In My Mailbox

In the reading room I have this great little 2 drawer stand.  The stands drawers are deep like a filing cabinet and as books come in to my home each week (by mail, by gift, by library, by me…) they go in the drawers of this stand until I take them out and catalog them for this weekly post.

Many weeks, such as this one, I start pulling out of the drawers and I am surprised how many have entered these walls.  Its like a little Christmas each week!  So a special thank you to Kristi at Story Siren, who inspired me by hosting this weekly meme.

Secrets, secrets are no fun. Secrets, secrets hurt someone. . . .

An eccentric new girl. A brooding socialite. The scion of one of New York’s wealthiest families. A promising filmmaker. As students at the exclusive Chadwick School, Phoebe, Lauren, Nick, and Patch already live in a world most teenagers only dream about.

They didn’t ask to be Society members. But when three of them receive a mysterious text message promising success and fame beyond belief, they say yes to everything—even to the harrowing initiation ceremony in a gritty warehouse downtown and to the ankh-shaped tattoo they’re forced to get on the nape of their necks. Once they’re part of the Society, things begin falling into place for them. Week after week, their ambitions are fulfilled. It’s all perfect—until a body is found in Central Park with no distinguishing marks except for an ankh-shaped tattoo.

I seriously am loving this cover and this story line!  Thanks to Luxury Reading for first introducing me to this book!  I had to purchase it!

The world is changing: the government has seized control of every aspect of society, and now, kids are disappearing. For 15-year-old Wisty and her older brother Whit, life turns upside down when they are torn from their parents one night and slammed into a secret prison for no reason they can comprehend. The New Order, as it is known, is clearly trying to suppress Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Being a Normal Teenager. But while trapped in this totalitarian nightmare, Wisty and Whit discover they have incredible powers they’d never dreamed of. Can this newly minted witch and wizard master their skills in time to save themselves, their parents–and maybe the world?

I am so into James Patterson these days and I love the diversity in his books.  I was interested in this YA read the moment I seen it.  This one I bought two of – one for me and one for my son.  I have read mysteries, suspense, and even romance from Patterson…. this one will be a new adventure!

Author Jonny Bowden looks at what he calls “The Four Horsemen of Aging”—free radicals, inflammation, glycation, and stress—and shows how they can harm your health and shorten your life. Bowden then unveils an arsenal of anti-aging strategies culled from cutting edge research and lessons learned from the longest lived people on the planet. He examines how the major organs, such as the heart and the brain, age and how you can prevent damage to these vital parts of the body. In total, readers learn what they can eat, do, and take to feel great, avoid illness, and live a long life.

I enjoy interesting books on keeping fit and eating right.  I am always up for new ways to keep the workouts fresh and fun.  When this book was offered up for review I jumped at the chance!

When SPC Anthony joined the Army at 18, he went in with high hopes and sterling ideals; coming from a family with a proud military background, Anthony expected to meet mentors, heroes and lifelong friends while earning money for college and becoming a man. What he discovered was a disenchanting web of mundane corruption and self-serving lies. Unlike accounts exposing the military’s most shameful iniquities, Anthony’s memoir focuses on an endless parade of petty offenses-the cowardice, drug addiction, thievery, adultery and rampant hypocrisy-he found while working in a base hospital. Relentlessly honest and reflective, Anthony’s record communicates perfectly the stranglehold of sadness, fear and disappointment that came with his lost innocence; just as worse is his eventual acceptance of the pointless, dysfunctional bureaucracy maintaining the status quo. Avoiding the intensity of the battlefield and the OR itself, Anthony’s frustrations resonate with the feelings of any young man learning about the nature of authority and his helplessness before it. Readers curious about the human side of the ongoing Iraqi conflict will be struck by Anthony’s strong voice, direct storytelling and stark honesty.

No – I am not a war buff, but I do like true stories and when I first heard about this book I knew I wanted to know more.

She’s Back, and edgier than ever. In her debut narrative, Drunk, Divorced, & Covered in Cat Hair, blogger extraordinaire Laurie Perry, aka ‘Crazy Aunt Purl,’ gave women everywhere a hilarious yet heartfelt glimpse into her misadventures as a recent divorcee with a herd of cats, a slight wine and Cheetos problem, and scores of unfinished and uneven knitting projects.

