Good morning.
I would smile and let you in but right now my body is telling me “Oh no you did not!”
Well…. check off another new adventure from the to try list.
Yesterday morning I took my first ever Yoga class. I figured how hard could it be right? It’s just a lot of sitting around and stretching a little bit right?
Well let’s just say I feel it. Ow!
Are my bones suppose to make a creaking noise when I move? 😯
For giggles…. I looked up Yoga this morning to see what the history is.
Yoga (Sanskrit, Pāli: योग yóga) refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines that originated in India.[1] The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.[2][3][4] Within Hinduism, it refers to one of the six orthodox (āstika) schools of Hindu philosophy, and to the goal towards which that school directs its practices.[5][6] In Jainism, yoga is the sum total of all activities — mental, verbal and physical.
The Sanskrit word yoga has many meanings,[11] and is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” meaning “to control,” “to yoke” or “to unite.”[12] Translations include “joining,” “uniting,” “union,” “conjunction,” and “means.”[13][14][15] It is also possible that the word yoga derives from “yujir samadhau,” which means “contemplation” or “absorption.”[16] This translation fits better with the dualist Raja Yoga because it is through contemplation that discrimination between prakrti (nature) and purusha (pure consciousness) occurs.
Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy to a high level of attainment is called a yogi or yogini

Ok then.
Let’s just say that I not going to be a Yogi. 😛

Overall thoughts: It was interesting and I was better at all the bendy stuff then I thought I would be for a first timer. My balance is pretty good and I think I would do it again. Friends tell me that while it seems to be very slow and paced (so not me….) it is surprisingly a good toning workout.

I really enjoy yoga, but I don’t do all the advanced poses because my body just says “no”…lol

Okay, I’m one who thought it was just bending and stretching, and wondered how it could possibly be a workout….hmm. Time to rethink that idea!

Apparently – the stretches are suppose to promote leaner longer muscles which will shape you differently – I have a friend who swears by it.
I am afraid at my age and along with a pleasingly plump body, yoga would be impossible!

I’ve done (practiced?) yoga on and off for – well lets just say decades. My mom and I started when I was in college. I always go back to it. It will make you strong and give you wonderful balance. And no matter a person’s size or endurance, there’s usually a way to do almost any pose.
That’s what I would like Mary – strength and balance – those sound like good things 🙂
I have never tried it, but my sister did it for a while and she said it was a good workout. She said you sweat and everything!

I would encourage you to keep going with it – I love yoga, and it really is an incredible toning and strengthening workout. Just don’t push past your comfort zone on poses, and breathe into them. That really does work. 🙂
Thanks Erin – I am going to try to work this into a morning routine… I am going to try to change my weekday workouts to more before work ones so I can avoid the after work – pre dinner stress 🙂
Just because it’s slow doesn’t mean it’s not a good workout! Just different.

I try to go to a yoga class once a week. I am really enjoying it. This past week a group of high school girls thought they would give it a try, I don’t think they realized that you couldn’t speak during the class, it was torture for them.

I absolutely love yoga when you get into it and don’t need to look at the instructor so much its much more relaxing and definitely toning!
That would be nice…. when everyone else had their eye closed I kept peeking to make sure they had not moved on to something else 😉
I’ve been doing lots of yoga lately and I really enjoy it. I think it’s a great toning workout, although I also can’t wait until it gets warm enough and I can walk/run outside.

What erin said about the breathing. If you’re breathing correctly, you won’t be as sore. Easier said than done, but a big part of yoga is the breath.
That would explain why the instructor kept saying to breathe twice – in through your nose … out through your mouth. 😀
I’m not very good at yoga, but I try some pilates now and then, definitely works more than you’d think. We did try out a new steakhouse on Friday, which had a very delicious steak and lobster deal. 🙂

Yay! I do like seeing when others partake in yoga. Yoga has been a part of my life for many, many years. I have private Ashtanga Yoga classes twice a week and praticse the rest of the week on my own.
That sounds interesting Jennifer – Ashtanga Yoga? I will have to look that up.
Yoga is so much more intense that I guessed it would be. You have to try the Bikram yoga. That is the one where they heat the room up to something iike 85 degrees. You will be amazed at what a “cleansing” experience it is. I left there feeling like a limp dish rag but also like I had done something really good for myself. Glad you tried yoga and liked it. I really should start going again!

Yoga is amazing – glad you tried it. I’ve taken several classes, but I evidently don’t have the personality for it. In fact, the last class I was in (with friends!) it was kindly suggested that perhaps Zumba or Jazzercize might be a better fit for me…because I can not help but giggle when I’m trying to get into the various poses! But what a great workout – worth the initial soreness. (And yep, love the Zumba!)
The first Pilates class I took all I did was giggle…. it did not help that the distract manager of the company I used to work for was in the class with me and next to me… when he went into a warrior pose all I could think of was how nervous he used to make us all when he cane in for store inspections… now he was in front of me in short shorts and bending like he was super man about to take flight…. yup… giggled and giggled 😳

Too funny! I tried Yoga on yesterday also. It was really great and I will return 2-3 times per week. I am starting my ’10-Week Health Transformation’ on tomorrow. Yoga was my kick-start.

I had a writing weekend last weekend and it was very nice… I am making progress but not as much as I had hoped I would over the winter months.

I have a yoga DVD that I do occasionally, but it just makes me feel like a tortured pretzel. 🙂 I much prefer T’ai Chi for stretching….it makes me feel sooooo relaxed.

Good on you for trying something new! I tried yoga for about 6 mo at my local gym when I was first getting back into an exercise routine. I liked it but I decided I needed something more fast paced. Although I do think it’s the perfect relaxing Sunday workout!
I enjoyed it 🙂 I do some faster workouts too, but this one was a nice change of pace.
Yoga is something I’ve wanted to try for ages. I can’t do a lot of high intensity stuff like Cardo, because it drops my sugar like a bullet, but I’ve thought Yoga might be a good fit for me…. LOL I know I will probably be sore and wondering what possessed me after the first class but you never know til you try.
I thought it was interesting I was sore from stretching Deb but as the day went on it went away… 🙂
Yaaaay for trying a yoga class, very happy to hear that. Definitely go for a power yoga class this way it will be continuous movement, you won’t fall asleep or anything, lol

I tried zumba last week, and it was so much fun! Lots of crazy dance moves that I couldn’t really keep up with, but it gets your heart pumping which is always fun 🙂
Its a blast – you dont even need to know the moves – you are moving and laughing.. that’s all good stuff 😀
