Too Many Visitors For One Little House by Susan Chodakiewitz

Laugh out loud goodness in the pages of this delightful read about opening your heart… and even your home.  ~ Sheila

The neighbors of El Camino Street did not like pets.  They did not like kids.  They did not like people with big families.  They never had any guests and spent their day cleaning their houses, tending their gardens, and snoozing on their porches.

And so our story begins!  I turned the pages of this delightful book enjoying the wonderful illustrations of the people of El Camino Street.  When the new family moved in – a mom, a dad, three kids, and a fish- the neighbors kept an eye out for trouble…. and all was fine, until the visitors arrived.

And with every turn of the page more family arrives much to their neighbors dismay… they label each visitor from the noisy teenagers, to the off her rocker Grandma…. this book really shows how people can judge others before they really even know them.

I think this would be a wonderful read for children to discuss learning to accept others even if they are different from ourselves.  Who knows… you just might experience something incredible and new!

Charlie and Mama Kyna by Diana Rumjahn

Being friends with a frog, a lion, and a giraffe has never been more fun!  ~  Sheila

Charlie and Mama Kyna is a sweet tale of three friends – Charlie, a frog, Leo, a lion and Joe, a giraffe – who embark on a journey to find a good home. In this delightful children’s picture book written by Diana Rumjahn, we are all taken on an enchanting journey in which Charlie, “a sweet green frog with a red bow tie with white polka dots,” finds Leo and Joe sitting in an orange tent in front of Mrs. Cupcake’s Bakery.  Soon they tire of living out of a tent and not having a real home, so Charlie takes them back to his house in which he had run away from for breaking his mother’s vase and not wanting to get in trouble over it.  The three form a bond as they travel through creeks and over hills on their way to Charlie’s mother’s house.  Instead of being upset over the vase, Charlie’s mother is extremely happy to have him home again and welcomes his new friends into her home.

The more childrens books I read the more I really appreciate them.  In this book, Charle and Mama Kyna, I am introduced to three lovable characters that your young kids are going to love.  A wonderful story about the importance of forgiveness and friendship.  The words to this book roll off your tongue and just make it a fun read! I loved the beautiful illustrations of this book I would believe to be be an anytime favorite!

Morning Meanderings…

This morning I am Coffee Cup free.  Yup.  Don’t worry…. after 8:30 I will be back with Coffee and all will be right with the world again.  🙂

A friend of mine had a baby 6 weeks ago and she and I had done weight watchers together before her pregnancy.  Today she is starting up again and I am a life time member but like to hold myself in check, so I will be going with her.  I am a little nervous for this initial weigh in as I am usually a pretty good eater but with the changes to our life in mid September when Chance came to stay with us, my eating habits changed and so did my work out schedule…. or lack there of.  🙂  Honduras is always impossible to eat right as well as wow do I love the food they make there and really do not have any control over what we are served…. go with the flow.  Anyway – this makes my first time on the scale in about 2 months.  Yipes!

On a  book note –  I found a link yesterday to a sight where you can download 100 free audio books.  I wasn’t an audio fan until this year when I had quite a bit of car time and then discovered I love them!  Finally a way to read and drive at the same time!  AWESOME!  I am a huge fan and haven’t looked into these yet but passing the info on to any of you who may be interested.  I usually prefer a background book over background music.

And my final morning note is last night I had an hour long conversation with the author of Jantsen’s Gift, Pam Cope.  I had requested an interview by email with her regarding the book and she responded saying she would rather do a phone interview.  How fun!  I think she interviewed me as much as I interviewed her!  Watch for that post coming up in the next few days here.

Later – I have book reviews (of course) and hopefully the Thursday Word Balderdash will make its appearance as well!  Have a super great day!

Novel Destinations by Shannon McKenna Schmidt and Joni Rendon

This book allows you to jump inside the pages of other books…  for me a dream come true!  ~ Sheila

It’s often said that a good book takes us somewhere we’ve never been before, and here’s the proof: a book-lover’s Baedeker to more than 500 literary locales across the United States and Europe. Novel Destinations invites readers to follow in the footsteps of much-loved authors, discover the scenes that sparked their imaginations, glimpse the lives they led, and share a bit of the experiences they transformed so eloquently into print. If you’re looking to indulge in literary adventure, you’ll find all the inspiration and information you need here, along with behind-the-scenes stories such as these:

After Ernest Hemingway survived two near-fatal plane crashes during an African safari, he perused his obituaries and sipped champagne on a canal-side terrace in Venice.