Now, in her second installment, she’s no longer drunk-dialing her ex. She is well on her way to divorce recovery and has embraced a new-found philosophy: To make the best out of the ‘extra odd bits’—both in knitting and in life. Discovering how she accomplishes this will make you laugh and cry as she navigates new territory, from dating in a weird, wired world to vacationing solo for the first time. On the cusp of the big four-O, she ventures to the most exotic, foreign locations—the gym, a therapist’s office, a self-tanning emporium— on a search for enlightenment and happiness in— where else?—downtown Los Angeles.

As usual… my reading pallet takes me all over the board and this review looked a little to funny to pass up.  I think what really caught my eyes is that this book includes 12 knitting recipes.  I know…. I don’t knit… but I am curious anyway!  🙂

Readers are in for a delightful romp with this award-winning debut from a British author who dances in the footsteps of P.L. Travers and Roald Dahl. As the story opens, mysterious goings-on ruffle the self-satisfied suburban world of the Dursleys, culminating in a trio of strangers depositing the Dursleys’ infant nephew Harry in a basket on their doorstep. After 11 years of disregard and neglect at the hands of his aunt, uncle and their swinish son Dudley, Harry suddenly receives a visit from a giant named Hagrid, who informs Harry that his mother and father were a witch and a wizard, and that he is to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry himself. Most surprising of all, Harry is a legend in the witch world for having survived an attack by the evil sorcerer Voldemort, who killed his parents and left Harry with a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. And so the fun begins, with Harry going off to boarding school like a typical English kid?only his supplies include a message-carrying owl and a magic wand. There is enchantment, suspense and danger galore (as well as enough creepy creatures to satisfy the most bogeymen-loving readers, and even a magical game of soccer like Quidditch to entertain sports fans) as Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione plumb the secrets of the forbidden third floor at Hogwarts to battle evil and unravel the mystery behind Harry’s scar. Rowling leaves the door wide open for a sequel; bedazzled readers will surely clamor for one.

I have recently been reading book one again and I have to say it is bringing me right back to the brilliance it once was.  It never grows old for me.  I love right from the start how J K Rowling is simply brilliant!  I heard through a conversation on Twitter that the audios of the books were fantastic so I set out to see for myself.  This one arrived this week, a used copy I purchased on line but see now I have goofed as it is in cassette and not DVD.  Oh well….  hopefully it is just as wonderful.

About three things I was absolutely certain. First, Edwart was most likely my soul mate, maybe. Second, there was a vampire part of him–which I assumed was wildly out of his control–that wanted me dead. And third, I unconditionally, irrevocably, impenetrably, heterogeneously, gynecologically, and disreputably wished he had kissed me.

I had never heard of this book prior to me opening it up as a gift from my son on Christmas.  The cover made me think it was another vampire like series hanging on to the coat tales of Twilight.  In a way, I was right…  when I turned the book over to read the back… I laughed out loud.  I am currently reading this and it is pretty fun.

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

This is a book I fell totally in love with from the reviews on line.  I think I first spotted it on Kristi’s Story Siren post… and then it snowballed from there.  This one also showed up under the tree for Christmas from my wonderful husband who sees first hand all the books I am surrounded by and yet has the heart to purchase me another!

“Empowering, motivating, and inspiring, The One-Day Way artfully weaves the story of Chantel Hobbs’s weight struggles and triumphs with practical strategies. Chantel shows readers how to change their thoughts and habits to move toward long-term, sustainable weight loss. The key messages–taking each day as it comes and turning negative, sabotaging thoughts into positive ones–are powerful.”

Yes, another book on healthy habits.  It is that time of year where many people take a good hard look at where they are at physically and decide to make a change.  For me, I made that change over a year ago and try to keep healthy habits in my path by surrounding myself with people who want to eat healthy and who challenge me to be the best I can be.

With startling transparency, Joshua Harris shares how we can rediscover the relevance and power of Christian truth. This is book shows a young man who rose quickly to success in the Christian evangelical world before he realized his spirituality lacked a foundation—it rested more on tradition and morality than on an informed knowledge of God.

For the indifferent or spiritually numb, Harris’s humorous and engaging reflections on Christian beliefs show that orthodoxy isn’t just for scholars—it is for anyone who longs to know the living Jesus Christ. As Harris writes, “I’ve come to learn that theology matters. It matters not because we want to impress people, but because what we know about God shapes the way we think and live. Theology matters because if we get it wrong then our whole life will be wrong.”

