Football Is For Lovers by Bob and Kaye O’Dougherty

An interesting look into the game of football and relationships ~  Sheila

Football is for LoversCan learning about football be sexy? According to Football is for Lovers, when it comes to your love life, football can be better than oysters.

The good news is that Football is for Lovers makes the basics so . . . well, so basic that learning the game is easy as eating an ice cream cone. And just as much fun.

With anecdotes, illustrations, and a lot of laughs, Football is for Lovers not only makes it easy to understand the game, but also shows you how to put an end to the TV clicker wars, improve your relationship, and spice up your love life.

It just takes looking at the game of football a little bit differently.

Then again, since Football is for Lovers contains references to football great Jerry Rice in a pink tutu, images of paintings by French artist Jean Dubuffet, an alert about the dangers of speaking Northeastern Mandarin, an explanation of the value of M & M’s in a relationship, and a Burma Shave sign, to say it looks at football “a little bit differently” may be something of an understatement.

But if your football-obsessed partner has been making you a ‘football widow’ from August NFL pre-season through the February Super-Bowl, thus convincing you that you hate football, this little book may be just the ‘different look’ you need to discover that, after all, Football really is for Lovers!

My Thoughts….

Uhhhh…. well, hmmmm… Ok.  For those of you who read this blog on any normal basis would know that this book is way out in left field for me (no pun intended).  When it arrived in the mail I looked closely at the cover and had to question myself as to what I thought I was getting.  A book on football that was suppose to explain the game and in a humorous way was my response.  AND… in all honesty, that is what I did get… with just a bit more…

Football is For Lovers is a book about football – and it is also about how to draw your significant others attention back your way during the season that makes many of us women feel like we are on the outside looking in.  The book does cover information on the game itself that I did not know and that was helpful for the few games I have tried to watch and be excited about.

The more intimate parts of the book are actually minimal and I can see where this book would be a great gift for newly weds who are also sports fans.  This book is more about getting to know the game of Football and being able to enjoy it together.  Bob and Kaye share the how tos of football in a light and fun manner that even made sense to someone like me who knows very little about the game.

About the Author

Bob Brooker and Kaye O’Dougherty have been adventuring together for a lot of years now. They first met at a recording studio on 42nd Street. Yes, that 42nd Street. They recorded a commercial for E.J. Korvette’s, who went out of business soon thereafter.

Bob is an old saloon singer who, as Bobby Brookes, recorded for Victor and Capital back in the day. Kaye has trouble carrying a tune in a bucket. Nevertheless, over the years, as Brooker and O’Dougherty, the two have collaborated on a variety of theater projects, performing, writing, directing, managing, and producing. In keeping with the changing times, they have even created a cyber alter-ego named eBobb.

Recently, Bob and Kaye both took long-overdue turns at being rather mature college kids. Kaye now holds a Bachelors Degree in the Humanities from St. Peter’s College in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Bob was graduated magna cum laude from Montclair State University with a BA in Theater, and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

What I Learned… smiley-thinking

I actually learned quite a bit about the game of football.  On page 104 there is a great page of a little cartoon referee who shows what each of the penalty signs mean.  I even picked up on a few facts that the guys may not know such as the width of the field…

The 13 Days of Halloween by Carol Greene

13 days of halloween“On the first day of Halloween my good friend gave to me: a vulture in a dead tree.”

Everyone knows the Twelve Days of Christmas, but are you ready for the Thirteen Days of Halloween?  In this delightfully offbeat story, a dashing ghoul tried to win his ghostly love’s heart with heaps of hilarious gifts – ranging from broomsticks and bats to cauldron’s and cats!

Author CAROL GREENE wrote her first poem when she was six years old (it was about a spider).  SpiderTo date she has published more than 200 books for children.  Carol also likes to read, sing, and make teddy bears.

Illustrator TIM RAGLIN brings his wacky imagination and wonderfully odd cast of characters to this book.  His previous books include:  The Wolf Who Cried Boy, The Curse of Catunkhamun, and The Birthday ABC.  He received a silver metal from the New York Society of illustrations for his book Uncle Mugsy and The Terrible Twins.