Washington Irving’s wisteria-draped cottage in the Hudson Valley was once occupied by members of the Van Tassel family, immortalized in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

A mysterious incident at a stone tower near Dublin made such a vivid impression on James Joyce that he drew on it for the opening scene of Ulysses.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle consulted on the mystery of Agatha Christie’s 1926 disappearance before she resurfaced under an assumed name in northern England.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables was inspired by a seaside manse in Salem, Massachusetts, infamous witch trials in which his ancestor played a role.

In My Opinion:

The Steinbeck House, Salinas California
The Steinbeck House, Salinas, California

I seriously wanted to crawl inside this book and go!  I discovered this book on Amazon a while ago and had to have it.  I was curious in my travels throughout the years might I have been unknowingly close to an incredible literary landmark?  Might I have passed by where Walt Whitman once dined, or Ralph Waldo Emerson walked his dog (if he had a dog…). How about Checking into the actual hotel room at the Sun Valley Lodge in Idaho where Hemingway penned For Whom the Bell Tolls, or knocking back a “Papa Dobles” cocktail (invented by the writer himself) at Sloppy Joe’s in Key West, FL?  The thought of any of these gives my goose bumps!

I found the closest to me in this book would be Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald who was born on Summit Ave in St Paul, Minnesota.  There is a walking tour of landmarks associated with the writer and his works.  Sinclair Lewes was born in Sauk Centre MN where he wrote about his 1920 best seller, Main Street.

A Hemngway Hangout, Key West, Florida

This book covers final resting places, to the bars that the likes of Mark Twain hung out in.  From childhood homes, to the big screen where a travel to England and see the Chateau House (where the exterior shots of the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice were shot) open daily mid March thru December.

I adored everything about this book.  I enjoyed reading it as informative as well as a road map to places to see!  This one is a keeper, a must take along for road trips and beyond!

Have you been to any famous author spots or places mentioned in books?

I purchased my copy of this book off Amazon

Morning Meanderings…

There are some mornings when I sit here with Coffee Cup and seriously have to rack my brain for something remotely interesting to say…  maybe I didn’t have time to read any blogs so I have no great books to direct you too and maybe I have nothing real exciting going on in my life….

Today – is not that day!

In fact, I knew yesterday evening what I wanted to do for today’s post and have been really excited to share it!  Actually I have two things to chat up this morning (Go Caffeine adrenaline go!!!).  First, I had wandered over to Petty Witters blog, Pen and Paper, and found a post that says she has crossed over the 500 visitors mark!  YEAH!  The funny thing is, she thinks I was the 500th visitor!  LOL, I am just happy for her and excited to see her blog grow.  You should check it out… she does great reviews and always posts funny things out of the newspaper or thoughts that crack me up.  Stop in today and congratulate her!

Secondly…. I was over visiting Vera at Luxury Reading yesterday and when commenting on a recent review she had up, I seen the comment above mine said that she wished there was such a thing as a spoiler button so she could see what happens in the book…. and that got me thinking…..

How many times have I wanted to share more in a book review and couldn’t for fear of spoiling a great plot for a potential reader?  I am really careful in my reviews to not reveal too much but the real me behind the keyboard (much like the Wizard of Oz) is shouting, “Oh my gosh I really want to talk about page 142!!!”

So….  full credit for the idea  going to the commenter of the Luxury Reading post, I have created a spoiler button.  Uh huh.  I did.

Want to see it?

Want to push it?  Go ahead.  I will wait.  🙂  ……………………

I am not going to use it all the time…. I wouldn’t want to abuse it!  I am thinking for those reviews when I want to say so much more.  The button will take myself and those of us who have already read the book, to a safe area where we can discuss it openly without spoiling any of it for those who have not read it.

Have a great morning all and I appreciate all your comments on whatever craziness I have going on over here!

Author Chat with Jewell R. Powell

Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to post my review of Marriage 101 by Jewell R. Powell.  I really enjoyed her insight into marriage and the book was a pleasure to read.  I asked Jewell if she would have a little time to join me here at One Person’s Journey Through Books and share a little bit about her book with us.