I have read Josh before and enjoyed his writing.  This is a book I am thrilled to review.

Set in 1907 Wisconsin, Goolrick’s fiction debut (after a memoir, The End of the World as We Know It) gets off to a slow, stylized start, but eventually generates some real suspense. When Catherine Land, who’s survived a traumatic early life by using her wits and sexuality as weapons, happens on a newspaper ad from a well-to-do businessman in need of a “reliable wife,” she invents a plan to benefit from his riches and his need. Her new husband, Ralph Truitt, discovers she’s deceived him the moment she arrives in his remote hometown. Driven by a complex mix of emotions and simple animal attraction, he marries her anyway. After the wedding, Catherine helps Ralph search for his estranged son and, despite growing misgivings, begins to poison him with small doses of arsenic.

Does this look super or what?  What a great story line and I love my cover much better than the one on Amazon!

. . dramatic, tender, funny, frightening, earthy, quirky, wise and heart-warming. The tale of young Christa and her family as they leave a comfortable home to become penniless immigrants in their quest to survive the collapse of the Third Reich and flee the horrors that it has unleashed, opens up to universal themes of suffering, loss, love and hope.

Another book I am anxious to read!

From Mayo Clinic, a leading authority on health and nutrition, comes The Mayo Clinic Diet, the last diet you’ll ever need.

Get a quick and gratifying start with Lose It!, the phase of the diet designed to help you lose up to six to ten pounds in just two weeks. Eat the foods you love – in moderation – in the Live It! phase, which is designed to help you continue to lose one to two pounds a week (and keep them off!).

This is exciting and my review copy came with the journal as well!  I am going to look this over this next week and see if I can implement some of the habits for the review.

Yes! It is a Barnes & Noble Gift Card!!!  I cant decide what it will be……

There it is!  That’s what was in my mailbox this week.  How about you?  Did fabulous reads come your way?  Be sure to connect over at Story Siren’s blog.  I would love to see what you got!

Life On The Mississippi by Mark Twain

As part of Newsweek’s 50 Books For Our Times… I agreed to read and review this book as part of a Challenge hosted by Amy of My Friend Amy’s Blog.  I have always had a fascination with Mark Twain and this was the perfect excuse to lock myself into a read I wanted on my list anyway.  I hope you enjoy what I have learned through a little book on a big adventure on a body of water I know well…. the Mississippi.  ~ Sheila

For four of his Seventy-five years, Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) worked at the wheel of a Mississippi Steam boat, first as an apprentice, training for his pilot license.  For Twain, this was a long time dream that never lost it’s hold.  Years later, a mature Mark Twain (already famous at that time in Europe and at home) looked back over this time as an apprentice and said this, “The Steamboat Pilot was the only unfettered and entirely independent human being that lived on the earth.”

This book is his story…

Reading about Twain’s life on the Mississippi was a treat for my mind.  I enjoy reading about the great people that I would have loved to have known and Mark Twain would make my list for just such a person.  A witty and occasionally humorous writer, Twain’s book read like a diary of his day to day life.  A format taken from the first edition of the book in 1883 and one I really enjoyed.

Mark Twain works hard to reach his dream of becoming a pilot of a Steamboat.  Outlined in great detail of not only his hard won triumphs but also his humiliating moments this was a delight to read.

When Twain returns to the Mississippi to gather material to write this book many years later, I enjoyed the descriptions of the changes that were noted.  It did not matter that at one time  he knew every corner and curve.  It was much like starting over and the land that had now been developed changed the look of the river as well.

While the book is truly a lot of information on the Mississippi and the day to day life of an apprentice and then as a Pilot, I still found it interesting.  Reading about Twain’s own brother dieing on a steamboat that Twain himself had arranged the job, was not only painful for the writer, but also as the reader.  There is information on the Civil War and Twain shares his thoughts in this book on how he feels it affected America afterward.  In a word?  Fascinating.