My Thoughts:

Beautifully illustrated I really enjoyed this book.  It is easy to see that kids are going to find great enjoyment to a tune they are already familiar with.  Each page I had to read every word to keep up the rhythm of the song…  The 13 Days of Halloween is one I can picture coming out each October and reading as a family in anticipation of the holiday that kids and adults alike enjoy.  It was a T R E A T to read!

EXTRAORDINARY by John Bevere w/ Giveaway

John Bevere paints a picture for us of what living Extraordinary lives can look like… ~ Sheila

About This Book

abaIsn’t it true that we long to see the extraordinary, experience the extraordinary, do the extraordinary? Yet, so often we settle for mediocrity when greatness is within our grasp.

Why are we drawn to stories of heroic triumph over seemingly impossible circumstances? In our fascination with adventure movies, superheroes, and tales of incredible human feats, do we reveal an inherent desire for something larger and greater in life? Maybe what we think is a need to escape or be entertained is actually a God inspired longing…for the extraordinary.

Best-selling author John Bevere reveals how all of us were “meant for more,” extraordinarily created and intended for a life that is anything but ordinary. Here is the roadmap for your journey of transformation. You are marked for a life that far surpasses the usual definitions of success or fulfillment.

Isn’t it time to pursue your extraordinary life?

My Thoughts…

This is my first read written by John Bevere and I found it enjoyable.  I like it when an author of a book like this shares insights into their own lives, almost breaking down the point of the book into layman terms….  what could be an overly heavy book is not – due to the style in which John writes.

In one point early on in the book, John shares about a moment he had with his sons at the dinner table.  He told them that there was nothing they could do to make their parents love them anymore than they already do or anything they could do to make their parents love them any less.  However – they were in charge of how pleased their parents were with them.

I had to smile here as I have had a similar conversation with our sons stating that no matter what they did we would always love them…. however, we didn’t always have to like the choices they may make in life.  (I believe John Bevere worded it better.  Out of this area of the book came a reminder that God feels the same way about each of us.  No matter what… no matter what we do – God is going to love us.  Unconditionally.  He may not always like what we do, we may cause Him great pain and tears…. yet He calls us to Him again and again.  Humbling isn’t it?

At the end of each chapter John has left questions, or reflections, as he calls them, on the chapter.  The questions are through provoking and would make for good discussion with a group.

The Cinderella Society by Kay Cassidy

Kay gives a wonderful voice to the YA in me…I am left with  my own memories of school, and boys…. and how we all just wanted to fit in somewhere… ~ Sheila

a cinderellaWhat’s a girl to do when the glass slipper fits, but she doesn’t want to wear it anymore?

Sixteen-year-old Jess Parker survives by staying invisible. Then she gets the chance of a lifetime: an invitation to join the Cinderella Society, a secret club of some of the most popular girls in school, where makeovers are the first order of official business. Catching the eye of her popular crush, and with a chance to finally fit in, Jess feels like she’s found her fairy tale.

Until the Wickeds – led by Jess’s archenemy – begin targeting innocent girls, and Jess learns that there’s more to being a Cindy than reinventing yourself from the outside. She’s become part of a battle for good vs. evil, and now the Cindys need Jess on special assignment. Is honouring her new sisterhood worth destroying her dream life?

My Thoughts…

Where do I begin? I picked up Kay’s book wondering what this book would be about… a coming of age story?  Ugly duckling to swan?  No – I found out quickly that this was a different story… a story of acceptance in a school where you are the new kid…. a story of those high school years where everything is a big deal (or at least as teens you tend to think it is) prestige, parents, clothing, and of course who you hang out with.  A story with another story inside it,one that goes back 100+ years… a story of a group of strong women with *Power *Personality *Appearance *Strength ... a secret society called The Cinderella Society.