She said yes.  Please warmly welcome, Jewell R. Powell.

Jewell, I am so excited to have you here.  I enjoyed reading your book and found a couple…. errr, maybe more, things that I could apply into my own marriage.   What are some of the unrealistic expectations couples have today about marriage?

Jewell: Thank you Sheila, my answer to that question would be:

  • #1 Couples who are happy in their marriages, don’t have problems.
  • #2 Your spouse should be perfect with no imperfections.
  • #3 What we see on TV, read in fictional books and see in movies regarding relationships are real.
  • #4 Marriage should be easy, it shouldn’t require so much work.

What advice would you give to  husbands to improve their marriage?

Jewell: My husband says, “tell them not to think about the negative things going on in their marriage or else they will be angry most of the time.” I say, men must know they are ultimately responsible for the failure and/or success of their family. Men need to understand they are not only responsible to be head of their family but they are directly accountable to Christ. This enables him to get in position to hear directly from God concerning the will of God for their family. Lewis says that when we separated, although I was praying to God for our marriage, he was too.  The reconciliation would have not taken place, if he also wasn’t seeking God as to his family and what He should do.

What advice do you have for wives to improve their marriage?

Jewell: The biggest lesson for me was how I can honor God through my marriage. God taught me that to honor Him, I was to honor Lewis. Also, God created men with the need for respect from his wife, it’s the top of his list and he needs it almost as much as he needs air to breathe. When we value and respect someone, we invest ourselves in their care & and take the time to build up their feelings of self-worth. A man who doesn’t receive respect from his wife is a man who begins to deteriorate and so will the relationship. The kind of love & respect God is calling wives to have for their husbands is sacrificial and unconditional.

That’ s good advice.  I have read that before that while women find the most important thing is to feel loved, to a man the most important thing is to be respected.  What would you say to that person who is literally at the end of their rope…. and can’t do it anymore?

Jewell: I was at that point so I completely understand. I will say what someone said to me, DON”T GIVE UP! God says, I know the plans I have toward you they are good and not evil to give you an expected end.

I must admit that my struggle was me concentrating on what he was doing or was not doing that I didn’t like. I learned to stop looking at him and focus on the changes I needed to make within me to be a better wife. It took a lot of work! We all want better marriages but no one is willing to change and there lies the problem. So the question to them, Are you willing to change?

(NOTE: I am not speaking to the one who is going through physical abuse)

How can spouses put the spark back in their marriage?

Jewell: It doesn’t take money or any grand gesture such as taking a Hawaiian vacation.  Start small, eat dinner by candlelight. Have a picnic in the middle of the living room floor. Email an e card or go for a walk. Talk kindly to one another.  In the back of Marriage 101 and on the website (www.marriage101.us), I have a list of 30 love deposits to get you started.

That’s a good idea Jewell!  I will check that out on your website.  Is their one biblical verse that you cling too?

Jewell: Isaiah 55:8-11 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts…” I have realized, as a Christian, that God expects me (us) to do things that really don’t make sense. I must say that it is not my favorite scripture but it helps me to stay focus – to do the right thing.

Jewell, this book is so timely and well written, are their any plans for any more books in your future?

Jewell: I have a four (4) book mini-series coming out in December 2009 that covers marriage topics we all face: Sex & Intimacy, Communication, Parenting, and Finance. In addition, there is a Marriage 101 Marriage Enrichment and Premarital Curriculum.

Thank you Jewell so much for taking the time to sit and chat with us today.  Readers, please take time to read the Review of Marriage 101 and check out the “Date Package Giveaway” being offered to one lucky commenter.

The Secret Of Joy by Melissa Senate

Melissa Senate’s book goes on sale today!  A win for chick lit!  ~ Sheila

Rebecca Strand, a 28-year-old New York City paralegal in a divorce mediation firm, is shocked when her dying father confesses his long-ago affair–and the baby he’d turned his back on. This fragile connection to 26-year-old half-sister Joy Joyhawk is all Rebecca has left of family. And so with her lawyer boyfriend’s protests ringing in her ears (“She’s just going to want her share of his million-dollar estate!”), Rebecca drives to Wiscasset, Maine, with the 26 letters her father wrote to Joy (but never sent) every year on herbirthday. Having no idea what to expect, Rebecca knocks on Joy Jayhawk’s door.
Turns out Joy, the separated mother of a little boy (Rebecca has a nephew too!), isn’t very interested in the “father” who turned his back on her existence from day one–or her “sister.” But Rebecca is so determined to establish family bonds with Joy that she doesn’t go home . . . and finds herself being welcomed into small life by some very loveable, quirky characters, including the Divorced Ladies Club of Wiscasset and a sexy carpenter named Theo . . .

