. But when he takes it to his apathatic congregation, trouble meets him head on in the form of a brewing church conflict. Unknown to them all, the United States, and specifically Kansas City, are in the sights of vicious killers bent on nothing less than bringing the greatest nation on the planet to its knees. Ty can see it coming. Can you?
Strap in tight as Moshe and Ty are strangely connected in this first book of the “Lightning Chronicles Trilogy.”  You will never forget what the Bible says is about to happen!

My Thoughts: This one was a bit of a stretch for me… I am not a nuclear, blow up the world,  terrorist threat, type of reader.  Yet, when I was offered this book to review…. I couldn’t think of a good reason to pass.  There were elements of the book that spoke to me:

Biblical Prophesies (I have a friend who wrote a book along these lines a few years back and I loved it!)

A Pastor dealing with grief ( it is a good story line – I always like to read how Pastors react when tragedy hits their own home… I think fictional or otherwise – it does show a Pastors true character)

This book surprised me and once again I got a good lesson in judging books by their covers.  I was wrong to think I would not enjoy this read.  I actually did.  The characters were well developed and the relationship that develops between Pastor Ty Dempsey and Moshe Elden (fighter pilot) is an interesting way to put together this book. I found myself quickly reading through the pages in an intensity that matched the plot… I had to know what would happen next.  This book kept me reading late into the night.

A book about Terrorists, Nuclear devices, and a Grieving Pastor?  Oh my!  I can not wait to get my hands on book two in the Lightning Chronicle Series!

North or Be Eaten by Andrew Peterson with a Double Giveaway!

North or be eaten

I found myself entangled in the pages of a Narnia like world… captured by the adventure that can only come from a well written read…  ~ Sheila

This giveaway is now closed

Janner, Tink, and Leeli Igiby thought they were normal children with normal lives and a normal past. But now they know they’re really the Lost Jewels of Anniera, heirs to a legendary kingdom across the sea, and suddenly everyone wants to kill them.

Their escape brings readers to the very brink of Fingap Falls, over the Stony Mountains, and across the Ice Prairies, while villains galore try to stop the Igibys permanently. Fearsome toothy cows and horned hounds return, along with new dangers: a mad man running a fork factory, a den of rockroaches, and majestic talking sea dragons.

Andrew Peterson’s lovable characters create what FantasyBookCritic.com says made Book One “one of the best fantasy novels in a very long time,” and Book Two contains even more thrills, exploring “themes universal in nature, ranging from the classic good versus evil, to the importance of family, and burdens of responsibility.”

My Thoughts:  It took me  a ways into the book to finally capture the flow of this read.  I wonder if part of that is due to the fact that I had not read book one – On The Edge Of The Dark Of Darkness.  I did not even know this was a sequal until after I had begun reading….

Once the book grabbed hold of me – I flew through the pages picking up elements that I loved about Narnia.  This book is well written with elements that could keep me guessing.  I have to admit this was not as easy a read as I found the Narnia books to be.  I struggled in points keeping track of all the action and what and the where…  I think young 8 – 13 year olds may enjoy this very much…. I get the impression it would really be their thing.

On this particular book I goofed and wound up on two different blog tours with it.  Due to this I have two books to giveaway.  (Remember Christmas is coming – this would make a wonderful gift!)