I purchased my copy of this book at our local bookstore, Bookworld

Morning Meanderings…

YES!  The weekend is here.  I am in my chair in the reading room surrounded by books.  Ahhhhhhh!  I really have nothing planned for today and I thrilled about that.   No cooking to do, no cleaning…. all has been done over the last couple of days.  No errands to run.  Al is working on bids today in the office and Justin will be waking soon and then off to work for him.  The house is filled with only me.

My plan is to grab another cup of coffee, settle in with my favorite blanket and bask myself in a world of books.  It has been a long time since I have had a day like this and I am so ready for it.  I have books to finish, reviews to write and I am hopeful that in that sense, today will be quite productive.

How about you?  As Christmas has passed for 2009, are you still traveling and visiting?  On your way back to your homes?  Out checking to see the great after Christmas sales?  Or like me, looking at your day and seeing nothing pressing and demanding of your time and grabbing a book… (if so… what book did you grab?)

Morning Meanderings…

Its a snowy day here in central Minnesota.  I am sitting at my lap top this morning with Coffee Cup close by and a few Dove Chocolates.  Al is outside plowing out the driveway and Justin is still sleeping from our late night of watching Harry Potter movies, #5 and #6 back to back.  We went to bed about 2 am.

With Brad in the Navy we changed up our regular Christmas morning gift exchange to Christmas Eve.  We figured that way everyone could sleep in if they want to and have all day today to relax and enjoy.  It was wonderfully bitter sweet.  Al is always so hard to buy for but loved his laptop and played on it for hours after we were all done opening.  It was fun to see him so excited.

Justin received the camera he wanted and after I had spend painstaking hours trying to find the right one…. I was thrilled to see that he loved the one I picked!

Among the wonderful things I received was a Barnes and Noble gift card (My Mother Ship!) and two books – one I have been wanting really bad and the other I have never heard of but am excited to read it as it sounds fun!

Oh my gosh – right?  Does this not sound funny???  I hadn’t heard of this book before I opened it last night, a gift from my son, and now I just want to start reading this sure to be a laugh out loud giggle fest picking on my beloved Twilight Series… and that’s ok!  🙂

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

I have been coveting this book for awhile now and my super sweet husband found it for me!   The cover is awesome….  I am anxious to see what it holds inside!

I am off to check on the turkey, shovel the deck walkway in front for us and in back for the dogs and then…. I am sitting down with a book.  Merry Christmas Everyone – I hope your day and your weekend is exactly what you had hoped it would be!

Oh yeah – I linked up these books so I need to disclose that I am an Amazon associate.  😉

Morning Meanderings….

It’s Christmas Eve and we have snowfall and lots of it. I just looked at the weather report and found this:

Statement as of 7:36 AM CST on December 24, 2009 … Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 am CST
Saturday…

* Road conditions will continue to deteriorate during the day.  There may be somewhat of a let up in the snow from midday into  early evening… but the next round of heavy snow will move back in tonight… and continue into Christmas day.

What does this mean for us?  Well – I work in the office today.  I have 4 wheel drive in my Durango so I can pretty much get anywhere.  I have a couple things I forgot to pick up at the grocery store I will hit that this morning as well….  and  I am stocked up to endure the weekend here in  the house if need be and that would actually be quite appealing to me after all the running of late.

Maybe the guys will get the snowmobiles out this weekend and if they ride – I get to stay home and read!  🙂

I’ll be posting through the weekend so stop back if you can…. and if you are traveling wherever you are drive safe and have a wonderful weekend!

**ONE REMINDER:  The Gift Card giveaway will end today for the YA Reviews.  Check that out here – one person will be receiving a $20 Amazon gift card!  Today is the last day to enter and by doing so you will be helping a wonderful person out!  🙂

For now I leave you with this (these are pictures of my yard this past April of 2009 as well as a couple other pics I took the liberty of adding……. I woke up and gasped…. it looked like Narnia.

Horrid Henry’s Christmas by Francesca Simon

A book that is sure to cause an outbreak of giggles… ~ Sheila

If you have a child between the age of 4 and 8, they are probably familiar with the shenanigans of Horrid Henry.  Author Francesca Simon has made Horrid Henry the #1 bestselling chapter book series for children in the UK.  With over 15 million copies of the Horrid Henry books sold, apparently readers everywhere are enjoying these tales…

This was my first time reading Horrid Henry and this book has 4 stories centered around Henry’s adventures over Christmas.  I have to admit, I really enjoyed the book.  The four short stories were witty and funny.  In the first story Henry is upset that he didn’t get the leading role in the Christmas play at school, however he takes his part as the Innkeeper to a whole new and hysterical level.