I immediately took to the main character of Jess…. trying to be strong and fit in, I think I could sense a little bit of me in this character when I was that age.  Jess and I?  Yeah… we bonded.  Jess is a wonderful character who is a typical teenager, trying to fit into her new school and trying not to be embarrassed by a very pregnant mother who Jess feels relies on her too much.   Jess has  decided that it is too late for a “mother/daughter bonding” at this point.  No matter how hard her mom may try.

And what is a book without a villain… or in this case, a wicked?  Lexy is Jess’s arch enemy.  Ever since Jess won the spot on the cheerleader squad over Lexy it has been a battle.  Lexy is after Jess and works hard to make her look stupid at every opportunity from spilling coffee drinks on her to starting hurtful rumors….  As Jess works to counteract each blow, you wonder what is the story behind Lexy’s anger?

This is one of those books that I am so excited about having this opportunity to read and want to share so much of it with you !  About the secret society (Oh yes my friends – it is that cool!) about the hot guy (what YA book would be complete without him?) and about the friendships we make through those years while we are molding into who we will become… and probably more importantly, the friendships that survive those years, the good ones… that make it through because we all know… those are the true ones. (Yes – that is an intentional run on sentence!) Yet, I don’t want to give away too much so I am going to encourage you to seriously consider this book to go on your own TBR lists for yourself or the YA in your life….. because she is going to thank you for it!

Let’s Talk about Kay Cassidy…kay

VIOLA in Reel Life by Adriana Trigiani

The voice that comes alive in Viola’s character is one that spoke to the 14 year old me.  I was carried back into a time  of awkward moments of adolescence, dances you remember forever, and breathtaking first kisses…  ~ Sheila

viola-in-reel-lifeSynopsis

I’m marooned.

Abandoned.

Left to rot in boarding school . . .

Viola doesn’t want to go to boarding school, but somehow she ends up at an all-girls school in South Bend, Indiana, far, far away from her home in Brooklyn, New York. Now Viola is stuck for a whole year in the sherbet-colored sweater capital of the world.

Ick.

There’s no way Viola’s going to survive the year—especially since she has to replace her best friend Andrew with three new roommates who, disturbingly, actually seem to like it there. She resorts to viewing the world (and hiding) behind the lens of her video camera.

Boarding school, though, and her roommates and even the Midwest are nothing like she thought they would be, and soon Viola realizes she may be in for the most incredible year of her life.

But first she has to put the camera down and let the world in.

My Thoughts:

OMG!  LOL!  Really and truly I adored this book!  I enjoyed this book from the first sentence, “YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO BE ME.”  I loved the dramatic voice of our fourteen year old Viola.  I remember those days when the world was going to end because things did not go the way you wanted.  Life was so…. intense.  So here I am deeply engrossed in a book all about Viola and her wonderful BFFAA (Best Friend Forever And Always) Andrew, her three new roommates in boarding school who seen to have already pegged her from hour one, and the possibility of a new relationship with a boy who’s love is calculated by the number of IM’s, and texts, four kisses, one hand holding, one date, one cookie and one book.

Ahhhh… first love.

Tie all that in a hip and happening Grandma (Grand) who has a back ground in acting, two adoring but at this time anyway distant parents… and you have the making of one great read.

I have to thank Jennifer at BookClubGirl who introduced me to this book and then sent me a copy to read and be part of the live chat with the author Adriana Trigiani on Wednesday of this past week.  I didn’t get to say a lot during the live chat as I had to run Chance to Youth Group in the middle of it but it was fun to participate and see the conversation roll out.

A great YA…. I applaud Adriana Trigiani for this youthful book and I plan on looking into more of what she has written.

Bo’s Cafe by John Lynch * Bill Thrall * Bruce McNichol w/ giveaway

A fantastic Christian read with the combination of incredible food, faith, and friends… what more could you want out of Bo’s cafe?