In My Opinion:

Two thumbs up!  I have read a lot of heavier books lately and this one came in my hands at just the right time.  The Secret of Joy made me smile.  I wanted to go hang out in Maine with these characters, I really did!

Rebecca comes in as the main character and when Joy comes in to her life as the sister she never knew existed until after her dads passing, I am pleasantly surprised on what Joy adds to the book.  It is as if the entrance of Joy, was a gift from Rebecca’s father to let her know that there are other options than getting married just so you dont feel alone.  Not settling I think is a wonderful lesson in the book and author Melissa Senate weaves that well into the story.

Good strong likable characters are always a plus for me and I found then here between the pages of a book called The Secret Of Joy.

About Author Melissa Senate

Melissa Senate is the author of eight novels, including the bestselling See Jane Date, which was made into an ABC Family TV movie and has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide. Morning Meanderings…

Morning all!  🙂  I feel pretty good today!  I think I have battled and won the cold/sinus/ bug thing that was plaguing me for the last week….  (of course the lower energy sit around time helped my reading….LOL)

Yesterday I made my way back into the gym and that felt great to make that step to get back on track.  Now I just need to keep on going….  I know my goals… now I need to get there 🙂

This morning I got up at 7, still a little later than I usually do, and put the Coffee on and sat down to write my morning post for the day and the rest of a review that will go up today as well.  Of course, instead I read comments and started blog hopping and well…. you know how it goes.

I found myself over at Esme’s Chocolate and Croissants Blog and seen a review that she had written for a book called The Recipe Club by Andrea Israel and Nancy Garfinkel.  I started to read her review and about 3/4 of the way through her post I am tearing up.  It sounds wonderful!  I am shocked at how much I am liking what I am reading and… well… I could tell you what it is about, but I would rather you stop over to Chocolate and Croissants and read it for yourself.  I am adding this one to my wish list.

Today I have a pretty full day, I work 9 – 2 and then my plan is to tan, pick up my Honduras picture cd’s at Wal-Mart, work out with my friend Heidi and then get home.  I have a couple more posts set to go live later today so feel free to stop back and help yourself to the coffee… it is always on.  🙂

Its Monday, What Are You Reading?

Thanks to J Kaye’s Book Blog, I have a bit of organization each week when I report in to what I have read and what I plan to read.  This is loads of fun and fun to see what everyone else is reading as well!  Feel free to write your own post about what you are reading and be sure to link it to J Kayes Blog linky so others can peek in on your books as well!  🙂

I feel like I am on a treadmill….. going going going ….. nowhere.  🙂  I have quite a few reviews ready to go from the books I read while in Honduras but am trying to stagger them out to one or no more than two, book reviews a day on the blog so each can get wonderful coverage.

For this last week I read:

Marriage 101 by Jewell R. Powell (with a chance to win a date night package!)

Love Has A Face by Michelle Perry

The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls

White Picket Fences by Susan Meissner (this one has a giveaway!)

Jantsen’s Gift by Pam Cope (also with giveaway and I read this one two weeks ago in Honduras… just didnt get review up until last week)

The Magic Warble by Victoria Simcox

LimeLight by Melody Carlson

Leaving Carolina by Tamara Leigh

What Matters Most by Melody Carlson

(The last three were all read in Honduras and on the plane the previous week and reviewed this week)

For this week I have three and one audio:

The Secret of Joy by Melissa Senate I am finishing it up tonight for the tour tomorrow!

Behold The Dawn by K.M. Weiland yes!  Our very own blogger and twitter friend K.M…. I want tot start this one in the next couple of days!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collinsuh huh… I am that girl… so late on reading this book and purchased it this past weekend.  I plan to be into this one over the weekend

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is in my cd player and what I am listening to when I relax in the evenings and blog surf.

So… I am reading.  No doubt about that.  I am organizing my book shelves currently as in today and have many reviews to still write so never a dull moment around here.