In the second story Henry battles over decorating the tree with his brother, Perfect Peter.  Henry had Christmas presents for people… but due to a series of events…. now he did not and he has to think outside the box of what to do….

In the third story it is Christmas Eve and Henry’s greed for gifts gives him the idea to ambush Santa.  Yeah… you heard me right.

And finally in the fourth story Christmas is here and by now I realize that Henry really is horrid!  Children would probably giggle themselves silly as this book is being read….  outrageous behavior, over the top horribleness…. Francesca has earned her way with these books that are sure to bring a smile to the most reluctant of readers!

Morning Meanderings…

I haven’t had a morning post in days…..  I hate that.  I love connecting in the morning and sharing what is happening and then hearing from all of you.  It kind if my thing…

I actually started a post yesterday, hurrying through it as I knew the clock was ticking closer to the time I was suppose to be at the gym.  The words were not coming together… and frankly, they were boring.  I was bored with my own words that were suppose to be witty – and well, I tossed it in the “DELETE” pile and went to the gym.

So this morning, I still have nothing brilliant say but did want to check in and say although life has been busy – I am still here.  Last night I put a post up for Mrs. Claus Explains It All and later today will be the results of my first ever Horrid Henry book, Horrid Henry’s Christmas.

I have one more small item to pick up and my groceries for Christmas dinner but other than that I am done.  (The word done echos in my head like the Liberty Bell).  I think if I had a little energy I would be doing a happy dance as well, but that is going to have to wait.

How about you?  Are you done with waiting in lines, and clicking “purchase” on line?  Are the searches over the perfect gift?  AND (this is important!) if you are one of those people who have finished months ago and these past few weeks have mearly been Christmas specials on TV and good books by the fireplace….  I want…. I NEED… the secret to your success.  Share it.  I must know…. I want to be the person who shops early but it has yet to happen in my 42 years.

Have a wonderful day everyone!  My plans are minimal for the next few days…. we dont have a lot of family so it will be the three of us here and I will be reading and posting.  Stop in when you can, I would love to hear from you.  For those who are traveling and have a crazy weekend ahead – drive safe and Merry Christmas!

Mrs. Claus Explains It All by Elsbeth Claus

A keepsake book that will be a hit year after year!  ~ Sheila

By: Elsbeth Claus, David Wenzel
Product ISBN: 9781402211058

Every year millions of letters to Santa reach the North Pole. Many are requests for presents. And many letters have questions about Santa, the elves and workshops, the reindeer, and, of course, the North Pole.

Now Mrs. Claus has her own gift for you – for the first time ever, she’s taking a break from her very busy schedule to answer real questions from children of all ages. Join her on a tour of the North Pole and learn some of the best kept secrets of Christmas from the person who knows it all – Mrs. Claus!

Each question is accompanied by the colorful illustrations of David T. Wenzel, whose projects have included the Christmas bestseller Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Robert L. May and the visualization of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit as illustrated in graphic novel format.

A big beautiful book that was exciting to pull off the shelf.  Page by page the questions are posted by the children with care…. and Mrs. Claus has the answers to share!

Dear, Mrs. Claus, what are their favorite songs?  It’s safe to say pretty much all the Christmas carols, of course.  Then there are quite a few favorites that are in the old Elfin languages, which I can;t include here because the letters don’t exist on my keyboard.  Elves love to sing rounds too, but you won’t catch Elves singing mushy love songs.

Fascinating and fun pictures that I enjoyed so much I know that the little ones would!

Great questions that the kids want to know…. Mrs. Claus has the answers!

I love oversize books and this large Christmas read is perfect for an evening of hot cocoa and a cookie or two.

Giveaway: The Imperial Cruise by James Bradley (audio)

In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt dispatched Secretary of War William Howard Taft on the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in history to Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. Roosevelt’s glamorous twenty-one year old daughter Alice served as mistress of the cruise, which included senators and congressmen. On this trip, Taft concluded secret agreements in Roosevelt’s name. In 2005, a century later, James Bradley traveled in the wake of Roosevelt’s mission and discovered what had transpired in Honolulu, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing and Seoul.