~ Sheila

Bo's CafeHigh-powered executive Steven Kerner is living the dream in southern California. But when his bottled pain ignites in anger one night, his wife kicks him out. Then an eccentric mystery man named Andy Monroe befriends Steven and begins unraveling his tightly wound world. Andy leads Steven through a series of frustrating and revealing encounters to repair his life through genuine friendship and the grace and love of a God who has been waiting for him to accept it. A story to challenge and encourage, BO’S CAFE is a model for all who struggle with unresolved problems and a performance-based life. Those who desire a fuller, more authentic way of living will find this journey of healing a restorative exploration of God’s unbridled grace.

My Thoughts: Bo’s Cafe was a wonderful read.  I really enjoyed the story line between Steve and Lindsey.  In today’s world I am believing that this is all to often the circumstances and I found this book believable.  Bo’s Cafe is a captivating read… from the great cover picture of a warm inviting cafe filled to the brim with friends, even within the pages you find people like Andy – a little mysterious, but there is something more to that guy that you cant quite put your finger on… and he  drive’s an old car and live life with a sense of joy.

On page 228 I found a quote that I think may need to go on the sidebar of this blog somewhere… “Integrity is proven when you admit what you cannot do and honor what you say you can.”

I found the book refreshing.  As a Christian read, the book covers well that no one needs another list of do’s and don’ts.  I loved that in this book we are reminded that God loves us for who we are.  He created us out of His love.  Personally, I know how long it took me just to learn that it was ok to be real – it is ok to be flawed and fail and get back up again.  God is first in line to hold out a helping hand.  Andy’s character is a fine example and I enjoyed getting to know him and the rest of the gang at Bo’s Cafe.

And how fun is it that this book is written by three authors who are friends?

Sir Dalton and The Shadow Heart (book 3) by Chuck Black

This book dropped me into a battle field… one that I am reminded as I read this that we continue to fight daily…  ~Sheila

sir daltonSir Dalton, a knight in training, seems to have everything going for him. Young, well-liked, and a natural leader, he has earned the respect and admiration of his fellow knights, and especially the beautiful Lady Brynn.

But something is amiss at the training camp. Their new trainer is popular but lacks the passion to inspire them to true service to the King and the Prince. Besides this, the knights are too busy enjoying a season of good times to be concerned with a disturbing report that many of their fellow Knights have mysteriously vanished.

When Sir Dalton is sent on a mission, he encounters strange attacks, especially when he is alone. As his commitment wanes, the attacks grow in intensity until he is captured by Lord Drox, a massive Shadow Warrior. Bruised and beaten, Dalton refuses to submit to evil and initiates a daring escape with only one of two outcomes-life or death. But what will become of the hundreds of knights he’ll leave behind? In a kingdom of peril, Dalton thinks he is on his own, but two faithful friends have not abandoned him, and neither has a strange old hermit who seems to know much about the Prince. But can Dalton face the evil Shadow Warrior again and survive?

Author bio.: chuck

Chuck and his wife, Andrea, homeschool their six children and have a family music ministry that travels throughout the region. He is the author of nine novels, has been published in The Old Schoolhouse e-zine, and has received praise from parents across the country for his unique approach to telling biblical truths. Chuck and his family live in Williston, North Dakota.

armorMy Thoughts:

I am coming into this read not having read the first or second book.  Truly written in a good VS. evil style right from the early pages I felt as though I was playing catch up on a story that had begun two books ago.  While this book does stand on its own, if I were to have had time, I would have started with book 1 and went from there working my way to this book in order to just pick up on the flow of Chuck Black’s writing style.  I have to say that the introduction in the book to the Knights of Arrethtrae was very helpful!)

In this book Sir Dalton is in training to be a knight and when he is sent on a mission he finds when he is alone he is being attacked.  (I really love this metaphor in the book and actually paused a bit to think how true this can be…  we are more easily attacked when we are separated from others.)

A likable YA read, I think Sir Dalton makes a wonderful character that kids (I am thinking boys ages 7-13) will relate to.  The book covers great Christian subject matter in a way that reads like the story of knighthood and at the same time great questions are wove into the words…  Sir Dalton

Why should we believe?

What do we do with doubt?

Who can save him?

Sir Dalton continues his training through the book and again I am thinking if my boys were younger they would have enjoyed these books.   A quick read for me….  I was excited to get a bit of a CS Lewis feel to this read.  I think this book would be a great discussion book to review with your child about the power of good and evil and the wonders of a strong spirit.

Cleopatra’s Daughter by Michelle Moran

I leaped feet first into a story of a time that I had not known until now… a time of beautiful treasures and ugly grudges… a time where I met a boy and a girl that I had probably not even known existed if not for Michelle Moran… ~ Sheila

eyecleopatra

The marriage of Marc Antony and Cleopatra is one of the greatest love stories of all time, a tale of unbridled passion cleoredtogacover2with earth-shaking political consequences. Feared and hunted by the powers in Rome, the lovers choose to die by their own hands as the triumphant armies of Antony’s vengeful rival, Octavian, sweep into Egypt.  Their three orphaned children are taken in chains to Rome, but only two—the ten-year-old twins Selene and Alexander—survive the journey. Delivered to the household of Octavian’s sister, the siblings cling to each other and to the hope that they will return one day to their rightful place on the throne of Egypt. As they come of age, they are buffeted by the personal ambitions of Octavian’s family and court, by the ever-present threat of slave rebellion, and by the longings and desires deep within their own hearts.

Selene’s narrative is animated by the concerns of a young girl in any time and place  —the possibility of finding love, the pull of friendship and family, and the pursuit of her unique interests and talents. While coping with the loss of both her family and her ancestral kingdom, Selene must find a path around the dangers of a foreign land. Her accounts of life in Rome are filled with historical details that vividly capture both the glories and horrors of the time. She dines with the empire’s most illustrious poets and politicians, witnesses the creation of the Pantheon, and navigates the colorful, crowded marketplaces of the city where Roman-style justice is meted out with merciless authority.

Octavian's Mausoleum today
Octavian's Mausoleum today

My Thoughts:

Michelle Moran has written a book that has left me with that feeling I have when I know I have read something wonderful.  Well written… I entered at the point that Cleopatra and Marc Anthony are taking their own lives in order to resist captivity and learn of their three children who are left in the enemies hands.  Three children, I am ashamed to say, that I did not know existed until this book.

And from that point on I am feasting on pages filled with the adventures of Alexander and Selene…  historical fiction at a very fine level.  I am in awe of the twins voices… as they speak I had to remind myself again and again of their age.  The voices to me seamed older but I forget how much faster children grew up then.  While they were 11, they spoke as though they were 15 or 16…

Vivid characters – I appreciated the list of who they were in the front of the book and I used that a lot as I becasme used to so any new names coming in at once, Octavian (Emporer and keeper of the children once he conquered their home), Octavia, his sister – a gentle soul who I grew to like.  And so many more from the handsome Marcellus, to the puzzling Julia who drove me nuts, then I felt bad for her, then I was mad again… and oh – you have to love the characters that make you FEEL.

I adored this book.  This is the first of Michelle’s work that I have read and I am ready for more.  A fantastic read that I highly recommend to history lovers and historical fiction loves alike.

michelle moranMichelle Moran was born in the San Fernando Valley, CA. She took an interest in writing from an early age, purchasing Writer’s Market and submitting her stories and novellas to publishers from the time she was twelve. When she was accepted into Pomona College she took as many classes as possible in British Literature, particularly Milton, Chaucer, and the Bard. Not surprisingly, she majored in English while she was there. Following a summer in Israel where she worked as a volunteer archaeologist, she earned an MA from the Claremont Graduate University.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller

1

Reading this book was like having Donald in my living room having a great conversation about life.  Invite this book over for coffee.  ~ Sheila

Years after writing his best-selling memoir, Donald Miller went into a funk and spent months sleeping in and avoiding his publisher. One story had ended, and Don was unsure how to start another.

But he gets rescued by two movie producers who want to make a movie based on his memoir. When they start fictionalizing Don’s life for film–changing a meandering memoir into a structured narrative–the real-life Don starts a journey to edit his actual life into a better story. A Million Miles in a Thousand Years details that journey and challenges readers to reconsider what they strive for in life. It shows how to get a second chance at life the first time around.

My Thoughts: I read Blue Like jazz by Donald Miller quite some time ago and really enjoyed his insight.  I find myself in that same place again… Donald Miller writes in my language.  In a down to earth, fun way… I read this book in one sitting because putting it down was not an option.  Because reading A Million Miles in a Thousand Years was like having Donald Miller over to my home where we sat and we talked.  This reads like a conversation.  A really good conversation.

Opening this book and reading the opening sentences, “The saddest thing about life is you don’t remember half of it.  You dont even remember half of it.  Not even a tiny percentage…”  Right away that hit home for me.  Occasionally something or someone will trigger this far away deeply buried memory where I will suddenly recall a tiny bit of a different season in my life.  Not only does it surprise me how easily it is to forget moments of your life that were once a very important part of who you were… but I also find it scary.

In this book Donald works on making changes to “his story” the story we will all someday share with God.  In reading this book… I knew, I too wanted a better story.  Once again Donald floors me with his honest look at his own life and in a humorous manner he once again shows how messy our lives are and that’s ok.

A win for Donald Miller and for me.  A read that goes on the keeper shelf to be read again and again.  This book hits the book stores today.  I recommend this as a must read for 2009.

31 Hours by Masha Hamilton

High tension, high action, I will read Masha Hamilton again.

~ Sheila

31_hours_coverIn the middle of the night in New York City, a woman jolts awake, realizing she hasn’t heard from her 21-year-old son in weeks, and knowing beyond doubt that something is wrong.

His girlfriend doesn’t know why he won’t answer his cell phone or why he doesn’t call anymore.

What we know is that the young man, Jonas, is isolated in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge, pondering his recent conversion to Islam and the training he received last year in Pakistan. Alone now, cut off from all dissuasion, Jonas is shaving his legs, eating a gyro, listening to the passing subways and preparing himself for the once unthinkable action he has been instructed to undertake in exactly 31 hours.

His sudden absence from the lives of those who love him causes a cascade of events that span the city. As Hamilton’s intense novel moves through the streets and subways of New York, we come to know the fears and prayers of its characters. We also learn to feel the connections and disconnections that occur between people who have loved one another, not only here, but in the Middle East.

My Thoughts: When I signed on to read this book I chose it as I found it to be refreshingly different than anything I had read before.  That is usually a draw for me… and I was not disappointing by Masha Hamilton’s book.  The background setting of this book – a subway – a mother’s intuition – New York – time  ticking away…

In a word I found this book breathtaking.  The tension I felt from  Carol, the mother, really hit home for me… I could imagine that feeling; all worried about your kid – no matter how old they are (been there – done that).  And all you have to go on is  a feeling. The fact is, I am not sure if this was a read that I would have chose off the book shelf – the terrorism in the book was way out in left field for me and while incredibly intense and interesting…. I felt as though I didn’t let my guard down for the entire book…  Is that possible? And maybe, that’s the way it was suppose to be.

And then…. as suddenly as it began… it reached the ending that left me still unsure if it was time to let go of the breath that I had been holding in for the better part of the book.

I  feel as though I am still processing this book.  I think Masha Hamilton has a well written novel here – with incredibly real characters.  I did enjoy this sometimes difficult read and would like to read more of what she has written. A definite unique read that starts with a shock of adrenaline and  continues to keep the heart rate rising from there.

Masha Hamilton is the author of four acclaimed novels, most recently 31 Hours (2009), an Indie Choice pick by independent booksellers, which Publisher’s Weekly called “gorgeous and complex.” “You don’t just read this gut-wrenching book; you become part of it in a deep, primal way,” wrote StyleSubstanceSoul.com founder Lois Alter Mark. Hamilton is also the founder of two world literacy programs: the Camel Book Drive, begun in 2007 to supply a camel-borne library in northeastern Kenya, and the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, begun in 2009 to foster creative and intellectual exchange between Afghan women writers and American women authors and teachers.
